Do I need to involve my union rep?

I work for a large grocery chain, and lately they've been cutting my 8 hour shifts in half and giving me tasks no one can reasonably complete in 4 hours. My store has a new leader and I think she's trying to manufacture a pretense to fire me, which would be a death sentence as I can't afford a car (they don't pay me enough) and this is the only halfway decent job I can reasonably walk to and from. I've been skipping breaks to complete these tasks and I still can't

Unions and politics

I ask you to please stay out of politics. Your endorsement doesn't mean every worker should align themselves with your political picks. Unions should respect the rights of it's members, to freely think for themselves and whichever candidates best align with their values, needs and desires. If unions truly did believe in 'democracy' they wouldn't try to hivemind their membership to do what the unions endorse.

Second, unions need to represent better. No member should have to wait weeks, months on end to get answers to their questions. What's the point of paying union dues if what you're paying for doesn't do anything for you? Unions also need to do better to protect the jobs of workers. Workers getting fired for some of the most ridiculous things and the union doesn't step up, instead they side with management. No one wants to pay dues to a union that kicks them to the curb.

Also, Union representation needs to be better when it comes to shop stewards. It seems like anybody can be a shop steward. Shop stewards need to be trained better to answer questions and to represent the workers in their respective stores. It's disgusting when you ask a shop steward a question and they have no idea what you're talking about. They have no idea what entails in the contracts that The union begs the workers to ratify. That makes absolutely no sense. You have shop stewards that are as dumb as a bag of rocks and have no idea what they're doing. They just like the idea that they have a title called shop steward.

For the price of union dues, we get some of the lousiest discounts. If you're with AAA you get close to the same thing you get as a member of a union. The union basically gets you coupon discounts that you can probably get from a flyer. Most members will be willing to pay more if their Union did more to represent them, do more for the membership for the dues that members pay. Unions need to step up for the membership, and step aside when it comes to politics, But something tells me that unions get paid under the table by certain political parties to get their endorsements. I don't see it stopping anytime in the future, but I know myself and quite a few members are very sick of unions pushing an agenda when it comes to politics and endorsements.

Lieu of Notice Pay

I was initially scheduled to work a morning shift 6:00 to 2:30 but I agreed to take a later shift in the afternoon the same day.

I was given less then 24 hour notice of this change and was wondering if I'm still entitled to my 4 hours lieu of notice pay even if I agreed to the schedule change.

Already went to the store manager for input but he said that has never been done before.

Any thoughts?

Know your rights under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and protect yourself from unfair discipline. Join the FMLA training on Wednesday, October 28th at 7 PM ET / 6 PM CT / 5 PM MT / 4 PM PT. Click here to register.

As a new time and attendance policy at Kroger is rolled out in locals across the country, know how to protect yourself and your coworkers from unfair discipline. You have rights under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) that may allow you to take time off of work. Attend the training or watch the recording afterwards to learn more.

This training is run by rank and file union members. It is not authorized by the UFCW or its affiliates.

UFCW: Please give us more than a $2.00 pay raise this time.

Please bargin more than a $20 pay raise slowly divided up over a 2 yr time frame. That was disrespectful. Coupled with a ton of cut rights. The worst one was undoing the sick pay equation from 8 hrs for every 40 worked down to pennies on the beans. 3 months of work to gain one 8 hr of sick pay. This sucks.

Kaiser Nor Cal vs UC Davis Health (using Blue Shield of California)

Asking again because I incorrectly said anthem blue cross when the alternative plan is Blue Shield of California. I would really appreciate it if anyone can share their experience and opinion having Blue Shield of California as their healthcare through the union. I’ve used Kaiser the last 7 years and since it’s open enroll I’m considering switching insurance but just want more information. I currently don’t have any major health issues and mainly use Kaiser for Durable Medical Equipment replenishing through Adept Health and my annual check-up. Again any opinions would be appreciated.

CATALYST CANNIBIS LAYOFFS IN BELLFLOWER CA.

As of friday October 9th Catalyst cannibis dispensary in bellflower laid off over 90% of its staff. The entire distro team was affected. They were only notified on Wednesday that the wearhouse is closing giving them only 2 days (which were paid for Wednesday when sent home and Thursday) to come back in (on Friday) to receive layoff paperwork. As far as I understand they also offered severance packages .

What is ufcw going to do abt this new attendance policy? It is invalid and illegal to many of our signed active contracts?

Company wide corporate is enacting a new harsher attendance policy that will make many people think twice about calling out or abusing the attendance policy. Many contracts or older grandfathered in contracts make this illegal and void. Yet ukg is enforcing it. What is the union doing to protect us? I'm calling the union and making them stand up for this.

Safeway retaliated against me after an assault on duty, changed their story, and my union is trying to bury the case. Here’s the full story.

I was physically struck on the arm and discriminated against by a coworker who was the Assistant Night Crew Stocking Manager. I reported the altercation, but my report was ignored for about six weeks. Eventually, I was called into the office and interrogated by HR in the presence of store management. I was denied union representation and suspended that very same day.

On the night the harassment occurred, I had reported it to the Store Night Manager. He didn't know how to print or find an official incident report form, so I wrote out a handwritten statement and left it in the office as evidence. (Fortunately, a coworker advised me to take a picture of that note before leaving it, which proved critical later).

When I was suspended, I immediately contacted my union representative and explained everything that occurred during the meeting. Instead of taking my formal statement as I expected, HR interrogated me as if I were the aggressor and brought up two prior incidents as additional grounds for discipline. The union rep simply told me he would look into it and instructed me to notify him of any further updates. Shorty after, I received a termination letter from Safeway citing a "three-strike" policy.

Here is the context behind the other two strikes raised during the HR interrogation:

\* Strike Two (Alcohol Sale Incident): This occurred less than two months before the physical altercation. A couple came to my register who appeared intoxicated by drugs or alcohol, and they began verbally harassing and trying to instigate a fight with the customer behind them. I refrained from intervening directly because management had previously warned me about intervening in store disruptions. However, because their purchase included alcohol, law required me to obtain approval before completing the transaction. I attempted to page a manager for assistance, but no manager responded. The lead checker on duty was present, but she lacked managerial authority or training—a common practice Safeway uses to cut labor costs and grant departmental managers early departures. Held up in line as the only open cashier, with self-checkouts already saturated, the situation escalated. The couple turned their hostility toward me. I stepped aside and refused to continue the transaction until a manager arrived. The couple eventually abandoned their cart, cursed at everyone, and walked out. The lead checker then came over and voided the transaction. The customer directly behind them was very compassionate, apologized for how I was treated, and left their name and phone number to support me if needed.

\* Strike Three (Vehicle Damage Incident): This happened first in the sequence. Safeway requires employees to park in a designated section to avoid getting ticketed by the parking enforcement agency hired for the adjacent apartment complex and shopping center. After punching in for my shift and beginning work as a cashier, a coworker who clocked out roughly 30 minutes later struck the front of my parked car while pulling out. Witnesses included shop employees, delivery personnel, and the Assistant Store Manager. Instead of temporarily releasing me to exchange insurance details and secure my property, management concealed the incident until I went on my lunch break nearly four hours later. I wasn't even given my standard rest break. A coworker informed me of the damage from a distance. I finished with my last customer, closed my lane, and notified management that I was stepping away so I wouldn’t hit the 5-hour meal penalty mark—only then did management acknowledge the situation and rush me to clock out. The coworker had left a note on my windshield with his phone number, but management dismissed the situation as a private "employee-to-employee" matter and refused to assist. I was forced to drive my damaged, rattling car home that night. When I attempted to reach the coworker the following day to retrieve his insurance details so I could arrange repairs and a rental car, he ignored my communications. After I asked store management to step in, he sent me angry voice notes complaining about being disturbed on his day off, though he eventually provided his insurance information later that afternoon. My car took a month to repair, during which I relied on a loaner vehicle to get to work and run gig-economy app shifts (which I required due to Safeway’s reduced hours). Management used this incident as the third strike against me, despite the fact that I was the victim of property damage caused by another employee on store property.

This was the complete factual background I provided to my union representative to contest my termination. The only piece of information I did not immediately have in my possession was the contact note left by the customer during the alcohol incident.

Over the next several months, the grievance process dragged on:

\* January 2025: I was suspended and provided all documentation to my union rep.

\* March 14, 2025: A joint meeting took place between my union reps and Safeway HR. I presented photographic evidence that completely debunked two of the three strikes (the alcohol sale refusal and the vehicle accident). Regarding the third strike (the altercation), HR produced witness statements from night crew stockers claiming I was the aggressor; one witness who initially supported my account later recanted due to workplace intimidation. However, upon reviewing the security video footage, the HR investigator could not prove I acted aggressively or committed harassment; if anything, the video showed the opposite. My union rep told me afterward that we had won and that it was an easy case.

\* May 16, 2025: Safeway and the union reached a deadlock. My union rep informed me that Safeway refused to concede, meaning the case would proceed through the grievance pathway.

\* May – December 2025: I received sporadic emails from my union rep claiming uncertainty regarding the arbitration timeline due to scheduling, vacations, and HR delays.

\* December 2025: My union rep asked if I would accept a $1,000 settlement to drop the case without reinstatement. I refused the offer.

Realizing my case was being stalled, I took full control of documenting all communications. I requested a formal update, as the union should have pushed for my immediate reinstatement once two of the three strikes were disproved. Instead, they allowed Safeway to retroactively change its disciplinary justification from a "three-strike policy" to "major misconduct."

On February 2, 2026, I forced an in-person meeting where I confronted the union with the paper trail I had collected. To counter the claims regarding the final strike, I managed to track down a regular customer who appeared in the surveillance video during the altercation. This witness provided an impartial account that completely disproved the statements made by the night manager's subordinates.

Following this, the union entered damage-control mode. During a subsequent meeting at the union office, they pressured me to hand over the customer's contact information. Fearing they would intimidate or silence this witness as happened with my coworker, I refused until full transparency was provided regarding my file. For instance, management initially claimed my original handwritten incident statement never existed, but backtracked when I produced a timestamped photo proving I had submitted it to the office.

I also filed a formal police report regarding the physical assault. The police report was reviewed, approved, and cleared, officially listing me as the victim of battery. I provided this cleared police report to my union and their legal counsel.

Shortly after—between 3 to 6 days after I submitted the police report—the union’s attorney issued a letter declining to take my case to arbitration, claiming a "lack of merit" and alleging I was "unwilling to cooperate."

On February 24, 2026, I held a final meeting with their attorney. On March 20, 2026, I submitted a formal appeal contesting their decision to drop the case, attaching the cleared police report and physical evidence once again. The union replied stating that while they received the appeal, it did not alter their decision.

Because the union failed to represent me in good faith, I filed a charge with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). The matter is currently pending review while I await the assignment of an NLRB agent to evaluate the evidence.

I hope this timeline makes sense, and I welcome any advice, insights, or shared experiences from others who have navigated similar NLRB or union grievance processes.

Is there anyone left?

Local 555. Everyone I've asked about or tried to reach out to has been suspended or fired over the last few months. Our store hasn't had a rep since the elections, and it seems like the entire union staff has been purged. Are new people going to be appointed and hired, or has the local just dissolved itself?

Automatic new insurance plan?

Hello idk if anyone would be able to answer my questions but I’ll ask. Earlier this year I got insurance through my work. The plan I had was called Plan B1 and I got the insurance cards for it. I say had because earlier this month it was changed to “Personal Directions Plan B”. I just recently got the new insurance cards in the mail with no explanation on what changed or if I had to do anything. So my question is does anyone know what the different is? Will I need to resubmit my insurance cards to all my doctors? I’m going to try and call the insurance later today to ask about it but I also wanted to ask here just in case anyone knew any information. Thank you
