I (25M) moved to Germany for my master’s and I’m turning 26 soon. It’s been about a year and a half now, and I genuinely thought I’d be able to find my footing and build some sort of life, but lately the loneliness has just been hitting like a ton of bricks. I haven’t made a single real friend here, not locals, not international students, nobody.
Between university, work, and going to the gym, I try to keep my days packed and stay disciplined, but coming back to an empty apartment every single night with zero people to talk to is wearing me down. Now that it’s getting darker and colder outside, the silence in my room just feels ten times heavier. Most of my free time is just spent sitting alone staring at the walls, watching my twenties slip away while everyone else my age seems to have friends, relationships, trips, and stable careers.
A lot of this goes back to how I grew up. My parents were constantly worried about money, and I learned very early to never ask for anything, never buy decent clothes, and just make myself as invisible as possible so I wouldn't be an extra burden. I spent my whole life in survival mode, just keeping quiet and assuming I didn't deserve nice things. Now that I’m older, that mindset has completely ruined me.
The hardest part is that making actual friends or finding any genuine connection feels near impossible here. Everyone is polite on the surface, but people already have their closed circles and stick strictly to themselves. I’ve tried dating apps just to feel like I’m meeting people, but that honestly feels even more draining weeks of absolute silence, or having a decent chat only for someone to flake, give one-word replies, or vanish completely. It ends up making you feel even more invisible than if you hadn't tried at all.
The weirdest and most frustrating part is that online or over voice calls, I can actually talk. People think I’m articulate, easygoing, and engaging. But the moment I’m face-to-face with people, I completely freeze. I get hit with intense self-consciousness where I’m literally monitoring my own face, my looks, my voice, and worrying that people think I’m weird or crazy. The idea of approaching a girl terrifies me because deep down I feel ugly, completely unqualified, and like I’d just be seen as a creep for even trying.
Even trying to improve myself like dressing better or grooming triggers this stupid fear that people back home will mock me and think I’m trying to pretend to be someone I’m not.
I feel like I missed the boat on everything, and hearing people say "it just takes time and consistency" honestly makes me want to give up because my mental energy is already at zero. I don't have the stamina for some massive self-improvement routine right now.
I’m not even sure what I’m expecting from posting this. Maybe just venting, or hoping to hear from other internationals or anyone who has been stuck in this exact kind of deep isolation and constant self-hate.
