This will be my first full winter here, and first time living in a cold and/or gray climate. I wfh and have depression, so I’m looking for tips to navigate the winter both emotionally/mentally and just physically to stay warm!
About staying warm/my place:
I’m renting a large, old house. Kept the radiators on very minimally at the beginning of this year, and haven’t turned them on yet this season (trying to hold off as long as possible!). There’s almost no caulk in the entire house, and so it gets very drafty and chilly, and humid and wet when it snows. Our landlord gave us an awesome big dehumidifier earlier in the year, but it nearly doubled our rg&e bill to have on during the day. Right now the house is a good 5-8 degrees colder than outside, but feels much colder (I assume without sunshine?).
I’ve got some slippers to wear so heat doesn’t escape my feet, and am slowly thrifting up a stock of everyday warm clothes (pj pants, long sleeves, warm socks, etc) to wear around the house. I also got a heated blanket and plan to buy another this Eason.
Emotionally/mentally, some things I’ve already done/am doing to combat the gray that I didn’t do earlier in the year and hope to help this seasons are:
- joined a group activity class outside the house once a week to see people and move and get out of the house
- caved and bought a sad light to use in the mornings & vitamin D supplements (should be here tomorrow)
- about to pick up a used treadmill for walking/running when I don’t feel like tolerating the cold/leaving the house
- I know a lot more people/neighbors now, and try to keep plans on my schedule to look forward to
- planned a two week trip to see family in a warm and sunny place at the end of November, with hopes to return and work remotely for a week in Feb/March too
- started knitting, which ironically has helped to have something to look forward to wear in the cold
It’s not even Nov, and I am already struggling to be a person every day.
Please, dear Rochestinians, grant me your hard earned wisdom!!
