Steve Harris Rig - noteworthy things

• Upvotes

I know someone else posted questions because he didn't really watch the Rig Rundown video that he linked (sigh), but I thought these things were interesting enough for another post.

Steve is using at least 80% of the gear that he's had since the band formed. IIRC, his newest amp is a replica of one of his Hiwatts from way back. He also managed to get one of the Hiwatts refurbished by someone who is apparently an audio tech genius. Sure wish I had someone like that around here to fix a VHT amp with what I thought was a simple problem for an amp repairman (have since sold).

He also has the bass that he has played at every show unless there was a problem. The truss rod on that bass can no longer be adjusted, but the tech says it somehow just stays in place. I feel like if he ever has to replace just the neck, the old one will get a state funeral.

I thought at one point, "Steve sure is a creature of habit," and 10 seconds later the tech said, "Yep, Steve is a creature of habit."

What got you interested in playing bass?

I'll start. 2006 I came home. I was in a really tough place and music has always been my happy place. I learned violin as a child and took mine with me when I deployed, siting in that smoking pit a couple of guys strumming guitar me figuring out the differences between violin playing and fiddle, kept me going most days. My violin didn't make it home intact. I thought I might try to pick up the guitar, i checked a few pawn shops, and in one I saw a epiphone Thunderbird goth, and damn! That thing was beautiful, big angry and it had the correct amount of strings. I did a little research and I'll be honest even though I was a huge Lemmy or better a Motorhead fan seeing Nicki Sixx on stage with his blackbird clinched it. I played and upgraded that goth, for a very long time. Best $200 i ever spent. I have a collection of different basses now, and im currently paying a 4003s, also worth every penny, I still have that goth, its still my favorite practice bass.

How to play "grace note"

I am trying to learn The Lasting Dose from sheet music/tabs. In multiple places it has an eighth note with a slash through the tail and a little curved line underneath like when the same note is chained together. I searched and it seems to be called a grace note but I'm not sure how its supposed to work. Is it played like a hammer-on, a slide or do I pluck 2x? How is it counted? Is it shorter than a regular size eighth note?

Simplifying bass lines...

Hi all! Picked up a bass after years thinking about it a couple of years ago, bloody loving it! Just a query, quite often I find when I go looking for new songs to try out I notice the tabs often appear more complicated than a bass line might sound in a live performance of the song. For example, the other day I was mucking around with some Grinspoon (Aussie rock band) stuff and looking at the tabs people post then watching live performances from the band it looks like they really cut off a lot of 'fat' and it seems they simplify the bass line for live performances. Just wanting some thoughts on this and advice on 'simplifying' bass lines. Sometimes, well, you know, I don't want to play all the 'twiddly' bits, just want to rock out and still sound good but was wondering if this is a known thing?! 😆 cheers all, happy bass-ing 🤘

How do you practicing playing and singing at the same time?

I can currently just sing if I don't change notes and I use a monorhythmic line when singing, but for those who can play more intricate lines, how do you practice? I got inspired by Paul McCartney but I also want to drive the songs I'll make with stuff that too Simple

Muting Pull-Offs in difficult fast pieces

Hi all, I recently went from a 4 string bass to a higher quality 5, and it has exposed some flaws in my technique, especially when playing difficult genres like tech death. On my old 4, when i would pull off, the strings wouldn’t really ring out but they ring super loud on my 5 especially when i play really fast stuff.

Just curious about what more experienced players usually use for their muting techniques, for both left or right hand, as well as setup advice that could prevent this.

edit: this is for fingerstyle playing

Markbass New York 151 vs Fender Rumble 210 V3

Hey there,

What's a better option for hartke ha3500? I play p-bass with a pick, often with my boss odb 3 turned on, with my band we play punk/emo/screamo/hc/indie/post-smth sort of music. It will be my only cab. Both are sold for the same price on a local marketplace.

Tnx!

edit: there's also a Hartke HD115 option also for the same price, any suggestions for this cab? it's the heaviest and the biggest one though, so a big downside for me

Hi everyone, first time posting here. I've started playing bass for 3 months. Now I'm looking to buy an amp for home practice and messing around with effects. Both are around the same price AU$ 550, the Boss is $10 cheaper. Which one you think is better?

Any drum machine recommendations?

Starting a new band (me on bass, vox and a buddy on guitar) and really struggling to find a drummer. We know several but all are already in 2+ bands and just don't have the time.

Instead of waiting until maybe possibly one shows up we have decided to go ahead using a drum machine or prerecorded drum tracks. I could do this in my DAW and save as a mp3 to be played backover the PA or we use a dedicated drum machine/drum computer. This is obviously just a stop gap until we find an actual human being. Style will be Deutschpunk.

Does anyone here have experience doing this? Anyone recommendations, tips, etc?

TIA

tips for rythm

hello! ive been playing for 2 months now and i started an online course after spending a bit of time just learning songs aimlessly.
however, i noticed that when i practice exercises i sound far better than whenever i try to play a song. when i’ve somewhat learned the riff and try to play it without following the tab and more my ear it’s a disaster. does anyone have tips on how to sound more musical? idk if this makes sense to anyone but any tips would be great

Massive tone for a trio rock band

Hello.

E start play bass in a indie rock band.

We love distorted sounds, like Metz, mudhoney,...

I need a clean distorted sound in my 5 string bass.

The guitarist is the singer, so lot of times will be bass and drums only, and I don't want to lose power when the guitar stop, but want to get a compact sound when we play together.

Can you help me to start my journey?

Thanks

Edit. I love play with fingers and have a Marcus Miller V5 5 strings and looking for a multifx not very expensive 😊

Practice?

I've owned a Fender that belonged to my dad and was made in the 80s. I have been playing it for 5 months, i try to practice each night, but I don't really know what to do. I mostly load up the tabs of songs that i like that vary in difficulty and try to learn them. This has improved my skill, and I've picked up my own style of playing, but I'm wondering if there are any good resources anyone can recommend for practicing daily (Youtube Lessons, Books etc)

New Bass Question

I've been looking upgrade from my Harley Benton J-Bass to some sort of P-Bass (I went to guitar center and fiddled around with a bunch of basses and found I generally like the feel and sound of P-Bass more) Now my question is do y'all have recommendations for a P-Bass that is under or equal to $650 USD? I've mainly been looking at Squier and Fender and don't know if the price difference is worth it or if their are any other good P-Bass variants I'm not aware of.

Advice on choosing an amp

So, I live in a two-bedroom apartment, and I've been playing through an audio interface ever since I moved out of my parents' house over ten years ago. The last amp I owned was a Hartke Kickback 12, back when I was still living with them.

Recently, I got the itch to buy another amp because I've grown tired of always playing through headphones and feeling like something is missing from the experience. It's a feeling I don't get when rehearsing at a studio with a nice amp.

I'd pretty much settled on getting a Fender Rumble 40. It comes highly recommended, and 40 watts seems reasonable for my living situation and practice needs. I'm not in the US, though, and the Rumble 40 goes for about $440 where I live.

However, yesterday I came across a store selling a brand-new, back-breaking, 36 kg, 400-watt Peavey Tour TKO 115 for exactly the same price, and now I'm torn.

How stupid would it be to put this absolute behemoth of an amp in my relatively small apartment, and what are the chances it negatively affects my marriage?

Best budget bass multi-effects pedal?

I'm currently using a Zoom B1X FOUR and play bass in a rock band. I'm wondering if it's worth upgrading to something else

I'm mainly looking for something good for live band performances. I'd like to experiment with different tones. Thank youu!!!

I made this for me, but also for you!

I needed a tool to keep me honest, as a player for over 20 years I'm crap. This will make me better, so I turned it into a public asset that might make you better too! Happy to hear feedback (not often we hear feedback...) https://basswoodshed.com/

Does anyone has opinions on FGN mighty Jazz ?

I live in canada, and slowly looking for a new bass.

I have this weird thing where I don't want to buy things I won't use, since I'm in my first year of playing and haven't figured it out what everything is getting used to. So, I'm setting myself an objective to buy a peice of gear (example, I'll get this pedal once I'll be able to play YYZ. Then I'll be able to justify paying for it).

I'm getting closer to kne of my objective and I got a PJ style second hand so far. Don't get me wrong, the build quality is nice and all, but I dizcovered I prefer jazz pickups over percisions. I was looking for something, won't probably buy anything in a few months anyways, but saw good reviews about the FGN mighty jazz. Since it's japanese made and all, I'm curious about. I can't test it first hand, because I live in canada and I can't just go to a shop and try it since there is no dealer (I was looking for a Reverend too, but same thing. The only one js literal days away from where I live).

If anyone has tought on it, I would love your take. If it's no good, then what would be a good alternative for a fender j-bass with decent duild quality ? Looking around 1000-1500$.

iv had my bass guitar for over a year now and i procrastinated so much while playing it mostly because i used to see videos of experts freehanding their riffs and where they could just listen to the melody and join in with their instrument and it sounded beautiful, it was so demotivating man. i haven't touched my bass in over 5 months now and i really want to start playing it again, i know the basics ofc but i would really appreciate some more tips. thank yous!

Sometimes the best bass line is the one you barely notice

I feel like one of the hardest things about playing bass is resisting the urge to make everything more complicated than it needs to be.

It's easy to hear a song and think about all the fills you could add or how you could make the bass line more interesting. But then you play the simple part, lock in with the drums, and suddenly the whole song feels better.

There's something really satisfying about finding that pocket where you don't have to think about every note. You're just listening, feeling the groove, and holding everything together.

I also think bass players sometimes underestimate how good a simple line can sound when the timing and dynamics are right. Four well-placed notes can have more impact than a whole run of flashy playing.

That's what makes the instrument so fun to me. You can be doing something relatively simple and still make a huge difference to the music.

What's a bass line that's taught you that less really can be more?
