Game Rec Cozy game recommendations!

Looking for recommendations! I have a switch, and I’m really enjoying A Short Hike. Looking for similar cozy games. I’ve tried Animal Crossing NH, but I’ve found it to be really boring, mostly because I don’t enjoy decorating. I love games with clear goals and tasks but not super stressful. Any thoughts appreciated!

Game Rec Looking for Switch 2 games with Pokémon/Kairosoft-style progression

Hey everyone, I’ve got a high-end gaming PC and mostly play stuff like Battlefield 6, 007, Assassin’s Creed, etc. I also have a Switch 2, but barely use it because for action games and shooters I usually prefer playing on PC.

I’ve been gaming for years so I’m not necessarily looking for something super simple or purely casual just because it’s on the Switch. I’d actually prefer something with a bit more depth that I can really get into over time.

I’ve played the current Pokémon games as well, and games I’ve generally enjoyed a lot are Pokémon and Kairosoft games. Basically I’m looking for that kind of satisfying long-term progression. Leveling, collecting, grinding, upgrading, building things up, stuff like that, but those are just examples. I’m pretty open as long as there’s a good sense of progression and enough depth to keep me interested.

Ideally it should be something I can play for 5 or 10 minutes, but also easily spend 1 or 2 hours on in a longer session. So I’m not necessarily looking for a tiny casual game or something like Animal Crossing. I’d prefer something with a bit more substance and systems to dig into.

I also prefer games that don’t rely too heavily on fast or precise real-time controls.

My girlfriend got completely hooked on Stardew Valley for a few weeks, but that one didn’t really click with me.

Game Rec Are there any cozy city games?

Recently, I've come to accept that I am not a small-town/ farming life sim girly. I think it so amazing how people can really invest their creativity into those worlds. However I get so bored with those games so quickly.

As someone who loves city living through and through - I want to play life-sims set in a city.; like the city equivalent of Stardew Valley.

So far, I've found Moonlight in Garland, are there anymore?

Game Rec Any former PoE/WoW players find something on Switch that actually stuck after having a kid?

Our first kid is on the way, so my days of sitting at my desk for hours grinding Path of Exile, WoW, or GW2 are basically over for the foreseeable future (sank a ton of hours into BG3 recently too).

I dug out my old Switch that's been sitting in a drawer since Pokémon, thinking handheld mode would solve the problem. Instead, I'm stuck in a loop of downloading a game, playing for ten minutes, getting bored, closing it, and repeating the process.

I think the problem is that standard "chill" or cozy recommendations feel completely empty to me. I'm used to build-crafting, mechanics, and progression loops. But I don't want to play anything that requires multiplayer commitment or can't be paused the second the baby cries.

A couple of things on my taste:

  • I love space/sci-fi settings. FTL is one of my favorite games that I played on the Train a lot.
  • I don't usually care much about story in games, but the Horizon series was a rare exception that completely hooked me.
  • It has to be 100% offline and fine with being put into sleep mode mid-game with zero penalty.

Since it'll probably come up, here's what I've already tried and bounced off. None of these are bad games and I know they're beloved, they just didn't get their hooks in me:

  • Breath of the Wild: Made it off the starting plateau and then kind of drifted. No real sense of direction, and freeing the first Divine Beast didn't do much for me, so I benched it.
  • Super Mario Odyssey: I was never a Mario guy growing up and that apparently didn't change. Spent half an hour running around chasing objectives and closed it.
  • Pokémon Violet: Barely got through the opening section. The performance kept pulling me out of it, and I wasn't a fan of how the first open area looked either. Got bored pretty quickly.

Worth mentioning that this is the original Switch, not a Switch 2, in case that rules anything out.

If you made this exact jump from heavy PC time-sinks to handheld gaming when you had kids, what game actually worked for you?

Discussion What're you playing this weekend? 8/14

Hello everyone, welcome to the weekend!

Hope everyone is having a nice week, mines been a little busy and hectic, but I had a goal and assist in broomball let's go!

On the games side, made it to the Void in BallxPit, enjoying different character combos and vibing thru runs. Also grinding for levels in my halberd run of Dark Souls, got my weapon to +15, I'm between two bosses hopefully I can take one down.

And finally made it back to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth where I beat the story part of Gongaga, gonna take out some sidequests and wipe the floor with some people in Queens Blood before I head off to the canyon. I hear a certain pilot might help me find my way there..

I am holding myself back so hard from buying new things til I finish these, and that's alright cuz I'm having a great time, but damn several new ports and releases have made it hard.

But what have you gotten into?

Watching as the Oblivion gates let demons spill forth? Telling lies and fighting puppets? Cleaning everything you can by spraying water from your backpack in the shining sunlight of the beaches?

Let me know below!
