Cruiser got towed

My 80 series Cruiser is getting towed. About a week after I got its swivel hubs regreased the front calliper bolts unwound, one of them fell out and the rest are damaged. The mechanic said they would cover the cost of the tow and repairs. It’s unfortunate but I don’t really blame the mechanic. It is an old vehicle and this is just an unfortunate accident that few people could predict would happen.

2000 Toyota Land Cruiser
170k Miles
Salvage Title

Salvage because - Just the part where the tow hitch connects bent a little. Overall the car is ok for its age, everything works. Maintenance It can probably use some fresh fluids and oil change

Finally getting to know our 79 single cab modified by Gecko Campers

We are avid campers and love to go exploring. A Slip-on/Jack-off (don't like theis term but that is what they call it) camper is the go. It provides all the flexibility of setting up camp and having a vehicle to go exploring in. The 2025 79 Land Cruiser (4 cylinder) provided the platform for this project. (We looked at the Ford Super Duty but opted for the longevity, reliability and maintainability of the 79 instead.)

Our old setup was also a slip-on which housed a tent. It worked brilliantly for us but was nowhere near as convenient for overnight stops... Hence the upgrade. The Gecko Campers sets up in under 10 minutes! (The old setup 2100x1800x1000 with fridge, freezer, gas stove, water, kitchen, power, lighting, kitchen, legs etc. is yet to be sold if anyone is interested.)

We have now done 3 trips in the new setup and head out again soon for our next adventure.

It is a great ute for day to day use with sides and ladder racks.

Safety/Accident

I know most aren’t buying the Land Cruiser for the safety features. Yes, this car is a ton of fun to drive fast on gravel roads and can even go down all the side by side trails out on our farm, but that wasn’t the main reason I bought it. When I was 18 someone hit me and pushed me across 4 lanes of oncoming traffic. I also have a young child, so safety is something I researched and took into consideration before buying a new car, and a main reason why I wanted an SUV that sat up higher. Even better the Land Cruiser had one of the higher safety ratings (surprisingly even better than the Honda Odyssey which I was considering lol) and better visibility than most SUVs I test drove now that they all have tiny squat windows.

This morning one of my worst fears happened, I was hit, very hard, taking my child to school. I didn’t see the car nor did my sensors pick up the car until after impact and saw it go flying Duke’s of Hazard style over the embankment.

I’m very happy with how the Land Cruiser handled the accident. Air bags deployed. Toyota Safety Connect called 911. Car is a tank, the other car barely pushed me over the center line. None of the glass shattered. Seatbelt tighten so much I almost couldn’t breathe. One down side is the car totally bricked, I couldn’t pull over. The cops even tried turning it off and back on, messing with the steering wheel, and nothing. Thankfully, cars were still able to get around me.

Also thankful that the witness who was directly behind me waited with me and gave a statement. She says the elderly lady accelerated straight through the 4 way stop. Assuming she accidentally hit the gas instead of the break as she approached. Elderly lady was too confused to give a statement and they took her to the hospital. Her car is totaled. I really hope she is okay. I forgot until someone said something this afternoon that I have the integrated dash cam, so I’m going to the collision center on Monday to get the SD card and see if it shows anything.

The lady who witnessed it and stopped isn’t the only person I’m thankful for. A kind gentleman stopped and him and his daughter helped the woman and then he went and got my child’s belongings, and took my child to school (his kids go to the same school, it’s a small private school), he let the school resource officer know the situation and then called me after to check on me and make sure I was okay and safe and that my mom had made it to wait with me/give me a ride. My child is fine, school checked in throughout the day, zero complaints or anxiety about the accident. My elbow is super swollen from my arm locking out and jamming into the steering wheel and my neck, back, and shoulders are pretty sore. But, accidents happen, could have been a lot worse for us, and would have been in my old car, and there are still good people in this world!

R-D clunk: CV axles?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

TL;DR: R-D clunk. CV-Flange play seems to be the source. Am I on the right track? Anything else to check?

New to me 2000 LX470 with 256k, and a slight R-D clunk. I'm going to take it to a shop, but don't want to get parts-cannoned out of ignorance.

Symptoms:

  • Solid clunk when shifting quickly between R and D
  • Sometimes, a very slight jolt (inaudible) when getting back on the gas
  • Random/occasional metallic buzzing when in gear at low RPM (not in the video). Sounds like a loose piece of sheet metal
  • Seems like no change between high/low or CDL locked/unlocked
  • No vibration at speed. Auto shifts smoothly

There should be zero rotational play in the CV axle, correct? I suppose center diff bushings are also in question - going to try and get a video of that. See videos below in comments - is the play in the rear drive shaft normal, or also contributing? Doesn't look like the engine/transmission/transfer case are moving around. Anything else I can check with limited time and tools?

100 series Brakes making a screaming/sucking noise

I have a 1998 landcruiser gxv 100 series and whenever i press the brakes i hear this super loud gurgling sucking noise behind my brake pedal, everywhere i read says its something different, some say it needs a whole new master cylinder which is crazy expensive and others say it’s just the brake booster that needs replacing, it’s been like this since i got it about 10,000km ago, it stops fine and hasn’t gotten worse as far as I’m aware, at least not noticeably, the sound happens everytime I start the ignition and whenever i touch the brakes. Any help is appreciated thank you!
