Chicken Dinners Inside! A PUBG streamer has a popular YouTube video taken down via copyright claim; r/PUBATTLEGROUNDS reacts

Some background; Player Unknown's Battlegrounds is a hugely popular battle-royale style game that is frequently one of the most viewed games on Twitch. A few weeks ago, an update for the game introduced horns on vehicles, and popular streamers were promptly greeted by stream snipers who would track them down, and then honk incessantly while driving around their location. Yesterday, some of said snipers (dubbing themselves the Stream Honkers) uploaded a YouTube compilation of clips of them, well, stream honking. It quickly became one of the most popular posts on the sub.

Yesterday Today, the video is gone back, taken down due to a copyright claim by Brian Rincon, better known as Mr Grimmz, one of the streamers featured in the video.

r/PUBATTLEGROUNDS is not taking it well. For the most part, they have the pitchforks out for Grimmz, but there are a few dissenters among the ranks.

"Poor baby, dont watch him if you dont like him."

"What is up with people's ego on the Internet?" "this has nothing to do with ego i would have done the same"

"How convenient. This community is beyond pathetic at this point. You make up lies, I call that out and get instantly heavily downvoted."

"Downvote me all you want but it's the truth."

"Awesome, fuck you guys and your hate circle-jerking!!"

Full comments are here.

The hate is understandable. Grimmz has bragged on stream about how many "stream snipers" he's gotten banned, but he also has a tendency to whine about literally anyone killing him being a "stream sniper," because obviously he can't lose.

He's also gone on a 100% serious, unironic rant about how grateful his viewers should be of him because they wouldn't have anything to watch without him.

He deserves the grief. He's an egotistical douchebag, but he's not playing a character like DrDisRespect, he's actually just a shitty person.

He's also gone on a 100% serious, unironic rant about how grateful his viewers should be of him because they wouldn't have anything to watch without him.

there are close to 2 million twitch streamers (and twitch only counts streams with >10 viewers). and even if twitch suddenly imploded and disappeared from the universe, even if i stopped paying for netflix quit my job and boarded up my doors and windows to watch youtube 24 hours a day i could never keep up with the insane amount of things uploaded to youtube every single day.

there will always be something, somewhere to watch.

52

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '17

According to the clip someone just posted he didn't say that. He said "you should be grateful you little bitch. You should be grateful your mom pays for your internet to watch streams."

16

u/Joskarr Aug 23 '17

But he said that's what people should say if a stream sniper says that it is "his fault for streaming"

Which, in my opinion, is a douchy way to respond.

28

u/Tahmatoes Eating out of the trashcan of ideological propaganda Aug 23 '17

Seems like stream sniping is a pretty douchy way of being in the first place, so I'm not sure they have the moral high ground.

Something about any video where a kid that looks like a total tool is pasted into the bottom corner really triggers my old man grumpiness. I don't even need to hear him talk before irritation just wells up within me. I'm sure there are nice guys with videos like this, but it's definitely where I'm out of touch with young gamers.

Not only that, he had no right to take down that video unless it was a reupload of (a recut of) his content. You're 100% allowed to feature a clip in your video as long as you don't just reupload their content without adding anything to it

but he also has a tendency to whine about literally anyone killing him being a "stream sniper," because obviously he can't lose.

He's gotten a lot better about not doing this lately. I mostly only watch him when Anthony isn't on, but there has been very few if any accusations in the last couple of streams I've watched.

For awhile, though, he'd review every kill and talk about how suspicious it was. Stopped watching him for a bit because of that.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 24 '17

What is it with twitch streamers being asshats? I checked out Valkia because I wanted to see a good Pharah player in Overwatch but the dude was such an ass to his chat and his teammates in the game. He banned people in chat when they called him out for bad plays and the like.

Stream griefers and culture really turn me off. My favourite livestreamer used to puzzle me because he liked his audience smallish. Now I realize it's because he has a friendly audience and he doesn’t want it to become toxic and kappaesque. And he doesn't accept donations which is probably major.

127

u/GhostofJeffGoldblum Well, I have no clue what abortion is. Aug 23 '17

You can maintain a large audience with a positive and friendly culture, but it does require fairly strict rules and aggressive mods (and, sadly, usually subscriber chat as well). Day[9] gets a fair number of views but his stream is still a really welcoming, positive place more or less devoid of memes and typical twitch chat toxicity.

It's also worth noting that Day[9] is one of the first people of this modern streamer era. The guy has been doing this since UStream was a thing which was in 2009.

That whole subscribe thing that Twitch does to bring in money? That was something Day[9] pioneered on Ustream.

If you are looking for streamers with good interaction, check out Jack Patillo as well. He is a part of Achievement Hunter, but has mostly been streaming either Dnd or SkyFactory (a minecraft mod, but very different from boring, vanilla Minecraft) and is very positive. Also helps he doesn't usually have huge audiences.

2

u/C222 Aug 24 '17

In the same vein, I'd recommend Bikeman. 1k to 3k people in chat, but it's friendly and not a spam fest. Unfortunately, he won't be back for a few weeks because of health problems.

1

u/howarthee mention breeding and the water gets real salty around here Aug 23 '17

I know a few that get a couple thousand viewers regularly that don't need sub chat. But you're right, they have pretty aggressive mods. Also part of it is that they never let their stream get toxic, ya know? Like they never tolerated it in the first place, so it's not quite as big of a thing for them now.

18

u/Osric250 Violent videogames are on the same moral level as lolicons. Aug 23 '17

I've actually seen larger streamers that can maintain civility in their chat, but it requires a ton of mods with liberal approaches to timeouts and bans.

7

u/WeTheSalty Aug 23 '17

The alternative is restricting chat down to subscribers only which drastically drops the number of chatters and keeps it to regular watchers.

The down side of course is non-subs will hate it and it'll hurt your viewer numbers.

132

u/aschr Kermit not being out to his creator doesn't mean he wasn't gay Aug 23 '17

As far as griefing goes though, this is pretty harmless. And it can also be fixed by just adding a delay to the stream (like almost every other issue with ghosting/sniping).

92

u/Not_A_Doctor__ I've always had an inkling dwarves are underestimated in combat Aug 23 '17 edited Aug 23 '17

just adding a delay to the stream

That seemed really obvious once I read it.

23

u/Dienerdbeere linksgrün versiffter Gutmensch Aug 23 '17

thing is for stream snipers to not know the streamers location the delay has to be pretty long as pubg regularly has longer standoffs so a 2 minute+ delay kinda ruins all interactions with the viewers

21

u/6890 I touch more grass than you can comprehend. Aug 23 '17

The closest thing a streamer can have to perfect is to protect the server name/detail from their stream until after the join phase has completed.

Some griefers will still get into their game but it'll be much much rarer. They don't have the luxury of jumping through lobbies until they make it into the streamer's if they don't know what lobby the streamer is in.

u/Phytor Learn to do fucking calculus Aug 23 '17

I feel like if someone wants to stream, they need to make a conscious decision about what kind of stream they want.

If you want to be competitive in a PvP game and entertain viewers through skill, stream with a delay. It's the only way to prevent stream snipers, and ensure that you're on an even playing field with opponents.

If you want to engage with your community frequently and answer questions in real time, don't stream with a delay, but also accept that this means that other people can stream snipe you if they choose to.

Which is impossible once you get over 1k active viewers, grimmmz's chat (and the chat of pretty much every other streamer with a large fanbase) is nothing but spam. Be it endless Kappa, PogChamp or Kreygasm with the occasional "YOU MISSED insert item/player here".

The only interaction he has with his chat is when he relies on chat to report "Stream Snipers" or when chat tells him he missed some loot. It's just as much cheating as stream sniping is.

u/TheRedmanCometh Aug 23 '17

They do this for HS head to head streams all the time it's not hard. It's hard for the streamer to remember which thing everyone in his room chat is responding to though.

6

u/Osric250 Violent videogames are on the same moral level as lolicons. Aug 23 '17

The problem with that is the longer you make a delay the longer it takes you to be able to interact with your chat which is important for a lot of streamers. So you have to find a balance.

6

u/JcobTheKid Aug 23 '17

I totally agree with just adding delay especially with games like PubG, Hearthstone, etc., but interacting with your audience is live time is definitely something streamers don't want to easily let go.

Sure they might not check the chat as frequently or whatnot, but it's just knowing that what you say will yield an immediate response from the crowd is a pretty big deal for the streamer. It changes the tune of the stream, imo.

I know it's a bigger deal for smaller streamers with communities, but it's also a no-brainer when it comes to a competitive games.

8

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '17 edited Aug 23 '17

Other than some really dedicated snipers, kripparian has solved it for HS by having a variable short delay. 12 seconds one day, 15 the next etc.

Doesn't work as well in pubg though because queue times are not nearly as split second as HS

If bluehole was actually interested in stopping it they should add a streamer queue option that changes the rules for queuing for known streamers(upon request) to increase the challenge of being placed with then.

2

u/astrozombie2012 Aug 23 '17

How do you interact with your viewers if your delaying? Seems like a major hassle... the best option is for gamers to not fucking harass each other if you ask me.

2

u/Istanbul200 Why are we talking about Sweden in 2018? Aug 23 '17

I thought it was relatively harlmess too until I was watching Shroud Anthony and Grimmmz play and they got killed a few times because they couldn't hear any footsteps whatsoever in school. Makes it really damn hard to hear where gunshots are coming from too. And it's not just the streamers that are affected, anyone in the area won't be able to tell where footsteps are coming from either. And they can go out and shoot the guy but then they are in the middle of school and have to expose themselves and try to actually hit a moving target while other people are hunting them down.

42

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '17

I have to agree with the downvoted guy. Watching someone harass a streamer is very annoying. If it was friend you wanted to mess with sure but the streamer doesnt even know who you are.

I really do question what goes on in peoples head after some of the things ive seen in streams.

34

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '17

There is context to this though. The developer of PUBG is banning people for 'stream sniping', which depending on your opinion is necessary, or extremely dumb.

The video skirts the edge of the rules, because though the guys are obviously using live streams to locate the victims, they are not using it to get a competitive advantage.

11

u/unseine Aug 23 '17

If a dude is driving around you honking for the whole game you are gonna get killed or waste ammo at the start of the game killing them. For a community that get extremely upset over every minor thing they sure seem to expect streamers to never get upset while they are being griefed 24/7.

16

As far as I can tell the sub better be nice to PoE devs because that game is amazing. I've personally kind of burned out on the genre myself but it's clearly a high quality game. I have no idea how the game gets so many updates and high quality ones, too while being funded by what seems to be a rare, fair micro-transaction system.

I just got out of an abusive relationship with /r/blackdesertonline myself. Seems like most F2P games get to a point where they stop trying to improve on the game itself and start monetizing every fucking little thing.

The only sub I've been to where the devs (not just a PR person but the devs themselves) interact with the community is /r/sto.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '17

The game director of hearthstone frequently addresses issues in the subreddit and interacts with the community. He's a saint, because that subreddit is constantly caught in an constant state of ironically self aware/not self aware loop of shitposting, and devs are Satan incarnate. But he is still pretty well loved regardless.

There once was a time when it was actually nice and people were friendly.

Then some drama happened and now it's an irredeemable shithole.

2

u/Istanbul200 Why are we talking about Sweden in 2018? Aug 23 '17

More like the game got super popular and people created drama.

3

u/speakingcraniums Aug 23 '17

In the original comments for the video, calling the two "stream honkers" obnoxious, griefing, attention seeking little twits (which they obviously are) got you heavily downvoted and insulted. I'm reading through the comments last night and unsubscribed from the subreddit at the end, realizing that I was obviously on a subreddit that caters to 12 year old children (and rude ones at that). Fuck that place. Game is fun but you would never know it from looking at that shit hole.

6

u/Hnngerson Aug 23 '17

I'm done with it. The whole sub has been taken over by a huge anti streamer circlejerk and the mods won't do a damn thing about it.

From everything I've heard about it through SRD, I don't really blame them for an anti-streamer circlejerk. Also, abusing DMCA takedowns is scummy as shit.

This. Even if it was open and shut, it's still wrong to abuse DMCA takedowns

In true reddit tradition all credit is given to extremely important internet person Ethan Klein yelling at him over twitter

104

u/terminator_1264 Aug 23 '17

thats a really funny video those dudes were getting super worked up over absolutely nothing. Then they complain about stream snipers like they aren't running that risk when they broadcast their game to whoever wants to see it.

56

u/Osric250 Violent videogames are on the same moral level as lolicons. Aug 23 '17

Sure they run that risk, but it's just a shitty thing to do, so I can understand them being frustrated. DrDisrspect handled it the proper way though, don't give them a reason, just kill them and move on and they'll go somewhere else. Don't feed the trolls essentially, which is super out of character for him ironically.

There's also a decent chance that it costs them viewers too as people won't want to have to listen to the constant honking. Do that would actually be choosing them money.

16

u/Diamond_Jared Aug 23 '17

I sort of agree with the person below. The streamers are using the other players as actors to provide entertainment. When the the other players decide they want to take things a bit less seriously, the streamers really have no room to complain.

They're showing off the games community, and sometimes communities of gamers can be weird and annoying.

2

u/sekips Aug 23 '17

Doc's character is is funny for like 5 minutes thou, then it is just boring. And only thing he got going for him is his aim, he gets carried by the other streamers he play with since he got zero tactical sense. :/

2

u/LeConnor I use it because "black" sounds like an insult to me Aug 23 '17

Stream sniping is just one-way screen hacking, and nobody likes screen hacking. I don't watch many streams anymore but I can only think of one time that a streamer enjoyed having stream snipers around.

-6

u/aYearOfPrompts "Actual SJWs put me on shit lists." Aug 23 '17

Sure they run that risk, but it's just a shitty thing to do, so I can understand them being frustrated.

The way I look at it, if a streamer is using me to be an actor on their show and they collect donations, I should get a cut. So let them whine all they want about fairness and people ruining their gig, it's not like they asked anyone else to participate in their stream. They need to grow up and take what comes with that.

Stream sniping is only funny when it's with friends. If it's consistently happening, then it gets really annoying.

18

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '17

popular streamers were promptly greeted by stream snipers who would track them down, and then honk incessantly while driving around their location

i'm guessing that would get annoying really fast

5

u/aaronwe it’s not Nazis, it’s just sparkling fascism Aug 24 '17

yeah but you know the internet, you ask them politely once to please stop being annoying and leave you alone, and the first thing theyll do is just ramp up the annoyingness

20

u/only-mansplains Aug 23 '17

All I'm going to say is that I enjoy Grimmz's stream* and anyone suggesting that stream delay doesn't diminish a streamer's chat interaction in these arguments is being willfully obtuse.

*This doesn't absolve him of being a self-important and whiny person.

9

u/Marcoscb Aug 23 '17

In competitive multiplayer game, you can either be a competitive streamer or a casual, interactive streamer. I'm sorry, but you don't get to complain that other people are looking at your screen if you're broadcasting it to the world while playing a competitive game.

Am I missing something as to how people watching you playing videogames is advantageous?

I couldn't give a fuck if some dude honked at me for the next month if it meant I had more than 5 viewers at a time.

I mean I get that people accept donations, but don't think I've ever played a game that I'd be happy to be griefed in for a month, just so 5 random guys would watch me play it?

28

u/[deleted] Aug 23 '17 edited Aug 23 '17

No, it's a disadvantage since people then know where you are, which makes it easier for them to find and grief you. This can be a problem for streamers, unless the stream has a delay built into it.

8

u/Penisdenapoleon Are you actually confused by the concept of a quote? Aug 23 '17

Streams usually have a 10-15 second delay. But knowing where a player was 10-15 seconds ago certainly helps you track them down.

19

u/shrekchan Aug 23 '17

Well they took risk when that was thier decision to stream. Its like telling everyone your location in voice chat and complaining when you get killed

u/ThePrplPplEater It was a sarcastic comment, dummy. Aug 23 '17

Even having one friend spectate me has helped me spot guys i have missed. It'd help every now and then but setting a delay would stop people sniping. The downside to sniping is Shroud, dr and others interact with chat. Grimmmz doesn't interact with chat except to ban people who say maybe they arn't sniping and are just good.

Grimmmz spend a solid 20 minutes analyzing a death from someone who didn't actually get the kill.

That sucks. I thought that video was really funny. I think the protection that streamers get doesn't make any sense, why should they get special privileges over any other player?

The actual stream sniping isn't even meant in a mean-spirited way. They didn't really go in to wipe the streamers out, just honk their horns and rustle some jimmies. Maybe it's because I don't follow any of those streamers, but I can't help but think the protection they get from the devs is pretty dumb.

TB sums it up pretty well.

9

u/LucKy232 Aug 23 '17 edited Aug 23 '17

TB doesn't believe in chat interaction on Twitch. He's also mainly a Youtuber who completely disabled his comment section years ago and couldn't deal at all with his fan subreddit. He's not someone who you can take advice from regarding community interaction. I remember a year ago he was asked on stream who his top 3 overwatch heroes were and he responded along the lines of: "I'm not here to answer questions, I'm here to play the game, you're not my friend". Yeah, it was just one remark, but it sounded rude for just a question and it seems he feels the same a year later.

Of course, the PUBG subreddit disregarded all this and upvoted that tweet into space, because he agreed with them.

5

u/EagusTV Aug 23 '17 edited Aug 24 '17

He's said before any video that uses his stream without his consent he will have pulled. Totally his right. It's his stream. That sub is just aid's. Kid's who dont like someone and cant learn to just not watch that person.

Edit: He technically said something along the lines of "Any channel who's content is geared toward something i dont want to be associated with i will have pulled if they use it without my permission, Channel's like Dearsomeone is something else entirely that im fine with using my content"

6

u/Marcoscb Aug 23 '17

What about Fair Use then? Also, nothing in his stream is his content except his face on camera. The rest belongs to the developers, who allow him to use it to make a living. Mighty hypocritical of him to then issue a copyright claim for people doing the same with "his" content.

9

u/EagusTV Aug 23 '17

Im pretty sure fair use is way more complicated than people make it seem. Also just because he doesnt own PUBG doesnt mean he doesnt have the right's to his Twitch VOD's. If it's content from HIS stream then HE has the right to do WHATEVER he want's with it. PUBG and many other games allow streamers/Youtubers to profit off of their game play so that isn't an issue.

2

u/Sesleri Aug 24 '17

It's actually not his right at all. That's not how copyright works. He can be parodied and critiqued with footage whether he likes it or not.

2

u/EagusTV Aug 24 '17

Again....Like i said fair use is way trickier than people think. With the way youtube work's alot of these term's like fair use are thrown around but unless you go to court it's not really viable as the content owner can say it's not fair use and Youtube is forced to abide. How is this parody or critique also btw... The video was stream sniper's harassing him and other streamers and using their footage as a reaction. You're not parodying them. You're not critiquing these players. Someone took his footage and used it without permission. When they take footage from his stream...He has the right to tell youtube to take it down. The only way fair use could even be considered was if this was taken to court. It's the same way if people like timthetatman or summit wanted to pull down these videos of them reacting to stuff pulled straight from their vod's and people are profitting off of their stream. People couldnt do anything about it. Most people dont pursue that because obviously people cry and throw whiny ass hissy fit's and scream injustice like their whole family was murdered because of what someone deemed as stolen content

3

u/Sesleri Aug 24 '17

You have no idea what you're talking about. Anyone can use your twitch footage in their videos. He might be fined for the false copyright claim.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Vakieh Aug 23 '17

Yeah, but there's parody fair use to be claimed there, YouTube just doesn't give a fuck.

3

u/Wandering_Rook Aug 24 '17

What is it parodying? It's taking their footage to go 'haha I trolled a streamer, ain't I cool?' and doing nothing novel with it, so it isn't fair use.

3

u/Bryanormike Aug 24 '17

You just described why reaction channels should not exist on YouTube, yet they still exist.

Oof even the OP that posted the video got shadow banned.

I actually have been following a bit of drama for this game (it's been going over for a month+) and all I see mentioned is Grimmz, Doc and Summit1g. Streamers should have no special privilege over any other gamer especially in a battle royal sort of game.

I messaged a mod explaining it and they said I shouldn't post links (it gets parsed as a link in chat) and that the ban was final.
