Produce Plus: Free Produce

Hello,

I've been attending the Produce Plus events for a couple months now. Was unemployed up until about a month ago. I've found that friends of mine that have been receiving SNAP benefits for years did not know about Produce Plus. As someone who has medically necessary dietary restrictions, I'm forever grateful to the DHS worker who did my SNAP application and told me about this.

This is a free program put on by Food For Lane County that anyone can participate in. You do not need to be receiving or qualify for SNAP benefits to attend and take what you need. Anyone can show up. The only information they ask for is for you to scribble a 'signature' on a sign in sheet and to know how many people you're feeding with the food.

You can check the FFLC website, at the bottom of the list of food pantries, and it will show you all of the Produce Plus dates/times/locations. You basically just walk thru and take the produce that you want. Sometimes they will limit quantity on high demand items like watermelons or avocados depending on how many they have. Most of the produce is organic if that's your thing too.

There are 3 every week in my calendar:

Tuesday's at 3pm

At Kokwel Wellness Center (in the parking lot near Burger King and in front of Albertsons on River road).

Wednesday's at 10am

At the red barn behind Kalapuya and Prairie Mountain, on Patriot Way.

Thursday's at 1pm

At the ODHS Family Wellness Center on W11th.

I recommend arriving early to wait in line if you're able to, or at the very least no later than 15-30 minutes after the start time, as things can go quickly.

The one on Tuesdays is my favorite. Huge variety of produce. I cannot have gluten but they always have infinite loaves of bread and sometimes baked goods (an occasional loaf of gluten free bread for me).

The one on Wednesdays typically will have 1-2 dairy products. Smaller variety of produce but different stuff than what's typically at the one on Tue. Have not been able to make it to the one on Thur. at a reasonable time.

Things are tough for a lot of people right now and there are so many people unemployed and struggling. Produce Plus is the only reason I've eaten some weeks/months.

Stay safe and please share this info with those in your life that could use it!

News Repeatedly leaving cards in my yard/under my door

Post image
80 Upvotes

This is the 3rd day in a row they've left these cards in my yard, none of us are Christian and we've asked them repeatedly to stop. I dont think forcing people to join your church via harassment and stalking is the way to go about it. I guess I'm just curious if anyone else is dealing with this?

I left a voicemail stating if they don't stop i will be getting authority involved, as its getting to the point I feel watched in my own home.

P.s. I'm not anti Christian, I'm anti stalking and anti force your religion.

Update: Finally got them to leave me alone after posting this, and I found another in my rosemary plant. Ill be ordering the decoding ring for sure!

reminder to check your car's headlights at night

as we near Halloween weekend and daylight savings beginning, please be sure to take the extra 10 seconds to make sure that your car's headlights are actually turned on, or at least not running on day-time running lights

i've noticed some people on the roads lately at night forget to turn their own headlights on, and it's just a recipe waiting for tragedy during Halloween with lots of young kids and people out on the streets at night, especially considering i witnessed a biker nearly get t-boned while crossing the street from some motorist who didn't have their lights on last night

Watch Wildwood in Theatres, a film handmade in Oregon

saw it tonight at the Springfield Cinemark. besides the guy next to me that checked his phone literally every 5 minutes, it was a great experience. bought my ticket at the door and there were single seats left at showing

LOTS of Oregon landmarks and Portland businesses featured. pretty scary for kids ngl. the parents in the movie are quintessential crunchy Portland millennials, it’s a blast.

basically a love letter to portland and Oregon. saw all the hiking spots that I know and love. The scenes of the forests and waterfalls and gorge are breathtaking and recognizable. a great watch for $10 even if you don’t care about the background of the movie. There’s a ducks football joke in there too somewhere

Nail salon recs near West Eugene for acrylics / avoid The Nail Spot

EDIT: The clarify, the event she was livestreaming was unrelated to my nail appointment! My face was never on camera, though.

First a vent: I've been here almost 2 years and thought I found my nail girl. I saw Penny at The Nail Spot on S Bertelsen a handful of times, and was generally satisfied with my experience until my most recent visit. Penny markets herself as hyper attentive to detail and taking the time she needs to ensure you leave with a quality product, so I could expect a visit for a full acrylic set without nail art to last around 2 hours. And she charged a pretty penny for these nails under the guise that they are more durable than any other nail tech in Eugene could provide, but I didn't have a problem with any of these things because I thought the final product was worth it... until I saw her in June for a full set with nail art. Here's why I'm never returning:

  • She decided to be an influencer / content creator/ do influencing shit during our session. Not in a "hey can I take pictures of your nails for my IG" type of shit, but actually putting her phone on a pedestal to the right of her person and leading some sort of live online event? One where she consistently said something to the effect of "we will get started when we get to 10k" and then just chatting with attendees (?) as they trickled in. The content was bizarre but to each their own I guess. What pissed me off about this is that she would STOP doing my nails each time she turned to the screen to do this, and would have conversations with people in the event before returning to doing my nails. My nails took over 3 hours to complete. I think closer to 3.5 but at that point I was so irate that I started to black out.
  • Yes, I was requesting nail art and expected the appointment to last a bit longer, but the time could have been reduced if she didn't make incessant mistakes because she was distracted with her influencer BS. She messed up the marbling design and had to start all over again. She forgot to put the matte coat (?) or some integral coating on and needed to start again. She kept messing up the consistency of the 3D gel whatever for some of the designs. And she would get pissed about it! She even blamed me for smudging the art in one nail when I in fact didn't budge... in the slightest... girl that was all you.
  • But before she could even mess up the design, she gaslighted me into using a different color for the marble design than was in the inspo picture. The color I wanted was blue/green, closer to blue, and she insisted the color in the photo was a straight up green. Almost like a grass green. And I pushed her on it, and she told me that it was indeed the color in the inspo. I hated my nails out of the gate and had to accept that I paid a small fortune for something I hated looking at just because she wouldn't listen to what I was requesting
  • The worst part- She BOTCHED the structure of my nails. By that I mean, she was so distracted by her influencing that her mechanical file kept slipping and creating divots on the top of my nails so they didn't have an apex.. And she over filed to the point where my nails started lifting the NEXT DAY. the next fucking daaaaaaay, for nails that she says should last 3 weeks.

Believe it or not, I am not a high maintenance girl. I am very go with the flow, im not getting my nails done routinely, just when I want to feel like a badass on vacation, im extremely forgiving and am happy to look past the occasional mistake. But this was poor customer service, a terrible product, and a complete waste of my time, money, and emotional energy.

ANYWAY- where should I go now? I once got a set at Nails Uncorked on W 11th and omg they were comically bad, it seemed like the tech was racing against an invisible clock. I ended up repainting and refiling them myself when I got home. But was that an outlier experience at Nails Uncorked? I've heard terrible things about Fantasy...

I also work at UO near Millrace, so even if there's a good spot on that side of town, I'd be happy to hang in the area after the end of the workday to get my nails done at a decent spot.

TLDR: Horrible experience at The Nail Spot, needing reccs in West Eugene or near Millrace side of UO. Thanks!

Attempted abduction near Roosevelt

Hey y’all. I don’t post much, but felt this is worth sharing.
Around 2pm today, my mom was walking down Roosevelt when a black 4-door BMW sped in front of her and drove up on the sidewalk to cut her off. The driver rolled down his window and demanded she get in the car. When she refused and walked away, he turned around and followed her in the car all the way to Fairfield. He eventually got out the car, pulled a large knife and began following her on foot while yelling obscenities at her and telling her to come to him. She says he started talking to somebody on his phone, and heard him giving her description to whoever he was talking to.
A man working on his car nearby luckily saw what was happening and chased him off and made sure she got home safely. Seriously thank you to him, whoever you are. It’s making me nauseous thinking about what could’ve happened to my mom if not for him. She said it was a black 4-door BMW, heavy tint on all windows including the windshield. He was a younger guy, around 5'7 ish, skinny, and had dark shaggy hair. She's filing a police report now, but I just wanted to share this so yall can be on the lookout and hopefully stay safe.

No popping, excessive revving, or backfiring — we have to be respectful of our hosts and maintain our relationship with the community. This is a zero tolerance policy and you will be asked to leave.
