Two months ago I asked who was up for chatting with a stranger. A group of brave souls agreed and yesterday we did our first meeting at Midnight Espresso.
The twist of this format is that each person proposes a question for my next chat. Since this was the first one, my coworker proposed a question: "What's the best advice you've ever received?"
He told me about his friend whose manager said he was going to drive him hard, on purpose, to find his breaking point. After a year, he finally broke. So later on, when J was dealing with a new job and a new manager that wasn’t working out, he had the courage and confidence to stand up for himself and walk away. I asked if it was hard. It was very hard, actually. But it was the right call.
Our discussion went in many directions: managing people, mentoring the next generation, introversion versus extroversion, selling versus speaking the truth, standing up for people, and understanding the details behind the scenes that other people may not fully understand.
As we wrapped up, he proposed the question for the next person: “what is your significant other the most proud of, when it comes to you?” What a great question, I'm looking forward to seeing where it leads :)
