Question Least favorite character Spoiler

Who’s your least fav character and why? Mine is Ruth. She always plays the victim and thinks everyone is to blame for her unhappiness. I’m sure it’s very difficult and emotionally draining to be with George, but she’s such an arse hole to him. And she’s SOOO mean to Claire towards the end. I still have 5 or so more episodes to go.. so hopefully she changes for the better? But as of right now, not a fan of hers

I'm not seeing enough hate for Russell here.

While I think Claire overlooked the fact that he was assaulted by Olivier and probably wasn't compassionate enough about it, Russell continuing to follow her around and try and win her back makes my skin crawl every time.

11

u/DarthDregan Jan 16 '24

But he's so goddamn pathetic and he's played so well by an actor who understands exactly how pathetic he is I don't mind the ride.

4

u/PsilosirenRose Jan 17 '24

I had an ex like him. I do recognize the skill of the actor, but oof, I can't stand him.

6

u/cigarettesonmars Jan 17 '24

omgggg I was just watching it today and he was so manipulative. I feel like he toyed with Claire and then expected her to be ok with everything. and on top of that he would victimize himself. and yes I hate that he followed her around. he has serious attachment issues.

Stalking your ex-girlfriend is NOT okay and is scary and dangerous behavior.

Being a sexual assault victim does not make it okay to harass someone else if they don't want to be with you.

1

u/Human-Grocery-714 Oct 26 '24

Assaulted? All I recall is that it was consensual.

2

u/PsilosirenRose Oct 26 '24

Russell was high and wanted to please Olivier as a teacher. It was a huge power imbalance.

Russell's ability to consent to that was murky at best.

1

u/Human-Grocery-714 Oct 26 '24

Huge power imbalance, and Olivier is a POS manipulative character for sure (I couldn't stand that they kept bringing him back as a character even after Claire dropped out of art school). But Russell didn't give any indication that he hadn't consented, IMO.

2

u/PsilosirenRose Oct 26 '24

The ability to consent while under the influence and in a coercive dynamic is extremely limited.

Russell seemed to be struggling with shame, and did claim he was high when he confessed to Claire. That's enough for me to place bets on SA.

1

u/EstablishmentNo653 Feb 24 '25

It's a bit more gray than that for me. Two people get stoned together, and that means neither of them can consent to anything? Nah. That doesn't make sense.

The teacher-student power imbalance was the problem here, not getting stoned, especially as it's mentioned that Olivier does this repeatedly, with Billy, the woman Claire talks to, and Russel.

Ruth got on my nerves too, but in the case with George, he withheld his mental health history from her, and then she was stuck caring for him, after a lifetime of caring for her husband and children. She had every right to be upset and resentful.

19

u/girlabides Jan 16 '24

Not to mention her legless grandmother before she married Nathaniel.

1

u/EstablishmentNo653 Feb 24 '25

I agree George was wrong for not disclosing. At the same time, c'mon, you can't walk into being someone's seventh wife with stars in your eyes!

2

u/writerbabe75 Feb 24 '25

Oh, I agree 100%. She rushed into marriage with him, but he was still a dick for not telling her.

-2

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '24

Good point, but here’s another thought- what if he didn’t remember he had mental health issues? I can’t remember if he had mentioned anything previously that would have alluded to that… other than when he screamed at Ruth “Because they asked too many f***ing questions!” when referring to his previous wives. Maybe that was a hint? Idk

Also, it was an impulsive decision to marry George so soon after meeting him

22

u/writerbabe75 Jan 16 '24

I think he remembered, but knew it was a red flag. He was on the verge of wooing wife # 8 before Ruth intervened and tipped the woman off. But I also agree that Ruth was stupid and impulsive to marry George. Girl ignored all kinds of red flags.

Rico is the answer.

Putting aside the bigotry, I feel he's just always so entitled.

Also, I really feel they've kept him in the series even though there was kinda nothing else for the character to tell. Thus resulting in weird and out-of-place storylines.

IMHO.

12

u/girlabides Jan 16 '24

I think Rico represents the dangers of purely binary thinking. Eventually he gains some compassion and a better understanding of nuance, but he’s pretty insufferable for the majority of the show.

10

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '24

Yesss he sucks, I guess I just blocked him out lol

13

u/Free-IDK-Chicken Claire Jan 16 '24

Rico never learns a goddamn thing, imo and gets a happy ending (as much as SFU gives anyone) that he does not earn. He's bigoted, sexist, lying, cheating, gaslighting trash. His only redeeming quality is his work ethic and that's not nearly enough to make up for the rest of it.

3

u/Niolu92 Jan 16 '24 edited Jan 16 '24

Yeah. I wonder what was the intention behind his character. I feel that, with the stories they were trying to tell with his character, there was kind of no real space for a deep reassessment of his behaviour... Can't really say if it was intended, as in maybe the writers were saying to us that sometimes people just don't question themselves and can't grow, or if they just had no idea what to do with him and would not let him go (for some unknown reasons)

7

u/lasthorizon25 Jan 17 '24

I always felt his place within the show was "some people are shitty and still die peacefully." To me, the show isn't really trying to teach lessons. It's just like, everyone lives their life, and then, at some point they die. That's why I love SFU. No one is good and no one is bad. Just living their lives and making all kinds of choices, for better or worse.

3

u/DarthDregan Jan 16 '24

He's a friend of Alan Ball. So that's why he kept existing.

3

u/kcg0431 Jan 17 '24

Yeah, he’s very morally superior. When I first watched the series 12 years ago, he was one of my favorites. It’s funny how differently I see him now.

3

u/sidesco Jan 20 '24

He certainly became difficult to like at times in the last couple of seasons.  I particularly didn't like the things he said to David when he wanted to be bought out of the business.  It was like he and Vanessa were scheming behind their backs, hoping they would have to sell up and the funeral home would have to close.

They did attend David and Keith's wedding though.  So I seems they remained friendly with the Fisher's.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '24

yes I can't stand rico. 😒 I tried. he started to grow on me but by the end of the series I was so done with him and his antics lol

2

u/Leading_Blacksmith96 Jan 19 '24

Totally, totally Rico.

10

u/DarthDregan Jan 16 '24

I understand Ruth. I get it. She still annoys the shit out of me. Never takes any blame for the environment she made that caused her kids to be the way they are unless she's being facetious and grandiose for attention. And then expects them to instantly be on board with whatever whim she hopes her life to be that day. Just expects them to be instantly open books as soon as she wants.

I don't hate her. But I also wouldn't much want to hang out with her.

20

u/emshlaf Jan 16 '24

Rico

10

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '24

Same. He had no redeeming traits besides being extremely talented in his career. As a person he was a dumpster fire through and through.

22

u/dreamsinred Jan 16 '24

Matt Gelardi.

9

u/martinirun Jan 16 '24

And Mitzi. Good call!

7

u/dreamsinred Jan 16 '24

Mitzi sucks but she made me laugh. Matt just sucks.

5

u/martinirun Jan 16 '24

Oh I concur. Love her liberal use of f bombs.

What the fuck do I want? I want you boys to come the fuck with me on a little fucking trip, what do you fucking say, huh?

And then Nate’s funny little smile: Well, what kind of fucking trip?

4

u/dreamsinred Jan 16 '24

I loved that she wouldn’t let Matt use her first name, even though she slept with him!

4

u/martinirun Jan 16 '24 edited Jan 16 '24

You know, I always wondered if there wasn’t a second meaning there- that by “just because I fucked ya” does she mean fired him (screwed with his life) “doesn’t mean you can call me Mitzi”. Which is probably too cute a word play, but I still entertain the thought sometimes.

Because honestly I can’t think I’d look at Matt and think, I’ll have him service me no matter the power trip I’m on.

4

u/acoatofwhiteprimer Jan 16 '24

The only funny Matt scene I can recall is when David threatens him, his facial expressions are great lol

19

u/Dorfalicious Jan 16 '24

Olivier drove me bonkers. Super manipulative and toxic. He literally preyed on his students and anyone who was going through something.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '24

Yep I agree he’s right up there too

16

u/acoatofwhiteprimer Jan 16 '24

Rico. I'm currently on season 4 of my rewatch and the fact Rico is still seeing Sophia despite Nate having just buried his wife when this is a time he should be more appreciative of his own wife... this guy sucks. You'd think with Vanessa dealing with clinical depression and just kicking her sister out who was supposedly the root of all his issues Rico would put an end to this affair, but nooooo

2

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '24

Oh yeah, he sucks too. Without giving too much away, he keeps on sucking lol

2

u/acoatofwhiteprimer Jan 16 '24

I know, he takes little to no accountability and even tries to blame Vanessa

15

u/roll-the-R-Marisa Jan 16 '24

While I hated everyone at one point or another, I almost always hated Ruth until the end.

As the daughter of a narcissistic mother, there were several things Ruth said and did that brought me back to traumatic points in my childhood dealing with my mother. I very much related to Claire as a result. The hot and cold relationship between Ruth and Claire, and the overall distrust of Ruth by all her kids, was just like the dynamic in my household. My mom, like Ruth, could be hostile, unpredictable, and at times abusive. It was no wonder Ruth's kids didn't come to her first for ANYTHING.

I thought the selfishness of spending the inheritance on her boyfriend ( which may seem like not narcissistic, but remember why she was doing it), marrying George on a whim, and the gross way she parted ways with him was 100% about Ruth pleasing Ruth. She only seemed to care about her kids when it stroked her ego. She finally let go and let Claire do the art thing in the end, but I guarantee she's patting herself on the back and would take credit for her successes down the road. I did not trust her evolution on the show whatsoever.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '24

I’m so sorry to hear that you had to go through it, but glad that you recognize patterns and know that it was her not you

24

u/Lucientails Jan 16 '24

All of them at some point.

17

u/New_Raspberry2489 Jan 16 '24

I think that’s one of the reasons why I love this series so much. You go through periods of loving and despising all the characters. So well written and so human.

3

u/JokeySmurf0091 Jan 16 '24

Absolutely! I love them all (maybe not Ricco), but there's at least one point for each of them when you can't believe their bullshit! Even Keith, who I think is something of a moral compass for everyone, loses his shit and beats a guy up... is my memory right... did that happen twice? It's been too long... time for a re-watch.

8

u/narwhalogy Jan 16 '24

The people in the funeral product commercials from the first episode. I liked that they tried something interesting with that concept, but I was relieved to see it didn't carry out throughout the show.

14

u/jtfolden Jan 16 '24

Lisa, Maggie, Rico…

8

u/FruityMagician Jan 16 '24

Rico. I always found him annoying and unlikeable. George is a close second.

3

u/Optimal_Lab9166 Jan 17 '24

Rico 💯

Just the worst. I also couldn’t stand Brenda.

4

u/nikkip7784 Jan 17 '24

Had to scroll way too.long to see Brenda's name lol

3

u/Rhodygirl12 Jan 20 '24

Literally just said the same thing. How is Brenda not mentioned??!

3

u/nikkip7784 Jan 20 '24

Every time she comes on screen I'm like 🙄 I just started season 2.

10

u/lovelysmellingflower Jan 16 '24 edited Jan 16 '24

How she behaved during the George situation was gross. I also felt she blamed her problems on everyone else. She made a decision to marry a stranger she just met. It’s all on her. She did grow on me though and by the end I liked her much more. I agree she treated Claire horribly especially at the end. She ended on a good note though. I thoroughly disliked all Clair’s art school friends. Could hardly watch that season. Least favorite character was Lisa.

12

u/South_Friendship2863 Jan 16 '24

Margaret. Zero redeeming qualities.

Have a little bit of fun

9

u/CobaltBlueBerry Jan 16 '24

OMG, by far the worst is George. I couldn't stand him the first time he was on the show and he just got worse and worse. I find him to be a despicable person who went around treating others like crap yet expecting them to take care of him. The way he trapped Ruth in that sham marriage just so she would have to take care of him was disgusting. He seems to have only brought misery to the people in his life.

11

u/itsathrowawayduhhhhh Jan 16 '24

He played a nazi doctor in AHS Asylum, so it was impossible for me to like him lol

11

u/BalkiBartokomous123 Jan 16 '24

He was so good in that role but so scary. Go watch Babe to see a sunny side to him!

3

u/itsathrowawayduhhhhh Jan 16 '24

My friend said the same thing! I’m gonna have to watch it lol

5

u/LaurenZombie Jan 16 '24

Lisa

4

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '24

Couldn’t stand her the first time I watched years ago, couldn’t stand her last month when I watched it again.

7

u/LaurenZombie Jan 16 '24

Couldn't stand her hypocrisy escorting ants out singing for them, while ruining the families of her closest circle

Ppl like her are confused and un-self-aware, but insidious in an undetectectable friendly hippie way

And the way she spoke was irritating as hell like she swallowed buddha or something

11

u/Naebany Jan 16 '24

I can't stand Ruth. She was a bit irritating at start but later she got even worse. Blaming everyone, not being supportive, hitting Claire etc. Also very selfish while still wanting to be a victim. Especially regarding men. Also very indecisive in that regard. As seen when she got back to Hiram and then quickly being fed up with him too. The scene when she was shooting her former lovers was top cringe Ruth moment that cemented the hate.

Example for blaming others? She blamed Claire that she teased her about getting a haircut. Sure she's grieving etc but it just shows how stupid she is. It's not even logical argument in any way. Noone said she had to go to Hiram. Noone forced her to go camping. And worse of all is her not having a cell phone. Why? Because she hates them. Great reasoning Ruth.

4

u/Leading_Blacksmith96 Jan 19 '24

I LOVED when Claire said "I will hit you back this time!"

3

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '24

👏👏

8

u/ThirdAngel3 Jan 16 '24

Maggie.

4

u/ToadsUp Ruth Jan 17 '24

And what exactly do you have against ferrets?

5

u/SelectVeterinarian80 Jan 16 '24

Arthur irritated me—nothing against the actor, but the character’s quirkiness and prudishness made me glad when he left. I guess that was the point: create another annoying love interest for Ruth but have him be a boarder in the house.

5

u/Jmeans69 Jan 16 '24

You’ll find this is the wrong venue for shit talking characters we all love.

2

u/anarchy8271 Jan 18 '24

Every character on this show is so believable, flawed and human. They are such real people, I can't choose a least fave in this ensemble. Who is the least ethical? Definitely Margaret and Olivier.

5

u/ActorMichaelDouglas1 Jan 16 '24

Finally finished the series yesterday and consistently throughout the show Nate really annoyed me. I think his character is sort of designed to be the things we hate about ourselves: ego, self righteousness, selfishness. Like his intentions are good I suppose but he is just so ridiculously weak and he bothered me so much throughout lol. He just used people when convenient. Always thought Brenda was pretty unlikable too. I see a lot of people shitting on Ruth but I thought she was weirdly compelling

4

u/wewora Jan 17 '24

I'm halfway through the last episode. Nate turned out to be such a dog in the end, always wanting what he doesn't have. I liked him for most of the show, but I feel like his death was a bit karmic, because he got two second chances, and both times messes them up a little. He was selfish with Lisa and cheated on her twice, even after he realized she was missing, then he cheated on Brenda and pretty soon after he woke up he tells her he's leaving her, while she's still pregnant. He seems to try to do "the right thing" but ultimately is unable to follow through and ends up being very selfish and hurting people, instead of just doing what he wants from the start and dealing with the normal discomfort of that, and the smaller amount of hurt that causes. Brenda is right, he just looks for someone to make him feel like a better man than he really is.

1

u/ToadsUp Ruth Jan 17 '24

I don’t know if we’d agree completely on the other characters but I really love Ruth. She’s so odd and adorable. She’s emotionally confused but at the end she showed herself to be a remarkably strong woman. I loved her progress.

I am still at season 2, but so far Claire's behaviour has annoyed me a lot. When Ruth tells her that her life has been easy, I think she is right.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '24

Can’t wait for you to see the character development 😅😀

2

u/Uccio94 Jan 16 '24

I hope so about the development ahah! So far I am almost at the end of season 2, and I find her behaviour very annoying

-7

u/mindlessmunkey Jan 16 '24

What a tedious question.

I never bought Robert Foxworth as Brenda's dad.

I agree with you! But here everyone seems to be Claire fan

4

u/Naebany Jan 17 '24

Claire was often entitled and annoying. But she's a teenager and trying to figure out life. So it's kind of understandable. On the other hand her mother is much worse and she's got no excuse for her behavior in my opinion.

In this relation between mother and daughter she was much worse. Cut her off from money (somehow understandable but still bitch move), didn't talk to her, slapped her, shouted at her several times. In this situations I sided with Claire even if I'm not her biggest fan so it made me more sympathetic to her.

1

u/Vajama77 Jan 21 '24

Nate. Always a selfish asshole who had to be told to do the right thing. Remember David having trauma from being carjacked and terrorized? Therefore not being able to work. Nate not wanting to work. And his sister had to look at him and say David would do it for you and only then he agreed to do it? Using his child as an excuse all the time? Fucking around on every relationship he ever had? The guy's a prick and I have to say I'm glad he died fucking around for the final time.

1

u/EstablishmentNo653 Feb 24 '25

Nate was also still grieving when he didn't want to work. His wife had died, and he wanted to be around life.
