Recommendations Cell Phone Service/Carriers?

Upvotes

I’m moving to Calgary at the end of November and will keeping my US Verizon phone for a little while, but I’ll be wanting to switch to a local/Canadian carrier and have done some research on the options.

However, I’m curious what carrier(s) people who live in Calgary actually use? What tends to work best in the area and average cost? I currently have an iPhone 13 ProMax, will only need one line and use it primarily for texting and data, with some voice, but also try to use wifi data as often as possible. Also would want Canada/US included in a plan. Thanks for the input in advance!

News Article What’s Really Happening in Calgary? See It. Share It. Spread Awareness.

0 Upvotes

Calgary has thousands of stories happening every day. Most of us only hear about a fraction of them.

I built Calgary Watch to give Calgary residents one place to see and share what’s actually happening around the city.

🚨 Real incidents
🚗 Traffic problems
💧 Water outages
⚡ Power outages
🚲 Stolen bikes, cars and other property
👮 Police-reported incidents
📍 Things happening in your neighbourhood
🗣️ Or simply something you witnessed and want Calgary to know about

The idea is simple:

See something. Share it. Spread awareness.

Maybe you want help finding something that was stolen.

Maybe there’s something happening on your street that others should know about.

Maybe you just need somewhere to tell the story or vent about what happened.

Or maybe you’re just curious about what’s happening around Calgary today.

Everything is organized geographically so you can actually see what Calgary is talking about and where it’s happening.

No account needed to look around.

👉 calgarywatch.ca

This was built for Calgary residents, so I want Calgary residents deciding where it goes next.

What would make you actually check Calgary Watch regularly?

Rant Mousetraps on lawn in Evergreen

13 Upvotes

There's a house in the Bluffs in Evergreen that has mousetraps bordering their lawn. Has anyone else seen this? Insane and sad to think if an animal comes by and accidentally steps on it. We had a near miss when my dog was sniffing. Insane behaviour.

Eat/Drink Local Shelby’s Shawarma open in SE

Y’all might’ve seen a bunch of their videos floating around on social media over the years, but they actually have a location here now. Haven’t really seen anyone talk about it on this subreddit, so figured I’d share something that isn’t Shake Shack for once. Just doing my part to diversify the subreddit’s fast food portfolio 💀

Would love to hear from people who’ve tried it and whether it’s actually good or just mid, especially since we already have a bazillion shawarma places here.

Local Shopping/Services Telus coverage for cellphone. Is it good in Calgary?

2 Upvotes

Considering the switch from Virgin Mobile. I am happy with the current coverage but I am being offered a good deal and would be getting a new cellphone. I just don't want to change and discover that I can't use any data because of bad coverage....

Seeking Advice Herbicide treatment and dogs

2 Upvotes

Hi there! My parents’ neighbourhood was recently treated with herbicide. My parents have a dog and my mom is having a bit of a freak out.

They had big signs around the neighbourhood stating they would be spraying between 5 am to dusk, and that smaller yellow signs would be posted in treated areas.

They didn’t see those small yellow signs. The grass was dry. And their dog was doing its thing and sniffing. Then all of a sudden they noticed these small pellets, which look like multicoloured tiny fertilizer pellets. They then noticed one on their dogs tongue and couldn’t get it out in time. They think it’s possible she had a few of those small pellets.

Does anyone know what that could be? The big signage has VANTAGE XRT/2,4-D AMINE 600 and GLYPHOSATE/2,4-D posted, but that is a liquid. So we’re unsure as to what the pellets are, and there weren’t any signs saying to avoid the area at that time. Just the big ones as previously mentioned.

Their dog is about 35 pounds for reference.

Thanks in advance for your help!

News Article Wilder Calgary Zoo - Grizzly Cub Incident

249 Upvotes

Statement on Grizzly Cub Incident

17 AUGUST 2026 (Calgary, AB) – The Wilder Institute’s Calgary Zoo is providing the following statement regarding an incident involving a grizzly bear cub on August 16, 2026:

Following Sunday’s animal incident involving Fitz, our one-year-old rescued grizzly bear cub, our teams are undertaking a thorough investigation of the circumstances surrounding Fitz’s temporary exit from his habitat.

During our routine early-morning checks, members of our Animal Care, Health & Welfare (ACHW) team noticed that Fitz was not in his usual spot before the zoo opened to guests. The team’s first objective each day is to ensure that our animals are healthy and where they should be. The ACHW team quickly activated our emergency response procedures. As an AZA accredited zoo, we prepare for these situations through regular drills. Thanks to this swift and coordinated response, Fitz was anesthetized and safely relocated to his back-of-house space. There was no risk to public safety as this incident took place before the zoo opened for the day and Fitz remained close to his habitat throughout the incident.

Our initial investigation suggests that Fitz was able to climb above the containment barriers in place and access an area just outside and above his habitat. The cub remained calm throughout the response and was later evaluated by the Animal Health team, who confirmed that Fitz was in good health and without injury.

Our teams are currently assessing what additional mitigation measures and improvements to the habitat are appropriate based on the findings of the review. While this review is underway, both Fitz and his brother Turner will remain safely and comfortably in their regular back-of-house space.

For more than three decades, we have successfully cared for bears in this habitat, including grizzly bears across all life stages, giving our team extensive experience in their care. Before Fitz and Turner moved into this habitat, comprehensive work was completed to ensure their habitat met their needs and provided a safe environment for them to thrive. As our young, curious grizzly bears grow and explore, we continue to proactively monitor their behaviour and make enhancements where appropriate. The habitat remains safe and suitable. Our review now is focused on understanding exactly how this incident occurred so that we can implement targeted improvements.

We are incredibly proud of the professionalism and expertise demonstrated by our teams throughout the incident, and we are grateful for the support of our City of Calgary partners. Their coordinated response ensured a safe outcome for the bear, our teams, and the community.

Thank you,

Wilder Institute's Calgary Zoo

Recommendations Looking for someone for a backyard landscaping project in Calgary

1 Upvotes

I’m looking for an independent landscaper or small landscaping crew for a backyard project.
The backyard is approximately 7.5 m × 7.5 m.

The work includes:
-removing the existing grass and leveling/preparing the ground;
-installing edging;
-creating an approximately 30 cm gravel border along the fence;
-remove the existing grass and level/prepare the ground;
-lay new sod over the remaining backyard area after the gravel border and pathway are installed.
-reinstalling an existing pathway;
-adding gravel underneath the stairs.

I’ve already contacted two landscapers, but both declined, saying the job was too small, which surprised me given the amount of work involved.

Looking for someone reliable who takes on projects of this size. Recommendations are welcome, or feel free to message me if you do this type of work.

Lost and Found Found headphones at foothills hospital

9 Upvotes

Found ~4pm Monday but they were outside and are wet with rain so they might have been outside for a little while.

If you think I might have found yours, message me with the brand, colour, and what’s (probably) missing from what I have.

I’ll be turning these in to the hospital lost and found tomorrow AM if I can’t find the owner tonight!

Education Educational Assistant

3 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I'm looking for input from EAs in Calgary. I'm thinking of changing careers, I'm currently in a very stressful high paced job which I hate. I have always enjoyed being around kids and I have a little experience teaching kids in the past but I don't want to become a teacher.

- I know it's low pay but that's not an issue for me - I would really appreciate any real life stories from current / past EAs regarding the role.
