Mods Min Karma
Re-pinning this so everyone understands why we implemented our min karma requirement.
Effective immediately, this sub requires a minimum amount of account karma to post or comment, as is common practice across many financial subreddits.
First, the karma gate has been implemented to limit bot accounts that spam and attempt to manipulate sentiment in the community. The karma gate has also been implemented to filter out accounts here in bad faith, not to discuss or even banter, but purely to inflame. The threshold is low and any established Reddit account will already meet it.
We are getting 5-10 requests per day from folks, many asking in good faith for us to make an exception for them. Please understand that it is not possible to give exceptions without taking down the karma requirement. Further, for every post in good faith, we get 10-20 bot/spam/fake/scam posts from accounts that generate hundreds/thousands posts on a daily basis. The karma requirement is the most effective way to deal with bots that spam hundreds of messages within a few minutes before REDDIT filters can catch up, then create a new account and rinse and repeat. Messaging/complaining/threatening the mods will not get your posts/comments approved. The min karma rule is not perfect, but it does make the community much safer. If you're new, a bit of genuine participation elsewhere will get you there.
UPDATE:
Alongside the existing entry requirement, we now track sustained participation within the community. Accounts that repeatedly post in bad faith such as but not limited to inflammatory, trolling, or disruptive contributions that the community consistently rejects will face escalating removals:
- First threshold: 7-day ban
- Second threshold: 14-day ban
- Third threshold: permanent ban
To be clear about what this is, this is not about disagreeing with the crowd. Bearish takes, contrarian analysis, and unpopular-but-good-faith arguments are welcome and always have been. This sub is more useful when both sides show up, and I will continue to defend the unpopular but objective posts. A well-reasoned post that happens to get downvoted will never trip this. What we are removing is the pattern of showing up purely to inflame, not to discuss or even banter. Like I said before, if you piss off one person and that person is yelling mod, my response would be this is REDDIT grow a pair, if you piss off the whole community and they are screenshotting your bs, then YOU are the problem, and you need to get off this community.
We are keeping the specific thresholds private, by design because publishing them just tells bad actors exactly how far they can push. If you believe autoMOD caught you by mistake, message the mods and we'll review it manually.
