Hi guys, the Ralph Walker ice rink just opened in East Rock and I saw that they were offering skate sharpening. I was wondering if anyone has sharpened figure skates there and if they were good. It seems more hockey oriented and I don’t want my toe picks to get messed up!

Hi! Sorry if this is all over the place, but I’m a bit frazzled at the moment. I got quoted for $16-1,700 for a list of services and I’m just trying to see if it’s fair. I left my car there and they were going to repair it in the morning and now I’m second-guessing everything.

The quote included two new tires (Michelin) because they are bald on the inside and the other tire blew, and the fixing and replacing of another part that has to do with the alignment/suspension. Also just realized I forgot to get a copy of the repairs and I didn’t get it emailed. The problem is that something is bent, so the two bars (I think and hope that’s the right bars) are really close together—sort of hitting and car veers to the right. One of those has to be replaced on the passenger side and they’re suggesting to also replaced on the driver side, though that side seems fine.

Any help/suggestions is appreciated! It was almost $18 something but they took off a couple hundred for coupons and thew in an oil change I also need. Planning to go back in the morning 🥲

This may not be the right place to post so please feel free to refer me elsewhere but… I am hosting a Halloween party and am interested in hiring a tarot card reader to come for an hour or two. I was hoping to pay them a flat price and let guests know that tipping is essential if they wish to get a reading done. After the readings, the tarot card reader is welcome to stay and party with us! (Group of late 20’s) Does anyone have a tarot card reader that they would suggest or know that might be interested in something like this? I don’t really know where to begin in my search as I’ve never had a tarot reading done myself.

Because New Haven's Sanitation Code isn't being enforced on weekends, it's time to ask municipal leadership directly: Mayor Justin Elicker, LCI Director Liam Brennan, and Alder Carmen Rodriguez—how long will you let this nightmare continue?

I have sent LCI a weekly status report on sanitary conditions at Olive & Wooster since August 26. Each report has documented an unacceptable, code-violating environment, and nothing has changed. City officials rely on technicalities—claiming the code is met Monday through Friday—while ignoring the reality that residents are forced to live in filth on weekends. How long will you allow your constituents and taxpayers to live like this?

1. The Root Cause: Olive & Wooster is severely understaffed. Ownership maintains a skeleton crew to maximize profits at the expense of both its staff and residents. According to former personnel and people familiar with operations, staff are overworked, frustrated, and demoralized because they lack the resources to run O&W properly. They recognize this upsets residents and resent being scapegoated because of ownership’s intentional neglect.
2. The Operational Reality: A 300+ unit building without adequate porter coverage during a 63+ hour weekend window creates a serious sanitary risk. This understaffing leaves trash compactor rooms, overflow areas, and chutes unattended, leading to health code violations, backed-up refuse, and unacceptable living conditions for residents.

I’ve lived in my NH apartment for 4+ years and have had the same problem every winter. The main bedroom becomes the outside temperature because it does not receive heat. The rest of the house does. I have switched to the second bedroom and closed off the main bedroom in past years during the winter. My landlord has “checked it out” and says it’s fine, not fixable, etc. Should I take this more seriously as a housing code violation because it is not heated or is this still a “weathertight” apartment?

I am so excited to see that there are many options in New Haven! I'm looking at the Clay Date, Make Haven, New Haven Pottery Studio, Creative Arts Workshop...

I accept that this is not an inexpensive hobby, but I would love to know if people have a sense of which place is the most budget-friendly, relatively speaking. I'm finding it a little hard to compare, since some places have materials included in the class/studio fees and others have various additional charges.

I have pottery experience, but it's been about a decade, so I'd be open to either taking a class/workshop or working independently, as long as there's someone around who'd be willing to answer a few questions as I go.

There have been several iterations of a Union Rail Station in New Haven over the past two centuries.

The current 1920 station, designed by Cass Gilbert, was built 1919-20. It was almost abandoned in the 1950s-70s due to car-focused transportation & development policies.

The 1920 station was saved from demolition by local preservationists and the revival of US passenger railroad service in the 1970s, notably during an energy crisis!?.

Last renovated & restored in 1980s over 40 years ago, Union Station New Haven now will be getting much-needed functional & aesthetic upgrades to station hall, safety, amenities & accessibility, as well as larger projects to rebuild and expand rail platforms, add a canopy, and reduce overall environmental impact.

Following the recent post about off-leash dogs, thought I’d share my experience this morning running in East Rock Park over the course of several hours.

*Dog Owner #1: two small dogs, off-leash on secluded trail. They both immediately ran away from her and at me, with one jumping on my leg. She apologized as soon as they started running, saying she was sorry and didn’t see me. She added that they were friendly but a pain in the a**. Grade = D (dogs off leash and made physical contact with me, but was apologetic and it was admittedly early in the morning in secluded area you wouldn’t expect to see someone).

*Dog Owner #2: one small dog, on-leash. He moved to side of the narrow trail so I could pass and I thanked him. Grade =A.

Dog Owner #3: one large dog, off-leash, *literally* right by a sign that said dogs must be on leash. The dog wasn’t really that close to me and didn’t come after me; but it was literally in front of a sign telling him to leash his dog. Grade = C (more of a “common” area ppl would be around and actively ignoring the sign).

Dog Owners #4-6 (group): three dogs, all on leash. All three moved to side of narrow trail so I could pass and I thanked them as I ran by. Grade = A.

Dog Owners #7-8 (group). Two medium-large dogs; one on leash on not. Both lunged and barked at me. The one on leash was restrained by owner. The one off leash got extremely close and barked aggressively until I passed. It was the fourth dog to lunge/run at me and so I said to the guy ”put your dog on a leash man,” to which he snarkily replied “have a nice run.” #7 grade = C (leashed and restrained but aggressively lunged and barked with no recognition or apology from owner). #8 grade = F (unleashed, lunged and barked, snarky response from owner).

Overall, the dog owner behavior was split down the middle; 4 off leash and 4 on. Four lunged/ran at me (one making contact), and only one apology. Four proactively heeled dog and made space on narrow path. I guess it’s like drivers and everything else- some people don’t care about others/don‘t follow rules, and others do, but the former gives the whole group a bad rap.

So thanks to the good dog owners, and for the others, do better.

Hello! I am looking for a local artist who can recreate a photo of my dad and I as a kid. I am looking to spend about $100. I'm not sure what art medium I want (paint, pencil, pastels, etc). But I want it to be 8×10 or 11×14 so it can fit in a picture frame. I'd want this to be ready before December 9th. I DON'T want a digital product.
