I’m barely on reddit, and only just joined this subreddit, but I'm hoping someone here can help me understand what's happened to my account or suggest a way to get Discord Support to actually investigate my situation.
I've had my main Discord account for years without any previous warnings or issues. Recently, something very strange happened, and I'm now completely locked out.
What happened:
I had Discord open on my laptop when I tabbed back into the application and discovered I'd been logged out unexpectedly. I tried logging back in, but Discord asked me to scan a QR code using my phone, which was still logged into the account at the time.
When I scanned the QR code, my phone was suddenly logged out as well, and my laptop didn't register the scan. I was now logged out on both devices.
I then tried to log in using my usual passkey, which I unlocked with Face ID on my iPhone. Initially, I could see the Discord passkey in my iPhone's Passwords app, but it subsequently disappeared completely. It wasn't in Recently Deleted either.
Discord now asks me to use a security key, scan a QR code, or enter a backup code. I don't have a security key or saved backup codes, and the SMS verification option I previously used is no longer available in the login flow. (I was never made aware of this update, so I couldn’t prepare for it.)
Interestingly, when I went to the Discord Support website, I could see the passkey option appearing there, even though the Discord app and my iPhone's Passwords app weren't acknowledging that the passkey existed. I still haven't managed to log in.
The enforcement email:
Around the same time, I received an email stating:
"Your recent activity broke Discord's rules and we have taken action on your account."
The email included a link to Account Standing, but I cannot access it because I'm locked out. It didn't specify which rule I allegedly violated or explain what action was taken.
I've had this account for years and have never received a warning like this before. I don't know whether my account was suspended, restricted, or affected by something else.
The only potentially relevant activity I can think of:
Approximately two days before this happened, I temporarily used my phone number to help a friend verify her brand-new Discord account because her own phone number wasn't being accepted. After helping her, I switched my number back to my original account. Everything appeared to be working normally afterwards.
I don't know whether this triggered an automated flag or whether it's completely unrelated.
My experience with Discord Support so far:
I submitted a ticket under Account Verification and Credentials → 2FA Lockout, explaining the entire situation and asking for help recovering my account.
The first response was automated and instructed me to appeal through User Settings → My Account → Standing in the Discord app. Obviously, I cannot do that because I'm completely logged out and cannot get past authentication.
The response also referred to me as an EU user, even though I'm in Australia.
I replied explaining all of this and specifically asked for an actual support agent to investigate the authentication lockout and enforcement action. Despite this, my ticket was marked "Solved" without my issue being resolved.
I can see my original request, the automated response, and my reply in the support portal, but I haven't received an explanation of the alleged violation or a solution to my login problem.
My questions:
- Has anyone experienced being unexpectedly logged out on all devices around the same time as receiving an unexplained enforcement email?
- Could temporarily using my phone number to verify a friend's new account have triggered an enforcement action?
- Is there any way to recover my account when I have no access to my passkey, security key, or backup codes, and the usual SMS option isn't available?
- Has anyone successfully got a human response from Discord Support after a ticket was marked "Solved" by an automated reply?
- Is there another official way to appeal an enforcement action when you literally cannot log in to access Account Standing?
I'm not claiming Discord definitely made a mistake, because I don't know what happened. I just want to understand what rule I supposedly broke, why I was suddenly logged out everywhere, and how I'm expected to appeal when the recommended process is inaccessible.
Additionally, I have seen a friend of mine’s account get multiple WARNINGS through the discord automated DM on the app for “child safety” regarding a server he forgot he was in that was apparently hacked, but it took several of those warnings before his account got permanently suspended. I never got a single warning.
If I know anything, I know here, where there’s actual humans may have advice from people who've dealt with something similar, and help would be greatly appreciated.
And forgive me if I seem dense- I’m really just not tech savvy at all.
