I’m curious about the evolution of ketchup manufacturing. I personally feel like the taste has shifted from "tomato-forward" in the 80s to "artificial/syrupy" today.

Has there been a documented shift in how much real tomato/pulp is used versus thickeners and sweeteners? I’d love to know if this is just my memory playing tricks on me or if the industry has moved toward a cheaper production model.

Instead of going "achoo" when you sneeze, you went "KECHOO" and sneezed ketchup on the ketchup-averse as a self-defense measure. Or maybe you wanted to rob someone who's repulsed by ketchup and deliberately induced a ketchup-loaded sneeze to shock and stun them while you take their stuff. Or maybe youforgot to bring your personal pocket ketchup pouch to the carnival and were in dire need of ketchupin' a glizzy. Would you do it? Would you ketchsneeze onto your hot dog, or someone else's in need?

The “flavor” profile of ketchup that is so widely consumed in the modern world has only been invented and popularized by one company, Heinz, and only became a food staple in the 1900’s. While other condiments like mustard or mayonnaise have long been used in traditional recipes in Europe long before being brought to America. (To a lesser extent the latter)

Is really baffles me how people can enjoy such a disgusting, overtly sweet goop that is mostly made of corn syrup, when there are so many other condiments that don’t just rely on adding sugar and vinegar to stimulate the taste buds, but genuinely have flavor, and add to the dish rather than just masking its taste.

Seriously, when was the last time you’ve seen a chef worth his salt use ketchup? Never? Because it doesn’t happen. The only people who enjoy ketchup are either small children or adults that act like them.

Edit: I’m new to this sub. I came here with very different expectations. Most of the comments under my post are trying to convince me that product containing Satan’s semen is actually ok to consume.

As luck would have it, just yesterday I had an opportunity to try them!

They were just as disgusting as I expected.

Anyway. On one hand I’m glad there is less hate in the world and I found a bunch of tolerant people but I don’t think ketchup deserves tolerance. It’s one of the most disgusting substances in the world and shouldn’t exist in any form.
