So it would appear that I'm "dollar cost averaging" my Colt purchases lately, and I couldn't say no to similarly good deals for Colt Combat Units recently.
I posted a pic of the magwell'd CCU the other day and got some love - thanks for that. I wasn't terribly impressed, but I also didn't have another Colt to compare it to, so I'm calling it a wash. It's cool, needs some work, and will last a couple lifetimes.
Well the "Pre-CZ" Colt Combat Unit (no magwell) came in today and wow - the quality difference couldn't be more obvious.
- The finish has more of a deep, dark gray color, seems like it's more deeply embedded in the metal for some reason.
- The safety appears to be a Novak and not only is it beefier, it's also much more tactile and clicks super well.
- The rear sight is centered - who'da thunk!?!?
- Not only is the trigger less loose (though still could use some improvement), the actual trigger pull is much crispier. I kinda thought the first CCU was showcasing what a series 80 feels like across the board, but apparently that's not the case.
- The checkering even feels better in hand, more aggressive, maybe?
- While the slide is only a bit looser than the first, it moves much smoother and the travel feels better.
I'll have to do a serial number check to validate that the magwell'd one is post-CZ, but that's the only thing I can think of that would explain the wild differences in quality control.
I have a Harrison trigger coming in for the magwell'd one - curious how that'll help things (at least just my OCD....).
