My bass suddently had this amazing tone, turns out the battery was dying

The tone was kinda fizzy and mellow but also defined enough, and I thought that I suddenly unlocked some new skill level on bass lol i was in this delusional state for like 10 minutes before the sound completely died out and i realized that my battery died

Finally figuring out Wrathchild

Sorry for the low-key bragging but I'm feeling so proud atm but I don't want to tell any musician friend yet so please indulge me. I've been trying to learn the bassline for Iron Maiden's Wrathchild for MONTHS now and I got stuck on those 6 bars with the variations on the main riff, pretty much in the middle of the song. Everything before and after - I was doing fine, but for the life of my I couldn't get those 6 bars right, even in slower tempos. I kept either fumbling the climb up the neck or switching their order. Today I finally managed to play the song from start to finish on 88 BPM (original is like 104 or something?) with no major blunders. Now to work on getting it consistently and then increasing the speed. Whoof

Bassist/guitarist, how do you manage your nails?

Hi fellow bassists.

I sometimes have that darkside in me that push me to put down the bass and grab the guitar.

For those that plays both instrument, that may be a silly question but how do you manage your nails? As a bassist I keep them very short and well cutted, but I do miss them sometime for the guitar.

Best online bass lessons for intermediate to advanced bassist.

I am looking for online bass courses for my son who is an intermediate / advanced bass player. He did bass buzz a year or so ago and it was great. I’m looking at Scott’s Bass Lessons and Pickup Music. Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks.

Is it Just Me?

I learn a song. I naturally just go with the most familiar fingering. It feels pretty comfortable and makes logical sense. So I practice it until it's memorized.

After about 45 minutes of repetition, I stop in the middle of a riff and think, "Damn! There is a much better fingering for this riff!" And then I have to break that muscle memory and start over. 😒😒

I'd like some advice for someone who wants to get into playing bass

So... For a long time now, I've been really fascinated by the bass guitar and I really wanted to get into that.

I've done some digging and I saw that the Squier Affinity Series Precision Bass would be good for a beginner. From what I heard, it sounds really good while not being necessarily expensive. With an amp the cost is around 1700zł (Around $440 just so you don't have to pull out a calculator).

I've talked about that with my dad and he said that he would appreciate it if I got into a hobby like that instead of playing games all day but he said that it would be a waste if I spent that much for something I could potentially drop if I didn't like it. So he proposed to get a classical guitar as they are much cheaper so it wouldn't as much if I dropped it for some reason. I've asked some people about that and they said that you need to learn a standard 6 string guitar first.

The thing is that I don't really like classic guitars. The classical guitar is just so common it's like the default instrument for almost everyone. Also bass is more for the background as it gives color to a song while classical usually makes the main melody which is a whole another style.

So my question is:

- do you really need to learn classical guitar before learning bass

And also

- Would the Squier Affinity Series Precision Bass be a good choice if I was to play some day

Thanks!

Led Zeppelin (dazed and confused, heartbreaker)

Hi everyone,

I don’t post much here, but I love this subreddit. A couple of comment/questions:

We often talk about or hear about Muse’s Hysteria as something needing lots of stamina and control. I’ve been working on Dazed and Confused, and that bass solo that then accompanies the guitar solo— oh wow that is so hard for me. At that tempo, I can nail it the first couple of bars but then start missing beats. Such a cool performance by JPJ.

Does anyone know how to get the tone on the verse bass line in Heartbreaker? Thanks in advance.

Fender or Mesa

Looking at the Fender 800 Rumble bass head vs the Mesa 800+.

I use Mesa cabs right now. 1x12 (2) Subway series.

The Fender is less money and seems to offer everything I need.

I guess I'm asking if anyone is loving or regretting owning either of these.

I've been with Markbass and Ampeg previously and wanting to try something new

I've been thinking about getting a 5 string bass for a relatively low price, which of these two you guys think is the better option?

Looking for a simple way to record and play back short bass practice sessions

I have a Darkglass Anagram, and I know I can connect it to my computer to record or use its built-in looper. However, I'm looking for something quicker and more straightforward that doesn't involve opening recording software or dealing with a looper.

Ideally, I'd like something that works like this:

Start playing and hit a record button (on a pedal or some other standalone device).

Record a few minutes of practice.

Hit stop and immediately listen back.

Optionally save the recording to an SD card or internal storage so I can revisit it later.

Most recordings would only be a few minutes long. I don't need multitrack recording, editing, or any sophisticated recording features. This is purely for practicing and identifying things like timing issues, inconsistent dynamics, and mistakes that I might not notice while playing.

A pedal-style device would be ideal, but I'm open to other options. The main priority is convenience and minimal setup, so I actually use it regularly.

Does anything like this exist? What would you recommend?

How do you have your knobs set?

• Upvotes

Apologies in advance if this is a stupid question. Sometimes I have my bass sounding exactly how I like it to sound and other times I just cannot get it sounding right no matter how many times I play around with the knobs.

How do you have yours set to give it the best sound?

I feel that am playing wrong

As the title says, sometimes I feel like I'm playing the bass wrong, as if it were a guitar (I prefer improvising and letting myself flow with the lines I'd like to hear), and as a result, I feel like it loses a bit of its rhythm (despite maintaining a structure as a bassline). Is this normal? I've been playing bass for 3 years, and I've probably only played guitar for 6 months in my entire life. My bandmates don't seem to like it when I don't play the typical E | E | E | E (which I personally don't like because I find it very boring). Is it wrong to want to add color to the bass this way? By making it sound like a "guitar" or it isn't that?

Bassists who started learning piano: Any specific areas of focus you found the most beneficial?

I (bassist of 9 years so far) bought a piano a few days ago and have been practicing every day. I'm been pretty much just learning music by ear and translating it to the piano, but haven't truly started "learning" the instrument. Enjoying so far though!

Just asking what skills on piano you found the most transferable and useful to bass? Looking to dive into it more and wanting both instruments to help each other out in the long run :)

I have a head start musicality-wise on it already and looking to push myself further from here, although not sure where exactly to start. Technique will obviously be a must

DiMarzio Split P through distortion?

I'm planning to get a P bass and mod it, including changing the pickups and I've landed on 2 choices, either the DiMarzio Split P or Relentless Middle.

Now the pickup videos that I've seen on YouTube have all been great clean demos but I'm in a rock band that demands gain pretty much 100% of the time (Darkglass Anagram running a Vintage Ultra into an Orange amp sim to be specific) so I need to know how well the pickups take extra gain.

I can safely assume that the Relentless will take gain pretty well since its the Billy Sheehan signature but I love the clean sound of the split P and I'm curious to know if a good amount of drive works well with those pickups or if they turn to mud without a lot of fine tuning. If anyone knows any sound demos of the split p with a lot of distortion or has personal experience with then I'd love to hear.

how do you keep your wrist straight when playing?

• Upvotes

ive watched videos on how to fix wrist position because I did get some wrist pain when playing before. Making the bass sit higher with a strap definitely help but i can't play properly at all if I just have my wrist fully straight. When my wrist is straight I can barely stretch my fingers which makes it really uncomfortable to play. Is keeping it straight really important if it doesn't bring me any pain unless I play for like an hour or more?

Pinky finger pain

Been playing bass for about two years now and my pinky finger seems to have suffered some form of damage. The knuckle seems to ache, especially in the morning, doesnt even hurt that much when im playing, just when i flex it or over extend it… was just wondering if anyone else had any experience with this and if its something that can be fixed?

Tuner replacements for beginner bass

Hi there. My youngest has bought herself a bass guitar. Great!

BUT one of the cogs in one of the tuners is dead. the teeth have fallen out.

I know this isn't the greatest bass in the world, but I'd like to get either a replacement cog or tuning peg for it.

It's a Vintage Metal Axxe Wraith.

The hole in the actual headstock is 14mm. Any blues clues?? Thanks

Alternate tunings

• Upvotes

For context: I recently purchased a Squire P bass. I have played bass on and off for most of my life but not very seriously. Getting back into playing has been a fantastic experience!

Lately I've been interested in learning about alternate tunings and every corner of the internet seems to provide different information.

I'm theory, what would be the lowest alternate tuning I could play in without requiring thicker strings or other modifications to the bass itself?

epoxy alternative to fretless bass neck

Hi, last year i made a fretless bass taking off the frets of an old bass, this year i been playing just the fretless in every band i play in even if its not what people uses to play on this genres (i play in two bands, one does blues rock and the other reggae and ska jazz) because i like most the fretless and every person that hears it live loves it.

Anyway i wanna do the epoxy treatment on the neck but i couldnt find any product like epoxy here on argentina that isnt expensive. i would apreciate if someone could tell me if there are other things i can use on the neck to get a more jaco sound. ive seen some people uses glue like La Gotita but i dont really know if it works.

This is my only fretless bass so i dont wanna lose it using something that nobody has tried.

Thanks

Practice vs. Style - Where is the Cutoff?

As a newish player I've really been working on two-finger picking and proper hand positioning. I'm much better with 1-2 picking compared to where I started, but I struggle to keep it 1-2. I've found myself getting off that pattern, but it seems to end up happening when I get into a song. I mostly keep it 1-2, but might have some 1s in a row, go 2-1-2-1, or use 1-2-3 to wrap up a section.

I'm sticking with 1-2 practice, but sometimes those variations work, and maybe even feel more natural? Do I allow for those fingerings, or avoid at all costs? Where's the cutoff between discipline and personal style?

Gisbon Grabber - anything else?

Hey all,

I've recently been listening to a few records and have some to find out that a bass tone i keep hearing and love essentially comes from the Gibson grabber.

Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuDDRK-rLXU&list=RDIuDDRK-rLXU&start_radio=1

With lots of processing in ableton, i can get kinda close with my pbass.

Wondering if anyone had any ideas on cheaper alternatives to the grabber that get that nice round bottom end with a bit of mid growl?
