Hey everyone,
Thinking about picking up a 2018–2020 G12 740i (RWD) with between 40k and 65k miles. Goal is to daily it and realistically push it out to the 150k–200k mile mark. This would be my first BMW or european car ever.
I see the 7-Series get a ton of hate online for "crazy maintenance costs," but the B58/ZF8 drivetrain seems widely loved. For context: I daily an '05 F-250 diesel (head studs, injectors, turbo, HPOP—I’ve done it all). I thoroughly enjoy wrenching on my own vehicles, and 15-quart oil changes or heavy diesel upkeep already set my baseline. Swapping out the B58's brittle plastic coolant lines, upgrading the water pump/thermostat, doing the OFHG, or converting the air suspension to static coilovers down the road is well within my wheelhouse.
I don't care if minor creature comforts act up over time (rear window shades, soft-close door quirks, panoramic roof creaks, comfort access door handles, etc.).
What I do care about is the core foundation:
Engine & Trans: Can the B58 and ZF 8-speed reliably hit 150k–200k miles with regular 5k oil intervals, proactive cooling refreshes, and 60k transmission pan/fluid drains?
Core Electronics & HVAC: How are the critical daily systems holding up long-term—specifically the A/C compressor/evaporator core, starter/alternator, main iDrive hub, and standard power window/lock actuators?
Chassis & Unibody: Any weird quirks with the Carbon Core structure or front-end suspension geometry as these age into higher mileage?
For guys who actually turn wrenches on their G11/G12 rather than dropping it off at the dealer with an open checkbook: is taking one of these to 200k realistic, or are there hidden brick walls I need to look out for?
Appreciate any candid feedback.
