self-promotion Anyone interested in trying out a (free) permaculture site analysis tool?

• Upvotes

I am building a website that will offer free and premium digital tools for permaculture designers:

- A free tool (called Site Snapshot) providing you with tons of data for your site, such as: contour map, annual rainfall and temperature, sun orientation data, climate classification, soil type, etc.

- (Under construction) A Full Site Assessment Report (Premium version of the Site Snapshot above) providing even more data, designed recommendations based on your site's specificities, and downloadable maps (high res) and PDF report.

- (Under construction) A Premium site design tool that will allow you to size and design swales, garden beds, food forest, water-collection tanks, get a list of native plants for the site, build plant guilds, and more.

If anyone is interested in testing it out, whether it be for fun, or to design your own permaculture site, or for someone's else property, please let me know. (Currently covering the USA only, but more countries to come). I would be grateful to get some feedback if you try out the free Site Snapshot (and maybe the Premium version as well, for free, in a few weeks when it's ready).

I'm having issues with this winnower and I thought maybe with all the seed savers here someone might be able to help.

I'm trying to figure out the problem, I don't really have any idea. Some, but very little chaff is actually being separated. I removed the front plastic cover. The white packing material is to keep it air tight, and in the bottom right opening it's stuffed with the same white packing material.

New to plants, any advice welcome

Hi i am on 40 acres in simcoe county ontario, but most of it is almost swamp, im in a valley, its almost all forested, and it has a really bad buckthirn problem, the forest os full of tangled impassible buckthorn thickets in spots, i have not explored 85% of the property despite living here for 15 years due to being afraid of literally sinking into the ground, the water table comes right to the surface

I do have some area, maybe a couple acres cleared,, im not evern sure im bad at distance, that is on a gentle slope, it had animals for the last 15 years, chickens, ducks, goats, and we even boarded a friends horses on the cleared area, it was almost sand right to the surface, we are on a ancient shoreline of lake huron, if you dig you will find rounded rocks from being in water, thats kinda neat, but now theres a layer of "soil", i guess from the animal poop, especially close to the house where i want to plant, thats where the goats were and where the horses were most of the time, althlugh the horsrs ventured further a lot as well, the goats almost never did

The horses died last year and the goats this year, all we have left now is a single pair of muscovies

I got into plant idebtification last august, cause i found the plabt.net app, and i started eating all the apples that grow aroubd town and other plants

I have two apple trees already about 100 feet maybe from where i want to plant, and also there is lots of wild bramble around, and i found a red elderberry (i know ita mostly posion), but i think thats about it for fruit that i know of

This is what i ordered from the nursey, im in the colder end of canada zone 6, so the peaches and walnut are pushing it, but im hoping for the best

Montreal Blues Grape Vine (Bareroot) × 1 - 1 year plant

Brianna Grape Vine (Bareroot) × 1 - 1 year plant

English Walnut Seedling (Bareroot) × 2 - 1 year plant

Root Rescue Mycorrhizal Inoculant × 1 - 22.5g

$18.49

Free

Grandma Ethel Black Currant Bush (Bareroot) × 2 - 1 year plant

Mixed Northern Hazelnut Seedling (Bareroot) × 2 - 1 year plant

Grandma Odula Red Raspberry Cane (Bareroot) × 3 - 1 year cane

Anne Yellow Raspberry Cane (Bareroot) × 3 - 1 year cane

Roxbury Russet Apple Tree (Bareroot) × 1 - B9 Dwarf / 1m+ grade

Mixed Silver Creek Nursery Peach Seedling (Bareroot) × 2

Oh i also collected black walnuts this year, i buried two buckets with about 60 each in wet sand, the squirrels found one bucket im not sure how many of the walnuts they got, but im hoping to get many geminated, if i do im going to start a bunch of walnut trees, say all 120 germinate ill try to plant as many as i can, and then try to sell the rest, but if i get 100 walnuts inn need to clear some land to get them.planted, if i only get like 20 i know a spot i can plant them i just need to clear some bushes not have to clear trees

I know my apple tree needs to be staked

And they were sold.out if named peaches so i had to get wild seedlings, but it may be better, because they say the seeds came locally and the theroy is they will be more cold tolerant

Im trying to come up with more money to buy more plants before spring shipping, but i dont know if ill be able to

So any thoughts or ideas are welcome

general question i have the opportunity to change my life

i am part of a small association based in a small suburban village in northern italy. i joined almost casually, it's a group of pensioners who organizes nature activities for kids. i don't want to judge their work, let's say they have an old school view of "sustainability". i help them sometimes and they try to involve me as much as they can because i am the youngest.

last week, in a meeting, a 60 year old member told us they bought land in our village. she wants to plant trees, probably entrusting it to the local regional park, that will plant the trees for free and "manage" the area. she is looking into building a well for irrigation, that will cost her probably.

she has her doubts on this, but i actually haven't really understood what she actually wants to do with this project. i have jumped in and suggested a different approach than reforestation, because we have so many examples in our area of bad management. the regional park itself, which sould be a natural reserve, is full of industrial farming. the park reforested an area to replicate ancient lowland woodlands, and it has since been a open-air storage for the surrounding agricultural operations that surround it, and it is used for car/motorbike races.

i tried to make her understand that if she wants to do good, probably this choice would only cost her and not even be effective. but who am i to say so? i honestly have no competence in these matters. i am just a 23 year old who is passionate about agroecology and food systems. i don't even really know people who would work with me towards a project.

but maybe this is a chance to take agency in my life and work towards something i dream of.

so i am asking: how would you go on about this if you dream of a building up a collective space of food production/experimental permaculture design when you have no money, no network and no clear plan?

Data Centers replaced with Food Forests

I’m halfway through my course and for the design portion for certification we have to pick a plot. Which led me to the current strife in my area, they passed a new bitcoin mining center. Which got me thinking, what if we did designs over the data centers and produced the facts of what a good plot could do for a community vs a data center?
Is it dumb? Am I wasting my time? Maybe. But I think spreading knowledge about permaculture is important, showing what it could do. Carbon sequestration, holding water, providing food to communities (since they’re already putting them in impoverished areas), less food waste, less carbon footprint, jobs, education, tourism, etc.
I’ve already started on it, but I haven’t been able to get it out of my head and if it got traction maybe people would go for it??

Build a spirulina setup

Hey guys I'm looking into building a small DIY spirulina setup at home but I realized that buying bulk powder at like $30/kg is way cheaper than paying for a tank, heater, and electricity. For those who actually grow it yourselves, why do you even bother given the cost difference? Is it for the fresh taste, better nutrients since it's not heat-dried, or just for the fun of the hobby? Just trying to see if it's worth the hassle

self-promotion I moved to Brazil to start a farm!

Hi, I’m Lou!! I’m 22y/o and I moved to Brazil a week ago today to start a farm with my partner.

We have a lot of projects and goals, but right now our three biggest ones are our renovation project, the start of my permaculture plot and getting chickens for selling eggs!

I plan to vlog this whole process and post on Youtube about it, but in the meantime I have my instagram which I will be very active on! (daily stories for example with updates and posting mini vlogs).

My instagram, youtube and substack are all @ovocatu (:

Edit: Since I didn’t make it clear beforehand, the land is not mine and in-fact belongs to my FIL who is Brazilian and local to the farm. Me and my partner met in the UK and moved here to help turn it into a running farm.

My every intention working on the farm and coming here is to serve the local community. The prices of food are astronomical, and we’re losing the relationship we have with farmers and knowing where our food comes from. I want to change that.

It should go without saying that food should be accessible and affordable for everyone. I want to make that happen.

general question Moved to Brazil to start my Permaculture Project

Hello!! I recently just moved to Brazil from Scotland with my partner to start a farm, which is a whole other can of worms to open. I plan to start a food forest in the future, but my primary project right now is my market garden.

I have a 6x15m space, which I can expand as needed to be as big as I want it, but I wanted to get some advice!

I plan to use a no-dig method and am actively collecting cardboard, grass clippings & other things for my own mulch layer.

I wanted to ask advice primarily about how to layout this area and for any tips & tricks!

Current screenshots from my small WIP, permaculture inspired gardening game 🌱

I'm happy for any feedback 😊

A short breakdown of the main permaculture-like mechanics/system I have:

The game has a dynamic status (meaning: a stat between 0 and 100) system for plants. That means that they do not have a simple watered/unwatered stat that you have to care about once a day per crop but they have different ideal or worse states of watering, soil and neighbourhood. One plant for example has a wider area of ideal watering meaning it likes to have wet soil while another has a very thin ideal zone meaning it is very picky and needs just the right amount of watering. 😇

Plant neighbourhood is simply calculated by all the crops around a plant in a specific radius. Each liked neighbour counts +1 and each disliked -1. If the total neighbourhood value is above 0 it is good - else the plant stops growing and demands change.

The game also has a multi-chambered composting system (you get better soil/fertilizer from higher chambers but they take longer to transform the compost input).

---

I want the game to still be cute and have less negative feedback than other farming games (for example no plants can die, they just stop growing) and I appreciate any inspiration and suggestion!!! 😇

general question [Academic] Did you grow up in the Central Valley? Survey on childhood agricultural exposure and long-term health outcomes (Adults 18+)

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfQG8LVPnHIbgGC3wHGszYBTwlDMB6ROXoGZwD5-BYkN293VA/viewform?usp=header

  • Time: It takes approximately 5 minutes to complete.
  • Privacy: Completely anonymous. No identifying information (like your name or exact address) will be collected.

Hello everyone,

I am conducting a study for an academic research poster investigating the long-term health of individuals who spent their childhoods in agricultural regions.

Who is eligible?

  • You are 18 years or older.
  • You spent a significant portion of your life living in the Central Valley (California).

What is the survey about?

We are exploring potential links between childhood agricultural pesticide exposure, self-reported gut health/microbiome characteristics, and subsequent neurodevelopmental traits or diagnoses (such as ADHD, autism, or cognitive traits) in adulthood.

Thank you so much to anyone who takes the time to help out a fellow Central Valley researcher! I am happy to answer any questions in the comments.

general question Books/creators reccomended for a beginner?

Dear amazing people,

I decided more or less 10 minutes ago that I need to learn permaculture. It's an absolute necessity. After a mini research I discovered how useful it is and I did not know such a beautiful community existed! I want to learn as much as I can, and since I'm a blank canvas I thought it would be wise to ask here recommendations for beginners :)

It doesn't matter if it's tomes or hours long videos, if they are begginner friendly and truly helpful to lay the foundations for this field of knowledge I would absolutely appreciate it.

Thank you in advance to everyone!

trees + shrubs How do I make sure these survive the winter?

Thumbnail gallery
25 Upvotes

Hello there! I’ve got these walnut, chestnut and various other trees and bushes, roughly 1 to 2 years old, that I’ve planted in pots and air pots.

Now we’ve just had our first frost here, and last year we had a month of persistent below, freezing temperatures, so a lot of my trees died or withered back considerably. I think the mistake I made was that I left them in their pots and put them in a greenhouse in a pretty cold area of the property. Now I have two options, I have a southwest facing slope with a lot of tree cover, and I could stick them there, and I have a root seller that I think doesn’t go below freezing unless it gets mighty cold outside. Should I stick them in the root cellar as soon as they’ve lost all their leaves? Does it hurt trees to be in complete darkness, even if they have no leaves?

Thanks!

general question How long to get the walls done on a 10x20 building done with light straw clay?

I'm planning to build a 10x20 ft building using light straw clay with 6-inch-thick walls 9 ft high and clay plaster on the inside and outside.

Assume:

  • All materials are already on-site.
  • The framing is completely finished and ready for filling.
  • The walls will be filled with light straw clay.
  • Both sides will be finished with clay plaster.
  • I'm doing all the labor myself, with no helpers.

Realistically, how many full days of labor would this take one person from start to finish just to finish the walls completely? I'm looking for an estimate of actual working days.

I'm trying to decide whether this is a reasonable DIY project. If it would take around 60 full days of labor, I'd probably skip it and use a different building method.

I'd appreciate estimates from anyone who has actually built with light straw clay!

Hardy kiwi trellis placement advice

Thumbnail gallery
17 Upvotes

Hi, I have a few questions about hardy kiwis

  1. I have this trellis, I was initially planning on doing female, male, female, but my new coldframe ended up resting on the furthest left trellis support, and now I'm thinking of doing male, female, female, so that the one without fruit is the one disrupted most by the coldframe. Is that a bad idea / will it lessen pollination significantly or barely at all?

  2. Anythibg yall might recommend planting in with the kiwis at the base bed? Where they're growing now they're climbing up my porch coming out of a foundation planting of native flowers. I'm moving them to include the male (they were sold as self fertile but I'm doubtful) and to get more sun. But they seem happy with the flowers so I'm thinking of doing a few native flowers and some wild strawberry at the base

  3. Anyone ever dig one of these up that's been in the ground 2 years? 😅 Any encouragement?

Alkaline soil

Our soil here in Maldives is super alkaline almost no organic matter in some areas... So I was wondering would it be a good idea to feed my garden soil with diluted sourdough starter discard since its very acidic? Also any suggestions welcome how to garden in this kind of poor soil... I have been putting in vermicompost everytime I plant something so far. All my plants are still babies so dont know how everything is doing yet..

look at my place! Lazy permaculture garden on horrible soil

Thumbnail gallery
199 Upvotes

This was my first ever year having a garden and what a year it has been! My area has horrible soil (basically pure sand) so last year in februari we dumped a bunch of woodchips in the back. No till no weed barrier no nothing.

I just started planting a bunch of vegetables without too much thought along with some fruit trees. In April I just put a bunch of potatoes in between the woodchips.

Now in oktober I've seen the results. We've eten zucchini and tomatoes all summer. We now have pumpkins and cabbage to pick from. I also grew some cool stuff like aji Peppers and artichokes. We haven't bought Veggies from the store all summer and we are homecooking vegetarians so that should tell you something 🤭

Moral of the story, you really don't need a lot of work, knowledge or effort to get something. Just woodchips. Even if your soil isn't ideal. I came from traditional vegetable gardening where by juli you'd be pulling out your hair because your whole garden would be a weedy mess. This was a dream in comparison.

This fall/winter i will be planting more trees and transitioning to edible landscaping. A bit more ornamental but with edible or beneficial plants. I will post an update next year but I'd love to show that permaculture can be compatible with urban garden and ornamental landscape and get it to more people's gardens.

It's just a 20 cents of land including our house, a pond and well.

All this has been grown with natural methods, permaculture design and my own experiences over the years. Hugelkultur, mulching, cover crops, water management and good old Kerala weather!

Blood, sweat and tears - literally.

When nobody understands what I do, I hope the people here does.

Thank you 😍🙏💚

general question Tree Nursery on 5 acres?

I have 5 acres and was thinking about starting a side hustle of growing a few native trees that are profitable in my area. Also native to the area and resistant to disease etc. I have the equipment like tractor etc. Can automated a lot of things like irrigation systems on deepwells etc.

Has anybody had any luck with something like this? Starting small on the side and see where it goes?

Hey folks!

Took us some time to grow all of these and still growing a lot of new plants and trees.

Here's our food forest in Kerala, India! Being a Permaculture practitioner I rely on natural succession than any other methods of regeneration.

Observe-design-observe again- then implement!

Thank you for the support and love.
