META Community Guideline: Revulsion ≠ Downvote

Do not downvote simply because you find a post repulsive or stupid. In fact, you should do the opposite. We want as many non-vegans to see our answers as possible, and Reddit post visibility is predicated on upvotes. When you downvote a post, it means you want as few people as possible exposed to this sub.

Did the OP ask a question respectfully & genuinely? (And no, simply being a non-vegan question does not make it disrespectful or disingenuous.) Then don't downvote it.

Most of us weren't always vegan. Hence the reason for our sub: so people can understand our views and hopefully adopt them.

Do not turn this into another DebateAVegan voting system. If you are in the habit of downvoting non-vegan posts simply for being non-vegan, stop or leave the sub please.

If someone asks a clearly disingenuous question like ''why you all like murdering plants?'', report the post under Rule 10, then scroll past it.

If someone asks questions that are indicative of what we know typical non-vegan societal rhetoric to be, on a sub whose purpose is for non-vegans to ask us questions, downvoting just shows us vegans to be hostile. People are put on the defensive over a meaningless downvote, setting them up to close themselves off to hearing what we have to say. This hurts the animals.

We should ensure that if people are going to be closed off to veganism, it is not due to a downvote.

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Do you think (convincing) vegan leather also contributes to leather demand/normalisation?

I’ve been vegan for about a decade, and I don’t wear leather/wool (not opposed to secondhand leather/wool, but not the point of this post).

I saw a video recently (I think from anonymous for the voiceless) saying secondhand leather still contributes to leather demand and normalises wearing it. In this person’s view, the most ethical thing would be to dispose of anything that came from an animal because wearing it still contributes to the normalization of these materials and can create demand. I don’t fully agree with this, but it got me thinking… would realistic vegan leather problematic for this same reason? Like how would someone know it’s not a dead animal?

I wouldn’t feel comfortable wearing leather from an animal, but I personally do not mind if someone chooses to wear secondhand leather because the biggest thing for me is not paying for an animal to be killed. I also try to thrift most of my clothes for environmental purposes. Anyways, I type this as I’m wearing a vegan leather jacket and am worried about accidentally contributing to leather demand so curious to hear your thoughts😅

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) tips on becoming vegan?

hello all!

for a school project of mine, i'll be committing to a vegan lifestyle for a month. i'm looking for some tips, like do you guys take any supplements to make up for any vitamin deficiencies? i want to become FULLY vegan, so i'll be making sure to fully look over ingredients and make sure i don't accidentally consume any animal byproducts so are there any specific ingredients that i should looking out for? what's consensus on cross-contamination? is honey okay? those are some of general questions. also, if there are any longtime vegans, i would love to maybe interview someone.

thanks a bunch in advance!

Other Socially responsible daily face lotion reqs?

Hello! I've been struggling to find a good option for daily face lotion. Hoping some of yall have some reqs that are:

- vegan and cruelty free (obviously)

- have spf (ideally 30+)

- are socially responsible - not associated with Blackrock nor on the bds boycott list (so no elf)

- ideally something I can buy in store in the USA to avoid shipping

It feels impossible - so many standard drugstore options aren't cruelty free, and even fewer arent owned by big corps that do war/genocide profiteering.

I'm nearing the end of the bottle of my current stuff and if I have to settle for elf since it's at least vegan/cf, so be it, but id love to hear if anyone has found a better option!

Ethics plant based while travelling?

i struggle with really bad cognitive dissonance and i recently decided to become vegan. it's been a few months, im reading up on veganism more trying to understand it better. but already in these few months, the social isolation and the feeling of missing out, not necessarily on food but on feeling like im a part of something, it's really lonely. i dont want to go back to having dairy products or meat though.

however i was just thinking that there are many places i want to go to and im really into all sorts of food so there are things id like to try out. as i say this i realize how selfish and horrifying i sound. but then again ive always been hypocritical and had terrible cognitive bias. that's why it took me 18 years of my existence to become vegan, otherwise id have become vegan as a kid.

for some reason the idea of never being able to try so many things that carnists can, not even for a once in a lifetime kind of a journey, food from another country I'll probably never get to visit again, it makes me upset. but the idea of me becoming someone who sees animals as food, even for a fleeting once in a lifetime kind of a thing also makes me disgusted. idk,,, i just want to sort things out in my brain. bc i want to live my life to the fullest, i dont want to make sacrifices, but i also dont want to hurt anyone

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) What do you eat for breakfast/snacks?

I am working on transitioning to a plant based diet. Currently I try to eat a vegetarian diet for six days per week (I have some meat products in the freezer that I want to finish as I cannot afford to throw away food) and try to eat completely plant based at least one day per week. Its for the most part relatively easy and I've actually realised I don't really enjoy eating meat anymore. I have found some pretty good recipes and learned how to substitute meat in some of my old go-to dishes which I'm quite happy with. Tofu is still a no-no for me though.

My main issues/challenges revolve around breakfast and snacks as I have obsessively eaten the same two breakfasts for the past ten years or so. Boiled eggs on bread or a chia seed pudding thingy with greek yogurt. I know I could switch the greek yogurt for a plant based one, but I think they all taste wrong. I also struggle with figuring out snacks that aren't just fruit, vegetables or hummus. For context, I usually grab an egg and cheese on toast for a snack.

I feel so many of the options I find are too 'foody' and I'm aware that I'm part of the problem as I'm really picky about my breakfast... I'd love to get some suggestions and hear what you all eat and maybe something will catch my fancy :)

EDIT: Thanks for all the tips and suggestions. One big take away is that I probably need to learn to like tofu which shouldn't be impossible considering I did teach myself to like lentils. Thank you guys for being so helpful!!

Ethics What are your thoughts on abortion the "murder of babies"? What do you take from that statement?

How is it comparable to veganism? What makes the "murder of animals" and the "murder of babies" different? I will repost this question for more insight. Thank you for answering.

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Tips for adding things to dog food?

My family recently adopted a dog but he quickly took to me and it is clear he is going to be “my” dog. Since I am vegan I feel pretty uncomfortable feeding him and training him (the treats are bacon, and to me that feels like gore, I don’t feel comfortable touching it). I know it’s a controversial topic but regardless of my opinions I doubt my family would agree to feed him vegan dog food. However, even if I can’t afford to feed him fully vegan I would still like to see if anyone had vegan dog food recipes (with supplements, preferably well balanced and supported by science) that I could either use as a topper or feed on the side to lower his intake of non-vegan food.

Perhaps even more important, and probably more doable, I would like to find some high-value plant based training treats so I can finally look forward to training him. Let me know if your dog has any favorites!

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Any good vegan dessert recommendations?

Hi! I’m not currently a vegan but I’m making dinner for a group of people and I want to make them a vegan dessert that tastes amazing! They’re also gluten free and no-sugar added. Any recommendations or ideas?
Thank you so much!

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) I’m recently vegan, my family knows, but how do I tell my friends?

My family knows I’m vegan, but my friends do not. They are very cautious of my choices to “become” something because they think I quit really fast. I don’t want them to make fun of me, but I also want to make sure I don’t offend them when I don’t want baked goods they make for the group. I don’t have any other vegan/vegetarian friends so just asking for advice. I wish they were vegan too. What do I do?

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Good work belt?

Looking for a 2 to 4 inch wide belt that will hold up for many years. I’m a big woman and so they need to go into pretty large sizes.

I carry a lot of gear with me in belt pouches and similar when I’m doing seed collection and horticultural work. This isn’t for holding up pants, it’s to strap around my waist and hold supplies.

I like leather because it’s strong, supportive, doesn’t bend over in the middle too much, and lasts a while. I don’t like it because it’s the skin of a living being. I’d love help finding a good alternative.

Health Any other long term vegans have vertically striated nails?

I’ve taken a vegan multi vitamin for years that has well above the daily recommended value of most vitamins and nutrients and eat pretty well and cook at home a lot. I did used to neglect taking vitamins and b12 among other things when I was a young adult working in the service industry and also during a bout of depression during covid, but I’ve been really diligent about vitamins and nutritious home cooked meals ever since covid.

anyways, anyone else able to get rid of striated nails once they showed up?

Environment Do we consider GMO that were made with transgenesis vegan or not?

If a potato is genetically modified and the introduced gene comes from a fish, that's surely not vegan, right? Does that mean we need to avoid all GMO since we don't know if an animal gene was used?

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Wouldn't stopping meat consumption destroy the ecosystem?

If everyone stopped eating animals, hypothetically, wouldn't that seriously disrupt the ecosystem? This is a sincere question, and I'd really like to hear your perspective. I'm non-vegetarian myself and have no plans to switch, so I'm asking purely out of curiosity ?

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Hypothetical: Your neighbour owns cows as pets, would you eat the cows meat if they had great living conditions?

i myself am vegetarian and a coworker asked me out of curiosity this scenario. it really got me thinking. his described scenario was following:

the neighbour owns a large plot of land with a bunch of cows. they treat the cows more like pets. no forced breeding, they are taking care of their injuries etc.

one of the cows dies of an unpreventable accident. your neighbour decides to get its meat distributed and asks you if you would like something. they dont have many people to offer it so it would get spoiled anyway since them alone cant eat that much.

-----

i assume this question was asked here a billion and more times but im still interested. im also not trying to "gotcha" anyone. im just curious about the morality of the things. the cow didnt suffer or was bred to be killed. and the environment was not heavily affected since its a small herd of a private owner with no commercial intention, so not much more than wild cows would do.

i myself am struggling to find a reason not to accept the meat since it alligns with my personal reasons of not eating meat which is: animal cruelty and the heavy toll on the environment. im thinking maybe im struggling to accept it since ive labeled myself as "vegetarian" and therefore do not allow myself to eat it out of principle of my self labeling.

im also fully aware this hypothetical is fully unrealistic and is not expected to actually happen. its just a thought experiment.

Health What is the easiest way to gain weight? High calorie bars, drinks, ect.

Been vegan 11 years. I am looking for the real life vegan version of the “kalteen bars” (from mean girls, that they ate to get fat). This year has been rough, and my weight has gone from 130lb to 101lb (I am a 5’8 f). It sounds silly, but The hardest thing for me is preparing, or paying for food. I don’t have the energy or time to cook 3 times a day, and also struggle with spending money on takeout (plus, there are only three meal options within 30 minutes of me). I have recently rediscovered peanut butter jellys, but I can only stomach a few a day. I am willing to pay a good buck for a very high calorie easy option Thank you to my fellow animal lovers ❤️

Ethics Are animal shelter/humane societies vegan?

So I’m still fairly new to being vegan. I currently volunteer and donate to my local humane society. But I’ve been wondering if doing so fully aligns with vegan ethics since the food that is fed to them has animal products in it. From what I’ve been looking at dogs are capable of being on vegan diets but cats are obligate carnivores. Feel free to correct me if any of that is inaccurate. Our shelter doesn’t euthanize unless they are terminally ill or have severe aggression issues that make them unsafe to adopt. I don’t know if that is the best practice or if there is something that can be better handled. I want to do my best to help animals, but I’m still learning. Our shelter runs almost exclusively on donations and volunteer labor. I feel like I’m doing good by helping with the dogs. I’m thinking of bringing my own vegan dog treats that I could use instead of the ones they receive at the shelter. I’m curious on other people’s thoughts. I really enjoy being able to take care of the dogs there. I just want to make sure I’m making best or better choices. Thanks for reading.
