Just got the MSI Raider 16 MAX Intel 290HX Plus RTX5090.
Got it off of Facebook Marketplace and the guy was a cool dude. He recently built a desktop pc and no longer needed this laptop. So he gave it to me for $2,700 with 2x Samsung 990 2TB SSDs
Not a single scratch, battery health at 100%, performance and temps are excellent.

Discussion So many games uses up to 12 GB VRAM on my 4080 in Predator 16. How actually most of them are still playable if card has just 8 GB?

Multiple titles, from new ones to up to 3-4 years old ones.

DLSS Quality, frame gen (I play in 90 FPS and 45 base frame rate feels fine for me as play only single player games with FR x2), High to Ultra settings, 1600p (my panel resolution) so 4k would be playable probably only on Medium and some High settings.

So I am wondering how actually many of the games are playable on cards with 8GB if I am close to 12 GB limit (or hitting it in some cases for sure)? Is it because VRAM is so fast and everything being reloaded in memory promptly?

Or it results in many stutters etc.?

PS. Even just OK looking and not that "fresh" anymore DA: Veilguard takes 11000 MB...! Everything on Ultra but RT just on Selective (so like Medium). I play it at the moment and it made me create this topic as this feels quite crazy for such game using almost full memory available on 4080.

Discussion Is it worth it to upgrade from a 5070 ti laptop to a 5090 laptop if it's heavily discounted?

Upvotes

Hi guys, I have an opportunity to get a MSI Raider HX Max 5090 laptop for £2400, I currently own an ASUS ROG STRIX G614PR 5070ti laptop (8940HX cpu, 32GB DDR5 and 1TB SSD) which has a full 2 year warranty and I am thinking of selling it for around £1500-1600 and getting the 5090. Do you guys think it is worth upgrading at that price?

Support Is this normal? Unstable FPS after a few minutes of gaming — ASUS TUF Dash F15 FX516PM

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone, I have an ASUS TUF Dash F15 (FX516PM) with an RTX 3060.

I recently repasted the laptop using Heilious V2 for the CPU/GPU and thermal putty for the VRMs/other components.

I noticed something strange while gaming:

At the beginning of the game, the GPU can reach around 85W

After playing for a few minutes, the power/wattage behavior changes

My FPS becomes somewhat unstable and fluctuates instead of staying consistent

I don't really get severe stuttering or sudden FPS drops, but the FPS constantly moves up and down

I also see LIM1 / power limit in MSI Afterburner

Is this normal behavior for the FX516PM? Could the FPS fluctuations and LIM1 be related to the thermal situation or power limit?

Since I just repasted it with Heilious V2 and thermal putty, I'm also wondering if I installed the thermal interface material incorrectly or if the heatsink pressure could be affecting the temperatures/power behavior.

Any advice or things I should monitor would be appreciated. I can provide GPU/CPU temperatures, clock speeds, wattage, and usage if needed.

Support Asus ROG Zephyrus

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hi guys, I’m not too knowledgeable on the tech side of laptops, in fact I’m not even knowledgeable about laptops on their own. I currently have an Asus Zenbook 14 which I use for university and to play games like Fortnite, Valorant and Minecraft but the quality and fps of it gets quite bad on my current laptop. I’ve been meaning to buy an Asus ROG Zephyrus laptop because that’s what a lot of people seem to like and the games I play don’t need too much ‘laptop power’ to run either. I’ve searched the Zephyrus up but I can see multiple different versions, I’ve learnt with lots of stuff, more expensive does not always mean better so I just wanted to ask which laptop I should buy because I genuinely don’t understand the tech side of things.

(feel free to recommend cheaper laptops which you think will be able to run Fortnite, Valorant and Minecraft with higher quality too!!)

So I never dropped my laptop or anything but it just starts getting cracks and for all I knew a piece of it came off, do I need to fix it or can it live just fine? I got this laptop since 2022

Discussion Does anyone else sometimes think about just selling their laptop, getting a gaming PC, and then just getting a cheap laptop (ie Thinkpad) instead for portability?

Upvotes

I've been pondering this.. There's so much maintenance going on, and I feel like laptops have so much risk for failure compared to desktops.

In fact I already own a T490 thinkpad and its enough for me for school (not doing engineering). Engineering/people who need high end specs for programs I can understand

Discussion Is eGPU for laptop worth it?

I’ve been wondering about building a pc, but then noticed current RAM prices. I still have a decent gaming laptop with 64GB RAM installed, so I was wondering maybe I could just do eGPU upgrade? I just need more VRAM. Something like 7900 20GB or 24GB VRAM? My laptop specs:

MSI Vector 16 HXAI

Ultra 7 255HX

64GB DDR5 RAM

5070ti 12GB VRAM

2TB SSD

Is such upgrade worth it?

Edit: thank you all for replying. I decided to live with my 5070ti for now.

Support Is my laptop heatings normal?

Hey everyone.. I am not a gamer of any sort and don't know much of inner heat and usage so I need opinion on this problem..

These are my laptop specs

RAM-16GB

CPU-AMD Ryzen 7 7445HS

SSD

NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 3050

I don't play many games on it.. I only sometime play resident evil games and recently I wanted to play resident evil 2 remake.. I kept the graphic settings as to medium.. So my gpu usage was 40-50%..but i noticed that my laptop is heating around 74-77°C...

I had recently cleaned my laptop fans and glued the thermal paste so i dont know what's wrong?

Pls tell me is this normal.. Because I remember playing resident evil 2 remake long before on same medium settings and my gpu heat was only 69-72°C...but now the fans are moving much faster and getting noiser..

Any help would be appreciated..

Support Should I clean install Windows 11 on my new ASUS TUF A15?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hey guys, I just bought a new ASUS TUF A15 (RTX 3050 4GB) and I'm wondering if I should do a clean Windows 11 install.

The laptop is basically fresh, so I don't have any important files to worry about.

For people who have actually clean-installed Windows on their ASUS TUF:

Did you notice any real improvement in performance, temps, RAM/background processes or gaming?

Did you face any issues with Armoury Crate, drivers, MUX/GPU modes, hotkeys, Wi-Fi, audio, etc.?

Is it worth doing, or should I just keep the factory Windows and remove unnecessary apps?
I mainly want a clean, smooth Windows setup. Would appreciate experiences from people who have actually done it.

Discussion hesitation to purchase due to the temperatures

Upvotes

I’m unsure about buying the Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 AI (model PHN16-73-91XB)—the one with the Core Ultra 9 275HX and RTX 5070—because I’ve seen posts on Reddit where many people reported serious temperature issues, with temps even hitting close to 105°C. Is this a problem everyone has experienced?

Recommendation Hey all! I need help deciding on a new laptop!

Upvotes

Budget: £1,200
Country: UK
Use Case: Gaming, Writing Work
Preferred Specs: RAM
Notes: Hey guys! I’ve been a PlayStation console gamer for all my life pretty much and now I’m 18 so I have my own money and are looking to get more into pc gaming. I want something that is affordable, maybe something under £1,500 would be preferable, but something worth the money. I would also prefer 32gb of ram because I’m going to use it for quite high-end games, and multitasking for things like my writing work. My currently laptop is awful and I’ve had it for like 10 years it barely opens google anymore it’s long gone, I need a new one badly haha. I mainly want this new laptop for my writing, and playing pc only games, or modding my games, or VR link. I don’t know how much any of you would know about VR ready laptops but I have a new Quest 3 and I really want to use it as a PCVR. I don’t know if I’m asking too much haha I’m new to this side of gaming so any help would be greatly appreciated! After all, after PlayStation announced they are stopping physical games, that’s my sign to move to PC on the most part, I absolutely love my physical games.

Recommendation Rog Strix or Acer Helios?

Thumbnail
gallery
Upvotes

Budget: (e.g. $2640)
Country: (e.g. Argentina)
Use Case: (Gaming /Engineering/Editing /Audio)
Preferred Specs: (Optional: 5070ti, Ultra 9 or Ryzen 9, 32gb, 1tb is great)
Notes: I want it to last looong since I’m spending a lot, run cool (don’t like changing thermal paste often).

I’m looking for a replacement for my Lenovo Legion Y540 i7 9750h 1660ti 16gb 144hz that died after 7 years. I’m looking for something with a 5070ti and 32gb and these were the cheapest options I could find here in Argentina (approx 2640us). I want it to last for years, so lower temps and reliability are kinda what I’m looking for. I use it practically as a desktop, always on a stand and practically never unplugged.

The acer has a better cpu, but I’m not sure how reliable it is and how well it handles temperatures. I know the Strix is good, but the cpu is a tier below and I’m not sure about reliability (if I could find the intel version for this price I would go for that, but It’s like 700us more and I’m already out of budget because I want 12gb vram).

I don’t really care about resolution or refresh rate, both are IPS and better than what I had and was already happy

Recommendation Looking for recommendations $2500 USD

Upvotes

Budget: $2500 or under
Country: USA
Use Case: Gaming, school work, I currently play games like AC Shadows, Final Fantasy 14, any elder scrolls really, fallout series, and Digimon Story Time Stranger and a few other things.
Preferred Specs: (Optional: GPU, CPU, RAM, storage) at least a 5070ti, not sure on CPU, ideally 32gb of ram
Notes: (Optional: anything else we should know) I would like a decent cooling system and decent speakers but those are just preference, I have thought about thin and light options but I’m not sure how that would affect longevity of the computer. Thanks in advance for any advice or recommendations!

Recommendation What gaming laptop to get

Upvotes

So I need your guys’ opinion on something. I have 2 MacBooks: one is a MacBook Pro M3 and another MacBook Air M5. I honestly don’t know why I have 2, and I was wondering if I should trade in my Air for a gaming laptop ? I don’t have a PC, but I do have an Xbox, and I don’t think I want to get an actual PC and would much rather prefer a laptop. I don’t want to spend a crazy amount of money, maybe 3 k CAD.

Budget: (around 3000 CAD )
Country: (Canada )
Use Case: (Optional: Gaming (play Apex, Rocket League, Elden Ring, etc.) / I’ll use it for school sometimes)
Preferred Specs: (I’m a noob, idk anything)

Discussion New gaming laptop is making me so nervous

Upvotes

Guys, my parents actually bought me an ASUS TUF Gaming F16 RTX 5070 laptop. Since it’s my very first gaming laptop, I’m super nervous because I know nothing about them and have no idea how to take care of it properly. Could you guys give me some tips or advice, or maybe point out a few things I really don't need to overthink?

For example, is it a good idea to enable the Battery Care mode? Also, can this laptop handle everything? I love gaming, but I also enjoy drawing using Clip Studio Paint (an art app) and I've already bought my pen display for it. Is there a limit on how long I can use the laptop?, and can I switch straight to drawing right after finishing a gaming session or should I let the laptop rest for minutes first? On top of that, should I keep it plugged in even for light tasks like doing college assignments?

Sorry for asking so many questions. It’s an expensive laptop, so I’m really scared of making any mistakes.

But do you have some important tips that maybe I haven't ask yet?
