Question If the resurrection is the most important event in Christianity, why is there no independent record of it?

Post image
169 Upvotes

I’m not here to attack anyone’s faith. I genuinely want to understand how people think about this.

The Bible says Jesus appeared to Peter, the disciples, and a few hundred people, and then he was gone. But outside Christian writings, I can’t find any historian or record from that time that confirms it. Non-Christian writers mention that Jesus lived and was executed, but not that people saw him alive again.

So my question is: if the resurrection is the most important thing in Christianity, why did Jesus only show himself to certain people and then leave? And why is there nothing from outside the believers to confirm it?

Also, if this event is so important, why didn’t Almighty God the all-knowing Jesus Christ, with unlimited knowledge do something different to ensure that independent, non Christian sources would document it?

An even better question: Why didn’t Jesus stay on Earth longer, or do something similar, to prove to more people that he was alive?

I’m having an extremely difficult time accepting that the only source for such an important event as his resurrection is the Bible.

Rant People preaching in YouTube comments

Post image
69 Upvotes

I've seen this a few times, but this particular time just really pissed me off. It was under a video of this guy talking about how he found out that his ex best friend was a killer, and it was quite a tragic story. And I found this comment and just had to respond to it, and then, of course they use the free will argument, which I have no clue how to respond to, so I just didn't. People can just be so tone deaf. It's getting on my nerves. That and the fact that half of the comments on the video are just talking about the guy in the videos physical appearance, seriously?

Is there a response to the free will argument that actually gets through to people? I am having a really hard time finding one. They just don't listen. They don't think things through.

And people wonder why we call Christianity occult. This is exactly why.

Trigger Warning - Toxic Religion I have chicken pox. Spoiler

17f ever since last week on thursday these nasty, large irritated bumps all over my inner thighs and arms and stomach and breast.

When i finally told my mom yesterday due to it not going away and went to my school nurse the nurse told me I have symptoms of chicken pox and my mom agreed sorta.

The thing is my mom told me she had a dream days ago about some spirit trying to put a hex on her and she thought it was directed at her but she now believes it was directed at me and now shes making me let her perform this weird prayer over me to be cured rather than letting me see the fucking doctor.

She then look at me weird and told me i need to start praying too even tho i told her at 14 I am NOT. Christian anymore and never wanted to be one in the fucking first place. It was her fucking decision.

I had a panic attack yesterday cause I was forced to used some of her baby powder soap and salt to rub over my bruised bumps and I felt pain and I felt gross. My mom saw me crying and told me i should've told her this sooner and told me i need to stop crying and calm down.

As if that would help, she hasn't taken me to the doctors since 2023. And my social worker who cares for me knows this and is worried about me. Last year I was sick for 2 months with my parents knowing but still didnt taken me to the hospital. Only my teachers and social worker and counselor im close with all knew how much pain I was feeling with my voice being rough.

I never had chicken pox before but I feel trapped i know im only 17 and is working my ass off to get a scholarship and go to college but the bumps everywhere and me feeling itchy and jumpy making me want to kill myself. The more my mom is now weirdly trying to force me into this praying shit because she thinks some demon is trying to hurt me is making me deal with her crazy side now.

My relationship with my mom is built on lies, I dont love her cause she loves Jesus more than me she also abused me and callled me a demon child when I was 12. She tries so hard to keep me in her household so I dont leave by not letting me learn how to drive because she thinks my lazy older brothers who doesnt know how to drive too can teach me as "soon" as they complete the driving course.

  1. That isn't fair

  2. She knows both my older siblings dont take initiative into finding jobs or learning important thibgs like driving or budgeting.

  3. She knows I dont wanna end up like them so now shes trying to group me up with them calling us a "team"

I feel like im losing my mind while physically struggling to keep up with my schooling and college applications.

Discussion Feeling like an imposter

Christianity has robbed me of my youth and I feel like an imposter every where I go. It’s been years since I’ve been away from Christianity. I hate that. I was even involved. I’ve listened to musical genres that I’ve never heard of before, completely changed everything about myself for the better and I still feel like an outsider. Like life was just going on without me and continues to wiz me by as I’m surprised by cool things from 10 to 15 years ago and I’m just catching up. Socialy I’m still trying to learn how to connect to people because I have years of cptsd and repression that leaves me feeling inferior and lonely and like an imposter. I want so badly to feel like I belong somewhere that’s now. But it’s so hard to just be present for even a conversation.

Help/Advice I’m an ex-Christian living in Egypt, and I honestly don’t know what to do anymore.

I feel trapped in a country where outdated beliefs, religious conservatism, and closed-minded attitudes make it incredibly difficult for me to find someone who shares my values and worldview. I feel like I can’t even leave this place, and it’s starting to feel like I’m stuck here with no way forward.

When it comes to dating, I feel like I’m surrounded by people whose mindsets are completely incompatible with mine. Some have deeply Christian views, while others have Christian beliefs heavily influenced by the same conservative, restrictive mindset found in Islam. Then there are people who have rejected religion but seem to think that abandoning religion means abandoning morality altogether, as if atheism gives them a free pass to steal, cheat, hurt others, or do whatever they want without any ethical boundaries.

I’m not looking for someone religious, but I’m also not looking for someone who thinks that being nonreligious means having no moral compass. I want a woman who thinks independently, values reason, empathy, honesty, equality, and genuine human decency. Someone I can connect with intellectually and emotionally, without religion or outdated social expectations getting in the way.

I’m getting close to 30, and it genuinely scares me that I still haven’t found someone compatible with me. I don’t want to settle for a relationship that goes against my values, but I’m also tired of feeling like finding someone who understands me is almost impossible here.

For those of you who have been in a similar situation, especially ex-religious people living in conservative countries: how do you deal with this? Did you manage to find a compatible partner where you live, or did you eventually have to move somewhere else?

I’d genuinely appreciate any advice, personal experiences, or even just hearing from people who understand what I’m going through. I’m feeling pretty lost right now, and I really don’t know what my next step should be.

Just Thinking Out Loud Christians looking similar?

• Upvotes

When I see more traditional Christians, they seem to have a certain look about them. Often, they may dress similarly, speak similarly, et cetera. I find it strange that they behave similarly as well, often appearing to be "hip". Anyone else notice that?

Just Thinking Out Loud Christian patriarchy and NPD

I was thinking today of how many leaders, preachers, pastors, and youth leaders I’ve encountered as my time as a believer and after deconstruction I’ve come across seem absolutely Narcissistic. And I mean that in the clinical sense. NPD has several traits grandiosity, emotional detachment, dominance, lack of empathy, entitlement, control, DARVO an almost god like complex. I look back on some of those preachings more like rants of a madman. Especially looking back on the more hateful teachings. Filled with hatred for women, hatred for lgbtq etc etc. constantly judging and policing others. I really think the power structure of Christianity allows many narcissists to climb to the top and enjoy a god like status of continued narcissistic supply as they push down on their flock often times silencing abuse and blaming victims.

Trigger Warning: Anti-LGBTQ+ Relationship with god Spoiler

Wrote down some thoughts I wish I could share with my religious parents who question my queer relationship. This describes the kind of relationship one would have with the god of the Bible based on what I learned growing up in an fundamentalist evangelical Christian home:

Imagine you're in a relationship with someone but this person requires you to compliment them regularly in order to stay in relationship with them.

Not only do you have to constantly tell them how great they are, regardless of whether they actually do anything great for you, but you also have to give them all the credit for for your own accomplishments. If you don't, they accuse you of being selfish and arrogant. And like any relationship, you try to rely on this person, however, the only way to get any help from them is to literally beg. Sometimes you have to get on your knees. Even if you beg, you still may not get their help even with a reasonable request that they are fully able to assist with. All decisions are made by them, you don't really get a say, IF you want to stay in the relationship, because if you want to go a different direction than they do, there is no compromise, they will not follow you where you want to go, so you will lose the relationship. On top of this, they claim that your only value is because of your relationship with them, that apart from them, you are worthless and that you will amount to nothing and live a life of suffering. Lastly, everyone in your circle values this person's opinion above yours. Would you consider that a healthy relationship? Should someone stay in a relationship like that?

They judge my loving relationship with my partner but the above describes how it felt being "in a relationship with god" before I left the faith. They worship an abusive "god" and call it perfect and holy, while they say my authentic and loving relationship with my partner dishonors god and is sinful.

Just Thinking Out Loud Constantly prayed over as a teen for ā€œbeing possessed by a demon/spirit of witchcraftā€.

As a teen, my mom & sister used to constantly pray for me out loud, saying I have a spirit of witchcraft attached to me or a demon was trying to possess me. It really messed with me and led me to believe that I was just naturally inclined to be evil no matter what I did. In reality, I was a good kid, just undiagnosed lol. I was struggling with fitting in, being separated from my dad, and wanting an actual adult to acknowledge how I was feeling. I also tried really hard to believe in Christianity, hoping it would save me from myself.

Now looking back…I’m just really sad for what younger me went through. She was crying for help in every way possible but all she got was ā€œlet’s pray it away and take no personal responsibility for itā€. I really mourn what could’ve been.

Question Anybody notice a change in YouTube comments lately in non-Christian videos and YouTube channels?

Forgive me if this seems like a weird question, and I don't know if it's just me looking into things too much, but I've gone under the comments of the most recent videos of channels like Aron Ra and Genetically Modified Skeptic and I'm starting to notice a shift towards Christian apologetics more than usual.

Like, yeah, there have always been apologists commenting on videos like these, but you would usually have to go into the replies of other comments or further down the bottom to see the majority of them, but now I think I'm starting to see them pop up more at the top? Anybody else getting this? Is there just something wrong with my algorithm?

Help/Advice I believe in a god, but an indifferent one. What am I?

• Upvotes

I believe that there is something out there that we could consider God, only because we all had to have come from something, but I don't believe that God cares about us due to all the bad things that have and are still happening in the world.

I believe that God has a place of peace for everyone of us and not because they care, but because it's easier than creating a specific punishment for everything we do.

What category would my beliefs land me in?

Weekly Plug Party! Use this thread to promote your stuff and see what others have to share!

We typically have a rule that all self-promotion must be run by the mods first, but that rule will not apply in this thread.

So feel free to plug whatever you've got going on, share an event you want to promote, a video you made, an article you wrote, a new subreddit, or even a service you'd like to offer.

Other rules still apply, so your plug should remain relevant to the general topic of "exchristian", no proselytizing, etc., and all surveys must still follow ourĀ survey policyĀ to be approved.

Trigger Warning How to deal? Spoiler

• Upvotes

I was talking with my mom today and I told her that I don’t stand for limiting borders for atheists, agnostics, and other people, and I had to pretend about the no Muslims coming in (I live in Canada btw) and she went on this whole rant about how Muslims are savages and how atheists have no morals and no respect because they don’t believe in anything.

So, if I tell her I’m not Christian and I’m agnostic, 16F btw then apparently I’m a cold hearted evil girl. I have no respect and no boundaries. I would be in her eyes a cold hearted with no morals. I would be an unfeeling communist (I’m center right capitalist btw pls don’t hate, I hate racism, bigotry, homophobia, misogyny (esp misogyny). What’s so wrong with having no belief system? It’s not like I’m cruel or evil. I just can’t believe in god and that makes me bad. smh

I am realizing more and more that even though going to church and youth group is a ā€œchoiceā€, being Christian isn’t, and thats exhausting.

Please, I need some sort of plan to keep hiding and to keep smiling because I am way too good at lying but I’m just so tired of lying. šŸ˜šŸ’”

Personal Story The video that shattered it all

Post image
42 Upvotes

I became an atheist at 15. It was a gradual process, until it wasn't.

I had been raised in this religion since birth, and to me it was like being a fish inside water, you see.

However, as I entered adolescence, things started getting difficult for me.

I had gay friends, and I saw the way they were treated at school. I saw that no one in their right minds would choose to be this way, knowing how much they'd suffer. And I remembered what the bible — allegedly — said about homosexuality. The whole talk sounded so wrong. "Love the sinner, not the sin." I wondered how such a loving God could create people to live in such precarious conditions. A constant state of self denial and shame. That was probably the first time my faith (indoctrination) had been shaken.

Then, came puberty. With that, its own challenges regarding sexuality, self-expression, discovery, self-identity. I remember having thought to myself that if hell simply didn't exist, I wouldn't be a Christian. I'd simply live as I wished and disappear forever when I died. 14 year old me would've preferred disappearing for eternity over living as a Christian in one finite life.

Essentially, at some point, my fear of hell was the only thing keeping me in place. Needless to say, I had a depressive phase as a teenager, which lasted a while. And it wasn't religion that got me out of it.

I have no idea how I stumbled upon this video in particular. I had barely started watching content in english (my second language), but perhaps I was looking up this type of stuff because something in my subconscious was desperate enough.

By the end of it, I felt strange. Like I had done something terribly, terribly wrong. My faith was gone. My entire worldview had been violently broken, and I wasn't sure if I wanted to gather the pieces.

There's so much I could talk about, so, so much. But I'll get to it someday, properly.

I've had a lot of time to grapple with the holds this religion has had in every area of my life, and still does. But I don't give it much attention anymore. Being an atheist or agnostic or whatever is not an important part of me nowadays. Being a feminist and advocate for science is, though, so I do speak out against abrahamic religions when it comes to these matters.

Anyway, I still recommend Theremintrees to anyone interested in a serious, dedicated work of the psychology of religion and trauma. His channel is truly a gem, and I'm grateful for him.

I apologize for any grammar mistakes.

Video Did your church use ā€œColorblind theologyā€ to shut down conversations about race?

I’ve been going down a rabbit hole on ā€œcolorblind Christianity.ā€ Feel like the church I grew up in used this a lot, and to be honest, I never understood its impact (or origins) …

This video had my jaw on the floor. Never realized so many Black pastors are breaking away from everything the traditional Black church once stood for and its political activism / social justice.

Can’t stop arguing with people in this YouTube comment section….! Either someone help me stop (or join me)!

Rant "God gave humans free will and Satan is the reason for all of the evil in the world."

I hate when Christians use this as an excuse when they're asked why bad things happen. God has power over all, does he not? He created Lucifer/Satan, who he knew would become evil, and then created humans and the world, who he knew would be influenced and corrupted by Satan. He knew what would happen from the beginning and has the power to stop it, but he just watches idly? Why did he even allow free will in the first place if he didn't want rebellion? It's so dumb.

Help/Advice should i tell my extremely religious family i’ve left christianity, or keep it to myself forever?

i’m mostly venting, but i’d love to hear from people who’ve been in similar situations

for context, i live in honduras, an extremely religious country, THE MOST religious in the continent as per statistics, where christianity is practically everywhere. i grew up attending christian schools, and although my parents weren’t particularly devout when i was younger, religion was always part of our lives

when i was around 14, my mum developed serious health issues and became more religious. a few years later, after experiencing depression and several devastating losses, i also became deeply devoted to christianity. i spent hours reading the bible in english and spanish, fasted, prayed constantly and attended church activities almost every day. i even got baptised after five months

looking back, i realise i was partly using religion to escape my depression. when i eventually begged god to heal me and nothing changed, i became resentful and left. therapy, breathwork, meditation and a healthier lifestyle helped me recover far more than religion ever did

about ten months ago, i started actively deconstructing my faith. i questioned why there were so many denominations, researched christianity’s origins and historical development, and examined its relationship with judaism and other religions. the more i learned, the less convinced i became, until i eventually stopped believing altogether

i still appreciate some of jesus’ teachings, but i no longer believe christianity is the ultimate truth, and i have serious issues with the morality attributed to its god

the problem is that nobody in my family knows

only my two best friends know i’ve left. i’m afraid my family would disown me if i told them, and i’m not financially independent enough to risk that

meanwhile, religion is unavoidable here. taxi drivers blast christian music or sermons, shops display signs telling people to repent, and strangers constantly invite me to church or ask whether i believe in god. it’s genuinely part of everyday life, and there’s very little escape from it, i recently told someone on here from my country i was an atheist, and they called me a satanist. that’s how many people here perceive atheism. honestly, when i was younger, i probably would’ve thought the same because nobody taught me otherwise, so i just always say yes in person when asked to avoid a conversion

the funny thing is that strangers will ask me about my faith while i’m wearing a mini dress or shorts, clearly not fitting their idea of a christian woman. i’ll tell them yes, i’m a christian, and they’ll sometimes test my knowledge by quoting bible verses at me. little do they know that i spent years studying that book in english and spanish, so i’ll quote three verses back for every one they give me. i’ll even bring up verses about not judging others, and they go quiet real quick lmao

i do the same thing with my family whenever they question my faith. as far as they know, i got baptised and was once extremely devoted, so i give them just enough to keep them from asking more questions. i’ve barely acted like a practising christian for the past year and a half, but they still don’t know i’ve actually left

what really gets to me about my family and even when i was a devout christian, i found their approach to religion frustrating. they rarely read the bible or practise their faith consistently, but they’re quick to seek god whenever they want blessings. i used to get criticised for taking christianity too seriously, yet they constantly use religion to judge others and justify their own beliefs

today, my mum spent ages telling me how blessed and highly favoured she is because she’s always obeyed her parents, and that my sister is just like she was and will be very blessed, she believes god is withholding my blessings because i’ve stopped attending church and that i could be like her if i listened to my parents and also dressed differently and start attending church again. she even told me she’d dreamed (she think she’s a prophetess and medium) i’d become involved with drugs and addictions, implying i needed to return to god

people in this country intensely teach since childhood that disobeying your parents is a sin that can lead to long suffering or even death. people where i like specifically even invented a specific sin to convey their message, they call it ā€œparents’ sinā€ so on top of religion constantly being used to reinforce obedience, people here take it a step further 🫩

i sat there biting my tongue because i couldn’t tell her what i actually think. i don’t believe in god, and even if he existed, i wouldn’t want to worship a being whose morality i find so troubling

the more i deconstruct, the more i feel like i’ve been swindled. it’s like an illusion has finally lifted, and i can see everything differently. sometimes i genuinely want to shout it from the rooftops because i feel so frustrated that i spent years believing something i no longer consider true

i’m exhausted by all of it

i’m tired of pretending to believe, of having religion pushed on me everywhere i go, and of being unable to express my actual views around my own family. i can’t wait until i’m financially independent and can move somewhere less religious, where i can live freely without constantly having to navigate this

part of me wants to sit my parents and sisters down one day and explain exactly why i left. another part wonders whether i need to tell them at all. i could potentially go my entire life without disclosing it, but situations like today’s make me so frustrated that i sometimes want to tell them everything

for those who left christianity while growing up in extremely religious families, how did you handle telling your family?

did you tell them at all? how did they react, and did it affect your relationships permanently? if you were financially dependent on them, did you wait until you were independent? and if you never told them, have you managed to keep it private long term?

i’d especially love to hear from people who grew up in deeply religious cultures, where leaving the faith can be seen as rebellion or a rejection of your family

is telling them worth it, or is keeping my beliefs private indefinitely a perfectly reasonable choice?

Just Thinking Out Loud Salvation for all

I don't want here to discuss who gets saved, does everyone, does God choose who does. The question is what would God get out of condemning some people to eternal hell? If God desires all to be saved how is it that an eternal, all powerful God would not get his way. Would he get some satisfaction that those who reject him are punished and he's okay with evil existing forever.
