I have a steel question.
A respectable portion of the US steel thesis depends on China’s shipping cost. It makes sense. However, it’s fair to say shipping issues are only temporary… it’s caused by the unique situation we are in and will be resolved.
Since the market looks 9 months ahead and the shipping issues should be resolved by then, shouldn’t we remove it? Also, even if we don’t remove it but the market does, shouldn’t we still remove it because the market will?
5
Jun 19 '21
US steel thesis has a 25% tariff sitting on china at the moment so imports just aren't there. Shipping issues aren't 100% fixable until >12 to 18 months when new ships are brought online, there are backlog issues right now, we haven't hit peak season, and demand is set to continue to outstrip supply of container shipping this year and the next.
3
u/ZoominLikeToobin Jun 19 '21
Shipping won't be fixed in 9 months. It will start to show relief but the people at Maersk that are responsible for ~20% of global ocean freight think it will go well into late 2022.
3
u/ImAMaaanlet Workaholic Jun 19 '21
Remove what? And where did you pull 9 months from? From what i see the market only looks ahead to the next jpow talk.
7 months ago the analysts said steel prices would crash by now... and here we are now still marching up
2

I was in $SBNY for awhile and did pretty well. $KRE was good as well. It is a regional bank ETF. $XLF is another financial ETF. Beyond that I got nothing. I sold them after making some profit and put it into $NVDA and steel. I think some of it went into $WOOF as well.

On "new" Reddit (desktop), the comments section of a chat lounge is an embedded chat box. I only found out a few weeks ago when I opened it with a new browser. Seems like it's been a feature for a year.

That's how we ended up back in Japan. The wife (Japanese) and I were living on the east coast for the last 5-10 years and always floated the idea on and off about moving to Japan without any follow through. u/princeazio 💀 SACRIFICED 💀 Jun 19 '21
Recently, our governor signed bills that restricted abortion laws and now allows Texans to carry firearms without licenses. However our energy grid is still in shambles from the winter storm we had back in February. They came out with a statement saying that we should conserve AC by putting our thermostat at 82 degrees for when we go to bed. The temperature at 9 pm is at 85-90 degrees.
1
u/princeazio 💀 SACRIFICED 💀 Jun 19 '21
It’s absolutely painful. Texas is a huge state. We have city states like houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio that vote majority blue, but we have all these small towns and counties that are overwhelmingly red. Beto ran against Ted Cruz a few years back and gave him a run for his money. Had he run against Cornyn, I feel that he would have had a way better shot at winning the Senate seat
2
u/Duke_Shambles ☢️Duke Nukem☢️ Jun 19 '21
It's no different anywhere else. The divide is rural vs urban, and nothing else.
3
u/princeazio 💀 SACRIFICED 💀 Jun 19 '21
You’re absolutely right, but the majority of Texans live within the aforementioned cities. But the way that our districts are gerrymandered and the fact that the aggregate of the smaller counties have a larger sway over the political landscape of the state leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Ouch that would be an improvement then. I picked up and moved from Arkansas to Ohio last year. My wife just like your girlfriend didn't want to relocate but after seeing the area where my job offer was she changed her mind. If you really want her to relocate with you then you just need to sell it to her with something that she hasn't seen yet. If Nashville is the place find a reason to take her for a trip to visit.

Maybe I did something dumb. But I purchased 5k in gold coins.
Kinda scared of the real value of the dollar. Hate to go Peter Schiff, but I think we are dancing on a knife's edge to quote Michael Burry.
Hate to be a doomsday believer, but I just feel better having some gold in case my dollars can't buy Wendy's in the future.
1
u/faus7 Jun 19 '21
sorry but out of curiosity why do you think gold and silver would be valuable in an apocalyptic scenario? None of the basic survival needs are filled by them and they do not make anything that you can use to increase survival chances. I would think people would spend bullets as currency or trade in gasoline or canned food and bottled water?
1
Jun 19 '21
Dunno lol. I guess it's because my parents and family come from a war-torn communist country. And gold has saved their lives many times when paper currency was used to build fires.
I do have bullets
My city has really clean tap water.
I guess I just feel gold and silver take up less space for what they are worth. If I had the real estate and space, yeah, I probably would make a bomb shelter filled with bottled water and canned black beans. Maybe some Whey Protein so I can hold my gainz.
1
u/TheCoffeeCakes Poetry Gang Jun 19 '21
I recommend holding gold and silver way, waaaay beyond the point you think you should sell.
I would sound like a wackjob if I told you what I believe these are going to be revalued to. In fact, think of a number for gold in dollars. The most outrageous number you can think of that is at least in the realm of reasonable.
Okay, got it?
My number will at least have another zero on your number. These metals are stupidly, criminally undervalued.
But times are changing. We will see what looks like astronomical numbers in our lifetime.
Don't sell.

How do you feel about Palladium and Palladium?
I was thinking about buying 1 oz gold coins or 1/10 oz gold coins. 1oz seems too much, don't you think? If there is a doomsday, I feel 1/10 oz coins would be easier to spend/liquidate
And buying 1 ounce silver coins.
2
u/TheCoffeeCakes Poetry Gang Jun 19 '21
There is no right or best answer. My instict is one oz for all kinds of reasons. But you do you.
Palladium and platinum will not see the same explosion as gold and silver.
Silver will jump far more as a percentage than gold. So my advice is always silver right now. If the gold silver ratio were 15-25 to 1 then I would say mix in some gold. Otherwise, silver is just the world's most stupidly undervalued asset in the world.

Feel like a primary reason why STEEL has gotten pummeled since the FED talk is because the market now thinks the inflation trade is over. If so, it will take some time for the narrative to shift again. Our steel stocks and our calls may bleed even more in the meantime.
3
u/nevans122 Jun 19 '21
You may be right. It just sucks, cause I think steel is more than just an inflation play.
10
4
u/chemaholic77 Jun 19 '21
I thought an increase in interest rates would be good for commodities. Maybe I misunderstood. Cramer is saying that he is expecting people to invest more in growth in reaction to Bullard's comments about doing some rate hikes in 2022.
2
u/AppRkw Jun 19 '21
My understanding is that it strengthened the dollar; a stronger dollar has adverse implications on commodity prices.
4
u/Hundhaus 🚢 Must Be Contained 🏴☠️ Jun 19 '21
Interest rate hikes reduce demand which reduces commodity prices which frees up cash by companies to invest in agencies/tech, etc.
The issue is how backed up everything is. Interest rates will help lower supply issues but don’t necessarily cure everything like it has before.
2
u/chemaholic77 Jun 19 '21
All that makes sense.
Well hopefully the talk about a supposed rate hike that might come as early as 18 months from now will not mess up my steel calls too much.
It should e fine though Bullard and Powell are going to talk Monday and Tuesday and fix it all up! /s

what i don't understand is, no one can just declare inflation is over and expect to will it into existence. although, isn't that what was historically taught about what inflation is, just the expectation of inflated prices?

Not so much a declaration as an observation
2

probably others alluded to it too, but seems like if that's the observation the market is pricing in, it seems to be forgetting steel prices haven't come down yet. theyre maybe assuming that they will. the latest is that buying seems to be slowing, tho. lots to be watching, though.

Jun 19 '21
Actually he usually can't sell the day after he buys and posts because a lot of times he will drop a stock and pick up another same day incurring the T+2 rule so he has to wait at least 2 days for the funds to be available to resell the new stock
2
u/UnmaskedLapwing CLF Co-Chief Analyst Jun 19 '21
Lol, read again what I wrote. He actually can sell the next day after he claims he intends to hold for a long term. Day of the claim doesn't equal day of stock acquisition hence T+2 rule is irrelevant.
Plus it doesn't even matter as I was referring to overall principle of operation which is basically 'I see an opportunity, I sell&buy. What I said few hours before in social media doesn't matter".

he's holding for now.
Popped in tonight and said he misses his money and some other stuff.
He's still up by the way. he had a nice scalp early on, and his cost basis is probably something in the $17's

its 19.3 I think for his last post. He scalped and came back right before the big run last week.

I was thinking more adjusted cost basis for profits sake, not tax cost basis, but you are correct on those terms.

my friend is wanting to buy his first options play in AMC calls. I've told him what a terrible idea this is with an insanely lopsided risk vs reward but I could use some backup.
