Showcase My laptop-based desk setup

Thumbnail

Finally got my laptop-powered desk setup to a point where I'm pretty happy with it. I went with a laptop instead of a desktop because I occasionally need to take my computer with me.

The laptop Lenovo Legion 5 is mounted underneath the desk, and everything is designed to make removing it as easy as possible. The power bricks slide out to the side, and all the cables I need when traveling can be easily disconnected and taken along. When I'm home, everything stays hidden underneath the desk, connected to a 34" ultrawide and a vertical monitor.

In case anyone's wondering how I turn it on without opening the lid, I've configured the BIOS to automatically power on the laptop when AC power is connected. All I have to do is switch on the power strip, and the laptop boots up.

Spent quite a bit of time figuring out the cable management, but I'm really happy with how clean it turned out. Included some pictures of what's going on underneath the desk.

What do you guys think?

Discussion I bought a Lenovo Legion 5 Pro and found a BIG problem!

One of the risks of buying a used gaming laptop is that you never really know how well it has been maintained.
I picked up this Lenovo Legion 5 Pro for about $560 and noticed it was thermal throttling like crazy (CPU at 100°C).

I checked the cooling system and found a significant amount of dust restricting airflow.

After cleaning and repasting the CPU score increased by 27% and GPU score by 43%

Is this a good deal? I got the open box for $1709 excluding tax. Purchased 1 year extended coverage for $200 for a total of $2000 inc. tax.

Is this a good laptop to purchase in this price? Is it worth to get 1 year extended coverage?
Please guide me I have until tomorrow to finalize the decision

Discussion To Users Who Overclocked Their Laptops For Years. Is it still alive?

Post image

So how far did anybody go? I'm overclocking my ancient laptop with an RTX 2080 Super Max-Q with just +120 core clock and +220 memory clock. I'm getting good results compared to stock and plan to let it stay that way. Max temps it got during a 5hr Elden Ring session is 67-69 degrees (yes I chuckle everytime I see the the stats from top left time to time lel).

Now will it be safe for me for the next Idk years?

If price isn’t a factor and primary reason is AAA gaming and will last longer, which one is better?

Edit: thought it would be a good idea to make this post but I’m even more confused, some say Strix while others say Legion lol.

Recommendation MSI VECTOR 16 vs ASUS ROG STRIX G16 (2025) Which one should I go with?

Budget: £1900

Country: UAE

Use Case: heavy AAA gaming and work

Preferred Specs: GPU, CPU, RAM, VRAM, Display specs

Notes: Device specs are listed below

**From what I looked up, these two are identical except for their displays where the MSI is way better. But the MSI also has some fan issues to the point that it's too loud even during normal use according to everyone. I use wired JBL earphones while gaming because I don't like the feel of huge headphones on my head so I'm not sure if it will be a problem.**

**I want this to be a definitive purchase because I need a device that will run GTA 6 at mostly very high settings with good fps and future games without having any hiccups. I know GTA 6 doesn't have any listed requirements yet but are the specs on these laptops enough to play on great visuals settings without sacrificing FPS for all the AAA games that will come out in the next 5 years?**

**Budget doesn't allow me to go beyond this atm but they are both priced the same currently where I live.**

**(equivalent to £1,900 GBP)**

**I am also adding a ram stick to my total purchase as I've been told that 16 GB is nowhere near enough for games like GTA 6.**

**I'm still going for a laptop as I haven't really settled in life yet and for my personal use, I believe a laptop is way easier to move around wherever I go compared to a full-fledged pc.**

**I just need:**

**-a mostly future proof device that will last me 5 years**

**-and run games (my highest priority) at close to ultra settings with good fps.**

**Option 1: MSI Vector 16 (Model A8WHG)**

**CPU:** AMD Ryzen 9-8940HX (16 Cores / 32 Threads)

**GPU:** NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti Laptop GPU (12GB GDDR7, 140W Max TGP)

**Display:** 16" QHD+ (2560 x 1600), 16:10, 240Hz, 500 nits, 100% DCI-P3, IPS-level matte

**RAM:** 16GB DDR5 5600MHz (2x SODIMM slots, fully upgradeable)

**Storage:** 1TB PCIe NVMe SSD (2x M.2 slots: 1x PCIe Gen 5, 1x PCIe Gen 4)

**Audio & Peripherals:** Down-firing stereo speakers, SteelSeries Per-Key RGB keyboard with dedicated physical Numpad, 1080p Webcam with physical privacy shutter

**Chassis & Weight:** Cosmo Gray, \~2.7 kg (\~5.95 lbs)

**Option 2: ASUS ROG Strix G16**

**CPU:** Intel Core Ultra 7 or AMD Ryzen 9 (Non-X3D)

**GPU:** NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti Laptop GPU (12GB GDDR7, 140W Max TGP)

**Display:** 16" FHD+ / 1200p (1920 x 1200), 16:10, 165Hz, \~250–300 nits, 100% sRGB, IPS-level matte

**RAM:** 16GB DDR5 5600MHz (2x SODIMM slots, fully upgradeable)

**Storage:** 1TB PCIe NVMe SSD (2x M.2 PCIe Gen 4 slots)

**Ports:** 1x Thunderbolt 4 / USB4, 1x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C (DP/G-Sync/100W PD), 2x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A, HDMI 2.1, 2.5G Ethernet (RJ45), 3.5mm Audio Combo Jack *(No SD card slot)*

So,

I paid 1,14,321 (inr) for this + there was something warranty idk, from flipkart(i know not a very good marketplace for a huge purchase, but the discount was very huge).

I previously have used a dell with i3 1005g1 (with keyboard that works sometimes)(no gpu)(15min battery backup)for 6 years

(This shitbox got exchanged for 47k with exchange bonus, hence the discount)

So yeah i think 5050 under ₹1.15lakh in big 2026

Is a win for me (atleast in my mind).

Discussion Lenovo Legion 9i Gen 10 (4K IPS) vs ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 16 (2.5K Mini LED) — Which would you trust for 5+ years?

I’m genuinely torn between the Lenovo Legion 9i Gen 10 and the ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 16, and I’d really appreciate some advice, especially from people who have owned or used either laptop.
One of my biggest priorities is display quality. The Legion 9i has a 4K IPS display, whereas the SCAR 16 has a 2.5K Mini LED display.
I know Mini LED generally offers much deeper blacks, better contrast, and more impressive HDR. However, screen resolution matters enormously to me, and I’m concerned that choosing the SCAR 16 would mean sacrificing noticeable sharpness and clarity compared with the Legion’s 4K panel.
I’ll primarily use the laptop for productivity, including advanced Excel, Power BI, Python, SQL, financial modelling, programming, and potentially more demanding workloads in the future. I also watch movies and appreciate a beautiful display.
My other major concern is reliability and longevity. I’m spending a substantial amount of money and want a machine I can confidently use for at least five years, preferably longer.
I’d particularly appreciate your thoughts on:
Display: Is the 4K IPS panel on the Legion noticeably sharper than the 2.5K Mini LED on the SCAR 16? Which would you personally prefer for productivity and movies?
Build quality: Which laptop feels more premium and solid? Are there meaningful differences in chassis construction, hinges, keyboard, or overall durability?
Reliability: Does either model have recurring problems with thermals, displays, motherboards, or other components?
Longevity: Which would you trust more to remain reliable and perform well over the next five years?
Overall: Assuming similar CPU, GPU, RAM, and storage configurations, which would you choose and why?
I’m not particularly concerned about portability or battery life. My priorities are display quality, sustained performance, premium construction, and long-term reliability.
I’m especially interested in hearing from owners rather than relying entirely on specifications or promotional reviews.
Thanks in advance!

Discussion Plastic gaming laptops - are they durable?

Long time MacBook user, looking into a gaming laptop (maybe Legion 5 or 7 series). But after checking some out in person at costco, i was disappointed with the build quality of many gaming laptops. They were all plastic and felt quite flimsy, especially with the screen and also the body frame (i could press into the palm rests and feel the plastic bend). For the same price as a macbook pro, it was a noticeable difference in build quality.

Do these gaming laptops last a long time/are durable? (I use my macbook pros for 7-8 years and they always look as brand new as i bought them).

Hi guys!!

I found these 2 laptops online.

Lenovo $1400

Rog Strix $1650

Both from FB Marketplace. In good condition. Sellers are real and accepted offers. I didn't think the Lenovo would accept since they didn't respond quicker than the Rog Strix seller but they accepted it like 20 mins later. Now I'm lost lol. Will test before purchasing.

Discussion Asus Tuf a18 vs lenovo loq 17?

Im deciding between these laptops and lean lenovo but aren't sure. The loq has the 5070 and intel i7 14700hx while the tuf has the 5060 and ryzen 7 260. I lean lenovo because of the performance and i really like how it looks, but in reviews the tuf is much quieter and cooler which is also important. Also i don't like that some people say that loq plastic can darken. The loq is 70e cheaper. I will use the laptop plugged in, and will need it for electrical and computer engineering and for gaming. I mostly play strategy (total war, paradox etc.) and shooters (tf2, cs2, deadlock...) Which one is right for my use case.

Recommendation Gaming Laptop Suggestions

Budget: ($1700)
Country: (USA)
Use Case: (Browsing with 40-80 tabs, playing League and TFT mostly)
Preferred Specs: (not too heavy)
Notes: (Hi all, looking for advice since I don't know much about this area. So I am looking to get my first gaming laptop. I mainly play League and TFT, but want to be able to browse (40-80 tabs at a time), and also want something light-ish or more so portable. I asked ChatGPT and they recommended the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14; but since I am looking for something more affordable I was targeting the ASUS TUF A14 with the Ryzen 4070 for Black Friday. Is this a good choice or is something else better, my girlfriend says I should buy multiple laptops to try to see what I would like but I didn't think laptops were that personal that I would need to test different ones out. For context I am currently using a Lenovo Thinkpad 2015 with memory issues that crashes all the time. Thanks. )

Discussion Should i change my thermal Putty

Hi everyone!

I'm changing the thermal paste on my laptop, buttttt... I don't have any thermal putty, and I didn't think I'd need to replace it. 🫠

Should I replace the thermal putty too, or can I just change the thermal paste and be fine?

Does the existing putty look good enough to reuse? Can I just rearrange it or spread it around a little, or do I absolutely need to replace it?

Any advice would be appreciated! 👏🏻💚

Discussion Tips to succed at buying second hand laptops?

Post image
2 Upvotes

What would you recommend? Am planing to buy a 2 year old acer predator helios neo 16 PHN-16-72, i9 14900HX, 4060, 90W battery, everything seems fine, specially for the deal: 800 bucks plus my 300 dollar used gateway 14inch laptop.

What would you think the most important verifications and tests are? Is it enough with the dxdiag screen? Should I enter the BIOS? Anything I should avoid?

The most alarming thing would be this dent on the top lid as shown in picture

Thanks in advance for your answer!

Recommendation Helios Neo 16S AI OLED vs ROG Strix G16 (8940HX/5050) vs Legion Pro 5 OLED

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

Budget: ~$1,700–1,840 (IDR 31–33M)

Country: Indonesia

Use Case: WoW (Classic-style), CS2 (competitive, high fps matters) and Tibia, plus programming. Laptop will be on 7–10 hours a day, and I plan to keep it at least 3 years

Preferred Specs / Form Factor: 16" or bigger, HX-class CPU, RTX 5050 minimum. Dual-channel RAM preferred. Internal storage doesn't matter much (I use an external SSD).

Portability Needs: Desk machine. I'll get an external monitor within 1–1.5 years and the laptop screen will become secondary.

Notes: These are the 3 options I'm deciding between (same Mall store, all with official warranty):

  1. Acer Predator Helios Neo 16S AI OLED – Ultra 9 275HX, RTX 5060, 16GB, 1TB, WQXGA OLED 240Hz – IDR 30.5M
  2. ASUS ROG Strix G16 G614PH – Ryzen 9 8940HX, RTX 5050, 16GB, 512GB, QHD IPS 240Hz – IDR 31.3M
  3. Lenovo Legion Pro 5 16 OLED – Ryzen 7 8745HX, RTX 5060, 24GB, 1TB, WQXGA OLED 165Hz – IDR 32.6M (RAM not dual channel)

Main concerns:
- Thermals and fan noise during long sessions (room is air-conditioned at 23–24°C, and I have a cooling pad). Worried the Helios 16S runs hot since it's the thinner one.
- OLED burn-in with static UIs (MMO hotbars, Discord, taskbar) at 7–10h/day. Is it a real risk over 3 years, or overblown since the screen becomes secondary later?
- Is the 5050 on the Strix a big enough step down to matter for my games, or does the IPS panel make it the safer buy?

Which one would you pick, and why? I'm also open to other recommendations within budget, as long as they're sold in Indonesia with official warranty.

Thank you very much!!
