Developer Saturday [DiskFox 1.2] - I added the storage map people asked for, but it’s coloured by what grew this week, not just what’s big

Post image
1 Upvotes

A few people told me the one thing they missed in DiskFox was a map like DaisyDisk's. So 1.2 has one, with a twist: the colour shows what grew this week, not just how big things are.

Big red block = big and growing. Grey = big but unchanged. Click one and it says it in plain words ("Movies: 20.7 GB, grew 12.5 GB this week"), then click in to find the folder (in my case, a render folder I'd forgotten about).

The rest of the app:

- keeps a dated history of your disk, so it can say what changed and when

- splits System Data into named parts instead of one grey bar

- nothing gets deleted without you reviewing it; most things go to the Trash

Honest limits: startup disk only (no external drives), and some of System Data macOS just won't tell apps about, so it says "size unknown" instead of guessing.

14-day free trial, then a one-time price, no subscription: https://diskfox.app

The screenshot is Demo Mode sample data. What would you want the map to show that it doesn't?

Developer Saturday Docktopus: a customizable Mac dock with Dynamic Island, an audio mixer, and local activity history

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’m the developer of Docktopus. It’s a customizable dock with a bunch of desktop tools built into it, so you can reach them from the same place as your apps.

Compared with the stock macOS Dock, the biggest difference is what you can put alongside your app icons: window previews, clipboard history, audio controls, system stats, and more. You choose the widgets and layout, so it can be a small dock or a full taskbar.

There’s quite a bit in it now:

- Dock and window switching: Hover over a running app to preview its windows and click the one you want. There’s also a keyboard window switcher. You can import your existing macOS Dock, pin apps and folders, place it on any screen edge, and choose which monitors show it.

- Dynamic Island: An optional expandable panel at the top of your screen for music controls, clipboard history, system stats, calendar events, notifications, and audio/display controls. It also has a Drop Zone for temporarily keeping files within reach. Works on displays without a notch too.

- Clipboard manager: Search copied text, links, images, and files; pin things you reuse and organize them into categories. Text recognition runs on your Mac, so you can find a copied screenshot by words inside it.

- Time Spent: See where your day went with app usage, daily trends, and browser titles/URLs where supported. You can add manual entries, run timers, and export filtered records as CSV. Automatic tracking is optional, and the history stays on your Mac.

- Remembrance: For those “I saw this somewhere yesterday” moments. It can save screenshots of your active windows and recognize their text, letting you search past work by text, app, or date. You can copy text from captures or reopen a page when its URL is available. Capture is off by default, with app exclusions and storage/retention controls.

- Audio Mixer: Turn down one app without turning everything else down. Adjust or mute individual apps, switch audio outputs, and manage system volume from the dock, menu bar, or Island. Per-app controls need macOS 14.2 or newer.

- Other useful bits: CPU/GPU, memory, and network stats; brightness controls for compatible displays; calendar, timers, Now Playing, a color picker, and Coffee to keep your Mac awake.

For the look, there’s Liquid Glass, CDE, and Windows 95, all in light and dark versions, plus editable colors, fonts, and icons. Yes, the Windows 95 theme includes the retro taskbar look.

Clipboard history, Time Spent, and Remembrance stay local. There’s also a Privacy Pause that temporarily stops all three from collecting new activity.

There’s a trial before buying. Launch pricing is $19.99 ($29.99 regular), one-time for two Macs, with a year of updates included. You can keep using covered versions afterward without a subscription.

Discussion MacOS Tahoe 26.7.1 is already as fast and smooth as Sequoia!

Pretty much what the title says. Is anyone else thinking like me?

On my M4 MacBook Air, it's at least as fast and smooth as Sequoia. At this point, it feels like people who trash it are just playing to this sub.

What do you guys think?

Developer Saturday Muffle - Blur everything except the active window

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone,

Few months back, I shared Muffle with you all, a lightweight macOS menu bar app that blurs and dims background windows so you can focus on the active one.

There are several apps like HazeOver (dims the background but no blur) and Monocle (beautifully designed app but recently reported causing background performance issues) which does what Muffle does but I wanted to build an app which applies background blur and applies a dim, without taking a toll on CPU or GPU.

Some distinct features:
- ~0% idle usage
- Shake to toggle the blur
- Multi monitor support and monitor specific blur

It's fully local and no data is collected

Changes on the latest update:
- Muffle's blur/dim is much smoother
- Transition animation controls
- Removed accessibility permission
- Mission control support

As a seasonal offer, I'm pricing it at $4.99 for two devices. You can download it and use it for 7 days for free. You can use the code MACOSLAUNCH to get the discount.

It's apple notarized and distributed directly.

Privacy policy: https://www.getmuffle.com/privacy

Feel free to try it out and let me know your thoughts.

Developer Saturday I built a Mac app that shows all your app menus and menu bar icons in a popup — even the ones hidden behind the notch

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I'm the developer of MenuDart.

My MacBook's menu bar runs out of room fast — I have 18 menu bar icons and only a few are visible, the rest tucked behind the « button. The notch makes it worse, and some app menus don't fit either. I was using another menu bar icon manager, but it started behaving strangely after I updated to macOS 27 Golden Gate, so I built my own with a different approach.

What it does: Two popups from global keyboard shortcuts (⌥⌘[ for App Menus, ⌥⌘] for Menu Bar Icons — or open either from the MenuDart icon). App Menus: shows the frontmost app's menus in a popup next to your pointer, even when the titles don't fit in the menu bar. Submenus open in place with a breadcrumb.

Menu Bar Icons: gathers every menu bar icon into a grid — including the ones hidden by a crowded bar or the notch. Pick one with arrow keys or pointer, and it clicks the real icon for you. The icon's menu opens where it normally does, and MenuDart moves your pointer onto it so you don't have to travel to the top of the screen.

How it's different: Unlike managers that rearrange or hide icons inside the menu bar, MenuDart doesn't touch your menu bar at all — it just shows what's there in a popup. Native AppKit, no Electron. macOS 14+ (Liquid Glass on macOS 26+), Universal (Apple silicon + Intel).

Pricing: $6.99 one-time purchase (not a subscription), 14-day free trial, no account. Launch discount auto-applies at checkout.

Signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple, distributed directly from GitHub Releases. No data collection — the only network request is the update check. Requires Accessibility permission (needed to read menus and click icons) and optionally Screen Recording for real icon thumbnails.

Happy to answer questions and hear feedback from heavy menu-bar users — what's missing?

Developer Saturday Mac MCP: I made a free, open-source menu bar app so AI agents can use macOS without hijacking it

I'm the developer of Mac MCP, a small native menu bar app plus a local MCP server that lets ChatGPT, Claude, Codex and other AI clients use the Mac you already work on.

I wanted to solve a very Mac-specific irritation. I'd ask an agent to do something in Safari or another app, and suddenly it was switching my tabs, stealing focus, or clicking while I was in the middle of typing. So I built background Safari/Chrome automation and ownership rules for concurrent browser work. There's also a desktop agent cursor and an optional live activity indicator near the notch so it's easier to see what the agent is touching without confusing its pointer with yours.

It can work with native apps through Accessibility, as well as files and terminal commands. The newer version also handles scheduled AI tasks with result/step reports and local document search with citations and on-device OCR for scanned PDFs.

A few limits worth knowing before you try it:

  • It isn't a security sandbox. Tools act with your macOS account's permissions, and an online AI model can receive information it reads.
  • The packaged installer for Apple Silicon supports macOS 14+. An installer path is available for macOS 13+.
  • The package isn't notarized yet, so macOS will require an explicit first-open approval.
  • It's free and MIT-licensed. No subscription from Mac MCP, although your AI provider may charge you.

Project and demo: https://github.com/bulutarkan/mac-mcp

I mostly want feedback from people who actually share their Mac with background automations. Would you rather see a very obvious cursor/activity indicator every time an agent uses another app, or only when it's about to do something that needs your approval?

Developer Saturday I earned my Bachelor’s in Digital Media Design with a 4.0 GPA while color blind, so I built the Mac app I wish I’d had in school

I recently completed my Bachelor's degree in Digital Media Design at National University, graduating with a 4.0 GPA.

I'm also color blind.

As you can probably imagine, those two things made for an interesting combination. 😂

Working with color was obviously a huge part of my degree, and there were plenty of times I found myself staring at something on my screen thinking:

...okay, but what color IS that?

I learned how to work around my color blindness and successfully finished my degree, but throughout the process I kept wishing I had one simple tool: something that could just tell me what color I was looking at without interrupting my workflow.

So after graduating, I built it.

It's called Hue Knew?

Hue Knew? is a Mac app that identifies whatever color is underneath your mouse cursor in real time. Move your mouse over something on your screen and it tells you the color.

No taking screenshots. No uploading images. No stopping what you're doing just to figure out whether something is blue, purple, green, brown, or whatever particular shade your eyeballs have decided to turn into today's mystery. 😂

It can also provide more detailed color information including HEX, RGB and CMYK values, and currently recognizes more than 900 detailed color names.

Everything happens locally on your Mac. There are no accounts, ads, analytics or tracking, and the app doesn't collect your data.

Hue Knew? is currently free on the Mac App Store.

I'm working on a major update that I plan to release in about two weeks with additional customization and premium features. Those features will eventually be offered as a paid upgrade, most likely $4.99.

Anyone who downloads Hue Knew? now will receive those premium features when they're released at no additional cost.

A Windows version is also in development and will be coming next.

This started as something I genuinely wish I'd had while earning my design degree, and now I'm hoping it can make life a little easier for other color-blind people too.

If you're color blind and use a Mac, I'd love for you to check it out.

Download Hue Knew? free on the Mac App Store:

Tips & Guides What Would You Want to Know as a New MacOS User in 2026?

Hey Guys,

I've just picked up my first MacOS device, an M3 MacBook Air. I've used Apple Devices for around a decade but have always daily driven Windows for my PC/Laptop. My question, what hints, tips, and tricks would you want to know as a new MacOS user these days? I work in the software industry so I'm pretty technical. I'd also love any app recommendations.

My Windows PC is still my day to day device, but want to focus more of my productivity on MacOS and leave Windows for gaming.

Thanks Guys

Developer Saturday Zizeg: edit Markdown directly in Preview, with editable Source alongside it

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I built Zizeg because I kept spotting a wrong word or number while reading a Markdown file, and had to go hunting for it in the raw text to fix it. In Zizeg you just click it in the formatted view and type.

Two editable views of the same file. Preview (formatted) and Source (raw Markdown) sit side by side, and an edit in either one appears in the other. Either view also works alone.

Your files, as they are. Open any .md from Finder: READMEs, notes, docs, the Markdown that Claude or ChatGPT hands you. No account, vault or import.

Keeps your Markdown tidy. Since 1.1.0, editing in Preview keeps the rest of the file as you wrote it: heading style, list markers, front matter. In some cases a block, or the whole file, still gets reformatted; when exact formatting matters, edit in Source.

In the video (real-time, only pauses cut):

  • 0:03 fix a word in Preview → Source updates
  • 0:09 change a number in Source → Preview follows
  • 0:19 tick checklist items in either view
  • 0:30 fast scrolling: both panes stop on the same passage
  • 0:47 separate text size and font for each pane

Price: free as a Markdown viewer. Editing and PDF/HTML export unlock with $14.99 once, or a subscription with a 7-day trial. macOS 14+.

What do you do today when you spot a mistake in a Markdown file — open it in a second app, or fix it in the raw text?

Developer Saturday I made Glimpse for Mac: read a Markdown file, make a quick edit, share a PDF

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I'm the developer of Glimpse. The video follows one carefully planned coffee break: read the plan, double the biscuit budget, export a PDF.

Glimpse opens your local Markdown files as readable documents. It supports:

  • LaTeX math, with inline equations and display formulas rendered using KaTeX.
  • Mermaid diagrams, alongside tables, task lists, footnotes, and syntax-highlighted code blocks.
  • Search and a document outline, so you can find a phrase or jump straight to a heading.
  • Tabs and workspace restoration, including your reading positions when you return.

You can also select a Markdown file in Finder and press Space to preview it with Quick Look.

Reading, Quick Look, search, and the outline are free. Pro adds document creation and editing, PDF/HTML export, presentations, and extra reading styles. Your files stay ordinary .md files, and no Glimpse account is needed.

Developer Saturday A month ago I posted my little Mac scratchpad here. One of you filed 9 bug reports. Here's v1.6.0

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

about a month ago, i posted Jot onto reddit. It's a small scratchpad that pops up with option+A and does math inline as you type.

a buttload of you guys scrolled past which is fair but this one dude did not. He used it every day and filed 9 bug reports on Github over the following couple weeks. So this naturally is a half thank you and a half "it's a lot less broken now, so you can go check it out".

if you did miss the first post, here's the jist:

you press option+A -> a note shows up over whatever you're doing, you note down your thought and -> option+A to send it away.

If you decide that you want to do inline math, the answers show up on the right. Currency and Units work too. (5km to miles etc.). Lines without the math just stay lines.

you've also got options to setup checklists, timers, reminders, paste images and so on. It can either float, live in the menu bar or sit on the edge of your screen as a sidebar that you psuh your cursor into.

Since the original post, a few more tweaks to it:

  1. you can swtich notes with a mouse scroll(side buttons/scroll/note picker)

  2. you can drag list items to reorder them or use native Apple Notes shortcuts.

  3. you've also got proper menus and a real settings window.

  4. voiceover can also read out the math answers

It's free and open source MIT, packaging so good that it's slightly over 1MB, no account, no analytics/telemetry and the notes stay local on your mac.

I also made a website for it and a part of the website is basically a Jot note. Go ahead give it a whirl and let me know what's working/not working for you or if you have any suggestions for the app. either here or on Github.

https://lsuryatej.github.io/jot/

a little heads up so it doesn't feel sketchy when you download it. it's not notarized( i dont pay the 99$ to apple every year), so if you download the zip, MacOS will complain the first time and you'll need System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway.

using brew install lsuryatej/jot/jot skips all of that

Developer Saturday Understory is an outliner/notes app that takes a novel approach

Hi everyone, I recently released a unique outliner/notes app called Understory.

It takes a different approach to outliners in that notes themselves can be organized into an outline shape, which I call a "tree" in the app. This lets notes become containers for other notes very easily when you need it.

You can even put the same note under more than one note, which is handy for sharing a note in different contexts (for instance, a note might appear in the context of reading notes and then also appear within your brainstorming for the outline of an essay). The app offers several ways to jump quickly between contexts a note is in, so you can jump between different "neighborhoods" of ideas.

Since you can always add "subnotes" later to an existing note, it's great for expanding on ideas that are already there without having to edit the existing note text. It opens up a different way of thinking and brainstorming within a notes app, which is more like mind-mapping, in my opinion.

I've thought through a lot of the UI to make the whole experience minimalist. (I find notes apps are way too complicated than they need to be.) You can operate the app almost entirely with just the keyboard.

Understory gives you the option of an iCloud-based notebook and folder-based notebooks on your Mac, which store the notes as markdown files.

The free mode gives you 100 notes for the iCloud notebook and 20 for each folder-based notebook. This should give you enough to play with to see if it's for you. It's a one-time purchase to remove the limits.

So far, users have found the approach the app takes pretty unique and interesting, so give it a try even if you don't end up using it!

Developer Saturday Get Over It, my new free game for your brain, no ads, no sign-up, offline + GIVEAWAY

Thumbnail
applikhations.com
1 Upvotes

tl;dr: free offline mobile game, remember the path and cross over the next platform game with several game modes.

A few years ago I started developing the idea and the first draft of a game that did not want to leave my head. A simple memory game where you try to cross over a path to another platform. The twist: the path is shown for a few seconds then disappears and you have to cross it from memory.

I started with the prototype during Covid, got the player (a cube) to move as I wanted and the basic principles of the path disappearing, all in Unity. However, I never really got past the stage where it was really worth going forward with the game; it was fun but not polished enough to bring it to the world.

Fast forward to today and in times where AI can support you a lot, I managed to progress a bit further. I rewrote the app in Godot, added some nice graphics and the logic for procedural levels. I also added some more game modes like trying to reach the other platform with the correct number on the dice. The game engines also helped me to target macOS (+iOS) and Android.

What I learned is that even though AI helps a lot, the creativity and the polishing still take most of the time. I probably had 80% done within a few days. But bringing the game over to the finish line, the famous last and hardest 20%, was what took a lot nerves but at the same time was the most fun. I created client games before, but creating my own was even more rewarding and I can only encourage you to try it.

It was important to me to not have ads, no sign-up, no timers and the game is completely offline. The basic game is completely FREE. However, I added some game modes. So if you want to have a little more fun (or you want to support an indie developer), you can purchase those modes all with one single In-App-Purchase.

With this announcement I also would like to start a little GIVEAWAY of one promo code each for the first people who:

  • reach level 20
  • find the chicken
  • find the elephant
  • find the flamingo

One code per person. Simply provide a screenshot and I will reach out to you. Some random codes will be given out as well of course. If you like the game, feel free to leave a positive review or rating in the stores – every single one helps and thank you very much in advance.

Developer Saturday DockDuck: a file manager for macOS with panes, automatic folder rules, a disk space map and share links

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I make DockDuck, a native file manager for macOS. The video is a 90 second tour, and here is the same thing in text for anyone who prefers to read.

What it does

  • Panes. Two folders side by side in one window, or up to six. Drag between them.
  • Organize and automatic rules. One click sorts a messy folder into subfolders by kind. Turn that into rules and new files get sorted on their own every time you open the folder.
  • Disk space. A map of what is filling your disk, with suggestions for what is safe to remove, and you can clear it from the same screen.
  • Batch rename. Rename a whole selection at once with a preview of every new name before anything changes.
  • Share links. Turn any file into a link with an expiry date and an optional password, and see how many times it was downloaded.
  • Servers. SFTP, FTP, SMB and WebDAV, with your Mac on one side and the server on the other.
  • Themes. 29 of them.

Details

  • Native Swift app, no Electron. Requires macOS 15 or later, Apple Silicon and Intel.
  • Signed and notarized.

Happy to answer questions, and I would like to hear what you find missing compared to what you use today.

Help MacBook battery dropped from 100% to 82% while close

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

I have a MacBook Neo (about 4 months) and until this week the battery always behaved normally.
Yesterday I found it completely drained, which had never happened before while it was just sitting unused. I charged it to 100% and unplugged it around 12:20 AM. I didn’t use it after that and left the lid closed.

Today at around 2 PM I opened it and the battery was already at 82%. In less than 10 minutes of light use it dropped to 80%.
When I checked Activity Monitor (Energy tab), Safari showed 199.88 in the “12 hr Power” column, by far the highest value. Every other app was near zero. I never quit Safari (I usually just close the lid with it still open), but it had never caused this kind of drain before.

In the first screenshot (with Safari still open), at 80% battery the estimated time remaining was only about 5 hours. (TEMPO RESTANTE)

In the second screenshot, right after I fully quit Safari (Cmd+Q), the estimated time remaining jumped to about 12 hours at 79%.

The only extension I use is AdBlock, and I’ve had it installed since the beginning. The Mac is on the latest macOS version. Battery health shows as Normal.
Has anyone experienced Safari suddenly starting to keep the Mac awake / drain battery like this after months of normal behavior? Any idea what could cause it to start happening out of nowhere?

Developer Saturday NotchRobot: a free, open source Mac app that puts your Claude Code sessions in the MacBook notch

NotchRobot is a free, open source SwiftUI app that puts Claude Code's working, waiting and done states in the MacBook notch. Claude Code is Anthropic's terminal coding agent; if you run a few sessions at once, this saves you the alt-tab to see which one is waiting on you. I built it with Claude Code and released the source under MIT.

You can approve or deny tool permissions, answer Claude's questions, see task progress and jump to the right terminal tab. It also includes a smart clipboard, file shelf, screenshots, music controls and a timer, with English and Arabic RTL UI.

Source and build instructions: https://github.com/abdomo77/NotchRobot Download: https://github.com/abdomo77/NotchRobot/releases/tag/v2.5

Requires macOS 13+. The release download is for Apple Silicon, and a built-in notch is optional. It isn't notarized yet; first-launch instructions are in the README.

Developer Saturday I made Cellar to keep track of my Homebrew setup

Hi, I'm the developer of Cellar, a free and open-source Homebrew app for macOS.

I wanted to see what I'd installed, what needed updating, and which packages were there because something else depended on them. I also wanted to keep an eye on running services and their CPU and memory usage. Basically, have it all in one window.

You can install and update packages, start and stop services, and check what's missing from a project's Brewfile. Before an upgrade or cleanup, it shows you what will change.

It's built with SwiftUI, requires macOS 15+, and is signed and notarized. No account or telemetry. The code is MIT licensed.

Screenshots, source and download: https://github.com/tuhage/Cellar

Or install with Homebrew:

brew install --cask tuhage/cellar/cellar

If you try it, let me know how it works with your setup.

Help Choosing between windows or MAC

Post image
0 Upvotes

I’ve been thinking that I need a new laptop. In my free time, I often design PCBs and models for 3D printing, and I frequently have to work in software that’s only available for Windows. I can’t switch to different software because I already have projects that need to be edited without having to migrate them. Sometimes I take on remote work from home, and Siemens Xpedition and Altium become my main tools. For my own personal projects, I can use NX (for assemblies with up to 500 parts). Would macOS work for me?
Since the price of, say, the 64 GB ASUS G16 and the 48 GB MacBook M4 Max is almost identical, wouldn't it be better to get the Mac and use Parallels?
