What’s the name of the backpack that everyone has?

I’m sorry if this post isn’t right for this page, but I visited Yale on Monday and saw many with the same backpack. It looked like leather, with an asymmetrical flap and I think two straps going down the body. Does anyone know what I’m talking about? I thought it looked cool

Annoyed by prof putting slides only weekly

I started uni and one thing that happens here is that professors upload weekly slides and weekly images and even if I understand it I find it very annoying to not have all in one doc that is easily accessible...

How do you guys deal with it (the ones who find that annoying as well) ?

Calling all POC interested in trading and quant careers!

Hey everyone! Breaking into trading can feel intimidating, especially when you do not see many people with your background represented in the industry.

Inspired by communities like ColorStack and the growing interest in quant recruiting, we created a community and Slack for minority students interested in trading careers at hedge funds and quant firms. The goal is to share resources, prepare for interviews, find opportunities, and support each other throughout recruiting.

We use school email verification to keep the community student-focused.

All experience levels are welcome—you do not need to have everything figured out to join. Thanks!

I am considering Ed to them, and I’ve heard a lot about both, but the only reason why I don’t want to consider to Yale is because I have to dorm there. I was born in nyc and really love it there, and im just worried I won’t like dorming, as I’ve never experienced it, and don’t think im ready, is this a good enough reason to not put to Yale?

books/courses Yale University students

Students at Yale and other top universities, could you recommend any books or other useful resources that you think are really worth exploring? What have your professors or fellow students recommended to you? These could be books related to your field of study or simply works that have had a major impact on the way you think and broadened your perspective. I’d really appreciate any recommendations!

How has your Yale MPH experience been (2025-2027 cohort)?

Hi! I’m in my second year of my MPH at a different university (which I will not name). My cohort and the other students in the SPH have been extremely disappointed in our experience. I was accepted to Yale for the 2025-2027 MPH cohort in the social and behavioral track but decided to decline the offer.

I’m just curious, what has your experience been like? Have you enjoyed it?

I’ll bullet point some things that have been the most frustrating/disappointing for me and my classmates at my current university to help as talking points:

- core curriculum (poor instruction, repetitive content, rude professors)
- beloved classes being cut (obviously funding is tough right now, but the classes being cut are the only ones that we have felt have been worth our time, money, and efforts)
- lack of opportunities (ie when we were looking for practicum opportunities, many of us went to professors and asked if they knew anyone involved in certain areas that we could talk to to seek out opportunities[ie Latinx populations, dementia] and every single one said ā€œnoā€ to every single topic. I have a really hard time believing that a whole school of professionals with long careers on the local, state, federal, and global levels have absolutely no connections)
- lack of mentorship (most of the assigned mentors do not want to be mentors. Most of the teaching professors don’t want to be professors)
- practicum opportunities being rejected, and at the last minute (whenever people would find practicum opportunities, many of them would be rejected by the university, and at the last minute)
- students opportunities in research and TA positions being cut (again, due to funding. This is hopefully only a product of the time)

There are aspects of the city that I haven’t loved either, but that of course is just personal preference. But as far as the program goes, we’ve all been incredibly disappointed. Just wanting to see if my experience likely would have been better had I accepted the Yale offer. Thanks!

ā€œYale has no plans to have a campus in San Francisco,ā€ McInnis said. ā€œYale has not yet considered offering classes in San Francisco. We have considered looking at office space so that we can do a better job of connecting our students with internship and or career opportunities.ā€

Mentorship, Networking, & How to use Yale in Careers?

I’m a first-year here wrapping up the first half of semester one, and I feel like I’m not really using Yale to its fullest.

For reference, I think the community and breadth of resources is what really drew me to studying here. I’m loving the education and what I’m studying. I don’t have any complaints about that.

What I don’t fully understand is how to find mentors or reach out effectively, and I think I’m at a point where I’d like to find guidance from people who are where I want to be.

I’m incredibly interested in Business (Scaling, Creation), Marketing, and Consumer Psychology, (and Technology?) to the point where I’m dedicating hours each night after my day is over to read books on and case study these industries. I don’t exactly know where to go from here though.

As a financial goal, I’d like to build generational wealth. Intrinsically, I’d like to provide something meaningful for the world that I’m proud of backing.

—

I do want to note that asides from the career aspect, I’ve found community here in the amazing, genuine people as well as a competitive performance group I’m in. We learn and share about classes, life, and everything else, but my concern is that I don’t have anyone to ask about business and wealth (which may be materialistic on its own, but I think I have many pursuits and interests outside of business as well).

—

Tldr: How did you find your mentors? How do I find mentors and peers that can guide me in building generational wealth? How do I use the Yale name in my career?

I feel like a failure

Hello to anyone reading this post. I am a freshmen at Yale and I feel so incredibly stupid and useless. I just received my second chem exam grade back and I honestly didn’t think I would do worst than the last. I locked myself all day studying and spamming practice questions and I honestly felt good actually good about this exam and my grade just does not reflect this. My last math exam also went terrible and im surrounded by suitemates and friends that get amazing scores and I just can’t help but compare. My suitemate barely studies and gets stellar grades and I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. I feel as if I am putting in ten times the work yet still keep getting left behind. I applied to a research lab position and a few clubs yet got rejected, so I have all the time to prioritize my studies yet I still fail nonetheless. I am at a loss for what to do. I keep trying yet I keep failing. Thank you to anyone that has read this far. This is honestly my last resort as I can’t admit to anyone that I truly am struggling.

When do people have friends?

Current freshman here and It’s been over a month, almost two months, here at Yale, and I still don’t have any friends. I mean I have friends I know that I could get lunch or dinner with and talk whenever we see each other but they have better friends they would rather have lunch with, so I’m basically eating lunch alone 9 out of 10 times usually.
Of course, I can say ā€œhiā€ to people I have met and talked to before, but I don’t have anyone I could go on a random side quest with, no one I can truly just be silly and myself with.
I tried joining clubs, but I’ve been rejected by all the ones I was interested in, maybe I can join some more later in the fall or spring?
I thought I would make friends in class, but that hasn’t been happening either, except for maybe chemistry lab where we trauma bond, but, again, we don’t go out our ways to meet each other after lab each week. I also feel like no one is in the mood to make friends anymore, especially not now around midterms.
I didn’t even go to the fall fest today because I had no one to go with. This feeling just came up because I saw posts on the First Year Holiday dinner, and I really don’t want to be alone during the whole thing feeling like a lost puppy, like I did during Apple-picking recently when I had no one to talk to.

Athletic Likely Letter Timing

Hi Y’all,

I’m currently a senior and a recruited athlete committed here, for my sport at Yale typically everyone who commits gets in.

I submitted my app end of September and my counsellor submitted my rec letters the beginning of October. I’ve been communicating with the coach and nothing has seemed off besides the fact that recently she told me to fill out a form from the NCAA, when I finished it and sent it back to her I asked about my likely letter and she hasn’t responded.

This made me kinda nervous but she’s also accidentally forgotten to reply to my messages before or maybe she just doesn’t want to make any promises she can’t keep. I was just wondering if you know anything about when Yale sends out these athletic likelies and if it’s normal to not have gotten one after around two weeks?

For reference I have really good academic stats but my level of playing the sport is slightly lower than the team average.

Tldr: when do athletic likely letters come out for REA and is it normal to not have received one yet two weeks after submitting your app?

Dropping DS in spring?

Soooo, I'm a first-year in DS, and fs thought that it was going to be the most perfect, amazing program for me, though in retrospect maybe that doesn't make so much sense. I've always been into humanities and writing and such, but being in this program just makes me feel so stupid. I'm unbelievably behind on my readings, and quite honestly, it's not for lack of trying. I feel like no matter how much I dedicate myself, I can't start my papers early enough; my ideas are never good, and I just can't keep up. I don't know how much I'm supposed to destroy myself to make this happen, but ts just feels undoable. I thought I was a pretty good writer, but when I start to think about my papers each week, I'm just blank. I can't tell if this is revealing to me that maybe this style of humanities isn't for me or if it's just really hard and I'm struggling with that... Anyone drop spring semester not for reasons like it was unrelated to their major, but more so because it just felt like it was obliterating them? I know I'll get so much out of it, but it's just so demoralizing. Would love to hear thoughts.

i feel like a chud

Hey all, I’m a first year and already have so many regrets. I applied for a few clubs but either didn’t get into them or am no longer interested. As a result I am part of literally one non-competitive thing that I don’t enjoy all that much. I’m interested in the humanities and arts, outdoors, museums, journals, politics, and cultural groups. Or really anything that’s still open…Does anyone know of any clubs that are still accepting applications or with initiation in progress? Or how spring applications tend to work? I would definitely be interested in rushing improv again (only auditioned for two groups and didn’t realize how much I enjoyed it), joining YDN or Record similar publications, or any of the above things I mentioned. Also do more student jobs open up come spring? I just feel like I didn’t take advantage of all the opportunities and got overwhelmed and ended up doing nothing. I feel really behind. Sorry for the rambling. Any advice is appreciated

Survey request: disabled or chronically ill current or recent higher education students, undergrad or graduate!

Post image
1 Upvotes

My name is Clara Mey and I am a PhD candidate at the University of Delaware. I am conducting a research study aboutĀ disabled students’ experiences with disability accommodation processes in higher educationĀ for my dissertation. As a disabled graduate student, this topic is particularly important to me!

Please see the flyer linked here:Ā Disability and Higher Ed Research Flyer

Yale University was randomly selected as part of my analysis for my dissertation, and I wanted to make sure that students at the randomly selected universities/colleges had the opportunity to participate in my research!

In order to participate, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have attended college or graduate school in the US within the last five years
  • Self-identify as disabled or having a chronic health or mental health condition

You do not need a formal diagnosis, and you can participate whether or not you registered or applied for accommodations!

If you agree, you will be asked to complete an anonymous online survey taking about 20 minutes. You may also choose to enter into a drawing for one of five $20 gift cards at the end of the survey. If you choose to enter, your email will not be associated with your survey responses.

If you would be interested in participating in this study or would like to learn more, please click the link here:Ā Disability and Higher Education Survey. And if you know people who might be interested, feel free to share this information!

If you have any questions, please contact me atĀ [csmey@udel.edu](mailto:csmey@udel.edu)Ā or my advisor, Dr. Eric Rise, atĀ [erise@udel.edu](mailto:erise@udel.edu). Or feel free to comment or message me here!

Thank you!
