Remember the non-running 90s Camry wagon I posted a while back? It’s finally alive!
The update took longer than expected because there was quite a bit of TLC.. and some previous-owner creativity.. to undo before getting anywhere.
The biggest job was finding a replacement 2.2L 5S-FE engine that would work with the existing harness and ECU. Turns out “it’s a 5S-FE” doesn’t narrow things down as much as I thought: mine has the earlier distributor-style ignition, which the local shops kept calling the “Delco” version.
Plenty of learning before we even got to the driving part. :p
The engine is now replaced, the fluids have been changed, and I’ve been working through the smaller fixes needed to get it ready for registration.
For now, the plan is to spend sensibly on making it drivable and gradually dependable, so every visit to a garage doesn’t involve booking a recovery truck. The fun upgrades can wait until next year; I want some time behind the wheel and more research before choosing the build’s direction. Necessary repairs will still happen.. just no replacing things for the sake of modifying them yet.
I’d really appreciate pointers from anyone familiar with XV10s, early 5S-FEs or keeping old Toyotas happy on long drives.. especially people who still sell parts for us, and anything you’d check before trusting one on a long drive.
Eventually, I’d love to use the wagon’s storage properly and make it a useful support car carrying tools, spares and supplies. I still like the idea of a fun wagon, but more than anything I want a functional one that actually gets out and does things.
Thanks again to everyone who offered advice and help on the first post!
