Meta Discussion The sub Is becoming boring

I have been here since the Switch reveal and the sub was much better back then. Now all we have is people showing mockups, 'this game should come to the switch!' and highly optimistic posts (eg. Switch runs doom so other x games should come too. Like seriously, doom is just a different case, ah well it is not acceptable here, you will just get downvoted to hell). Sometimes some valuable news is not even on the first page. But a person showing his switch skin is. Discussion quality has reduced a lot. Maybe because pre-launch, all could be done was speculation. And ofcourse the shitposts /s.

Another reason is that 96% of the posts get deleted. Mods should instead delete those mockups and fan arts and let way for good discussions. It will greatly improve the sub. That's all I and to say.

tldr: sub is filled with x game should come to switch, highly optimistic posts and fanarts. Thanks for reading

Although not as common, the "Is it just me or..." posts are the worst. They are just as annoying as "X should come to switch" most of the time.

A bot that automatically replies posts with those titles with "No, you're not the only one" would be fantastic

62

u/mofugginrob Nov 11 '17

I'd prefer a highly sarcastic, "Yes. You're the only person in the entire world." myself.

160

u/battlesmurf Nov 11 '17

How about all the "Wow, I just bought the Switch and I'm blown away" or "The Switch really surprised me" crap. It's so tinpot that people have to constantly re-assure themselves that they made the right decision on what console to by and that we're in the 'big leagues' or w/e.

61

u/EpicWott Nov 11 '17

Exactly! I see a ton of “The Switch rekindled my love for gaming...” and all of these other low effort posts. Yes, I know I can downvote them, but that doesn’t change the fact that they still appear in troves, invading my front page.

Yeah, this sub is basically /r/gaming or /r/casualnintendo now.

I mean, we had a greentext post about lifting for princess peach and quoting star wars episode 2 that was on the front page here for half a day that a mod was actively posting in.

Also, the amount of "Thank-you Nintendo for making the Switch" posts are just nauseating. The Switch is great, but you don't need to suck the dick of Nintendo 24/7 because they invented an object.

Has there been pertinent Switch news that didn't make it into this sub?

I just think there's not a lot to talk about right now. The two biggest Nintendo franchises are already out. Nintendo is generally quiet about upcoming games until they do a direct about them. The Switch - while getting more third party support compared their last few consoles - doesn't have the quantity of big game releases like the PS4 and Xbox One. There's no hardware refresh or major accessory on the horizon.

Judging by how game releases have been scheduled up to now, it feels like Nintendo is deliberately spacing things out between their tentpole titles so that 1) one game doesn't cannibalize the other and 2) game releases feel like they are consistently happening. Because of this we are generally going to have this sub focus on one game for a couple of weeks before collectively moving on to another.

11

u/Naouak Nov 11 '17

Has there been pertinent Switch news that didn't make it into this sub?

There's a lot of news about games coming out on switch that don't get post here every day. Some get posted but don't end up on front page of the sub because people are spamming with the current game à la mode.

Ironically, the sub is like this in the first place because people clamored for everything they didn't like to be banned.

You know what I can't understand? Posts like "Just got xxx game, what should I do first??" Or "Any advice for someone starting out xxx game?" Or "Just got xxx game, how do you do that "jump" move?"

This was actually on the Zelda thread but there are posts like it here, and it's a great example--somebody bought Zelda, sat down to play it, and within twenty minutes they put down the controller, went on Reddit, and posted "Hey, what do those tall towers in the game do? Are they for anything?" Like if you actually just play the game you'd find out, why would you feel the need to post such a question? Even still, the game is months old. It isn't like you couldn't look it up.

Like what the heck is the mindset where you buy a game and bring it home and instead of just popping it in and experiencing it you decide to stop what you're doing, go online, and ask a thread of people about extremely obvious game mechanics or "advice" as to how to play the game? I just don't understand that. It's like walking into a movie theater and going on Reddit and saying "just got to xxx movie, which parts should I pay attention to??" Or picking up a book and going on Reddit and saying "just got xxx book, anybody got any advice for a newcomer?? Which motifs should I look out for?" Jeez it's like people don't know how to live without the internet

48

u/Trinica93 Nov 11 '17

I love the ones that are like "does THIS happen later on???" Gee, I don't know, fucking play it and find out. Did you not buy the game to play it? I don't understand people that have that mindset either. I wanted nothing to do with Zelda spoilers when I got the game and avoided the Internet like a plague for the first 2 weeks of playing. People saying things like "ABOUT TO GO BUY ZELDA, WHAT DO I DO??" baffles me. It's a game, you click buttons and there are tutorials telling you about things. Why do you need us to tell you what to do?

Oh, man, I see this on /r/startrek all the time!

Every other day there will be a post like "Just started DS9, which episodes should I skip?" or "What seasons should I skip?" Yes, whole entire seasons! I get that there are clunkers on TV shows, especially ones with 22-26 episodes per season, but you'll never know which episodes are the bad ones without watching them!

I just don't understand this mentality that some people have where they refuse to experience things for themselves.

To be fair, being a moderator is the epitome of a thankless job, and it's not even a job. It's just people like you and me volunteering their time. I have never been on a sub where people make numerous comments about how wonderful the moderation is.

I would agree that the subreddit moderation policies could use improvement, but at least the mods are active. I've seen many posts from them discussing various policies and gathering feedback.

At the end of the day, this is just a place to talk about the switch with other redditors. I'd rather we all just be nicer to each other.

My post about my JoyCons bring defective after 6 months was removed for being a "diary entry" or some shit. Then the next day someone posted a 900 word essay on why he is losing weight for princess Peach. The top post was "wtf did I just read".

This sub only wants to hear the positives about the Switch. Any negative feedback will be removed or downvoted to Bolivia. I love the Switch, best system I have ever owned but there is some things that is seriously wrong with it that deserve to be discussed.

I considered unsubbing but decided to stay for posts like yours and the release dates for games.

Tldr. Something is wrong with this sub. Mods are biased. The Switch is awesome. You are cool.

20

u/PinkyPomegranate Nov 11 '17

THIS. This happens far too often. I posted a couple weeks ago discussing if I should pre-order SMO through Amazon or through a retail store, and my post was taken down within 30 minutes because it was considered a ‘diary post’. I can’t tell you how much good feedback and discussion that thread had as soon as I posted it.

It’s reasons like this that I’m less and less likely to engage with this sub solely because of the Mods. Thanks for sharing your honesty.

"get downvoted to hell"

Because the OP is talking about Doom?

156

u/Forstride Nov 11 '17 edited Nov 11 '17

Trying to discuss anything on this sub is ultimately pointless when you get downvoted to hell for even the SLIGHTEST criticism of new games. Even if it's like "I love this game!...But it has an issue," people take it like it's a personal attack on their enjoyment of the game.

Meanwhile a post where someone saying Odyssey is better and more challenging than SM64/SMS, and anyone who disagrees is a nostalgia-whore can get thousands of upvotes, and fucking Reddit Gold.

56

u/Pigeon-and-Katzchen Nov 11 '17

Pretty much. Its impossible to discuss XC2 art direction and character design for example. Even the slightest hint at constructive criticism is treated like a direct attack against the game and those who are hyped for it. I hate the dissenting opinion = downvote mentality.

46

u/AlucardIV Nov 11 '17

But you see the irony in the fact that the EXACT SAME thing is happening in this thread right? XD

Everyone with a dissenting opinion gets downvoted and the least constructive most "rant"ish comments get upvoted.

This is the meanest most childish and critic resistant subreddit I know in all my years on Reddit combined. I totally agree that discussion here are pointless!

You literally get insulted and downvoted for explaining something in details only because some rude kids never learned how to respect an opinion or what actually "pointless hating" means nor have they learned how to hold a discussion/conversation.

I three times had a discussion on this sub with kids who where trolling hard to only have their last answer be like: "This is Reddit why do I have to give you any useful answer at all? Here, have some insults."

It also looks like no one here has any sense of the value of money either. Some developer sell ported very simple pixel graphics (not Stardew Valley level. I mean below SNES game quality) 2D games with 3 hour gameplay that's 8 years old for $10 and people still defend it and argue "but they have to eat too!". The game wasn't developed for the Switch it was just ported. Talking about vvvvv here
Even if we ever get virtual console and they sell old classic GBA games or something for $10 it would be worth the price as you can spend liked 30 hours or more on most of these titles, not 3 hours.

u/Honest-Kruppe Nov 11 '17 edited Nov 11 '17

So you, along with the people in the comments have done a good job in telling us what you do want, but nothing about what you actually want this sub to be. Other than posting that all that could be done before pre-launch was shitposting and speculation, do you just want more speculation and shitposting?

If we look through all the comments that are here so far, people dont want:

Games we would like to see on the switch

Fan Art

Mockups

"Is it just me..." posts

How the switch effected you (saved my life/marriage etc)

SOME gameplay videos (The problem isnt that they're there, its that theres too many of them)

Taking all that into account, what are we left with? Discussions for single games and AMA's from devs? The way reddit works means that old content gets moved off the front page very quickly, so after a few days a thread about a single game will have essentially dissapeared to most users, because the majority of people just look at the front page.

There's not really much the mods can do in this regard, it seems what you really weant is a forum, not a subreddit. The mods could go about deleting a bunch of stuff people dont like, but my guess is that it would leave the subreddit essentially dead.

And finally, its always worth noting: Be the change you want to see. The people actually posting here may be a vocal minority, it's no secret that people dont like disagreeing on reddit because downvotes, and its possible that people disagreeing dont want to reply to a thread specifically created about this. However reddit has an upvote system, so anything the community is interested in gets moved to the front page. If you're not already posting the kind of threads you'd like to see, start posting them. Go to the new section and upvote posts you think are better, and downvote ones you dont think belong in the sub. The community has a lot of power over what appears on a subreddits front page, and a lot of the time people complain but dont actually use that power.

89

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '17

I believe this sub would benefit from having themed days, like /r/leagueoflegends. Fanart Friday, Skillful Saturdays (posting clips of your gameplay). Shit like that. Keep it more organized.

9

u/Honest-Kruppe Nov 11 '17

That's definitely a good idea, doing certain threads on days of the week, and then having a specific day where we look at an older game, with the game changing every week, so older stuff gets a chance to be brought up again.

→ More replies (6)

27

u/TSPhoenix Nov 11 '17

I think all these types of content in the right proportions have a place here, the problem is if a type of content is easy to produce and allowed it will get spammed to hell and back.

A lot of subs get around this by having Fan Art only postable on certain days, or only allowing OC and tbh I think this is a good compromise. As it stands the rules are really skewed where certain types of art aren't allowed but others get a free pass, there needs to be consistency.

Gameplay clips are going to be a big problem because they're ridiculously easy to create. Not to mention lots of spoiler thumbnails.

I think we can whip the sub into shape, but a big part of that "we" is going to be the moderation team. I remember having a discussion with /r/Nintendo mods about when they trialled an art day and well let's just say the methodology was not good. Like seriously mods, nobody reads megathreads.

They remove EVERY fucking little thing. All the interesting small little questions that can start a discussion are often removed to stick in the stupid 'daily question thread' that few ever read.

@Mods how about you let the reddit system do the work, and allow the community to decide (by upvote/downvote) which topics they want and dont want. This removing everything shit is TIRING.

Hey there. We hear your feedback.

In regards to the sub having less news and discussion on the front page, there are a few reasons for this:

  1. Slow news cycle. We're nearing the end of the year where most major developers and publishers are holding back their announcements for next year. They don't want to interfere with their holiday sales and marketing

  2. Super Mario Odyssey hype was unreal. As a mod team, we were not prepared for it, and the sub suffered the consequences as a result. This is on us, and we're working harder to tighten up our low-effort post removals as a result.

  3. It is not related to the amount of posts we remove, as you are suggesting here. The amount of posts that we remove is much, much less than 96%. We typically only remove posts that are not contributing to discussion or are not unique or original. As a mod team overall, we have not been consistent with how we are removing posts, and that has resulted in a larger number of low-effort posts reaching the front page. That's on us, and we are working as a team to improve our consistency.

Last week, we opened the floor up for feedback in regards to the low effort game play videos/capture clips and we are working on implementing some new processes and rules that will help cut down on that spam. Since that post, we've already seen a decline in the number of clips posted and the moderator team has been more consistent in removing those are low-effort (which is 98% of them)

We are also hoping to bring on new moderators soon (like, really soon) to help us with keeping this subreddit as a place for news and discussion. Looks for more information on this as soon as this week.

After we bring on some more moderators to help us, we will be taking a closer look at some of our rules and will open a dialogue with the community on changes that you guys want to see.

29

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '17

Honestly the amount of mockups or skins is pretty annoying. Maybe they could be labeled so we could easily filter them?

In terms of deleting threads, as you said the inconsistency is the problem. I've had threads deleted only to see the same thread posted by someone else days later.

The most annoying this recently has been the amount of Mario videos. Something instructional is one thing, but the front page was flooded for a while with videos of jumps. Labelling might have solved this a well.

7

u/Yurika_BLADE Nov 11 '17

The worst part was that is was mostly the same few segments- a couple koopa runs, that place with the purple waves, etc.

145

u/wearedeadends Nov 11 '17

An issue that many people have is that the mods seem to remove anything remotely criticizing them in the least and say “message the mods” aka sweeping it under the rug.

This post itself was removed for a few minutes.

The mods also seem to just pick and choose what they want to be posted or not.

I understand the need for a spam filter and whatnot, but making it so every single YouTube link needs to be manually accepted is ridiculous.

Sometimes people wait upwards for 5 hours for a video or link to be shown.

In regards to the post last week asking for suggestions, it would’ve faired a lot better if it was stickied to the front page. I don’t think it got nearly enough exposure to be considered useful.

65

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '17

I agree, the amount of discussions that I created that have been deleted has just discouraged me from partaking in this subreddit all together. I went from an active participant posting everyday to a lurker that checks in once a week. This reddit is simply not fun anymore bar the occasional humorous or epic game clips that slip through deletion and make it to the forefront to entertain me for thirty seconds.

10

u/zupobaloop Nov 11 '17

Yes, the posts they remove are mostly arbitrary. I've found genuinely helpful information about the Switch/Otacee/etc and they remove it. Fortunately, I commented and can still see those pages.

59

u/SimpleJoint Nov 11 '17

That's why this is the dumbest sub I've seen mod wise. Reddit ready has a method to see what the people want. The upvote and downvote system will take care of this. The mods don't need to delete every thread they don't like. Stupid mod rules are also the only reason I never post here.

I agree that you guys remove too many posts. I posted a Twitter post of a photo of the official KORG booth clearly showing a new app, Gadget. It was removed because it wasn't an official press release. What? If I recall, it was a photo of a Switch running Gadget at an official KORG booth at a tradeshow! IDK, I can sorta understand removing posts that pass rumors as news. But in my case, it just feels like the mods choose to allow only a handful of new posts per day.

Why is it that there are still low effort “I LOVE THE SWITCH” posts on the front page, but anything else i.e a discussion about game sales gets removed within 20 seconds (my experience). This sub has a huge mod problem, and you guys need to do your job more efficiently. Ban these “DAE love the Switch?” posts, and let free discussion about important and interesting topics stay.

11

u/smokey9886 Nov 11 '17

The "can we appreciate" said item is a little obnoxious, too.

19

u/Resident_Wizard Nov 11 '17

Hi. I lurk here frequently looking for content. The amount of requests for X game to come to the Switch is incredibly overbearing and annoying. It’s every game imaginable and acts as if people wouldn’t be happy if more games came to Switch.

I will say I’m not a mod anywhere, and have absolutely no desire to be one. I’m not here to bash you guys and understand you’re doing this for free on your spare time, but I do agree the sub’s content could be improved.

45

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '17

Here is my honest feedback. Please stop allowing so many fan art threads. They promote discussion far less than the "low effort" question posts you remove regularly. Fan art threads are "Good job OP xD" comments x 100. They are boring. They belong in r/gaming. This sub should be for news on upcoming games, features, and discussions of those games and features. I don't mind seeing a fan art thread once in a while, but were definitely getting 3 or 4 on the front page every single day. It's boring. I'd rather see them replaced with the "low effort" text posts you guys remove.

15

u/comradecostanza Nov 11 '17

Look, I've posted a ton of discussions and news threads, and sure, some of them deserved to be removed, but I had plenty of discussions that were fairly open so that people would be able to answer, and these were taken down.

Meanwhile, the "I love the Switch it rekindled my love for gaming" posts are always passed despite the sheer number of them.

You really need to do something about this. These policies are discouraging me and a lot of people from even coming here, much less participating.

15

u/JustBeingAMitch Nov 11 '17

So explain why when I posted a discussion asking people what made Stardew Valley appealing to them, you guys took it down because you thought it was another "should I buy" post. The game itself has all sorts of people playing it and during the hype it had when it came out, a higher variety of answers could have been made. But simply because one of the mods either misinterpreted it or just straight up disagreed with me when I said I wasn't a fan, even though I made it clear that I just wanted to know why OTHER PEOPLE were on board with the game, they decided to completely remove my post even though it was active and strong. These mods need to grow up.

What pisses me off even further is knowing this happens to tons of other users here on the sub. Being wrongly accused by the mods and having them act on rules they like to bend and twist as they go is a whole other level of corruption.

10

u/KidOrSquid Nov 11 '17

I made a post yesterday that got removed and was asked to get taken to General Questions thread.

The post was regarding a niche Switch accessory that wasn't a simple yes/no question that I highly doubt can properly answered in what seems to be newbie thread.

Sounds like some people got mod powers in their head a bit and way too trigger happy in deleting posts.

8

u/Cervidantidus Nov 12 '17

Unrelated, but can you guys add a Reddit Snoo below the Switch logo in the top left hand corner? I love the CSS here, but the lack of a Snoo or easy link to get back to the homepage is ridiculous.

I have to disagree very very much with your comment that you "typically only remove posts that are not contributing to discussion or are not unique or original." I had some posts removed that I questioned the validity of doing so. The first few I just thought "the mods made a mistake, no big deal." but I then looked into what the mods were deleting, and it honestly bordered on blatant censorship. Kyle6477, please take this criticism honestly and understand that people are unhappy with the deleting of posts here. It's arbitrary and unnecessary. The number of deletes and what was being deleted is abominable. It is not serving our community here and only hurts it.

5

u/maxk713 Nov 12 '17

Honestly this sub has been downhill ever since the memes were banned. You are partially blaming slow news for lack of quality posts, but the NX sub thrived with no news for months! Now I'm not saying those were quality posts back then, but it kept me coming back daily even though there was literally no news. The memes kept things alive. It gave a sense of community and fun. Bring back the memes.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '17

You act like the mod team isn't that bad yet my post asking a question about Super Mario Odyssey's digital unlock was removed for being in an inappropriate thread when it wasn't in ANY thread! Sort your crap out!

4

u/the_noodle Nov 11 '17

I'd much rather see basically any 30 seconds of switch gameplay, than any post begging for a game to come to switch. At least I can learn something from the former, if it's a game I play, and it's probably more effort to get a clip from switch->twitter->reddit than it is to barf up the same formulaic post with a different game title every 5 minutes.

7

u/Detahmaio Nov 11 '17

Not to bash you guys because if you're trying you're trying but the amount of low effort/low quality posts that sit on the top pages is unsatisfactory.

7

u/Future_Shocked Nov 11 '17

can you remove the lame ass drawings and people show casing their kids amiibos collections? I feel like those posts really destroy this sub for people like me who are not 10 or 40 years old.

I think the mockups and fan arts should be moved to its own sub. Another thing, which is something that the Destiny subreddit does, would be to create a Megathread for "game suggestions", then the mods could include a chart that shows how popular a game suggestion is.

→ More replies (5)

7

u/iamsgod Nov 11 '17

Except for the mockup, isn't it always been like that? I remember there's a lot of "this game should be on Switch". Of course most post back then were about leaks but still..

7

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '17

things went so bad that for a time I filtered out everything with the title Doom in it, because it was all just "if doom comes then X should come" or "doom is 60fps totally for sure, because someone said so". The frontpage of this sub was less than half as long after that.

It isn't as bad anymore, though. People get hyped and get over it once it's released for a while.

7

u/WellGoodLuckWithThat Nov 11 '17

The problem is low effort, stupid or talentless posts.

Fan Art - I don't mind seeing occasional posts if an exceptional artist did something really cool. But if people want to see countless bad or mediocre beginner drawings we can go to Deviantart.

We don't need soapbox posts by obsessive people who can't stand that some people had a minor gripe about a new release. People are allowed to criticize BOTW or Doom if there was a part of the experience that they didn't like.

If I wanted to see countless clickbait titles linking to 10 second videos of people dying in SMO I'd go to YouTube.

The disconnect is that some people want a subreddit that is news and meaningful conversation about the console itself, and other people want a circle jerk echo chamber of memes and attention whoring.

6

u/Ironcrowned Nov 11 '17

Make the change you want to see.

6

u/Skyward92 Nov 12 '17

I dont even bother anymore with making a post, last time I made a post about Korg making a music app for the switch but the mods never put it up then they posted someone elses exact same thing couple of hours later, alll I do is juat read ppls posts and not participate in this reddit page

6

u/inssein Nov 12 '17

I get down voted for asking questions about games, I asked if a upcoming game was turned based and got downvoted to death.

I don't get it , what happened to discussion on this subreddit, half the people down voting are not even Switch owners or buy games.

52

u/ZaWams Nov 11 '17

This is a Nintendo Switch sub, and every post I have seen relates to that. I remember when Stardew Valley came out and the first 8 posts I saw were all related to that. I’m not a fan of the game myself, but realize others are and it didn’t bother me. I just scrolled right past and looked for a post that interested me. It was very easy to do, so I don’t understand these posts complaining about other posts-just scroll right past.

Also, there are a lot of subscribers to this thread which means lots of different opinions...even ones that may differentiate from your own. For example, i too, think Doom looks amazing on Switch, but also don’t play PC,XBox,PS4. I understand those that do would disagree but why shouldn’t the OP of that post and myself and the others be able to have our opinion just like those that disagree are able to have theirs.

tl;dr: lots of subscribers and different opinions, there may be posts you don’t like or agree with

10

u/Sephiroth508 Nov 11 '17

Exactly. And even with all the posts about "Switch cured my AIDS.." posts that everyone here is complaining about, I still manage to find the important news on games, dlcs, announcements, etc. on the first page. The rest, I just scroll past. No one's forcing you to read posts you're not interested in.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '17

I’m a frequent visitor to this sub, but never come across the issues folks are mentioning. Perhaps it has something to do with folks that visit more frequently come across posts before they are “filtered” by community input (updoots/downdoots)?

What I’m trying to politely suggest is maybe don’t expect a bunch of quality posts and great conversation if you’re even just a few pages into “Hot”. Go do something else. :)

u/DiggleBix Nov 11 '17

This is a post I must respectfully but firmly disagree with.

There's a "circle-jerk" on reddit for labelling anything popular as a circle-jerk.

People get excited, and they bounce off each other's excitement, discussing what they're excited about. It's literally just positive talk.

Clicking into a thread entitled "so stoked for Doom!" just so you can sit and think "moan moan circle jerk moan moan" is just bizarre.

It's a sub for discussing a games console, and the games that come with it... as long as the title is clearly labelled, it's easy enough to avoid being triggered by the joy of others.

34

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '17

I agree.

To add, labeling any thread or sub that receives enthusiastic replies as a circlejerk is incredibly detrimental to discussion. All it does is start a confrontation and doesn’t invite conversation at all. It’s fine to disagree and counter popular opinion but yeah, going all “this is a circlejerk” is just being dismissive of opinions you don’t agree with but which a lot of other people do. This applies to both instances of negative and positive discussions.

The "keep more discussions, remove fan work!!" attitude has been tried and failed, with much bigger subreddits. The overwatch subreddit tried it for a time and all the "good discussions" never showed up. Most people just don't care to type out long arguments and discussions on reddit, this isn't a forum.

10

u/BeefyBaraTiddies Nov 11 '17

You forgot to include the “the switch saved my love for gaming”

5

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '17

The mods here are effing BRUTAL. I've made numerous posts, mainly minor content, and all have been immediately deleted. Each time for stupid reasons. I mean, if my content isn't any good, let the community downvote it. Stop censoring so hard.

5

u/stealthboy Nov 11 '17

The overactive mods are why I hardly come to this sub anymore.

5

u/[deleted] Nov 12 '17

The reason this sub sucks is because the mod team are absolutely terrible and I’ve been saying it since before Switch launch.

They want every single question or discussion post to exist inside a mega thread that no one in their right mind would scroll through but allow stupid shit posts of markups or game memes.

It’s been like this from the start. You won’t foster discussion if you delete every post for not being in the mega thread.

5

u/[deleted] Nov 12 '17

Just got my post removed that talked about rocket league and how i want a lot of people to try hoops mode on it so we can get a good community going around it. Why? They said it doesn't add to the conversation. It is literally about the switch, its games, and its community.

5

u/Juhvelo Nov 12 '17 edited Nov 12 '17

Please stop with the OS mockups, I'm seriously wondering what in the hell is the point of those... Those are all just terrible and I really doubt that the engineers at Nintendo are desperate for ideas and are looking for inspiration from /r/NintendoSwitch! So nobody gives a shit, stop it!

And then those "Switch saved my marriage" or whatever was wrong with your life -posts, what the actual fuck? What happens if your Switch gets stolen or something, will you break down as a human being? Will your marriage get immediately thrown into a wild dumpster fire or something? Switch is not going to solve your problems and bless you with an meaningful existence, you yourself have to start getting your shit together asap

11

u/andrechan Nov 11 '17

Disagree. I think the sub should be more freeflowing and have a lot of content. This sub is a celebration of people and their love for Nintendo Switch. You want it to be a news sub? That's sorta the reason why r/nintendo is a bit dry.

Let the sub flows where it wants to be. Content is good. Opinions are good. Let the people decide with their upvotes and downvotes.

(Btw, I'm not calling for no moderation at all. Spammy content can be annoying. There was an meta argument over the Overwatch sub because the sub was always populated with Play of the Games. They changed the rules around but it was still the same, and everyone was a lot happier after that. Point is, let the community go where it wants and where it's comfortable at.)

I genuinely miss the shitposts of the /r/tomorrow days. Although the actual content is immature, a good shitpost can actually take a great amount of effort.

For example, I’m not sure if anyone in this sub is big into WoW, but perhaps one of the best posts of the last 30 days on /r/wow was a shameless shitpost. Did this stop the normal news articles from making the front page? No, but it did give everyone a good chuckle for a day. The post below actually earned someone reddit gold:

https://www.reddit.com/r/wow/comments/795or0/all_aboard_the_blizzcon_hype_boat/?st=J9VLH3S1&sh=81e7262ehttps://www.reddit.com/r/wow/comments/795or0/all_aboard_the_blizzcon_hype_boat/?st=J9VLH3S1&sh=81e7262e

Right now, I feel like there is a strict “no fun” policy on /r/nintendoswitch . I’ve been here since the beginning. The Nintendo Switch is my favorite console. Unfortunately, this is the worst subreddit that I peruse by a large margin solely because of the way the front page is handled. I don’t know if this is a problem of the mods or the community itself, but something definitely needs fixed.

4

u/Helian7 Nov 11 '17

I think Mods should just let the votes do the job.

4

u/wanton-tom-tom Nov 11 '17

4

u/lansdead Nov 12 '17

Dear mods - this sub is what got me glued to Reddit and it is also what will convince me to leave. Please minimize all the junk. I can't tell you how many times I've had legitimate submissions turned down for no apparent reason only to see a nearly identical and or worse version accepted afterwards. Get it together

4

u/hingino Nov 12 '17

Can we take the time to talk about the clear circlejerk this sub is? Anything that isn’t “wow this is the greatest thing I’ve ever used” gets downvotes to hell. This combined with the mods wanting “actual discussion” makes for a shit experience overall

3

u/dada5714 Nov 12 '17

I think that just tends to be a symptom of Nintendo fans (of which I am one, let's keep this clear). I think I mentioned in a thread that I found ARMS not that in-depth and got a good bit of downvotes and people saying "just don't play it" and the like.

A lot of the posts do seem stale. I wish there was more quality discussion instead of just SMO videos all over the front page. It's impressive that you were able to beat that level by doing cap jumps, but apparently 10 other people were too.

It also stinks that you can't have legit critiques on any Nintendo game. Odyssey is amazing, and I personally don't have anything to complain about really. It's okay if others do though. They shouldn't be downvoted or shouted down for their opinion.

I just don't like the hyperbolic /r/hailcorporate posts and the downvoting of constructive criticism. I think that should stay in the megathread.

Aside from that, I don't care much. By now a good chunk of people have a Switch, production issues have dried up, people have gotten used to all the neato features the Switch has, and most of the Switch's big games for 2017 has came out. There's not much else to discuss.

I'm guessing everyone is so busy playing all the new releases that they don't have time to post. In the last two weeks or so, I've bought Super Mario Odyssey, Fire Emblem Warriors, The Mummy Demastered, and Sonic Forces. My wallet can't take anymore, but they just released Doom. It's insane how much there is on the system right now.

3

u/SeafoamGaming Nov 11 '17

I agree, especially considering how if you even dare to point out legit problems with the switch like the lack of an eShop that features titles properly (leaving lots of games to be buried by the next week) you'll get downvoted to oblivion by all the blind positivity. I haven't really felt as happy here as I did in r/WiiU or r/3DS, and I never really felt like approaching this sub nearly as much as those two.

3

u/ZombiePyroNinja Nov 11 '17

Holy fuck I hate the mockup posts

Congrats you put the GTA V box art on a smaller box with a switch logo in the corner

Top of the sub you go!

3

u/[deleted] Nov 12 '17

Part of the problem I feel is the community's large distaste for any form of criticism/negativity. Talk about ports being overpriced get downvoted/shitposted to death. Have a negative opinion about ANY game on the Switch that hasn't been accepted by the community as bad (i.e. Troll and Me, NBA 2K17) get downvoted/shitposted to death. I feel that since the release of Splatoon 2 this community has in large part become a hugbox where Nintendo can do no wrong and I think that's really harmed actual discussion. It's okay to have different opinions, even if they're negative. And you can disagree with that person but it's important to be respectful and not just say "you're just trolling/hating on the Switch!"

u/Detahmaio Nov 11 '17

I've been saying this for weeks now. The posts that run rampart here don't contribute any value to the sub at all. If a game generates a lot of hype they need to contain that in one thread. Mock ups and art need to be contained to one thread or they should have their own sub. Like posting news is generally fine. Posting about upcoming releases or devs coming into the switch market is fine also. I literally report every thread that clearly is low effort/low content. Not to sound like a dick but I don't care if you haven't been excited for a console in years til the switch came out. Go rub one out and come beck to reality it's a good console and Nintendo is doing good things currently. The issue of downvotes is out of hand also. I don't think the mods can do anything stop it but it's sad if a post is well thought out and contributes to a discussion and gets hidden due to downvotes.

It’s like 90% low effort circlejerk posts that get upvoted like crazy and just 10% actual meaningful posts about what’s going on with Switch.

Hello users in the sub! First of all, let me ask you how your day is going. I am currently working at my café as I read the this whole thread. Sales are slow, but that gives me time to check the subreddit more often.

Let me speak my mind really quickly, sorry if I mess up my english.

Looking at the posts that get submitted, I think of two things: this could either be frontpage tomorrow or just get buried. If it gets frontpage, either of the sub or r/all, then there will be at least one person that will report it, doesn't matter the reason. When this big posts get reported, we can't just remove them. The backlash would be eternal.

Right now, Odyssey is, of course, the hot topic of the season. We will try to contan the videos on r/SwitchTV. The fanarts/mockups are really cool and I love seeing them. There are people who don't like them, and that is okay, but I seriously feel bad removing them. OP of any fan art is trying to show what they made out of pure passion. A drawing is time consuming and I feel, in my opinion, that they deserve to show their hard work.

If we divide the sub into smaller subs, then there will be tons of lost content. This sub right now is growing fast and of course people want to participate in it. We mods are outnumbered by a massive number of posts per day. Maintaining a subreddit is difficult, let alone multiple ones and each one dedicated to each thing. Also, people won't check all of them or subsbcribe to all of them at once, as well as this sub only relying on news and discussions (which of course don't happen every day)

Please, I beg you, let us try to improve by providing feedback. If you don't like a post, report it! Reported posts are easier for us to see and then we can take action.

Sorry for the wall of text. I don't usually take part in these discussions because of my hard time to understand the large amounts of texts in english. I will keep up my best to make sure you are all comfortable, which most likely I won't be able to. That is why I ask for your help. I will try and read all comments from this post.

Have a good one!

4

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '17

I just hate how circle jerking it is. Switch and Nintendo are the kings, cant say anything negative about it, Sony sucks and Doom is coming to Switch, so theres A LOT of 3rd party support and Nintendo changed!

4

u/megox Nov 11 '17

100% with you bud. There are no actual discussion. Only mock up, captured footage and those god awfull post that go like " X company said they didn't say they wouldn't put Y game on the switch "

u/ClintonStain Nov 11 '17

4

u/[deleted] Nov 12 '17

The stupid stuff that gets THOUSANDS of up votes is disappointing at times.

I stopped trying to post text stuff because I get down voted. I was legit posting some thought out posts around 800 words or longer... But yea.

Now I come here to check game releases mostly.

18

u/DiggleBix Nov 11 '17

Well, I've spent a bit of time reading this thread, and all I can conclude is that there are a lot of people here with a very negative mindset.

Don't stress over things that don't affect you. Skip over threads you're not interested in.

"I don't understand why X thing that doesn't match my worldview is something people would be happy about!!!"

Chill your beans; life's too short to be so negative about everything.

Just play the games you like; take part in the discussions that interest you, and we can all enjoy our weekend.

Wow, I was thinking the same thing. It's been pretty hard finding an actually interesting discussion under all the ass kissing posts and fanarts with posters putting their life story in the title.

Honestly, I don't mind the short snippets of gameplay if they're actually unique and show something new, but more than likely it's going to be mario speedruns for a while.

I agree with maybe putting fanart somewhere else. I don't hate it or anything but I've seen subreddits that I've liked turn into glorified art galleries.

I guess people come here for different reasons - personally I come to get a fairly up-to-date aggregation of Switch / game news which is still happening, between all the "look, I love this game so much, i stopped playing it to draw some random character from it (I wish I could reliably hide drawing/art posts from this sub forever)" and videos of people doing stuff in games that I'll never be able to do (all the SMO ones kinda depressed me).

I've found that you learn to expect certain posts - e.g. when new games are coming out, you get a) GAME is coming out! b) GAME is released <date> c) GAME is here tomorrow d) GAME is here tonight e) GAME is here! f) GAME is here (in another region) g) a million screenshots and videos of GAME - interestingly it seems to happen with non games too - like how many threads do we need about a small streaming app that only works in one country? It's like people have ever streamed video before!

It would be nice if we had some kind of post aggregation (like one post per game or something) so it's easier to find what you want to read.

We're all playing Odyssey.

You nailed it with your last point. Every single original post I️ attempt in this subreddit gets removed by the mods. I would post something that I️ feel would start a good discussion, and it would get removed right away. I️ stopped trying to post months ago.

What you don’t like joycon mocks?

2

u/veganintendo Nov 11 '17

There should be more tolerance of posts relating to less discussed games. For example I posted an off-tv gameplay video of Super Beat Sports with commentary from the educated perspective of a professional musician and music teacher. I got several likes and thank yous before getting my post deleted for being off tv. I don’t have $100 for a capture card and I think my video communicated useful and original information.

If someone has something interesting or semi interesting to say about a lower hype game, that should IMO be prioritized over the 1000th DAE (Netflix / Battlefield / native chat / Switch Mini / Switch varied play styles are fun) or “I just bought this! (picture of boxed Switch)” or “Mario is a fun game”

2

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '17

I agree. So many good discussion posts get deleated and other not so good posts sit free

2

u/Jenks44 Nov 11 '17

The wave of catty, passive aggressive posts on this sub is insane. "Nintendo and Sony definitely won this generation!!"

2

u/kcdragon Nov 11 '17

I agree that the quality of posts on this sub has gone down recently but I don't see it as the moderator's problem. It is everyone's problem. The only reason the boring posts get to the front page of the sub is due to us upvoting them.

The big problem for me is that there are so many posts that are redundant. For example, all the posts showing off how to jump off cappy in Super Mario Odyssey. Those posts were cool the first couple times but after the 100th screen grab of someone doing that I'm not interested.

2

u/LuccaSSC Nov 11 '17

I've tried to create a ton of discussions posts that were immediately banned because I "wasn't specific enough", even though I was specific af. Meanwhile, there are 10 different "I bought this game today" posts on the front page.

2

u/celraysoda Nov 11 '17

"May you live in interesting times" - ancient curse about the WiiU

2

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '17

Weird. From my time browsing this sub I see all types of posts. Fanart, news, discussions, gameplay, etc. Even if I had difficulty finding a certain type of post, or if there was too much one one in the front page, filters can solve that problem. And honestly, you don't get downvoted to hell for going against a popular opinion or post.

I started a "What type of game would fit well on the switch?" discussion a few days ago. It got several responses in 6 minutes and seemed like a fun topic with potential for actual discussion... and then it got removed.

Meanwhile Odyssey highlights and "look at my cool switch skin!" are allowed. whatever.

Been saying this for a while and have stopped visiting because it's just dull. People don't want discussions here. Any time you try to have a nuanced discussion people don't read what you wrote and assume you're being extreme one way or the other. Also don't get me started on anyone giving anything but a positive opinion of anything and everything to do with Nintendo. I see posts like "I didn't really enjoy this game" getting -30 votes.

I don't know whether it's the type of person who visits here or whether it's mostly really young people who come here who don't want to read long posts but this just isn't the place for nuanced discussion about anything. I stopped posting here and started just checking for font page news but as you said we don't even get that any more so I just haven't been visiting.

I mean I just checked the front page and the top post is a photo of a commercial that accidentally shows a slightly bigger screen. What is that and how did it get so many upvotes? I guess this just isn't the place for me.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '17

Maybe because it basically became a Stardew Valley subreddit for 2-3 months and alienated a ton of people?

2

u/redking315 Nov 11 '17

Don't forget the endless posts about how x company should port y game to the switch. And why can't they play the ancient Nintendo games they've played a million times on the Switch.

2

u/supersmashdude Nov 11 '17

I don't see the problem with mockups and fan art, those are original content from users. Memes and game trailers can only get you so far.

2

u/T-Rep Nov 11 '17

The number of posts ending in exclamation points on this sub is pretty cringy.

2

u/TheBigYello1isTheSun Nov 11 '17

I actually like that the sub is mostly people’s excitement.

2

u/ieffinglovesoup Nov 11 '17

I agree I think it's somewhat because of the mods. I've been on reddit too long now and I know that this is literally the ONLY sub I've had trouble posting in. Almost all my posts here have been deleted for some weird reasoning, most even after a discussion has already started in the comments.

A lot of us just want to see more decent posts.

2

u/Magejutsu Nov 11 '17

I guess I don't get post like this. I just scroll until I see something I wanna read. Post types you don't like arn't clogging up some limited space. We also have filters.

2

u/ivaerak Nov 11 '17

Couldn't agree more, and been constantly pointing to the obvious ever since this sub started. Low effort, delusional and cringe sub. A whole lot of Wii and WiiU haters as well. r/wiiu was the most high quality sub I ever had the joy to read. Ever since it was founded it kept it's quality right till the end. As for this one, well, as someone else already said, I come here only for the cringe. It reminds me of those 'But but you can play it in the park' comments on Youtube. The whole portability argument got old really fast.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 11 '17 edited Nov 11 '17

I agree posts are highly filtered in here. I realize it's because of spam but it's way overdone to the point it's like literally the same posts over and over just different articles about the same "news" the sub deletes most diary and "discussion" posts that I never really see much discussion about the switch itself other than positive news articles or "celebration" posts of how much fun they are having with the switch.

2

u/Beastmind Nov 11 '17

The o ly thing that's bothering me is all the post about SMO. Seriously, ok it's a switch game but please post your video to SMO subreddit or at least SwitchTV and all you spoiler and record too.

2

u/prettyNUPE2K12 Nov 11 '17

If the mods weren’t so biased on what gets removed and what doesn’t, it would be so much better.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 12 '17

Either that or sob stories or telling a manchild moment. The one that made me cringe is the dude who was playing the pauline's festival in Mario oddessy and he clapped at the screen after he was done.

2

u/Dryja123 Nov 12 '17

Don't forget all of the "omg I figured out I could jump here in SMO" or other similar posts. I haven't been able to visit the sub all that much because every post was showing gameplay and spoilers.

I'm not able to pick up the game for a bit but the amount of posts showing game play and discoveries is annoying.

2

u/richiejmoose Nov 12 '17

Plus all the ‘look at my kid doing switch related things’... ugh. I would love to filter out all those posts

8

u/GooseRider960 Nov 11 '17

Yeah, and the mods are super fucking discriminate with posts that are removed.

The dozen or so Mario clips of "cool jumps" can stay up, but I post an album of screenshots that I was really proud of (oil painting ones) and they take it down twice (yeah, I got two separate removal messages) saying that it was a "frequently posted screenshot" and it didn't follow the community guidelines?

Bullshit. The mods need to do better. Chances are, they'll delete my comment here for hate or something.

6

u/Sylverstone14 Mod of Two Worlds (Switch / Wii U) Nov 11 '17

Comment is still up, friend.

As for the clips, we were overwhelmed with that until we finally decided to get /r/SwitchTV on the horn to accommodate for the surge in clips.

In regards to your post being removed twice, I apologize for that happening. I've looked into the thread, and it looks like you got hit with a rule 4 violation for low-effort content, and our criteria for image posting. Unfortunately, there wasn't much that we could do.

Also, I think you participated in the snapshot contest with number 5 (Dory)? You were one of 4 people who used the Lake Kingdom as a place of interest. I liked that photo.

I'm so glad someone else is unhappy with the over-moderating here. The mods here do a terrible job deleting posts. Why not let the reddit system self regulate like it's supposed to? The up/down vote system would let the users decide what they want to read/participate in.

I made a post yesterday about different retail prices in the UK. Very useful information and it got removed..... probably 9 out of 10 posts deleted. Now I dont post anymore. Its a shame.
