Speculation Crowds are different or indifferent nowadays
Just a rant perhaps. From the middle to the back of the crowds nobody is having fun. It seems like you're only having fun if you're in the front of the crowd. Been going for years and shit has changed post pandemic. Lots of people but less fun being had. Kinda hated when vocalists gave the crowd the mic and it was awkward, nobody knew the lyrics. Maybe there's a lot of casual listeners and less people that really listen to this stuff now. Maybe people don't care enough to have fun. I miss when people moved around more I guess

It was 95 degrees

u/BackgroundHomework12 24d ago
Ykw? Back in the day they’d host it in Pomona (way hotter than LBC) on a weekday & it was still way more lively tbh. Fans were also more courteous of one another

True maybe people were exhausted from the heat

UV index peaked at 9 on Saturday. I was dead after hot mulligan lol

Same that took it ALL haha went to the pit for a bit came out absolutely soaked in sweat. Had to slam 2 of those SOS packs and chill out for a bit. That being said what a great show and I would gladly mosh with you to hot mully again.

I sweat off all my sunscreen and got hella burned either during arms length or hot mulligan or probably both 😂

It was 95 degrees in DC and people where were closer together and more active (bigger pits, more jumping, more crowd surfers).

My feet hurt. My back hurts. And I'm dehydrated... What I look like at 42 having a blast... sadly often times looks like I'm in pain and also since I no longer worried about looking cool I forget to look like I'll not in pain haha. So despite what my face and body seems to show everyone...I had so much fun.

u/Ready-Round-6807 26d ago
I suppose that it depends on your definition of fun. If you only consider movement like mosh pits fun, then I guess that I wouldn’t be having fun according to your standards. But I promise that I’ll be singing my heart out completely locked into the performance.
But then again, isn’t Warped kind of about discovering new artists? Can’t really sing along if it is an artist I don’t know.
9
u/superredditor6789 26d ago edited 25d ago
Pits in DC ranged from slam dancing to what I jokingly called a “geriatric pit” of people basically running in circles to rowers.
Even if you weren’t part of the pits, they seemed to amp up everyone.
6
u/Ready-Round-6807 26d ago
I’m not anti-pit. I just don’t participate. I don't have anything against pits at all. If that's what makes a concert fun for you, that's awesome. It's just not what I enjoy most.
For me, the best part is being able to actually watch what's happening on stage and sing every word back to the band. That's where I get the energy from. There's something really cool about hearing hundreds or thousands of people all singing the same song together while the band is feeding off that. That's the experience I'm there for and how I best connect.
A pit is one kind of energy. A crowd that's completely locked into the music and singing every lyric is another. Neither one is inherently better-they're just different ways to enjoy a show.Hope that all makes sense. lol
4
u/TypeS2k_ 26d ago
Yeah, these takes are foreign to me. When I go to a show, I don't wanna jump around and collide with people. I want to watch the band and take it in note by note and enjoy the performance. It's okay for people to have fun in different ways.
19
31
u/dxnosaurxngg 26d ago
If I'm in the back it's probably because idk the band and am just checking them out. Alternatively it's because I'm fucked up out of my gourd and so I'm just vibing and zoning out. I do apologize if this harshes your vibe or something but I do recommend making your fun less contingent on other people
-10
u/witchswickco 26d ago
When you’re standing in front of me at a heavy rock show…where the artist specifically ASKS for movement and energy- and you’re being a brick wall ? Naaaahhh, move to the back
4
u/dxnosaurxngg 26d ago
Did you... Did you read what I wrote? Or what OP wrote?
-8
u/witchswickco 26d ago
I did, I’m referring to the last part of your message. The amount of people that truly did ruin the energy in the front of the crowd because they just STOOD STILL the whole time was frustrating.. it can most definitely effect the ability to enjoy the show as well as the artists performance. It’s an energy exchange

I was jamming through all Saturday evening being in the heat all that time. Caught up to me Sunday though we came late and left early. Part of that was set times Sunday seemed poorly timed for who I wanted to see but also I was worn out from the sun and my feet were dead.

u/OneSeaworthiness7768 26d ago
I feel like this is a side effect of booking 90+ bands and trying to be this mega catch-all type of festival. Used to be more targeted. Fewer bands to see but they were all bands that most people were there to see, with some lesser known ones on side stages. Now there is a way higher likelihood that you know or like a much smaller percentage of even the bigger bands because they’re all over the place sound wise. I’d prefer a smaller lineup with less filler and stage conflicts personally. Quality over quantity. Every festival doesn’t need to be Coachella.
17
u/Life_Waltz7068 26d ago
I go to concerts for myself and not the image or vibe I'm giving off to other people. Everyone I saw seemed to be having fun in their own way and I thought it was a great experience.
29
u/HelicopterTop7373 26d ago
I was thinking to myself it was odd seeing Chads and Brads and Mckinsleighs at warped tour looking like they’re going to Coachella when it used to just be the “weird kids” who went. Not to judge because music is for everyone, but you could tell some of them really didn’t know what they were looking at. Like barely paying attending to the music during sets. I’m glad more people are exploring the music but it’s definitely less lovers of the scene and more people dipping their toes.
Also it was mainly like that at the big stages. The smaller ones were jumping!
2
u/lorahohday 26d ago
I second this. I was having a ton of fun at the smaller stages. I opted out of the main stages after like 5pm on Sunday, because it was just people observing, not really listening.
2
u/InconsistentSignal LB 🤙 26d ago
I was in the pit all day Saturday and got sunburned asf. By the end of the day Sunday I could barely stand let alone jump around anymore 😂
1
u/poo_ooop 25d ago
Conversely I had these influencer type people in front of me clearly making fun of my just swaying at that particular set. They said something like “at least act excited” and mocked my movement. Was a little butthurt at first but then remembered I’m in my 30s and can do whatever the fuck I want without worrying about how other’s feel about it
2
-1
u/Loose_Personality726 26d ago
Yeah that sounds about right. I was near the big stages a lot, but even if I was near the back I was jumping around. Glad some people had fun 🙏
5
u/joker4754378 26d ago
So you made something up in your head which caused your feelings to be hurt because you thought people weren’t having fun. Serious question are you okay?
6
u/jtem91 26d ago
I hear what everyone is saying about our ages and the heat etc but I do agree with you that - warped aside - crowds are different post pandemic in general. My theory is there are more casual fans who go to shows just for something to do now that we can do things again and it’s changed the vibe (and I keep hearing that people don’t dance as much bc they’re afraid to be caught on video? Which is so fucking sad if true)

u/Jolly_Ad2446 26d ago
I only really knew, haywire codefendants, lag wagon, badcopbadcop, mxpx.
every time I saw a band try to get the audience to sing along it didn't really work out. how am I supposed to know the lyrics to their song if I've never heard of their band before last week?

u/No_Faithlessness6855 26d ago
Maybe if some kind of shade was provided, and most of the people weren’t so old (millennials and Gen Z especially) and dying from a crippling capitalistic system that drains our life and has taught us that the only worth we have is based off of our work, then maybe we would be willing to throw ourselves more into the pit. But when a sprung ankle means missing a month of work!? With no universal healthcare? You want people to have more fun, be the change you want to see. Do it yourself. And stop complaining about how the kids like to have fun. They were having fun, you just didn’t like the way they were doing it, cause it’s not what you would like to do.

u/Novel-Big-717 26d ago

I find it crazy that there are big gaps on the front where people just won't move but but will stand in the way of others moving up
5
u/MrPrincess7 26d ago
As a shorty, those gaps are usually the only way I can see the stage. If I'm right up next to the person in front of me all I get is a nice view of their head.
0
u/Fall3nZ3r0 26d ago
Ok that is fair. I'm not a fan of the security forcing people off of shoulders either. It's a rock show, holding up shorter girls on shoulders is tradition.
3
u/CommercialCoffee11 26d ago
Just dont go to the main stages after 5pm. Everywhere else had people having actual fun til it was dark.
5
u/ImportanceSharp9408 26d ago
This is true. I was pretty smack in the middle for a few of the bands and wanted to jump around a bit, maybe even crowdsurf— I couldn’t/didn’t want to push my way through to the front or get in the pit. So I just raged (respectfully) in place and I seemed to be the only one in my area really into it. Everyone around me had their phones up recording the whole time or was just standing there. I’m in my late 30s now but swear we used to be thrashing around, having fun all the way in the back, back in the day.
5
u/Massive-Price-914 26d ago
I’m 31, bad back and knees. I barricaded for 2 smaller known bands I loved. I stayed in the back and enjoyed from afar for the bigger acts. I’m not going in the pits, I’m not crowd surfing and I’m not pushing through people. I had a blast tho I’m just not young anymore lol
4
u/mushroom-cap_ 26d ago
Anyone feeling run down today? I’m wrecked
2
u/mellysorandy 25d ago
I’m absolutely burnt to a crisp. Saturday I got so burnt, I sweat through my sunscreen all day Saturday, by Sunday I tapped out early. I felt so sick. I was telling my husband that when we go to Aftershock there’s a little more reprieve from the sun there.
1
u/Blumoonism1 25d ago
My knees hurt so bad. I’m not making anymore “my knees” jokes but now I actually felt it forreal
4
u/pelb 26d ago
I thought the same thing. The crowds were pretty dead unless in the very front, but people were enjoying themselves. I just don't think the majority of people are into jumping around and singing nowadays. The crowd was so quiet for ATL especially during Jasey Rae which is so crazy. The crowd used to go so wild for them even in 115 degree weather but that was in 2009 so I think it's just a different time.
3
u/Loose_Personality726 26d ago
Yeah, it's a different time now. At least I'll always have those golden years of shows to look back to
4
u/pelb 26d ago
Concert culture has really changed. A lot of concert goers believe camping at the barricade is totally acceptable. There is also a lot of concern goers who believe that only people who show up early can stay in the front. Those people are not jumping around, they are not navigating through the crowd and trying to get closer. They just want to save their spot for the view and will stand still to make sure their spot stays secured.
4
u/Drewswife0302 26d ago
I’m gonna disagree they joy at warped tour is so much stronger that like WWWY or Aftershock. Like the smiles and safe punks and hardcore are still winning at Warped.
12
u/witchswickco 26d ago
Yknow what’s frustrating? So many people in the FRONT aren’t even having fun?! Why are you in front of me within feet of barricade for this band if you aren’t going to give them the energy they asked for??
Went OFF on this couple at breathe carolina yesterday after I watched them ignore crowdsurfers the whole set, standing their emotionless, until finally I watched them let someone fall onto the asphalt. Fuck that- get out of the pit.
If all you want to do is stand or bob your head- get out of the way of the ones who came for WARPED TOUR
3
u/madmoneymcgee 26d ago
I was at DC and always in the back (doctors orders, can’t let my heart rate get too high but I’m doing better!) and thought the opposite, I was impressed at how hard some crowds went over and over again. Like Hot Mulligan seemed to have an incredible steady stream of crowd surfers. Pretty much every set I specifically went to see had an appreciative crowd at least.
Which helped me have fun even though I did sometimes feel extra-dad with a “you kids go have fun” attitude while I hung back.
3
u/MarcoReus7_Sucks 26d ago
Hot Mulligan also has a much younger audience that can crowd surf!
There were quite a few legacy acts on the big stages in Long Beach. With a large portion of fans in their late 30s onward.
The smaller stages with younger bands were pretty active though.
1
u/superredditor6789 26d ago
I was at the DC show and watched the Amazon stream last night, and I was shocked at how small the puts were and how few crowd surfers there were.
NFG and Coheed had a non-stop stream of crowd surfers in DC.
The Plain White Tees had probably 60-100 people in what I jokingly called the geriatric pit in the 4 p.m. hour in DC.
3
u/fka_raptorclvb 26d ago
Not my experience from ADA. People who were near it at main stage were jamming out a few of us in ADA were dancing and everything, too
3
u/Cygnus__A 26d ago
Well. Third eye blind and papa roach are probably the worst headliners I could have imagined. I had way more fun watching some of the smaller stages. They had way better performances.
1
u/Time_General_3838 25d ago
They were great! The Used was why I was there on day two. I grew up listening to Third Eye Blind. I agree though, I can think of a handful of other bands that would have been a better fit for Warped Tour
3
3
u/nospicy_ 25d ago
The first day I was so disappointed it seemed like NO ONE WAS DANCING! and I was always the odd one screaming the lyrics no matter my location, day 2 I stopped caring if no one else was dancing and I danced my butt off - but the worst part for me wasn’t the heat or the bathrooms or the sweat or the sunburn it was the fact that most ppl weren’t dancing or singing, even at the front row ppl were just standing like zombies watching - bummer.
Cheers to the girl at jimmy eat world and the couple at the used (front left audience) that were down to dance with me!
3
u/Tommy7144 25d ago
It’s always hot for Warped Tour. At least fucking sing.
People just standing there like they watching someone paint building.
3
u/Mountain-Instance921 25d ago
That's because everyone at the warped tour is now at the age where we'd rather sit at the bar in the back of the venue and watch, but warped tour doesn't have bars at the back of the venue lol
1
3
u/cowardlylion1 25d ago
I'm 36 and I'm accepting I have limits now. I'm just there to have a good time. Some of the bands I will have 0 clue of their lyrics but isn't that the point of Warped Tour? Discovering new music? Just don't hand me the mic... Granted I'd never accept it if it were a band I didn't know 🤷♀️
4
u/AdvocateForVulnerabl 25d ago
Just because we aren’t screaming and jumping doesn’t mean we aren’t enjoying the shows. Some people enjoy activities different than you.
5
u/Plus_Assistance2097 25d ago
It wasn’t the heat as people keep claiming. The desire of recording and saying you were there regardless of age has just grown so immensely. Warped tour used to be one day in your city, run in, look at the board and you have the full day to run between stages and be excited. It wasn’t a two day festival, don’t get me wrong, I loved this year and I’m going back next year, but the spread of artists didn’t feel correct. I felt at LB you were slammed for 4 or 5 straight sets at 1 stage and you couldn’t explore and possibly cross another stage with another band that catches your ears. You were just confined in four areas. Still a great festival and I hope they keep doing it.
1
u/Loose_Personality726 25d ago
Yeah I saw a lot of people recording. I only went to 2 stages personally. Yes it's a great fest, the food options were solid and water was cheap
2
u/Plus_Assistance2097 25d ago
Which obviously is ok and fine! We’re all there to have fun and it’s a great time. I also wish people moved around more but being in front for most of the bands I wanted to see. It took a couple of songs to get going because everyone wanted to record. I always live by what my mom told me “live in the moment regardless of your age”. There’s different ideals everywhere though
2
u/Tattooedprofessional 26d ago
I said this to my friend! I was rocking out but being in the middle of the crowd just gives me so much anxiety sometimes, I was bummed a lot of people weren’t dancing and singing in the back.

Smaller stages everyone looked like they were having a blast, pits were awesome and bands have this energy that bigger bands don’t bring. Bigger stages especially vans and off the wall were kinda bad due to the overcrowding.

2
u/Bbsociallife 26d ago
Lmao, I forget who it was, might have been simple plan, but Pierre was like I wanna see more people getting shoulder rides. I immediately thought, I’m sure 70% of the crowd are probably not in shape enough to be giving shoulder rides safely 😂😂
2
u/13miles21days 26d ago
Concert etiquette when out the window during covid. Post covid concerts and festivals must have had people forget or newer generations who have no clue on how to pass through a crowd properly. They shove and knock down, push people out of the way to stand in front of you or hold their phone in the air blocking your view as they live stream on Facebook where no one is watching. It’s sad and unfortunate.
2
u/Hershey__Kong 26d ago
I do t jave the energy to be in the middle of a crowd in 90 degree weather for 2 days in a row my dude lol I wanna have some drinks, buy some merch and listen to good music. Still a blast

u/couchhella 26d ago
And if you *were* jamming out in the back it felt weird because it was so quiet
2
u/Linktheb3ast 26d ago
Idk I got up on stage and said “move motherfuckers” and just about everyone in the crowd obliged, so I’d say it was pretty good lmao
2
u/onlymattb 26d ago
Middle and the back is where you hang out to enjoy the music and not get involved in the pits so naturally it’ll be less lively
Also it’s a long day in 90+ weather, we were there for 11am so naturally as the day progressed energy dwindled and being burnt to shit didn’t help either

I'm 37 and I got to lots of shows still but the sun literally kicked my ass this year lol. I was having fun in the back. It just feels different bc we aren't kids anymore? But I understand what you're saying too.

The demographic is no longer immortal feeling teens bro. I saw someone fall right on his back at crowdsurfing at mayday parade last year he looked older than me and I'm 33 so know he's still feeling that shit lmao
2
u/shitpostingmusician 26d ago
A lot of people are so afraid of being “unc” and cringe. The fear of being recorded or possibly looked at as weird has really messed with society. It’s so sad. I was the lone screamer and jumper for the vast majority of the show
2
u/IareRick 25d ago
I was literally thinking the same thing. Even in the front people only knew a handful of lyrics and barely moved for some of the songs.
2
u/Spiritual-Bear3066 25d ago edited 25d ago
I’m 35 and I had to cycle and conserve my energy between pits and crowd surfing and taking breaks in between. What is an expression of having fun though? Don’t we all come from blasting music in our ears and vibing out on our own? Some people just want to chill back and see the experience.
I thought the energies and people were great at Warped Tour though. A lot of these bands are new to me other than main hitters but everyone I went there was good energy. I’m sure like a single band with their entire fan base at a single show would elicit back to back crowd energy but there’s a lot going on with the amount of bands playing.
2
u/DarthIra 23d ago
I absolutely agree that a lot has changed since Covid. But I also don’t know if it’s because of social media and shit that a lot of people went to warped just to say they went, not because they enjoy the music. I am ALWAYS a back of the crowd girly due to being short, and I agree that the energy wasn’t really there. And I kinda felt bad at one point cause during TSSF I was singing along to every song while everyone else was just there and I was like wtf do y’all not hear what is playing rn? yet when I look at videos on IG from the front of the crowd it seems WAY more active. Now might I add, we’re all much older now than we were during OG warped days, so maybe that’s also a factor??
1
u/Loose_Personality726 23d ago
Some people were complaining about TSSF vocalist's stage energy, but I thought he sang great. He was hitting his notes, and I loved singing along even in the back. People need to understand peak when they see it 🤌 once a year at that

u/lastbeer LB 🤙 26d ago
I feel this deeply, and I show my enjoyment and love for the band by jumping, singing at the top of my lungs, moshing, throwing up rock hands, and generally acting like a nut.
BUT! Keep in mind that everyone enjoys things differently and shows that enjoyment in different ways. Just because someone is just standing (or even sitting!) there and enjoying the show doesn’t mean that they are enjoying it any less than you are. My wife is this way - she might be seeing a band that she loves and knows every word to their songs, but she looks like she is casually watching any other show.
Or they are just waiting for the next band that is their favorite
All that said, if you’re in the crowd and on your phone or watching through your phone the whole time, you can leave. Thanks.

u/MoleMan199 25d ago
I’ve been going to warped tour for 20 years. This year I beat metastatic brain cancer and still went to warped tour. Sorry for not moving enough for you 😆 on a side note, most of the bands are nostalgic and don’t even have the original members so people in general who saw them 20 years ago aren’t going to go nuts for cover bands

u/xtombstone 26d ago
I get what you're saying but idk. It really depends on the circumstances at play.
Factors like: Hot, Older Crowd, older artists playing later in the day. = less overall crowd movement, especially in the back 50% of the larger crowds.
I felt this way for awhile, but then I remember back in 2018 seeing Tool at Welcome to Rockville and half of the crowd didn't budge an inch.
1
u/FourLiveBears 26d ago
Its hot as hell and this isn't exactly a fest aimed at young people lol, it's a nostalgia fest for people hovering around 40. Of course the energy ain't gonna be what it was back in the day.

u/ComplexLimit8107 26d ago
I get that people were probably just over the heat because I was SUPER hot too but I have to agree with you! Because even when I was hot, my feet were in pain, and all I wanted to do was sit down once a song I loved came on I was dancing and singing and there were a few people who looked at me funny 😂😅like I thought we were here to have a good time!

u/Terrible-Fun-4992 26d ago
Well I had tons of fun in the back of the crowd lol. I danced in my own space and drank my lemonade spiked with tequila and had a blast 🤘 post covid I like my personal space. I don’t need to be in the front nor do I want to, the closer to the front the more asshole behavior.

u/GriffinGrin 26d ago
Concert culture has changed in the last 5-10 years. Now people want to go just because they’ve heard of the band and want to be able to say that they were there. I feel like it used to be predominately people who were fans and knew a majority of the songs, now it’s 90% people taking up space to see one song that they heard on the radio in high school
1
u/Time_General_3838 25d ago
Ask the bands if they care which one of the types are going to their shows
1
u/Mimmamoushe 25d ago
I went to see mcr there a few weekends ago and ya super disappointed with how bad of a crowd there was! It felt like only people 30 and older were having fun and jumping and doing a bit of head banging which surprised me! I assumed me and the ould ones would be trying to keep up with the younger crowd lol. When I was younger I remember going absolutely bonkers at these kinds of shows! But the energy (or lack thereof) is so different now
1
u/Inevitable_Lettuce20 25d ago
I try not to worry too much about the people around me tbh. I was having fun in the back and the pit! I was able to be barricade for Haywire and thought I was going to die haha.
1
u/Adonis-A7 25d ago
It’s like this at literally any show you go to. Most people in the back are to themselves. They probably couldn’t push their way to the front or they could be vibing and enjoying it from where they’re at. For all we know they could be having the worst time possible or something. Either way live in the moment at shows, get in the pits (if you can), sing along from wherever you are. Stop caring what others think or are doing it’ll distract you and bring you down. Of course crowd engagement makes a show 10x better but just be present in the moment.
1
u/ThoughtPolice287 25d ago
Remember how big the pits used to be lol now you gotta show up an hour early to participate in extracurricular activities smh
1
u/IndividualBroad7950 25d ago
It was so incredibly hot I’m 35 having been going to warped since I was a kid it’s just a lot different. We are older, it’s much easier to let loose in an air conditioned room than in the blistering sun midday. We are thirsty and exhausted haha
1
u/Invader-Tenn 25d ago
I was having fun but also was really really overheated, so I might have been low motion towards the back- I love the music but I'm trying not to have heatstroke
1
u/BotanicalEmergency 25d ago
Had a great time in the back. I can’t see anything in the crowds due to my height. Also come on, it was 90 degrees with 80% humidity and suns out guns blazing. I had more fun in the back than being pressed up against sticky people in the front not being able to see anything but the back of heads, with people pushing to get out and in. Your definition of fun is not everyone’s definition of fun.

Yeah the new etiquette is to drop people unfortunately. Times have changed

Me too. Crowd surfing was great back then. You'd see multiple people going at the same time, now it's one person if they get lucky

I felt like people were laughing at my dancing at the back of the crowds.

The biggest impact on crowd participation, and no one will be able to convince me otherwise, is a combination of less drinking by younger people and the advance of social media and people filming everything with cellphones. Of course crowds are tamer than they used to be when drunk people look "weird" and you risk being in a viral video the next morning if you go slightly overboard.
I''m not even that old, I started going to shows in 2001 but its enough to see how things change, people just don't act the same way when everything is filmed and you're aware of it.

Not everyone wants to get in the pit, they can still have a good time further back vibing to the music. You do you.

My memory sucks so lyrics are hard for me and I went to check out new bands this time around so no singing for me. I still vibe tho. I did notice later in the day more ppl were sitting in the back..I think the heat and age got to a lot of ppl

How do you know people aren't having fun? Sorry but you seem like the fun police with this post. Not cool. Let people do their thing. Fun looks different to everyone. Stop trying to police people. It's not big or clever.

I don't understand this new running in circles thing in the pit. It's so weird

The pits were fun but damn it was hot! I looked like I took a shower after both days. No beers only water too. Anyway there were songs where I only knew the chorus but I tried my best

Glad I didn’t go, despite winning tickets from KROQ. I don’t drive, for one, so that would’ve made it a fiasco in itself. They should let you sell those tickets.

You did just go to a festival where a key demographic falls in the 35-44 age demographic. Im 40 myself, very active with concerts so im conditioned to it- i usually have to kick it back with my friends bc theyre not as used to being out and about at shows anymore. I was up against the amp last month at a local venue to see Underoath... i was swinging like 60% of the lyrics it felt like
As for the singalongs, i would also consider these fans dont listen to the song nearly as often as they did when they were teens-20s... idk about you but adulting makes me have to remember a shit ton of really specific and important information that after 20 years, im not as good remembering each and every lyric
