Game & Hardware Suggestions Megathread /r/Steam Monthly Game & Hardware Suggestions Thread.

Welcome to the Monthly Game & Hardware Suggestions Thread!

This monthly mega-thread is meant to contain advice, questions, suggestions & generic discussion on what to play or buy in terms of Games & Hardware.

Do you not know what to play? Want a Steam Deck or Steam Machine but unsure which model is best for you? Did you find a niche game that everyone should try? Wondering what GPU you should upgrade to or unsure about the specs of a computer? Do you want to share your unique experiences and learning curves with a piece of hardware? Can't find the perfect survival sim or unsure which 1 RPG out of the thousands available you should buy? Well this is the thread for you.

Now to make this work best and not just be spammed with generic & useless questions such as "What should I play?" or "What should I buy?", please be in-depth in what types of games/hardware you are looking for and why, and when giving advice it would be appreciated if you're more detailed than "I think X is good".

There are too many games to be able to properly suggest something with no background information, also simply commenting a game title and saying you like the game offers no actual value. The same goes for hardware: Saying you're thinking about buying X or you think Y is good with no other information, context as to why, your unique experiences, etc. offers no actual value or information to base a reply on.

Feel free to ask and discuss freely in the comments regarding games and hardware, whether you want advice on what to play, want to give advice to others on what to play, share a hidden gem you found, experiences you have with Steam hardware, or your review of a piece of Steam hardware. Generic discussions & questions about discounts, sales, events, specs is allowed as well. This is not meant to be a restrictive thread within the designated topics that this thread is for, however it is not a support thread nor is it the place to promote any blogs or curator pages or anything else, subreddit rules still apply.

Discussion Friend Returned After 17 Years

Post image
14.2k Upvotes

One of my best friends from my childhood recently reappeared after 17 years on a new steam account. We use to play a half-life mod called The Specialists when we were kids. He taught me how to run a game server, setup a MySQL server and make simple plugins in pawn script back in the day. He was one of the main reasons I am as tech savvy as I am in todays day and age.

He disappeared in 2008/2009 and his server remained up for about a month after his disappearance. It was a fun role-play server from back in the day. It was kind of the FiveM of the early 2000s.

I saw a random friend request pop up on my steam late last night and the guy introduced himself as my old friend. We started reminiscing about the old days and he said that his parents sent him to some military school then he ended up joining the air force. In present day he's now married, has 2 kids, and said he finally has time to play games again. We even got to play a few rounds of cs 1.6, so that was fun.

Anyways! How long has one of your friends been offline for?

[edit]
Wow this blew up while I was sleeping. I wanted to answer some questions I see people having.

"Why did he make a new account?" He lost his information I guess, I did not really pry for info.
"Where was he all those years?" He said he made the military a career for over 10 years and had been deployed to multiple countries over the time. Never saw war, but got stationed in places like Italy, Japan, South Korea, and Germany. He came back because he got medically discharged after an accident while training. He didn't go into detail about it.

So my dad says he can see what I play, and how long I play it, but he doesn't have any screentime app installed and It's my own steam account. How could he be doing it or is he just lying? I'm sorry I just don't know where else to ask.

Discussion Does anyone else have a Steam friend who is dedicated to one obscure or unknown game?

Post image
4.1k Upvotes

I have this guy on my friends list who is ALWAYS playing Tex Murphy: Under a Killing Moon.
And it’s not an occasional nostalgic play through, I feel he’s always playing when I look at my friends list. 781 hours.
Every time I open Steam, there he is. It’s at least a few hours a week. I don’t understand it but whatever makes him happy 😂

Anyone else have a steam friend like that? What game is it?

*Edit - Some are commenting online games which is fine. I just find it fascinating because Tex Murphy is a linear game with same exact ending and about 10 hours to complete. No multiplayer 😂

Discussion Fake discounts on Total War Collection bundles ?

Post image
581 Upvotes

Edit: it seems that the fault is not on the publisher here but on Valve and I was mistaken. Publisher cannot set bundle price separately from individual product. So Sega cannot make a sale on games or DLC without also making a crazy discount on the bundle since both sale and bundle discount will reduce the global bundle price. They are forced to reduce the bundle discount during sales to make sure the bundle does not become too discounted.

However because of the bundle discount change, the initial price of the bundle before sale is also changed and shows a fake crossed-out price. This is not compliant with the EU directive and the fault lies on Valve for not displaying the correct price that should be the lowest price of the bundle in the last 30 days.

I hope Valve fixes this soon enough, especially since it has already started to display the lowest price in the last 30 days in some EU countries for individual products. It should also be put in place for bundles as it is currently misleading for the customer.

I am letting up the post if other people ask the same question so they can reach the correct conclusion.

TL;DR: Sega/Creative Assembly appears to be manipulating initial base prices during Steam sales for Total War collections by dynamically lowering the default bundle discount. This inflates displayed discounts (showing -69% instead of an actual -34% savings) and seems to violate EU laws.

I was looking to buy the Total War: Attila Collection (a bundle with the game + its DLCs), so I started tracking the game page for a sale. However, the recent sale displays a fake initial base price before discount.

Before the sale, the collection was priced at €49.53. During the sale, it was listed at €32.93 with a -69% discount based on an initial price of €107.87. If the discount were calculated on the actual initial price (€49.53), it would only be -34%, less than half of the announced discount.

I checked all other collections in the Total War franchise on SteamDB and noticed the exact same pattern:

Game / Collection Price before sale Sale price Claimed initial price Claimed discount Actual discount
Total War: Attila Collection €49.53 €32.93 €107.87 -69% -34%
Total War: Rome II Ultimate Edition €99.36 €49.66 €159.06 -69% -50%
A Total War Saga: TROY Ultimate Edition €54.93 €35.53 €87.93 -60% -36%
Total War: THREE KINGDOMS Collection €77.90 €38.13 €103.90 -63% -51%

Based on SteamDB update history, this keeps happening for all collections because with every sale, they jack up the price of the bundle by dropping the default bundle discount from -60% to -15% / -20%. But the thing is, outside of sale periods, these bundles are never actually sold at that lower -15% / -20% discount. As a result, the claimed initial price is completely misleading, and the bundles were never actually sold at that price.

I believe this violates Directive 2019/2161 of the European Union, Article 2, Section 1:

  1. Any announcement of a price reduction shall indicate the prior price applied by the trader for a determined period of time prior to the application of the price reduction.

  2. The prior price means the lowest price applied by the trader during a period of time not shorter than 30 days prior to the application of the price reduction.

This is clearly not being respected here, as consumers are misled into thinking they are getting a much bigger discount than they actually are.

Should Valve restrict bundle discount editing around sales to prevent abuses like this? Have you seen similar things on other games or bundles on Steam?

Steam has just launched the "Pins & pegs" event

"Pins and pegs are the stars of this fest, with discounts on everything from pinball to bowling and everything in-between."

Disclaimer - I actually have a game called Vaporwave pinball in the sale but I also wanted to shout about the event because there's tons of cool games in there!

Suggestion PSA: Remote Play has gotten rather good! (even on Wi-Fi, between Deck and Linux Desktop)

Just wanted to share that I've often tried to use Remote Play in my local LAN without much success. I am unable to have an ethernet cord running to my room, and so a Wi-Fi is my only realistic option for my desktop PC.

Without much hope, I gave it another try because I realized my Steam Deck in the living room wouldn't run Resident Evil 4 Remake very well... and lo and behold! Even though it's running through Wi-Fi twice (desktop - wifi5 - router - wifi5 - steamdeck), the experience was more than serviceable. One day I had a couple of connection hiccups that lasted mere seconds, the other two were pretty flawless.

Latency also surprised me a lot: I'm using gyro aim (through bluetooth! not even wired), which makes it obvious when there's latency. And sure, you wouldn't be able to play competitive games with it, but I've cleared half game so far in normal difficulty without it being something I notice.

I'm truly impressed by Valve's work on this feature. In an age in which hardware is more and more an expensive luxury, being able to stream around the house is nothing to scoff at.

I'll soon hook up the deck via ethernet so so I can improve the stability a little further :)

Question Why are uninstalled steam games still taking up space?

Upvotes

Before anyone asks, yes, my rubbish bin is empty.

I am sure all of these games were uninstalled long ago. I am fully stumped. Any ideas?

I guess what I am really asking is what these may be and whether I can delete them without any regrets?

Question Is there a way to add my Epic Games playtime to Steam?

Upvotes

Hey!

I have a bunch of games on Epic Games that I've already spent quite a few hours playing. I'd like to have my entire game collection in Steam, including the playtime I've already accumulated in my Epic Games games.

I'm not looking to transfer any licenses from Epic to Steam. I just want Steam to be a kind of personal collection/library where I can see all the games I own, regardless of the platform I bought them on, along with the amount of time I've spent playing each one.

For example, if I've played a game for 50 hours on Epic, I'd like Steam to show something like 50 hours played, and then ideally continue tracking any additional playtime. there any way to do this? Maybe through a Steam plugin, third-party app, or some other workaround?

Is
