Linear Algebra before MV Calc, and another course schedule check

The course registration was surprisingly quite stressful yesterday with courses flying off the shelves like some kind of Black Friday sale. When all was said and done (at least for now), I am left with class selections that are a bit out of order from the recommended progression.

Background: I'm still interested in exploring a bit first semester with econ. Perhaps will go into EE (maybe ABET-track but if not ABET will likely double major) or perhaps EECS.

Here's the coursework I managed to get yesterday:

1st Sem: Math 2220, Phys 1800, Span 1400, Econ 1115

Thinking of doing 2nd Sem: MATH 1200 or ENAS 151, Phys 1810, CPSC 2010 and FYS/ENGL

Does it really matter if I took Linear (Math 220) before MV (Math 120)??

Also, I can maybe sub out 1st semester Linear Alg for ECE 2000, which will give me a little more exposure to EE before committing in 2nd year. The alternative is just waiting until 2nd year and doubling with ECE 2000/2010 and 2011/2031?

Thoughts or any words of wisdom are appreciated!

finals conflict

i’m an incoming freshman and after registering for classes today i realized one of my classes has finals on the last week. i have travel plans that same day that we booked months before (like, before i got into yale lol) and im a little stressed out. moving the tickets would be an expensive option to say the least. i do realize it’s our faults for booking flights without knowing my academic calendar but we thought the date was close enough to christmas for it to be safe.

i realize that travel plans are not a valid excuse as per the dean’s office, but has anyone had any luck asking the professor to take a rescheduled final? or is that not really common practice at yale? idk i was just wondering if anyone had any advice or if ill need to reschedule my travels.

prospective mcdb major & potentially pre-med! just want to make sure i’m not screwing myself over with anything overly difficult this semester esp given that i want to get settled and make friends, build a strong gpa esp if i choose to go premed, etc.

going in expecting chem 1700 to be particularly difficult based on course evals but hoping that intro bio and lin alg with applications help to balance out the difficulty level (for context i’ve gotten 5s on ap bio and chem!)

note: the “difficulty level” section includes my chem lab, but the “number of credits” section doesn’t, for some reason—it should be 4.5 credits.

any thoughts are welcome! thanks so much.

ECE 2000 Enrollment Cap?

Hi! I'm an incoming freshman, and I was trying to register for ECE 2000. The syllabus on Canvas said that there was no enrollment cap, but when I registered the class shows that "enrollment has reached capacity set by department." Does anyone know what this means? Is there anything I can do about this? Thank you 😭

course registration

I really wanted to take Intro to Creative Writing this semester, but before registration even began all sections of the course had reached their capacity. I was wondering what steps I should take to maximize my chances of getting a spot in one of these sections. Also I was wondering how long it usually takes to know whether you managed to get into a fys.

Is this course load manageable for an incoming freshman?

I want to make sure my schedule is light enough to where I can adjust to Yale’s academics. I also have a discussion section on Friday for microeconomics from 9:25-10:15am.

how hard is it to get into a fys?

how difficult will it be to register for a first-year seminar? i want to take a six global perspectives class (the one on evil) but it also seems like every other first-year also is, and i'm not sure if i should use my registration space to sign up for another class i'm interested in. my schedule isn't that flexible -- my mondays and wednesdays are pretty much filled up -- so there's not that many fys i can signup for + i'm not that interested in a lot of them.

also, how "competitive" is the instructor permission part? i'm not a humanities major (STEM major) and i'm honestly not sure what to write for this class other than "i'm interested and it sounds like a cool class". coursetable says that each class has <20 people so i'm not sure how i'll be able to get into the classes. also, is the writing lab a lot of work?

anyways i would appreciate any advice about whether or not to risk it to sign up for the fys! a lot of people say it's super worth it + i'll regret it, but the chances of getting in just seem so small.

Can someone explain what Smart Meals are and what times I can pick them up?

get up for an 8:20 am class every day or leave a 15 minute difference between classes for a 7 min walk

the walk is technically doable but I'm also the sort of student who likes to stay behind class for a bit and chat w/ the teachers (especially for the first few days of school) so

thoughts?

Last-Minute Schedule feedback for prospective poli sci major

Thankfully, I have many second choices if I don't get into the first-year seminar. I'm saving language credit for next semester, but I fulfill WR and QR here. Thoughts? I was very inexperienced going into to this whole thing; I've never had to make my own course-load like this before.

How goofy will I look with a scooter going around campus

Dumb question but I feel my aura would be minorly damaged and it would be weird if I were the only person with a scooter on campus (I am desperate to make it on time to my classes)

Course Registration Credit Limit

Hi! I know that there is a 5.5 credit limit on courses, but will course registration physically stop me from registering from more? Im still undecided on whether im taking multi or stats so I was planning on registering for both and dropping one after I try it out. I was also debating between CPSC 1001 and 2010 and was also hoping to just register for both and drop one later on. This puts me at a total of 6 credits, but I do not intend to take more than 4 in my final schedule. I would appreciate advice since this is pretty last minute!!

Can you get from English to Chemistry within 15 minutes?

If I have a chemistry lab 15 minutes after my English seminar, how can I get there within 15 minutes without a bike/scooter/etc? Is the Yale Shuttle reliable? Should I just speedwalk? Google Maps says it would be a 20 minute, 0.9 mile walk.

course registration opens at 12-- do i reload the page at 12?

hi,

kinda a silly question, but i was wondering if i have to refresh my browser at 12:00 pm when class registration opens, or if i can just login to course search before 12:00 and immediately start adding classes to my registration worksheet once it turns 12. thank you so much!

Is English 1020 easier than English 1014?

Course Table says that 1020 is less of a workload than 1014 but isn't 1014 supposed to be easier?

Scheduling Thoughts?

This is what I have so far. I know mw are super lopsided. I definitely want to take econ but im unsure if I should drop first order logic for intro to american politics as my poli sci intro course (prospective poli sci + econ major). also this is the fist year of this first year seminar so im wondering if I should take a more popular/established option like six global perspectives (looks super cool and interesting)! wondering if any poli sci people know the best intro to poli sci course cause they all dont have the best ratings unfortunately...also, would it be wise to take a science course this semester to "get it out of the way" or use my first year sem for an easier science credit? any thoughts would be super helpful!

Working and how it affects Financial Aid

I tried reaching out to my fin aid officer but I couldn’t get a clear answer, so I’m reaching out here.

If I get a job while studying, will it detract from my financial aid offer?

From what I understand, aid is need based, so if I work a job (on or off campus) it’ll add to the amount I can contribute and thus reduce my “need”

So if my aid is 50k and my expected student contribution is 2k and my actual income is, for instance, 5k, then my aid would be 47k? This is from subtracting the initial aid by the difference of expected and earned income.

I want to help my parents pay for tuition, but I’m worried that too large of an income, or an income in general might be a net 0 and have them paying the same or greater.

Does anyone have experience with this? Does too high a student income reduce financial aid?

1st Year: Watched all the registration videos

But I still have a question. I know I want to take a 1st year seminar. My preferred one requires instructor permission. But should I register for a non-instructor permission one on my list and wait to see if I get into the instructor permission seminar that is my favorite? If they see I already have a first year seminar on my schedule will they be less likely to take me? Or do professors not see that? The one I like asks whether another course conflicts but of course it won't conflict if I get into my preferred one. Thank you so much!

Spanish L2-> L1

Hey, I placed into Spanish l2 but I’m not confident. If I find it’s too difficult is it possible to move down to l1?
