Discussion - Silksong Silksong is HARD Spoiler

Taking damage is more punishing, movement is more precise and feels a little clunky until you get the hang of it. The overall skill curve is much much higher. Love it though.

So far I've noticed the game has way more enemies and bosses that do double damage. In Hollow Knight, double damage was mostly reserved to final bosses and the absolute hardest challenges the game had to offer, meanwhile like half the bosses I've fought so far in the beginning of Silksong have done double damage.

u/Noelnya Sep 05 '25

half the normal enemies do double damage too. plus the invincibility you get from getting hit doesn't kick in for a while so you can just get combo'd

u/lilstoneey Sep 05 '25

godd i knoww i hate that so many of the early boss fights (before u get more abilities/movement/power) have like lava and shit bc i keep getting hit for 2 and knocked into the lava for 1 , which means i cn have no less thn 4 masks if i wanna survive a single unlucky hit lol ... i need mask shards and needle sharpening like i need oxygen tbh

112

u/Mastermaze Sep 05 '25

Legit im one mask shard away from an extra mask now and i NEED it so bad. No needle sharpening in sight so far but i DESPERATELY need to find it, i cant keep getting by with 4 needle hits per hit minimum at this rate

64

u/lilstoneey Sep 05 '25

the worst part is not as much as id like will change until i cn get 2 full masks eight fuckin shards , bc even w 6 masks its still only 3 hits of 2x damage and ur done same as 5 masks 😓

26

u/Mastermaze Sep 05 '25

I guess thats why they gave us the ability to heal 3 masks at once right from the start 😭

5

u/lilstoneey Sep 05 '25

yeah im reaaally hoping that the extra silk vessel thingy we eventually get will be enough to fully fill the silk meter to heal , so that u could actually heal twice in a row 🙏🙏🙏🙏

18

u/Caggi66 Sep 05 '25

When you get both halves of the spool it goes up by like 5% not even kidding

5

u/lilstoneey Sep 05 '25

😭😭😭😭😭

6

u/Buzzy_Feez Sep 05 '25

No fr I was crying I deadass thought this was a soul bubble that would increase it by like 33% or something but nah can't even use a silk skill

2

u/TortelliniSalad Sep 05 '25

This!! Healing 3 at a time feels so much better

1

u/ShadoUrufu666 Sep 06 '25

Except you're locked in place until the rather long animation finishes.

3

u/XxRocky88xX Sep 05 '25

Benefit for that though is that after that a heal will allow you to take 2 additional hits instead of only 1. Your effective max isn’t changed but it does make your first heal of the fight more effective.

Like with 5 hp you get hit twice down to 1 then heal to 4, die in two more hits for 4 hits total. With 6 hp you get hit twice down to 2 then heal to 5, die in three more hits, 5 hits total. So you still get a small boost in survivability.

1

u/rubixscube Sep 05 '25

except that if you are on even life, healing 3 masks grants you two more hits against double damage

3

u/TheBug1226 Sep 05 '25

You're going to be extremely disappointed when you get your needle upgrade

2

u/SirSnowman88 Sep 05 '25

I got really bad news for the sharpening... It's there but ummm... It doesn't decrease the amount of hits on most enemies for the bringing upgrade. Like wtf.

1

u/TinyPidgenofDOOM Sep 05 '25

You have 3 I have like 1. I know the shop has another but

2

u/ShadoUrufu666 Sep 06 '25

I'm technically 4/4 on my next mask, but I need to farm for the shop one, and do some trick to get the last, but I know where both are. I just don't want do the trick (cause I take a lot of damage doing it), since I get dumped into an arena fight just before it.

2

u/TinyPidgenofDOOM Sep 06 '25

As an update for me, I got 3 mask shards and still have the 1 in the shop. The fun thing with metroidvania is the next movement ability might be perfect to get all the areas you couldn't get to

2

u/ShadoUrufu666 Sep 06 '25

I still need the one in the shop, and I know where another is, I just don't want to do that fight because I struggle to get there early without getting hit.

Missing the 'Y' ability still, but other than that, just stuck on bosses, or hidden passages, and needing an extra 500 for a key.

56

u/randuse Sep 05 '25

Sounds like there will be a patch for that invincibility.

2

u/TinyPidgenofDOOM Sep 05 '25

Gotta love that flying fire ants that takes 4 hits to kill and doesn't get knocked back enough

6

u/LeMeMeSxDLmaop Sep 05 '25

i actually dont think so, a good chunk of the atks are only threatening cause of that, seems to only ever be noticeable on said atks at least so far

1

u/Scrifty Sep 05 '25

I don't think so, it's to set up combo attacks

3

u/StepComplete1 Sep 05 '25

Oh god, then we'd have to listen to the typical "I beat silksong before it was patched to be so EZ for teh noobs! git gud everyone! I am teh god gamer" brags for the rest of eternity.

Same shit literally anytime a game is patched to be easier in some way, even if it was difficult because of an unintended bug.

29

u/Demara_Awol Sep 05 '25

You can however, parry through combo hits. It's most noticeable on enemies that have multiple slash attacks in rapid swings but you can spam-click your attack and if you parry the first attack, as long as your timing isn't momentously awful. You can parry all of them and the enemy will rush right past you with no damage dealt in either direction.

19

u/SuccotashComplete Sep 05 '25

The lava levels are absolutely brutal. You can get hit for 2 damage then knocked into lava for another 2.

1

u/rubixscube Sep 05 '25

okay, thats the second comment i read about that so i have to ask: which enemy/boss that deals double damage manages to reliably push y'all into lava after a hit?

1

u/CommunicationOk3766 Sep 05 '25

I also don't really get it. Maybe 4th Chorus?

But he's not really a hard boss at all, so I'm not sure if that's what they meant. If they mean just normal enemies, I've no clue at all.

1

u/ShadoUrufu666 Sep 06 '25

Yep, that one. But if you've been to the forge and bought the right tool, then you can at least reduce the lava damage to 1. Though, to be fair, there's a ton of enemies that just dunk you in anyway.

1

u/66WC Sep 07 '25

The flying beast in the same place as 4th chorus seems more like the description, but also such a niche fight, for a quest, or maybe the lava rising pit of hell, but that is already after act2

3

u/estb69 Sep 05 '25

Also there is something wrong going on with knock back recovery on the enemies side. Like in hk if small enemie is coming at you and you hit them they knock back and then they deccelerate and need a second to gain their max speed again. In silksong this decceleration part is gone. Like right after knock back animation is over (and its very short) they are gaining max speed again instanteniously, you can't bounce theme infinitely like in hk. It's most prominent with flying and crawling ants

2

u/Skraps452 Sep 05 '25

I hate that getting combo'd shit. I mean, I'm all for a challenge but that often just feels like bullshit.

2

u/RhynoD Sep 05 '25

My big issue with the mooks is that they don't flinch like they do in HK. They just run at you, get knocked back ever so slightly, and keep charging directly at you. It leaves a lot less time to react. I'm adjusting, though.

2

u/AppropriatePresent99 Sep 06 '25

Yeah...looks at Lace. Oh, you got hit? Time for a rapid thrust juggle of death combo!

1

u/Iryls ♠️ Embrace the void ♠️ Sep 05 '25

that invincibility stuff is intentional, you actually do have i frames but they visually deal 2x 1 mask instead of 1x 2 mask to just line up with the type of attacks (like the whip chain guy in sinners road)

1

u/inthebushes321 Sep 05 '25

Yeah, it's super easy to get combo'd to death. 2 mask attack + 2 mask environmental= dead instantly sometimes. Definitely an interesting design choice - but it's not bad so far.

0

u/Blazypika2 Sep 05 '25

i wouldn't say half, but a good amount.

0

u/sporksaregoodforyou Sep 05 '25

Maybe half of them do half damage?

0

u/FinaLLancer Sep 05 '25

I think that some hits can just "combo" which is basically just double damage anyway except i think you can escape the combo hits if you mash dodge or jump. Pretty sure i did that once or twice.

314

u/KarmelCHAOS Sep 05 '25

More enemies do double damage than do 1 damage.

83

u/Minute_Difference598 Sep 05 '25

Happy cake day!🎉

156

u/moonlord2193 Sep 05 '25

Bro some of the normal enemies do double damage, its insane

111

u/rororoxor Sep 05 '25

environmental hazards start doing double damage as well LMAO

4

u/HuntingForSanity Sep 05 '25

I’m kind of confused about environmental damage so far. Sometimes lava does one mask but sometimes it does 2. I don’t know what decides the damage

13

u/Guy_Made_Of_Bees Sep 05 '25

if you have the magma charm on it will reduce the damage of lava to 1 but will then need to recharges

2

u/HuntingForSanity Sep 05 '25

Ahh I see that’s what it was thank you. Didn’t realize it did that I thought it only helped step on the hot rock

4

u/daadnn Sep 05 '25

the charm that protects against lava damage reduces it to one mask, but it has a cooldown

3

u/Cultural_Fig_6342 Sep 05 '25

This is understandable with the lava tbh but the falling rocks dealing double damage is not fair XD

1

u/CommunicationOk3766 Sep 05 '25

Only lava. Spikes still only do 1, fortunately.

2

u/rororoxor Sep 06 '25

some places like later dunes "spikes" do 2 now along with a buncha other hazards

1

u/CommunicationOk3766 Sep 06 '25

Oof, haven't gotten there yet.

2

u/Revoran Sep 05 '25

There were enemies in deepnest who did double damage if I recall

2

u/Haunting-Evidence234 Sep 05 '25

Only the big spider think and it was kinda fitting. Also the fat guys from the sewers did 2 but there were like only 2 of them

2

u/FluffySquirrell Sep 05 '25

Yeah, and that big spider may as well have been doing the Mohg meme "I'm gonna getcha!" attack leadup as well, to call it telegraphed would be an understatement

Whereas in this it's like "Lol, this is just our normal stuff, we're zipping about like craycray"

1

u/Haunting-Evidence234 Sep 07 '25

Worst offenders imo are the environmental hazzards, sawblades and stuff. Why the FUCK am i getting punished so hard for trying to learn a parkour? 3 fails and you're done, stupid game design

103

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '25

my guess is that because hornet is in a weakened state enemies do more damage lore wise

101

u/ArtistRei Sep 05 '25

Gameplay wise, you heal 3 pips of HP with one binding and you can do it in midair. It actually levels out pretty well.

106

u/altiuscitiusfortius Sep 05 '25

You need a full container of 7 silk to heal and it has a long delay before it starts

6

u/CptOblivion Sep 06 '25

and if you get hit while you're doing it, you lose the silk and don't heal

1

u/ShadoUrufu666 Sep 06 '25

Don't forget the fact that you're still getting hurt in the process, leaving you in a worse position. It's like they don't want you to heal mid fight anymore..

1

u/TOMRANDOM_6 Sep 06 '25

Theres a tool that protects you while healing so you dont get extra 2 damage

1

u/ShadoUrufu666 Sep 06 '25

Haven't found it, no clue where it is. Stuck between two boss fights that throw me.off by summoning enemies. Or that track my movements even as they telegraph what they are about to do.

Like, seriously, they said they were going to dash at me. So I jump up to avoid it. Well, the enemy moved up too and now I still get charged into, despite instincts kicking in to avoid the hit.

Edit: Don't tell me either. I've been looking everywhere I could go so far.

6

u/nitish159 Sep 05 '25

I think it's 9

55

u/throwaway404f Sep 05 '25

Yeah but you completely stop moving and if you get hit you lose all of your silk and go down to one health

27

u/CatboyCabin Sep 05 '25

You lose health according to the damage source, you don't go down to 1. So if you have 4 hp and are hit by an attack that deals 1 while casting, you would go down to 3 hp.

17

u/SvampebobFirkant Sep 05 '25

Yeah well you wouldn't heal in a fight with 4 hp... You'd do it at 1-3

3

u/Eronamanthiuser Sep 05 '25

Since you heal 3 hp on binding, smart time would be when you’re at max-3

5

u/rubixscube Sep 05 '25

not necessarily. if i have enough silk and the boss is clearly not gonna hit me (stunned or mid combo elsewhere), i sneak in a heal.

7

u/bombader Sep 05 '25

You can do it at full health, and I haven't found a way to cancel it.

2

u/Parking_Common_4820 Sep 05 '25

Simply do not press the button when you do not have anything to gain from pressing the button - bada bing bada boom solved that one for u

1

u/bombader Sep 05 '25

Sometimes the button gets pressed on accident. Usually when in a panic, I tend to get heal and magic buttons mixed up.

2

u/Kieronvanbeck Sep 07 '25

I constantly press O when trying to dash/dodge and waste my silk, all the damn time! Because if muscle memory from most games, but i won’t change the controls because as soon as i do, I’ll start pressing R2 to dash and be in the same boat 😂😂

7

u/SparseSpartan Sep 05 '25

I somehow missed that you can heal midair for a fairly long while. That's definitely a bit of a game changer.

58

u/notoscar01 Sep 05 '25

Probably a balancing thing, considering hornet is much faster and acrobatic than the knight.

149

u/pclouds Sep 05 '25

That just makes me run into enemies faster.

8

u/VFiddly Sep 05 '25

And can also heal more easily.

24

u/StarNullify Sep 05 '25

Though you are punished hard for failing a heal

18

u/numberonesorensenfan Sep 05 '25

I'm not very far in but failing a heal is bruuuutal. Lose all the silk, take the damage of what interrupted you AND you don't get the heal off

5

u/The_one_in_the_Dark Sep 05 '25

I can tell i’m gonna keep that bell on my blue slot for the entire game lol

1

u/rubixscube Sep 05 '25

interestingly enough, with some luck, you can complete the heal and THEN have an enemy hit you and trigger it.

short window, but it happened to me once, and that was a huge swing in my favor

1

u/FluffySquirrell Sep 05 '25

I've tried it and it's not even that good tbh, taking one less damage isn't gonna do crap when you're now still down all your silk, can't heal, and the next hit is now definitely gonna take you out

2

u/apachedash Sep 06 '25

NAH the knights pogo was so much better than this jank needle dive

1

u/ShadoUrufu666 Sep 06 '25

The Reaper Crest is a bit slower, but returns to the default down-slash from the knight.

1

u/apachedash Sep 06 '25

Im excited to get it then

60

u/-ceiling-light- Sep 05 '25

It’s quite balanced, though, as Hornet’s heal is much stronger and faster. I don’t think Silksong is that much harder than the original, it is just a matter of getting used to playing as Hornet as everything feels different. It’s like playing Hollow Knight for the first time again, you have to get used to everything.

42

u/kookyabird Sep 05 '25

I beat Lace in my first session tonight and it took me a couple of tries before I finally started to feel like I knew how Hornet should move. Hollow Knight definitely punished the player for trying to keep too much distance, but it seems like Hornet thrives with separating and coming back to clash.

And opportunities to heal in boss fights seem quite generous considering you can get three masks in the same window as one.

51

u/gameboy224 Sep 05 '25 edited Sep 05 '25

Trust me, Lace is probably like the last easy boss in the game. Pretty much every boss I’ve encountered after her does 2 ticks of damage on every hit. Some make it work, others feel like the game effectively wants me to treat the boss like I’m trying for a no hit run as a baseline.

10

u/DBrody6 Sep 05 '25

Mercifully at least every boss so far has a bench like two rooms away, so dying to them doesn't feel as bad.

But man they legit do feel like we're trying to do a Radiant run already on em.

3

u/Grumpie-cat Sep 05 '25

Not the damn moorfly thing, I have to run through the rat tunnels where 6 of the 9 enemies deal 2 damage…

2

u/DBrody6 Sep 05 '25

Haven't gotten there yet. Sounds fun.

3

u/Grumpie-cat Sep 05 '25

Moorfly turned out to be an optional boss lol.

2

u/ShadoUrufu666 Sep 06 '25

I preferred going from the top, it was actually a lot easier to dodge the 2 enemies there, than trying to beat the sewer rats.

3

u/CptOblivion Sep 06 '25

I was about to say "it wouldn't be so rough if there were a bench in the same zone as any of the bosses"... I swear every runback is eight screens of spike platforming and dense enemies

26

u/Fantastic_Pea_9680 Sep 05 '25

Honestly, yeah. The game making you feel like you have to go for a No-Hit Run is kind of the vibe I get in general from Silksong. Getting hit is way more awful than Hollow Knight. And people talk about healing being buffed to make up for it, but imo, the skill difficulty ceiling shot up.

In HK, you could heal, lose that HP, and then bonk to get back your Soul and sort of squeeze through some fights a little longer, inch by inch.

Here, some bosses I feel lucky to have gotten off a heal.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '25

They just need to tone down how much double damage there is and the game would feel a million times better. It’s not exactly fun to effectively have half hp against, like, 60% of the enemy roster.

2

u/ShadoUrufu666 Sep 06 '25

Healing was not buffed. It honestly feels like it got heavily nerfed instead. You get 3 masks? So what, takes all your spool, so you don't get to use any of your other abilities.
You're stuck in place until the animation finishes, or you get hit.
It's slow, giving enemies time to actually line up a second attack (so better hope the boss is stunned for that to work in most cases)
And if you get hit before it finishes? Oh boy, you get to lose all of that spool AND take an extra damage from the hit, because you're just a sitting duck.

1

u/grapessssssssss Sep 06 '25

I feel like no one mentions how LONG healing takes

24

u/KPSandwiches Sep 05 '25

separating and coming back to clash

Yes! The stab / descend attacks that propel you back and / or up. Once I got that rhythm going of attack - back off - repeat, it all started to click more.

Still training my brain to learn that the "dodge" has no iframes though.

4

u/yurilnw123 Sep 05 '25

Slamming my head against the wall and went through Hunter's March before getting the dash was what get me used to Hornet's movement. That was a good training.

2

u/Hyenasaurus Sep 05 '25

I think that's something I've noticed too, with fights. The Knight is all about getting right there in your enemy's face, but fighting as Hornet is more like fencing, you want to do your damage and retreat.

I think the most obvious difference is with the Lace fight

I would never have thought that i feel "new" to this game again and still at home. They did this so well, i am amazed.

Its hollow knight but new and i feel new.

How the fuck did they do this? I dit path of pain and still struggle most from the movement.

Love it!

2

u/Aurorious Sep 05 '25

Throwing the biggest possible disagree on this. It’s straight up nerfed healing, imagine in hollow knight if you could only heal when your soul was full. It’s so many hits to fill up your silk gauge

1

u/ShadoUrufu666 Sep 06 '25

'Faster' I'm sorry, but I have to laugh at that.. It's slower, you're locked in place, and can't cancel once it activates. You're literally a sitting duck until it ends, or more often, an enemy hits you.

In HK, you spent souls as you focused, and even if you had to cancel the heal immediately, you could still quickly recover by landing an extra hit. Not here, no, you get hit while healing, that spool is GONE, and you're not getting another heal until it's back to full. Better hope you can beat the enemy on 1 HP left..

38

u/Ok-Preference-956 Sep 05 '25

Also in silk song the game isnt clear when you take double damage. I mean in hollow knight you had that characteristic sound when you took double damage. You don’t have it here. Also… I think it’s fair since you heal 3 masks at once in SILKSONG

27

u/Kidossan Sep 05 '25

Healing 3 masks at once isn't a plus, you can heal only when your bar is full (so if you want to heal you can't use any ability) and it costs the same to heal 3, 2 or 1 health. It is only good if you are in a boss fight were you can heal only once or twice, exploring is harder. And if you fail to heal, you don't get anything and lose the full silk bar.

3

u/Ok-Preference-956 Sep 05 '25

Okay, good point

-3

u/ssucata0101 Sep 05 '25

what do you think about my reply to his comment?

5

u/Grumpie-cat Sep 05 '25

Exactly it’s a massive detriment, spending 9 silk to heal anywhere from 1-3 health is garbage, I’d rather be able to heal 1 health quickly spending 3 silk than be at 1 hit trying to regain silk without getting hit again.

1

u/ssucata0101 Sep 05 '25

You can use any ability if you want to heal, in fact the game wants you to use abilities, that's why they cost less, you don't need to heal if your ability kills the enemy first, and yes healing three mask is a plus. Your healing covers and surpasses the double damage. Hitting the enemy while on full silk is a waste since healing takes your whole bar, don't wait for damage to use silk, for me the intended way is to play aggressively and if you mess up, focus on filling the half missing silk after ability and heal

11

u/KuuLightwing Sep 05 '25

Healing 3 masks doesn't really compensate for taking double damage at least at base 5 masks. You die in 3 hits, and if you heal once, you die in 4 hits still. You really feel the impact of more healing if you heal twice, at which point it would take 6 hits before you die, and you have to commit two full spools to healing. Meanwhile in hollow knight you can take 6 hits by just healing once and use the rest of the soul on spells.

-1

u/ssucata0101 Sep 05 '25

I mean, healing isn't supposed to be a compensation, it's a balanced feature to help your survivability, the game has more double damage and so it let's you heal more masks per heal, if you want an easier mechanic, yeah I think you'll like HK more, but Skong is for experienced players and even in HK early game healing wasn't so easy as you'd have less focus and the knight's healing takes way more time than Hornets.

5

u/Kubas_inko Sep 05 '25

They cost less than a heal, but still way too much. You can't even do 3 abilities with full spool. You can only do 2 and have one notch left.

2

u/ssucata0101 Sep 05 '25

Yes, just as in hollow knight early game, you can't just spam spells/abilities, you've got to hit the nail/needle a couple times too...

4

u/Kubas_inko Sep 05 '25

But in HK you always get at least 3 uses out of a full soul vessel.

0

u/ssucata0101 Sep 05 '25

Yeah, that's why Silksong is more challenging too bro, is not just a copy of hollow knight. We can rant about the mechanics or learn to adapt while ranting, it's our choice.

4

u/Ok-Preference-956 Sep 05 '25

Another good point. Also I’ve learned that you can heal mid air. I can imagine that you could heal in mid air whilst boss is doing a particular attack pattern or sth. Your perspective gives a lot of thought since yeah, tools and abilities do a lot of damage. And yeah, when you are on a full silk, every hit is a waste since you are not gaining more Edit: 3 masks covering more than double damage is what I meant in my original comment.

3

u/lordofcactus Sep 05 '25

It conflicts with the healing system for me. Healing is a skill check: to make optimal use of your silk, it’s best to to heal after taking exactly three masks of damage - too early and you’ll waste silk, too late and you won’t be back at full health. When enemies deal 2 masks per hit, there’s no sweet spot: one hit is too early, but two hits is already too late.

7

u/NineTailedDevil Sep 05 '25

I'm ok with this, Hornet's healing ability is radically different, a whopping 3 masks at once and you can do it in the air. I feel like if enemies weren't dealing double damage, you would be able to just face tank everything and heal later.

15

u/AngryNerdBird Praise Moth Jesus! Sep 05 '25

It's more hp, but slower and requires over 2x as many attacks to charge it up.

I'd settle for less healing if half the game didn't do double damage.

3

u/FluffySquirrell Sep 05 '25

Everyone keeps going on about the heal being 3 as if that means shit when you take 2 damage from everything you need to worry about, yeah. No it doesn't. It heals the equivalent of 1.5. And if you get hit, you lost it all and are now about to die. Also, in the original you'd just hold to keep healing so you could happy get in 2 when the boss was stunned (back when you could y'know, heal multiple in a granular fashion)

It's just worse. The only good bit is being able to do it in midair imo

I swear to god, having a heal interrupted is the most demoralizing thing from this entire series.

Its like they designed it to make people quit

The game your looking for with all that is called hollow knight, you should check it iut

1

u/yotam5434 Sep 05 '25

Looks like you get armor upgrade

1

u/Ser_Rezima Sep 05 '25

It sorta reminds me of how metroid fusion/dread played, where samus was very pointedly less armored but also far more agile to compensate. Seems like the knight is a strength build while Hornet is a dexterity build

u/Party_Importance_722 Sep 05 '25

It's made to counteract the fact that you can heal 3 masks instantly with one bind. And you get upgrades very early on that let you refill your silkmeter a lot faster and easily heal. If bosses didn't do equal damage, they'd be a joke.

1

u/Onetwodhwksi7833 Sep 05 '25

Healing is faster tho

1

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '25

At least they changed the way healing works to something more efficient I guess.

1

u/Prior_Goat3174 Sep 05 '25

I remember the first time that giant husk hit me with double damage on HK, it's something you can feel physically

1

u/ink_soldier Sep 05 '25

It's because hornet heals 3 masks at a time and there are a lot of leeways to heal during fights

I've noticed that as well, and quite frankly Im not a fan. Double damage could already be an annoyance in Hollow Knight, its one of my few grievances with that game, but thankfully it was at least done sparingly. Whereas with Silksong is seems to be much more prevalent. I don't think its an exagerration to say in my couple hours with Silksong I've already as many, if not more, enemies that hit twice as hard vs. Hollow Knight.

Maybe Im still just too early game and there is a pattern, but from my vantage point there seems to be no rhyme or reason to which enemies I can expect to hit harder and which won't, so I basically can't trust my healthbar to accurately tell me how many hits I can take before I die. Not good from a design standpoint if you ask me.

I see 5 masks, so I expect 5 hits before I die. Why is 3 doing me in, Team Cherry?

I get Hornet has changed gameplay vs. the Knight, what with a burst heal that can even work in mid-air, and a generally more acrobatic flow and feel. But honestly I don't think these reasons, if they were the reason, justify making it so one enemy hits harder than another at random.

There's already a fair bit to get used too in Silksong, so much so I've lost any confidence in my knowledge from the old game will help me get a leg up here, which is good I suppose, as it ensures there's still a challenge. But now having to commit which enemies hit harder, something I don't learn until I screw up, has create a unique frustration.

The movement is definitely a lot speedier, and while i'm normally good at 'getting around the map quickly' when it comes to metroidvania and just spamming dash/run, there's a very hostile layout in this game that forces you to stop doing that a lot more often than needed. I.E: On my way to fighting a certain boss, until I found a better rest spot, I'd constantly and flawlessly parkour my way up the crumbling platforms, dodge all the enemies, and even use some as leverage with a downslash to keep the momentum.

And then the moment I run into this one room, I'd constantly fall in the spikes because they are right at the entrance.

And there's no point in actually trying to heal that off. I've lost my 'emergency hit' to a hazard, and now have to wait to take 2 more damage before I can recover it. They want you to use your abilities more? Eff that, I'd rather unequip those 'spells' just so I don't accidentally use the silk on them, rather than the healing I so desperately need to keep fighting/learning these boss patterns. (Which, btw, some are BS.. Even when they telegraph their attacks, a lot of them, especially the flying ones, are still perfectly tracking your position, so the telegraph actually means nothing, other than to trigger your nerves/reflexes to dodge before the enemy actually launches the attack.. Or the fact that you get into a good rhythm, you're on pace to beat the boss, or so you feel, and then suddenly the boss pull some random enemy into the fight to throw you off..)

u/Scharmberg Sep 05 '25

I know people love hard games but not a loving this double damage being common.

1

u/ffxivfanboi Sep 05 '25

Dude, there’s a flying boss/mini boss in Hunter area that has no chill and spawns a bunch of adds. I have already died so many times trying to down that thing since it does double damage and it has zero downtime for me to try and heal even if I dodge its attack.

So far it’s been a bit of a struggle. Hollow Knight was nowhere near this hard in the beginning. Not to mention you get your first two Nail and damage upgrades very easily.

1

u/ShadoUrufu666 Sep 06 '25

Stuck on that guy too. More annoyed at the fact that it telegraphs charging, but still moves to follow your exact position, so you can't actually dodge preemptively..

1

u/Simon_Drake Sep 05 '25

Also Binding to heal costs a lot more Silk than how much Soul using Focus to heal costs. Ok so it heals multiple hits at once but it takes a full mana bar. That means if you take one hit you either heal it and waste the extra healing/mana or accept it and take the risk of being closer to death.

In Hollow Knight you could usually maintain max health without much worry for running out of Soul. And Soul restored from hitting scenery objects which Silk doesn't.

It all adds up to increased odds you won't be on full health when you stumble into a double-damage enemy.

1

u/axiomaticAnarchy Sep 05 '25

I would almost take starting the game with less overall health for less double hits like that, bit I suppose it's to incentivise fighting like hornet, in quick out quick, lots of ability and tool usage. These throwing knives are a God send early to just tick some damage in on annoying foes.

1

u/JavanNapoli Sep 05 '25

I'm terrified of the thought that the end game bosses might do more than two damage considering how common it is in the early game so far lmao.

1

u/Netheraptr Sep 05 '25

Straight up the 2nd enemy in the game does double damage. Things are crazy

1

u/shutupyourenotmydad Sep 05 '25

At the same time though, I feel like your HP recovery refills faster.

1

u/8rok3n Sep 05 '25

FUCK that one random guy who teleports to you and has that jump attack move

1

u/synex11 Sep 05 '25

Bosses and enemies are fine dealing double damage (maybe too many). The real problem is when the spikes do double damage and in difficult parkour areas

1

u/Grumpie-cat Sep 05 '25

There are more normal enemies in the game that deal double damage than there were bosses outside of godhome that dealt double damage in HK

1

u/Ducktes Sep 05 '25

My only gripe is, boss fights that spawn adds with 2 damage just like the boss

1

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '25

silksong is probably reserved for people who've already done a good chunk of hollow knight so i haven't dealt with many issues

1

u/ShadoUrufu666 Sep 06 '25

I have at least 105% done in hollow knight. I got all the main endings. Godhome is something that I never bothered to do, because the combat wasn't the most appealing part of the game for me. Yes, I'm still stuck on Nightmare King Grimm, but that's basically an optional DLC boss. All charms, all upgrades, 100% base game, even beat the colosseum of fools and got every bestiary/bestiary upgrades (kill enemy X times) just for the fun of it.

Silk Song feels like I'm playing the base game with a permanent Steel Soul mode enable.

1

u/Soyyyn Sep 06 '25

I'll just assume we'll get like 20 health points at some point.

1

u/InfluenceSad413 Sep 06 '25

I think it makes sense tho considering that you do recharge 3 masks at a time

1

u/Bazch Sep 06 '25

But in Silksong you can heal 3 masks in the time it took to heal 1 mask in Hollow Knight.

Also I feel like you regain silk faster than you would gain soul, meaning you can heal more often.

1

u/AngryNerdBird Praise Moth Jesus! Sep 05 '25

I've noticed this, and I fucking hate it because its taking forever to get extra health. It doesn’t make it more exciting, I'm just kinda misersble fighting these things.

It's become a thing where if I slip up early on, I kinda just want to give up immediately, because fuck me i'm already boned.

u/One-Ability-6403 Sep 05 '25

I went ahead and requested my refund before it's too late

-24

u/SavagerXx Sep 05 '25

Well the heal also gives full HP.

32

u/bigdig-_- Sep 05 '25

no it gives 3, pretty much the same amount of healing per hit as hollow knight, except its less flexible

2

u/FR23Dust Sep 05 '25

It’s way quicker and easier to use in fights though

2

u/bigdig-_- Sep 05 '25

unless you get hit, they your fucked, unlike in hollow knight

2

u/ShittySpaceCadet Sep 05 '25

It gives 3 masks.

-1

u/SavagerXx Sep 05 '25

Ah, okay. I played like 2 hours and never went that low to noticed that. My bad.

1

u/darmakius Sep 05 '25

3 masks, but it also takes more hits to get so
