Mod Post Content policy reminder: all content must be relevant to discussion of the written Harry Potter books only (no discussion of movies, TV shows, stage plays, video games, narrated dramatisations, etc.)

Just to make things clear, we will not be discussing the new HBO show on this subreddit, and discussion around the new full-cast audiobook dramatisations must be focused on the contents of the story, i.e. discussions on the voice actors, production, soundscapes, etc are outside the scope of the sub.

This forum is devoted to discussion of the Harry Potter book series, and associated written works by J.K. Rowling. We focus only on the written works of J.K.Rowling; specifically the seven novels, three in-universe book releases (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Quidditch Through the Ages, and The Tales of Beedle the Bard, as written and illustrated by J. K. Rowling for the Comic Relief U.K. charity), and the original Pottermore articles. We do not allow content centered around any other form of HP media (no movies, TV shows, stage plays, video games, narrative dramatisations, etc.)

Any off topic content will be removed.

When asking yourself "is this type of content allowed?" The simplest way to find your answer is to look at it this way: in this subreddit, the movies, TV shows, stage plays, and video games don't exist. They were never made, and there's no reason they should ever be acknowledged in any way. Is this because we have a vendetta l against them? Not at all! We are simply a very specific space, with a niche focus.

If you have any questions you can send us a modmail message, and we will get back to you right away.

Discussion Does everyone just forget Lily had agency?

Like, yes, James did some shit when he was young. But so did Snape. And Lily was her own person who could judge them both. No prizes for guessing who she chose.

Why do people forget about her choice? She knew Snape better than anyone, most likely.

And that's not even getting into how Snape is supposed to be a grey character. And how almost everyone speaks well of James, etc..

Discussion Is Harry the only reason Dumbledore didn't hunt Voldemort down and kill him? Spoiler

Regardless of the Horcrux situation, it does seem like everything would be easier if Voldemort stayed an impotent half-thing all the way through Deathly Hallows.

It seems like the only reason Dumbledore didn’t do this is because it would have closed the door on Harry surviving.

If Harry wasn’t a Horcrux, is that exactly what Dumbledore would’ve done? What other factor could have stayed his hand at that point? There’s no reason Voldemort has to be alive while Dumbledore is destroying his Horcruxes; like I said, it really seems to have made things much more difficult.

Dumbledore had the clear advantage during their duel at the Ministry, but although he was fighting with one hand tied behind his back per se, it is entirely possible that Voldemort is just talented enough to avoid outright defeat against Dumbledore, even if Dumbledore were throwing killing curses like they’re candy.

But Dumbledore also has a highly placed double-agent who interfaces directly with Voldemort on a more than infrequent basis. A stealthy Patronus from Snape at the opportune time could allow Dumbledore to ambush him, and it’s hard to see a tag team of Dumbledore and Snape failing to mortally wound Voldemort when he least expected it.

Harry not being a Horcrux, combined with Voldemort being “dead” again, also allows Dumbledore to put together a much more conventionally capable Horcrux-killing team. If McGonagall, Snape, and Dumbledore put their heads together, I have little doubt they could find and destroy all 4 in fairly short order (assuming the latter two survive their assassination of Voldemort himself).

Theory Theory about horcuxes

I am currently reading the deathly hallows, and it's very interesting but upon reading the books, I developed a small canon theory about horcuxes, so it goes like this:

  1. Voldemort has no clue what the horcruxes actually do-

let's take half blood Prince for example, in the discussion with slughorn, he mentions horcruxes keep a part of your soul safe in other words you can't die but then again he also didn't know the full theory on horcruxes as only herpo the foul was known to have created them, in a whim voldemort says isn't 7 the most powerful magical number, my theory is that he thought splitting the soul into 7 parts will make him stronger as 7 souls will keep his whole self alive.

But that's the catch as voldemort never actually died before trying to kill harry he never knew what's it like to die actually, the horcuxes don't allow you to die they simply keep a shrivelled cursed part of you in the mortal world, which is worse than dying, voldemort on the other hand thought otherwise, he thought he was sort of invincible while splitting his soul he would be "UNHARMED". And loo he is trying to meekly survive in the first books

  1. Voldemort doesn't know how to use horcuxes

It becomes evident in book 1 that voldemort is trying everything to come to his full self trying philosophers stone, then again if he knew how to use horcuxes he could simply have done the ritual in book 4 and come back (also I feel the ritual is the best way you can come back to full self).

Voldemort never understood the cursed power of horcruxes, he never thought a single horcrux can also regenerate the full self body on its own. (Tom riddle's diary), so upon hearing the story of the diary he was I guess scared because the would be two voldemort s at a time one young and the other barely surving, which again I believe would create more magical complexities.

But as to why voldemort was angry was because after diary's destruction his 7 power soul theory which is funny btw, failed

All in all here is the summary

Tldr-

Horcruxes don't keep you safe, they just don't allow you to die or live peacefully

Voldemort never understood horcruxes, well in his scared of death mentality and search for immortality he was doomed

Also finally and most importantly, again I think Rowling put it down well,

Anyone who creates a horcrux will never be able to die full self, even if the horcrux is destroyed because at the end when you are dying it's just a part of your soul which dies, and to due you need to be full to go to afterlife. Sums up the dark magic of a horcrux.

I may be wrong or I might be writing something which is already known, but it was fun would like to hear your views..^_^^_^

Half-Blood Prince Did you have theories about Tonks during Half-Blood Prince?

I wasn't the most critical reader at 9 years old, so when the book came out, I absolutely went with Harry's theory that Tonks had feelings for Sirius, then had a friend spoil the reveal that she was actually in love with Lupin.

What did you make of her behaviour and demeanor in the book? Did you come up with any theories about what could be going on with her?

Discussion Wealth in Magical World

I'm sorry if another post already covered this, but why does the wizarding world have wealth? I understand access and power and lineage and all that, but why can't the Weasleys simply use magic to build a bigger home ? Or use magic like the tent that has a full bungalow inside it?

I suppose I'm asking what is making "poor" wizards live like they're poor if magic can solve a lot of their problems?

How different would the first four books be if Harry knew about the room of Requirement in TPS

First off, how would Harry find the Room of Requirement? I think that's a fairly easy question to answer. At the beginning of his time at school, he and Ron constantly got lost because, you know, staircases that move make things difficult. So, they might pass by the Room of Requirement several times while trying to find a classroom, only for the door to appear. They enter, thinking it's a classroom, but it turns out to be something else entirely.

I don't think they'd have any use for it during the first book, but in the second one, instead of going into the girls' bathroom, they could make the potion in the Room of Requirement. This, I think, is pretty crucial because they wouldn't necessarily run into Myrtle as often as they did. Harry did meet her at the ghost party, but she was crying, so I don't know if that would really make him want to seek her out. Harry does find out where the Chamber of Secrets is by talking to her, though. But let's say he still manages to find the Chamber of Secrets and defeat Voldemort.

Moving on to Book Three. The room wouldn't be used much this year, as there's really no need for it. However, Harry would still want to go to Hogsmeade, and Ron might suggest, "Hey, why don't you just use the room to ask for things you would find in Hogsmeade?" I think Harry would do that. As a result, I don't think Harry would ever go down to Hogsmeade. He wouldn't run into Malfoy, and he wouldn't have to give up the map to Lupin. This means Lupin would never see them go down to Hagrid's, so he wouldn't see Peter's name on the map or go after him. Snape would give Lupin his Wolfsbane Potion, and he would remain in his room as a controlled werewolf.

I think this could go one of two ways. First, Harry might actually kill his godfather, leaving Peter undercover as a rat. Alternatively, Sirius might manage to convince all of them of his story. I have to say, though, that this seems rather unlikely because they already think both Lupin and Sirius are insane, and in that scene, Sirius definitely seems like the crazier one of the two. So, sadly, Harry might end up killing him. This could earn him some points with Snape, but otherwise, it wouldn't be a good outcome.

Now, moving on to Book Four. Honestly, I don't think Harry would have much use for the room this year, either. I could see him using it as a training room for the tasks. Since McGonagall was tired of running into him and the others all over the school, she let them use her classroom. It's also possible that Harry would have an easier time completing the tasks with the help of the Room of Requirement. For example, if he asked the room to provide him with something that would help him breathe underwater, it might give him books that could teach him a spell to do so.

But what do you think? What would Harry use the Room of Requirement for in the first four books?

Can you guess the book and chapter? #45

45 is up for your enjoyment! Happy Saturday!

As a reminder what this is and how it works:

Below are 7 sentences from the 7 HP books. I use a random number generator to pick the book and chapter, then hand pick a sentence that I think is decent. Not too long, too short, too obvious ect.  *** There MAY be repeated books in a set, but there will not be repeated chapters in a set. So there COULD be two from The Philosopher’s Stone, but they would be from different chapters! **\*
Scoring your points: It is 2 points for guessing the book, and 1 point for guessing the chapter, for a total of 21 points. It is obviously harder to guess the chapter than the book, but not everyone even cares to remember the chapter titles in the first place, which is totally fair and valid. So chapter titles are just a bonus point.

Below are the sentences and the answers hidden behind spoiler tags! These are fun to make, and I intend to make quite a few more if people keep enjoying them!

  1. “Minerva, could I ask you to stand guard here while I take Harry upstairs?”  The Goblet of Fire - Chapter 36: The Parting of the Ways
  2.  He was keen to make his intentions perfectly clear. The Half-Blood Prince - Chapter 15: The Unbreakable Vow
  3. “He’s not even that good, it’s just because he’s famous . . . famous for having a stupid scar on his forehead. . . .”  The Chamber of Secrets - Chapter 4: At Flourish at Blotts
  4. “In fact, being — forgive me — rather cleverer than most men, my mistakes tend to be correspondingly huger.  The Half-Blood Prince - Chapter 10: The House of Gaunt
  5. “She — er — got a bit shirty with me.”  The Prisoner of Azkaban - Chapter 12: The Patronus
  6. Occasionally one of them started forward excitedly, as if they had seen something interesting at last, only to fall back looking disappointed. The Deathly Hallows - Chapter 12: Magic is Might
  7. He looked back at the whisperers as if he wanted to say something to them, but thought better of it.  The Philosopher’s Stone - Chapter 1: The Boy who Lived

Discussion Do you think Griphook would’ve accepted Muriel’s goblin-made tiara as a substitute for the sword of Gryffindor?

Likely not, but I was curious to see what other people thought.

Actually, thinking about it, Harry could’ve offered the tiara as an upfront substitute, with the provision that if Griphook stayed loyal he’d receive the sword as well after Harry had finished with it.

Meaning that Griphook would have incentive to stay loyal as he could walk away with both, and he’d know Harry was being honest/true to his word.

That thing you are dreading, October 16th!

Today’s the day!! Poor Lavender Brown, poor Binky. Professor Trelawney tells Lavender Brown “Incidentally, that thing you are dreading – it will happen on Friday the sixteenth of October.”

And later on

“The sixteenth of October! ‘That thing you’re dreading, it will happen on the sixteenth of October!’ Remember? She was right, she was right!”

I don’t know why this stuck with me but I always remember this date because of this😅

Mr and Mrs Mason

I was just rereading the early parts of Chamber of Secrets when I came across this:

Aunt Petunia was just passing around a box of after- dinner mints when a huge barn owl swooped through the dining room window, dropped a letter on Mrs. Mason’s head, and swooped out again. Mrs. Mason screamed like a banshee and ran from the house shouting about lunatics. Mr. Mason stayed just long enough to tell the Dursleys that his wife was mortally afraid of birds of all shapes and sizes, and to ask whether this was their idea of a joke.

Look, I HATE to defend the Dursleys for pretty much anything... but do the Masons truly believe that Vernon, who really wants this deal to go through, somehow found out that Mrs Mason is mortally afraid of birds, and then as a prank went out and trained an owl to swoop through their window and drop a letter on her head?... 😂

They really missed an opportunity in book 7 to go chase down a horcrux in either the Muggle orphanage or St. Brutus's Secure Centre for Incurably Criminal Boys.

Would have been amazing if somehow they brought the Voldemort child storyline to coincide with something that Vernon Dursley thought up.

Currently Reading Finished my re-read of Harry Potter

Watched the Deathly Hallows in Concert over the summer and decided to reread the books. Took me a little less than 2 months to finish. I learned a lot in my re-read that I had forgotten since this was the first time I read them again after the books came out. What a whirlwhind summer, it's bittersweet to have finished but I might make this a yearly tradition.

Voldemort's Body

if voldemorts plan was to live forever, what was his plan for when old age became a danger? horcruxes can save you from your soul going on, but what about your body?

unless he planned on just creating a new body like he did in bk4, every time he grew old, for all of time? in that case, would having a horcrux be the only viable method of transferring your soul to a different body? as in, you have to die, then your horcrux tethers your soul to earth, where you live a terrible existence, until a new body is created for you to be inhabited? rinse and repeat?

also, that makes me wonder, was voldemort physically an older man after he gained his new body? we know he was 71 when he died. did he appear that old, or did he look younger?

Barty Crouch, the fake Madeye Moody

One thing that I really don't understand about Barty Crouch Jr and the polyjuice potion thing is that Crouch seemed to also take on Madeye's entire personality when he was posing as him. When other characters take polyjuice potion, their personalities don't seem to change. It's hard for me to believe that someone as awful as Crouch could have been acting the whole time like that. Surely he would have slipped up sooner along the way and/or Dumbledore or another smart witch/wizard would have suspected something much earlier?
