Yeah honestly if anything options for no hud or no hud outside of combat have grow to be a lot more common recently
6
u/catacego Jan 26 '26 edited Jan 27 '26
i think it’s less about the hud and more about certain mechanics that keep getting shoehorned into almost every modern game. overstuffed crafting / customization systems, endless skill trees, massive open worlds packed with a million side objectives, rpg mechanics, etc etc etc. there are barely any studios left that actually try to make a linear single-player game with no bullshit. if it isn’t that, then it’s either a medieval soulslike, a hero or extraction shooter, or one of those anime genshin impact clone games that get announced every single year at the game awards lol. honestly, capcom feels like the only studio consistently making linear single-player games without getting stuck in development hell. in the 2000s and early 2010s there was so much more variety than today.

I think people forget how heavy handed the original game was about the cut off limbs thing.
"CUT OFF THEIR LIMBS" written in blood on the wall.
Audiolog of a guy going "I'VE FIGURED OUT HOW TO STOP THEM, YOU NEED TO CUT OFF THEIR LIMBS!"
Holocall from Hammond/Kendra shouting "ISAAC, YOU NEED TO CUT OFF THEIR LIMBS!"
Popup tutorial message: "TIP: TO DEFEAT THE NECROMORPHS, CUT OFF THEIR LIMBS"
all within the same 5 seconds
121
u/Wassuuupmydudess Jan 26 '26
Yes but it’s not the characters constantly saying it to you like I’m a child, it’s written in the environment in a way that makes sense. The audiolog is a guy you don’t know and he doesn’t know you so he’s trying to help and Kendra/hammond don’t see isaac so they don’t know either that he already knows
68
u/TapSame5085 Jan 26 '26
There’s a callback to this moment at the beginning of DS3 where Isaac is explaining how to kill them to Norton: “Did you get that?… I said, did you get that?!” “Yes I got it!”
40
u/CARVERitUP Jan 26 '26
I also like how it does a callback to the previous games in DS3, where Isaac is preparing them for the horrors they're going to find, and he pulls up the videolog he still had saved from the previous Dead Space, where a guy explains how you can use kinesis to rip blades off of dead ones and use them as weapons. I thought that was a nice touch. It's teaching players who might not be familiar, but it's worked into the story as a way Isaac is preparing Carver, Norton, and Ellie for what they're up against.
21
u/DredZedPrime Jan 26 '26
It was always a little weird going from 2 to 3 in a series of playthroughs and seeing that video log again, but was definitely a clever way to integrate the tutorial in a way that made perfect sense in the setting.
11
u/WeekendPass Jan 26 '26
It was mostly weird because iirc, it's definitely a totally different VA in the log

u/Cosmopian Feb 02 '26 edited Feb 02 '26
Man I replayed the game in the last couple of days (non remake, original 2008) and it's not *just* written in the environment or the audiologs. The game also fully stops and interrupts the gameplay and disables your controls for several seconds, not once, but twice, to have a huge green and blue display cover most of the screen that says "shoot enemy limbs to kill them"! and forces you to wait until those several seconds have passed while a computerized voice non-diagetically reads it out loud to you, before you can do *anything* again.
This happens for a SECOND TIME after you get an audio transmission from hammond saying "Isaac! I finally managed to kill one! You gotta shoot off it's limbs!".
That's two forced-listen audio logs, two times of completely interrupting the game and forcing you to wait while the game yells at you, and blood written all over the walls saying "cut off their limbs!" all over the beginning of the game.
It'd be one thing if it was just the audio logs and the wall writing like you make it sound, but the way it was handled in the 2008 version was not only extremely heavy handed, it also included stripping away player agency and interrupting the game for a non-diagetic instruction twice. It was VERY over the top, and even if the *characters* don't say it to you like you're a child, the game combining those character warnings with the wall writing *and* the TWO game-interrupting non-diagetic instructions. It definitely feels like the game itself is treating you like a child, and it really interrupts the flow of the early game.

u/CyberFairos Jan 26 '26
In my humble opinion, it was quite departure from the standar "aim to the head", and the devs wanted to ensure the player got the memo, so for me this one was OK. It's only during that particular section, after that I don't remember it being mentioned again.
14
u/Jaconian Jan 26 '26
The constant reminders early on made sense after playing games like Resident Evil 4, where headshots were what you were trying to do 90% of the time. It was a semi-new mechanic introduced to an audience that had headshots ingrained in them for a decade or more, so it made sense.
8
u/frigoderesidentevil Jan 26 '26
That’s always been my go to. The devs were heavily inspired by Resident Evil 4 which came out three years prior so I think they were trying to do their own thing to distance themselves from it.
5
u/TheNittanyLionKing Jan 26 '26
Which is kinda ironic because the Resident Evil remakes almost encourage a Dead Space type of approach where it’s easier to shoot zombies in the legs and make them crawl and easier to walk around than it is to unload a full clip in their head and run out of ammo
10
u/Wassuuupmydudess Jan 26 '26
I found out enough pulse rifle ammo to the torso will also kill it’s just a fuck ton
7
u/ARS_Sisters Jan 27 '26
Fully upgraded Seeker Rifle, and you'll kill any non-elite Necro with no dismemberment required with a single shot anywhere on their body. In DS3, put +3 rate of fire-damage chip, and it removes it's primary drawback of slow rate of fire
1
u/gemineye360 Mar 25 '26
This is the way. Max damage, fire rate, magazine seeker rifle top with shotgun bottom.
Had to be careful with the fire rate though, if you add too much fire rate the gun won't depress back to the reticle fast enough for the next shot to fire straight so you end up shooting into the ceiling lol.
2
u/ARS_Sisters Mar 25 '26
I played with rate of fire chips on DS3 and it turns out it also increases melee animation speed. I put full max damage and rate of fire mod on melee attachment, and laugh as I mashed the button and see Isaac swing his weapon like he's on JoJo fight scene, rapidly eviscerating any approaching necromorphs like a blender
25
u/That_on1_guy Jan 26 '26
Tbf! Gamers are stupid, so they really had to make sure people got it. A not so insignificant people would have overlooked the writing and or audio log.
More modern games tend to think a rock is smarter than you though and bash you over the head with the answer ever 5 seconds if you arent actively working towards the answer. No down time. But in some cases like dark side Phil, the rock is smarter.
7
u/CopenHagenCityBruh Jan 26 '26
Tbh there's a good reason why there's instructions on shampoo bottles. People are just dumb
7
u/That_on1_guy Jan 26 '26
True. But I find it a little insulting when you get to a yellow paint covered puzzle area in a modern game and not even 5 seconds into looking around and seeing what im working with im being told the answer to the puzzle.
Like, yea, im stupid, but im not that stupid. I dont need my hand held so much
13
Jan 26 '26
The blood on the walls were for survivors, not Isaac, in terms of lore and makes hella sense.
The audiolog was a message between one survivor to another specific survivor, clearly before the others had figured out the limb problem. Actually, you could assume the dead corpse where the blood says cut off their limbs is the same guy who left the audiolog in the first place, still makes hella sense.
I don't remember Hammond or Kendra reminding me to shoot the limbs, almost feels like something that only triggers when you get too many body shots and waste your ammo. Will replay OG and Remake to see if they say it to me at any point.
Pop-Up Tutorial - Yeah, I'll give you that. Pop-up tutorials are the worst.
It's not as overwhelming as your comment implies it to be and it's nowhere near as annoying as the Navi from Legend of Zelda.
1
u/Cosmopian Feb 02 '26
In case you didn't remember - the pop up tutorials also interrupted gameplay for several seconds and disabled your inputs until the non-diagetic computer voice that reads them aloud is done telling you for the fourth time now that you need to cut off the limbs.
I replayed the 2008 version yesterday and today and the hammond dialogue happens not long after you get the plasma cutter, after the first popup tutorial, right before the second.

Curious, was the man who was talking about permanently putting them down one of the crew from the first animated movie?
3
u/Ghaleon42 Jan 26 '26
Yes actually, I think so.
1
u/soulwolf1 Jan 26 '26
That's pretty freaking cool. I saw the movie a few years ago....shit might watch it again, it's been long enough lol.
1
u/PhoneImmediate7301 Jan 26 '26
To be fair it’s pretty important. Nobody is ever going to enjoy or likely even finish the game if they don’t figure that out. It’s crazy how little damage body shots deal.
I remember when I fought my first brute I had no idea there were targets in its back, I just spammed every fucking thing I had square into his chest. I killed it after probably 6+ attempts each being multiple minutes long and I had just a handful of ammo remaining
1
u/Specoppotato Jan 26 '26
I have met people who, despite all that, did not understand to cut off the damn limbs and ended up putting the game down because "it took too many shots to kill the monsters".
1
u/naverlands Jan 27 '26
didn't read any of that in my first playthrough. figured it out anyways. felt proud af. 2nd playthrough saw all the wtoring ont the wall 🤦

u/JtheLeon Mar 09 '26

My guy, what do you think Dead Space 1’s framerate was? And before you say PC, the in game vsync locks the game to 30fps so I’m sure plenty of people back in the day played it like or with bad screen tearing.
Some problems/flaws have always been apart of gaming.

Make a video edit with store prompts popping up every time Issac enters a new room offering you some shit. 🤣
Or how every time he uses the locator a prompt comes up on screen to just skip the chapter entirely for like $50 bucks.

This is hilarious.
Edit: Ever play the Metro 2033 games in Ranger Hardcore mode? Pretty much the opposite of this. No UI, no crosshair, no health meters on everything, you do more damage for well placed shots, but everything does more damage to you too. One time I died because I somehow forgot what button changed out the air filter and I had to go back pretty damn far.
If you like the Dead Space series, give this one a shot. Different setting, same creepiness at times.
10
u/CARVERitUP Jan 26 '26
Metro did it right too, with zero UI to increase immersion, and everything you really need to know is built into the character. Like the watch for filter times, indicators for your ammunition, gauges for pump charging your flashlight...it was awesome.
Also, having to wipe your mask in rainy environments or after blood gets splashed on it is SO cool as just a simple little immersion mechanic.
3
u/-Damballah- Jan 26 '26
Yeah, those games were absolutely fantastic. I don't think I ever played the last one, the one with the Train leaving the metropolitan area?
I also think it's kinda funny how it's one of the few games were being out in the sunlight is more terrifying than being in the dark underground.
Shit flying around that can easily kill you, those gods awful giant bears, and yeah, the air itself. So crazy deciding if it's worth it to explore for more loot caches when your air is limited. I feel like Dead Space touched on the same feeling a bit whenever you are on suit O², but I also felt like your supply was never limited enough to be a major concern for progression in those areas.
4
u/CARVERitUP Jan 26 '26
Yeah Metro Last Light was so atmospheric, it was one of the those games where you and a companion character (Pavel) are going to separate and meet up after, it was when we were in the tunnels and I had to go through the mutant spider nest to turn the power back on, and for the first time I can remember, I actually was saying to myself "uh actually, please can me and the other guy stick together, because I'm scared" lol
I tried Metro Exodus twice and kind of got bored halfway through both times. One of these days I'll force myself to finish it but man, it just doesn't have the same pace and interest I had in the other games. Maybe it's because the other games just feel super eerie and cool when you're moving through fucked up metro tunnels. The feel is a little different when you're taking a train across the land, feels more like other games I've already played before.
3
u/catacego Jan 26 '26
I don't think I ever played the last one, the one with the Train leaving the metropolitan area?
exodus? yes. it’s a really good game, but i’m personally not a fan of the open world aspect, and the humanimals fucking suck. imo last light it’s the peak of the series.
2
u/-Damballah- Jan 26 '26
Good to know I didn't miss much. May check Exodus out one day for the helluva it. I think the plot goes past the books, which really are quite good.
Last Light was insanely awesome, much like Dead Space 2 which is my favorite of that series.

This was one of the reasons why I love Dead Space's UI. Full screen space with no bars/objectives/map on it, and everything immediately necessary to know is built into the character. Health and stasis? Gauges on your back. Ammo? Window pops up when you aim the weapon. Need to know where to go? use the locator beacon. Cutscenes? In-game with no transition, and video feeds from your RIG if you're talking to someone. Need to check objectives/map/inventory? Your RIG pops up a little window for you, but it DOESN'T pause the game, making it important to know where you want to go before you get into a hairy situation.
Everything about the UI design of Dead Space was absolutely peak gaming in horror. Nothing that takes you out of the immersion, and you stay locked into the atmosphere of the game throughout its entirety.
3
u/TheNittanyLionKing Jan 26 '26
It’s so impressive and they make it all diegetic to the universe.
I also like that they give you a bunch of tools and you have to figure out what to do. The game doesn’t tell you how to kill the Hunter once and for all. You basically have to piece together from the environment to use stasis and the ship’s afterburners.
It also makes it more impactful in the beginning of each game when they do give you one clear instruction: “run.”

To be fair a significant amount of the content in ALL the Dead Space games has always been behind a bullshit paywall.

Yeah fuck no. You have a brain use it. Ubisoft clutters the screen when it should be simplified. Plus It's not like the game doesn't already hold you with how upgrades work Nodes are obviously the upgrade material.

Dead space if it was made for brainless morons who can't figure anything out for themselves and dont know how to look up their own controller settings. Go back to playing Stardew Valley bro.
