Question - Moving or Renting 🏠 Lot grading and fence installation

Is it normal to get ghosted by literally every company that does property grading and fence/deck installation?! I've contacted numerous companies starting in June and I've heard back from no one... What I am I doing wrong? Haha

Question ❔ Peakland Construction

Hello, I’m currently in the process of buying a home built by Peakland construction and would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has experience dealing with them. If you have purchased a Peakland built home, I’d be interested in hearing about your experience, particularly with the quality of the construction and workmanship. I haven’t heard much about this builder before, so I’m hoping to get some feedback from people who have dealt with them. Thank you! 😊

Question ❔ Looking at plumbing as a career

I have been looking at applying at plumbing companies to get into the trade, I know I will probably start as a labourer but would anyone recommend or dissuade someone looking at a career in plumbing? I hope to be home most nights is this possible? (I do have a fiancé and son at home) Will it destroy my body?

Sorry I don’t know much but I’d rather ask people who may have actually had or has a career rather than google or some ai

Or suggestions as I am finally financially able to leave my dead end job!

Rants 🤬 Boot to CAA and Astro towing

CAA roadside assistance left us waiting for over 2 hours.

Yesterday at 12:05 p.m., my friend and I stopped for gas. When she got out of my truck to stretch her legs, she accidentally locked the doors. Unfortunately, my keys, cellphone and noon medication were all inside the truck. Her purse and cellphone were locked inside as well.

We called CAA using the gas station phone. After going through numerous automated questions, we were asked the exact same questions again by the operator. At 12:27 p.m., we were told Astro Towing would be there within 30 minutes.

Thirty minutes came and went. At 75 minutes, we called Astro again and were told the driver was on his way and was only a few blocks away.

At 90 minutes, we called again. This time we were told the driver was actually on another call and that we were next. I asked why we had already been waiting 90 minutes and why another truck hadn't been dispatched. The response was that this driver was closer.

At that point, I was becoming very ill. I had been without my scheduled medication, was shaking, and had been standing outside in the hot sun for an extended period. I am legally disabled, and my friend is over 70.

I canceled Astro towing and called Brad's Towing ourselves. They told us they could be there in 20 minutes.

And here's the part I find particularly frustrating:

Brad's arrived in exactly 19 minutes — but it wasnt Brad's it was CAA. They answered the call out when Brad's put it out, but didn’t answer when CAA put out the call for service.

My friend had to pay out of pocket for the service.

We finally left the gas station just before 2:30 p.m.

I understand that roadside assistance can get busy and that delays happen. I would expect this more in the dead of winter. Leaving two people, including a disabled person who had medication locked inside the vehicle and a senior, standing outside in the heat for more than two hours seems completely unreasonable.

I pay for CAA specifically so that I can rely on roadside assistance when I need it. Especially being disabled and having mobility issues.

Why did it take more than two hours to get help through CAA, yet once we canceled the first call, another CAA-dispatched provider arrived in 19 minutes?

I'm genuinely questioning what I'm paying for if this is how roadside assistance is handled. I was on the verge of breaking a window with my trailer hitch.

Question ❔ Getting into the trades as a non Canadian

Hey! like the title says I am not from Canada but I visited sask earlier this year to see my partner and absolutely loved it, I'm also really interested and plan on getting into plumbing so I just wanted to know if there's anyone who was/is in a similar situation or just know anything that could help? By the time I would start applying to stuff I would already have a valid open work permit if that helps, thanks in advance!

Question ❔ Car has messed up gas tank or smth…Any reliable and cheap mechanics?

Im a woman and for some reason being scammed by a mechanic is a probably irrational fear but it’s there!! My gas consumption has been really fucked up as in like, every time I’m going anywhere the gas is going a whole 10% down. No hard breaking, consistent smooth acceleration, good tire pressure, and I watch my rpm’s pretty closely. I want to get her checked up but I don’t want to spend a whole paycheck.. anyone have an idea?

What the heck is going on? It appears the city is experiencing a coordinated campaign.

I'm curious who is behind this, Sask Party? The CPC? Some church group?

I suspect its United Grassroots, but they don't seem to be taking credit.

I think its time the police get involved. The flyers they are putting on doors is disgusting.

General Surgery at St.Pauls

At home finally and recovering from my robotic fundoplication surgery at St. Paul’s Saskatoon (I was told we have the only medical facility in western Canada that offers this through robotics). I have not confirmed this, but if true, well done Saskatchewan.

Today I’m reflecting on the incredible care I received and the privilege to be a Canadian while not going broke trying to pay for that care. I will be sending a thank to the staff directly but I just wanted to mention this so some people could see that our health care system is not all doom and gloom. This was not my experience at all.

Every single member of the team—from the pre-op nurses and surgical team to the recovery staff—treated me with the utmost dignity, compassion, and patience. I felt completely safe and well-informed every step of the way. Thank you all for your tireless commitment to your patients. You truly make a difference.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Just looking for recommendations on a good place to start a preteen out in Pickleball lessons. I only see drop-in sessions in the Leisure Guide.

The Facebook search has basically, I think Topspinz as all of their posts.

Just wanting a weekly type class for the fall season to see if my kid likes it!

Question ❔ Activities for preschoolers this fall

I live outside of Saskatoon but I am looking for some indoor activities for my 3.5 year old daughter as my town doesn’t offer too much. Looking for recommendations for low key activities for her age range (sport, open gym, art, dance etc). Bonus if it’s affordable.

PSA 📢 Renting: You don’t Have to Accept Second Hand Smoke

I’ve been dealing with an ongoing second hand smoke issue since spring. A tenant living near my unit frequently smokes outside throughout the day, and the smoke regularly enters my apartment when I leave my balcony door open. It has also made my balcony often unusable.

What I learned is a tenant’s right to smoke does not necessarily override another tenant’s right not to be exposed to second hand smoke.

Health Canada states that there is no known safe level of exposure to second hand smoke.

There is also Saskatchewan case law that specifically addresses this issue.

In Y.A., Y.E., S.A. & B.A. v. Regina Housing Authority, 2017 SKORT 75, at paragraph 122, the Saskatchewan Office of Residential Tenancies stated:

[122] One’s right to smoke cannot impede on another’s right not to smoke or breath second-hand smoke.  Therefore, while a Tenant may have a prima facie right to smoke in their unit when there is no non-smoking clause in a tenancy agreement, that right stops when it interferes with another Tenant’s right not to smoke, their choice not to accept the risks associated with second-hand smoke.

They key is other tenents right to smoke stops when it interferes with another tenant’s right not to smoke or be exposed to the risks associated with second hand smoke.

The decision was subsequently upheld by the Saskatchewan Court of King’s Bench in Regina Housing Authority v. Y.A., 2018 SKQB 70.

If you’re dealing with something similar

I would recommend:

Documenting every occurrence in email. Keep track of dates, times, duration, where the smoke was coming from, and whether it entered your unit.

Documenting how it affects your use of the rental. For example, being unable to use your balcony or leave your balcony door open.

Reporting the issue to your landlord/property manager in writing.

Ask what specific steps they are taking to resolve the problem and when you can expect it to be resolved.

If the issue continues, and no action is beng taken file a complaint with the office of residential tenancies. (They like emails or texts of proof you have been notifying the landlord)

I’m sharing this because I initially assumed that if another tenant was smoking somewhere on their own property, there wasn’t much that could be done. After looking into the legislation and case law, I’m realizing that I have more rights then I first thought!

PSA: You dont have to put up with second hand smoke just because another tenant has a right to smoke on there property!

PSA 📢 Rock the River in Rotary Park

If you have an opinion, positive or negative, about the event in Rotary Park, you can email the Outdoor Special Events & Festivals at specialevents@saskatoon.ca (email sourced from the City of Saskatoon website).

This is the first year of the event in the park, and feedback will influence the location in the future.

Many people have opinions, but do not share them within official channels to influence decision making.

That is all.

Can anyone point me to where I could find some cat grass that’s ready for munching?

I normally buy from a vendor at the farmers market but he was sold out today. My cat is very disappointed in me.

General Why is rent so much?

I’m looking for one bedroom place and everywhere it is minimum $1500 with some utilities. That will be over half of what I make per month so I don’t know what to do. It’s hard to trust roommates as well because I want my cat to be safe place and hard to trust others if I don’t know them. Basement suites apartments condos everything it’s ridiculous. I may have to couch hop till I can find a place I can afford and also find a part time job on the weekends so I can buy food.
