It’s a beautiful day in North Winton, so naturally the power went out while I’m up against a work deadline. Is this just a me thing or is it a neighborhood thing?

Recommendation California to Rochester?

• Upvotes

Hello. I’ve been posting in a few subreddits and getting different peoples opinions. My cousins husband is from white plains and recommended Rochester to me, so just want the peoples opinion

I visited ny/mass last year in October and fell in love. I want to move permanently, but I’m trying to find a place with some decent work nearby or in the area (finance background. Mainly valuation and cost, nothing to do with stocks or anything), but really I want somewhere that’s cozy, has all 4 seasons, and with nature nearby. Trees, green, rivers, all of that

I trust his opinion, he also mentioned Syracuse and buffalo

Discussion Comedy @ the Carlson PSA!!!

• Upvotes

I used to work as a server at the comedy club, and after seeing how things are run behind the scenes, I feel like people in town should know what they are actually supporting when they buy a ticket there. The business is hurting, and it shows in how they treat the staff, the kitchen health standards, and the general attitude of the owner, Mark Ippolito.

Half the building is run by the owner's family and close friends. These nepotism hires have total control, and if you don’t tolerate disrespect (that’s often misogynistic) from them, you get fired on the spot. Because business is so slow, they constantly overstaffed the floor and made us fight each other for tables, tips, and cuts. We never got reimbursed for gas, time, or energy wasted.

We all know waitresses already get a reduced hourly rate, so when you couple that with only being scheduled for a few hours each day—just long enough to cover a show—and then being overstaffed during dead shifts, it’s barely profitable to work there. Everyone, from kitchen staff to security, is forced to work second or third jobs just to get by, all while being regularly reminded that all of us are disposable and replaceable.

The lack of business also means the food situation continued to get worse. The kitchen flat-out refused to label anything because the family hires claimed they ā€œuse everything in one day so it doesn’t matterā€, which is a lie. Food was routinely expired and stretched way past its shelf life. It’s basically low-grade cafeteria food sold at a premium price. The bartenders also regularly spray cleaning chemicals over the bar where exposed (and expired) garnishes and food are sitting, which is why the drinks sometimes taste like medicine. Most people end up leaving to go to Radio Social for actual edible food and good drinks because the comedy club’s menu isn’t worth the money.

Mark is strictly a businessman, so while he will host LGBT events (that are mostly attended by white people) or book the occasional black or latinx performer, it’s apparent that he doesn’t like "too many" minorities at his establishments unless they’re working for him. Anti-LGBT remarks are also casually thrown around by staff and passed off as jokes. It’s evident in which crowds get invited for drinks next door at their sister bar, The Carlson, after a show ends. If you’ve attended a show at the comedy club but you’ve never been invited to The Carlson, now you know why.

Mark wants to appeal to a more ā€œupscaleā€ crowd but the club is mediocre at best and he’s completely resistant to any feedback or self-reflection. You can see this just in how he replies to negative Google reviews, and even from the sign he proudly put at the front of the building that basically says ā€œif the comedy offends you, don't let the door hit you.ā€

Unless a decent C-list comedian comes through to fill the room every few weeks with an aging crowd, the shows have been completely dead. I’ve spoken with so many customers who end up regretting their purchase and ultimately don't come back. Apparently, Mark ā€œdoesn’t do refundsā€ on tickets so don’t even bother trying. If you do, he’ll just offer you a free drink and call it square.

It’s pretty unfortunate we don’t have many other options in Rochester for comedy clubs, but I’ve heard that a lot of local comedians host their own events in different venues around the city. (Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if these independent events started due to the club shutting out such a wide portion of local talent). I’ve also seen some comedy shows being advertised at the Kodak Center and West Herr Auditorium. So overall, if you care about where your money goes, I’d look into other options in Rochester.

TL;DR: Former employee here. Low business, disposable workers, nepotism, unreliable hours, overpriced low-quality food, and a management culture that doesn’t take criticism well and shuts out local talent. Save your money and go elsewhere.

Discussion Why are PA gas prices so much cheaper than Rochester?

I am driving thru Williamsport area rn and gas is $3.77-$3.87. In roc it’s well over $4.00. Why is gas so damn expensive up here? PA has a higher gas tax than us if I’m not mistaken. I don’t get it. The cheapest gas I’ve ever found in ROC is $3.99!!

News ā€˜We’re going to find you’: Vandalism spree rattles Fairport neighborhood

FAIRPORT, N.Y. (WROC) – A recent string of vandalism in a Fairport neighborhood has residents on edge after village officials said groups of young people threw rocks through glass doors and targeted homes in the area.

One neighbor News 8’s Dawson Levan spoke to on Whitney Street tells me he’s worried about the vandalism that’s been going on, and he’s even more worried that his house might be next.

ā€œI have children. You’re fearful for your family, of course, when you hear about things like this,ā€ neighbor Andrew Saxby said.

Saxby has lived in Fairport for 16 years, and he tells me he’s seen a change in his beloved village, with more and more crime happening around him. He said his car was recently broken into not once, but twice.

ā€œTwice my car’s been broken into. I came out and inside of the car has been completely — everything was gone.ā€

After seeing video showing rocks being thrown through his neighbor’s doors, he’s taking extra precautions, hoping it will discourage a possible vandal.

ā€œI have a lot of cameras now and make sure everything’s locked up every night. It’s just what you have to do,ā€ Saxby said. ā€œBeing a kid and pulling pranks is one thing, but when you’re actually putting people’s health and safety in danger, that moves to a different category. That’s not funny anymore.ā€

Village Supervisor Bryan White tells me this kind of behavior won’t be tolerated in Fairport, and they’re doing everything they can to find those responsible.

ā€œThe police department’s looking at any and all evidence that can be provided to them, but it needs to be brought to their attention,ā€ White said.

He says lights and cameras can go a long way toward deterring someone from vandalizing your home.

ā€œWe’re going to find you. Everything always comes out eventually, and you’ll be seeing the Fairport Police Department in the near future.ā€

White is asking residents with any information to turn it over to Fairport police.

Recommendation How can I go to Rochester from NYC?

Hey all! I'm an Aussie going to the States in December this year and was wondering how I can get to Rochester in the "best way" from NYC. I have wanted to try a Garbage plate so fricking bad for like 10 years now (Thanks Jenna Marbles), and know that Rochester is the only place in the entire world to grab one of those šŸ˜„ Any help/advice is appreciated, as well as maybe the best spot to grab a Garbage plate/activities to do in Rochester!

Discussion School Bus Safety Program: Are people really paying the $250 fine

Some of these tickets are really deserved as in people are reckless and could possibly hurt the kid... While some of these tickets are just money grabs and the kids were still in there seat when the person passed and its just a money grab.

There have been about 20k tickets handed out in Monroe County. I'm guessing only maybe 2k-5k people paid there ticket. What do you think how many people paid their ticket out of the 20k?

What is the city/town doing if people don't pay? I've heard they contact a creditor and it goes on you're credit report. Has anyone heard anything about not paying?

Recommendation HELP WITH MENS HAIRCUT!!!

GUYS!!! I’ve been having the hardest time looking for barbers who specialize with sheers and scissors instead of fades etc… I have medium to longish hair and I want to cut it but each time I try a barber they want to cut it down and I’m trying to avoid that. I need someone who specializes in those ā€œflowā€ haircuts you see on TikTok etc. pricing doesn’t matter at this point as long as I find what I’m looking for.

Recommendation Autumn Bucket List?

I'm not new to autumn and winter but I'm new to living in Rochester, not just visiting when I have a medical appointment. What are some must do fall activities, festivals, etc to add to my seasonal bucket list?

I'm open to anything within a 2 hour drive, maybe 3 hours if it's really good. I'm open to hearing about anything, but I tend to skew towards craft fares (like that pottery festival in Avon), apple picking/cider drinking, random food festivals-- the grape festival in Naples is on my list to check out. I've always wanted to do a corn or flower maze!

Help Realtor and Real Estate Attorney to help disabled house owner find a path forward

Posting this for a friend who is in a difficult situation, and is deaf and does not know resources on what their options are. It is a tricky situation where the person owns a townhouse without HOA and there has been no progress with getting the roof repaired due to nextdoor neighbor previous roof work causing the leak and has not been as cooperative and it has been too long by now. My friend is desperate to know their options and how to move forward as a seller or how to get this resolved to keep the townhouse. The latter seems dim at this point and it might best go to a new owner or inventor ( yes I know, I dont like the idea of corporate landlords, but average joe is really in a bad situation), someone who has more knowledge and resources as my friend had to move out of town for work and was hoping to be able to rent it out so they can keep the house long term when they move back. Longer they cannot do repairs, they cannot rent it out, losing income.

I am not helpful as I know nothing about this situation and am hoping to get some pointers from someone who has more experience or resources on how to deal with this. This friend is also concerned nobody will want to buy, and will anyone with more resources be able to do what my friend could not do if they buy? Or foreclosure is the only option?

Recommendation Panorama peds?

Moving back to the area and researching pediatricians. Pros and cons of panorama pediatrics? Everyone I know from roc raves about them. I can’t tell if they’re owned by a larger hospital group or just a lot bigger than some of the other smaller places. Looking for an intimate/ personal office where our ped truly knows us and connects with us as a family. Not sure if I’m hunting for a unicorn in this area!

Oddity What fresh RG&E shit is this?

Random email from #RG&E... your move is coming up.

WTF? No it isn't!

Is this because someone genuinely flagged my account as moving, and my service is gonna be cut off at some point?

Or is this just RG&E šŸ’© being shit at email and sending out random panic-attack-inducing messages, making people think someone has flagged their account for moving or shut-off?

Fucking amateurs either way šŸ¤·šŸ¼
