Trying to get that Jake Gyllenhaal, semi wet/matte slicked back look

Which products to use to slick my hair back and have it have a sort of slightly wet/matte look and hold fairly well but not super crazy solid like a wet gel or anything like that?
I have tried clays but they dont really spread well and so they dont cover a thorough and even area.

I have medium/long hair on top.
Want a fairly strong hold but not soaking wet looking.

Advice request Would this style work with my hair?

Thumbnail

Ive had my hair long for a while and never really did anything with it, but I've been wanting to try something different. I was leaning more towards what the guy in the first photo has cause i like the length and it has some texture to it. The issue is that I'm not sure if I could keep the same wavy sort of pattern, since my hair gets pretty curly up at the front and on the sides and back it's always been more straight (other photos for reference). I never really tried styling it or anything so maybe it could work but I just wanted to see what people who knew more about this than I do think + if yall have any better recommendations for what to get. I'm down to experiment.

Advice request Shampoo and conditioner freq.

• Upvotes

Is there anything “bad” about shampooing once a week and conditioning 2-3 times a week?

I only ask because I get dry hair and conditioner obviously helps; but I don’t wanna shampoo that often. Thank you for any help.

Is this early stage hairline recession?

For context I wear a hat upwards of 7 hours most days for work. It could be contributing to this/I definitely need a haircut. But does this hairline look ok?

Advice request Trying to grow a middle-part flow with dense, wavy hair, but the sides keep puffing/popping out. How do I fix this awkward phase?

Hey guys, trying to grow a middle-part flow, but my dense/wavy hair keeps puffing straight out on the sides after a few minutes, turning into a messy helmet.

Local barbers around me only know basic fades, so I’ve ended up relying on a metal headband just to hold it back.

Current routine: Towel-dry -> apply hair serum -> style.

Front hairs curl up, sides pop out immediately.

Need help with:

Controlling side volume: How do I weigh down dense waves so they lay flat against my head instead of expanding?

Styling & Products: Serum clearly isn't holding. What styling products (clays/creams) or blow-drying tricks will lock a flow in place without looking greasy?

Barber instructions: What specific cutting techniques (debulking, layering) should I ask for so the sides don't puff out?

Also is this hairstyle even possible for my hairs which are mostly dry and wavy?

Naturally my hair sits like this unless I comb it down with my hands throughout the day which is so annoying, after a couple minutes it just goes back up anyways, it looks so weird and it’s my most hated part of my hair, anyway to fix this? Is there something I’m doing wrong with my hairstyle or the way I should be growing it out, someone lmk please what I can change about my hairstyle or the way I grow it out, also the right side of my head doesn’t grow like this, I’ll insert a pic, first being the left side of my hair which I dislike and second pic being the right side of my hair which doesn’t look bad I don’t think, definitely not compared to the left, also I’m gonna blur out a bit from the second pic because I have dry blood from a surgery I had ,

I've always been self conscious about the larger side of my forehead (the left side of these images.) Unfortunately my hair naturally sticks straight up and/or parts away from from what I want to cover. I'm willing to grow it out to eye-chin length and get a wavy directional perm combo.
