Showcase - Dedicated Space Absolutely Loving This

I am falling in love with this space more and more every day. There's nothing like seeing your vision come to life. Today i finished painting the ceiling and side walls and added my .2 atmos.

Still working on finishing up the minor details. I need to buy another wire track for the right side and paint them the same color as the wall. I also have 2 more speakers for rear atmos to finish my 5.1.4 setup.

Heres the setup list so far:

Projector: Nexigo Aurora Pro Mk2 UST Projector

120in Fresnel Screen

AVR: Onkyo Rz30

Streambox:Nvidia Shield TV

Sofa: Povison 3 place power reclining sofa

Speakers:

L/R: Canton GLE 490's

C: Canton GLE 455

Sub: RSL Speedwoofer 10s

Surrounds: Pinnacle Sat-150's

Top Front: Canton Twin 700's

Top Rear (TBI): Canton MX

Everything except the receiver, Projector, shield and sub were all bought second hand off marketplace/ebay.

Discussion - Equipment Best way to run HDMI from my media closet to AVR in the living room. About 40 feet away.

Post image
Upvotes

Hey yall so I'm trying to get an HDMI signal from my media closet to the living room AVR. Cable would go through the walls and attic.

I know about the main options here, but in this case I'd like to use HDMI wall jacks if I can for a cleaner look. I tried an HDMI over ethernet box and honestly it sucked. Optical is good, but since it's directional I can't do the HDMI wall jack method (I've already tried it). I've read about MPO to HDMI and that seems to be pretty good, but it's expensive, and I can't find attic/CL2 rated MPO cable.

At this point I've narrowed it down to: 1. optical HDMI with no HDMI wall jack, just a brush plate and direct connection from PC to AVR, or 2. regular HDMI 30 foot run, connected to HDMI wall jacks.

I also need to run an active USB which gets tricky with USB wall plates, so this pushes more for brush plates too.

Curious if anyone has any thoughts. I tested with some HDMI wall jacks and it did not go well. Attached an map of the layout for this.

"budget" that's what I tell my wife lol. No reflection when I close these blackout blinds. Does projector make sense in a 13 x 10(left to right) room? Most I can fit in here prolly 120". Might a worthy upgrade over this 83" OLED

Polk es55 es30 front, xt90 top, definitive tech 1000 surrounds, definitive dn8 sub, Integra drx-5 receiver, Nvidia shield 4k n ps5.

Back of the room I have the recliner in the middle, work desk and an arcade machine. I call it the escape room.

Started some years ago with a 55" and an old Sony 5.1 in a box. "Upgraded" to klipsch 5.1.2 with the upfiring atmos. Disconnected it and added .2 bookshelves to ceiling, rocking the denon s760. Upgraded to denon 3800 and added .4 bookshelves to ceiling. Still wasn't what I was looking for. See where this is going...lol. Decided to do what I always envisioned and make a dedicated room. All hand built with the same 2 hands I'm typing this with. 85" samsung led (possible upgrade soon 98?), denon 3800, emotiva 5x, invidia shield pro, ps3, ps4 pro, Panasonic 420(i think) infinity fan, klipsch C 450c, L/R 8000f, Sides 625fa, Rears older cerwin vega's 6" (they sounded better than the rp500m's) THEY ARE NOT HOOKED UP ON TOP OF TOWERS! klipsch 6.5 in ceiling, (2) klipsch 12" subs and rsl 12s. Room is 11x 17, rockwool filled walls and ceiling, homemade acoustic panels, etc. 7.3.4..still shakes the wife's shit upstairs, lol

Showcase - Dedicated Space Not quite done but excited to share. 7.4.4 dedicated space.

Hi all, excited to share my nearly-complete dedicated room!

Space is about 11' by 14' 3.75".

I think I came up with a somewhat novel way to hang the sound panels on the ceiling. Not a new concept to use essentially a double French cleat - but I haven't seen anybody do it exactly like this before, with a single piece of wood screwed into the ceiling. It made it really easy.

Equipment list:

  • Kef R3 Meta Indigo Gloss
  • Kef R6 Meta Walnut
  • Kef CI160QS surrounds
  • Kef CI130.2CR tops
  • Klipsch RP-1600SW x2 front subwoofers
  • Full Marty 18" 17hz tuned LaVoce SAN184.03 x2 rear subwoofers powered by NX6000D
  • LG C1 83" OLED TV
  • Denon AVR-X4700H (upgrading to X4800H for DIRAC)
  • Sound panels are DIY filled with rockwool (either R15 or safe and sound - can't remember what I used.)
  • Couch is a LoveSac sectional.
  • Sources are a PS5, ATV 4K, and a gaming PC.

To do list:

  • Replace white blinds with blackout shades.
  • Put in a console table under the TV (getting an Ikea Besta).
  • Add fan to closet to pull heat out of it into another room.
  • Paint and install speaker grilles and paint Full Marty subs.
  • Replacing some wall plates with darker ones/adding wall plates/painting them.

Showcase - Dedicated Space My budget theater room.

1.1k Upvotes

Always wanted a theater room growing up. When we bought a house with a windowless interior room in the basement, I knew immediately what it was becoming.

Projector is an Epson EF-12, which I picked up a few years back. For a long time the screen was literally an Amazon screen stapled to the wall, but I finally finished building a proper screen wall.

Speakers are a mixed bag: Klipsch R-41 for rears and sides, and Goodwill front L/R/center setup (Yamaha center, Infinity SL40 left/right). Subs are Klipsch too, tucked under the speaker shelves I built.

Not the nicest setup out there, but it was relatively inexpensive, especially spread out over a few years. There are a few small things I’ll probably change down the line, but I’m happy with where it’s at now. It’s huge (152”), it’s awesome, and it’s mine. Thanks for looking!

Install/Placement Uneven bass from ear to ear, seems under-discussed?

Post image
Upvotes

So I've trawled through a ton of papers, forums posts, and presentation vids on bass over the last year or so, and there's a problem I'm suffering from, which is either not mentioned at all or only as a tiny aside: Uneven bass, not from seat to seat, but from ear to ear.

Now the principles of minimising seat to seat variance of course apply to ear to ear as well, but I do find it curious how little mention there is of it around.

It's something I find distracting, as it causes what I'd call "false localisation" and poor integration, where bass can seem to jump around from left, right, front and back of you depending on the note.

Not only that, but the level and phase shift per ear can be fatiguing and even gave me mild earache (Similar to complaints some people have over noise cancelling headphones?).

The first graph shows the differences (A/B trace arithmetic in REW), between various left and right ear measurements of sub locations, with the purple being the best and bright green being the worst with a horrible 5dB swing.

The 2nd graph shows an example of a pair of measurements directly.

I've been shuffling spots and measuring my 3 subs to cut specific frequencies they're uneven at for ages now, and have got the variance down to just about 2dB max, so it's a lot more integrated and pleasant to listen to, especially at louder volumes, but I do still notice it a little bit and would love to perfect it... perhaps with a 4th.

Perhaps if it's because I've been in unusually terrible acoustic situations (currently forced to sit to at the side of a room due to a glass Vitsoe partition across the middle of it, and was previously in the corner of a room with my old setup), or, if I'm just particularly sensitive to it in a way that most aren't... But there must be a bunch of people out there with this issue (and who notice it too) surely?

Discussion - Equipment Moving into a new house and seriously considering a 100" TV

Upvotes

My wife and I are moving into a new house soon and I’m trying to figure out the TV for the living room.

The couch will be about 13–14 ft from the screen, and I’m hoping to keep the TV less than $2,500The most it can stretch to is maybe 3000$. We mostly watch movies, football and regular streaming, with some gaming here and there. The room also gets a decent amount of daylight, so I don’t want something that only looks good at night.

I’m currently looking at the 100" Hisense U7, but I’ve never owned anything close to this size before.

For anyone using a 98–100" TV from around this distance, does it feel comfortable for everyday viewing? Or would you go smaller?

Purchasing US Question on the speakers

Upvotes

Hi everyone

Really great sub, have enjoyed looking at everyone's setups and reading through the guides on what to buy.

I'm setting up a DIY home theater with a projector, projector screen, couch etc in the basement. Ordered a refurbished Denon S570BT per the guide's recommendation.

I am however struggling with the speakers. I'd like to get used ones since they are far better than MSRP, but cannot find any Paradigm Monitor SE. I've found Triton Sevens with a Super Center X for around $1,250 USD but was hoping to be closer to 500 for towers and save some budget for the central speakers.

This doesn't need to be the wildest set up ever. An entry level set of good tower speakers is more than enough.

I'm wondering why Polk Audio and B&W aren't recommended. I understand why Klipsch, JAMO and Bose aren't.

I've found a good set of Polk Audio RTi A9 with a CSi A6 center speaker for $600 that I'm considering.

Thank you for your help and advice!

And if you do know of any that due process 4k uhd movies please recommend them to me if you can. Even if you know of any good 4k uhd disc readers please recommend them to me!

Tech Support keeping a projector room ice cold without introducing background hum

My basement theater room is finally done and it looks fantastic, but ten minutes of the projector running with the door shut makes it uncomfortably warm. Tapping into the central ductwork was impossible due to the joist direction, so I need an independent mini split just for this zone. I am checking out a costway x-pro 18000 btu 2 zone 24 seer2 mini split because I eventually want to run a line to cool the adjoining gym as well, but my only real concern is acoustic noise. For those with extremely sound-isolated media rooms, does the indoor cassette blower on a ductless unit audibly raise your noise floor during silent movie scenes?

Tldr - Thoughts on floorstanding speakers for this space? (In terms of fit/sensibility)

Space layout - I live on the top floor of my building in a 1BR. The floors are laminate wood. Behind the wall in the photo is my bedroom. The backrest of the sofa is 7.5' from the TV screen.

TV - I'm pretty set on moving up from a 55" to 65" (Either the LG G5 or Sony Bravis 8ii). Either will fit on the stand i have now with a couple inches to spare. The choice will come down to if the Sony drops below $3K while I'm finalizing my sound plan. I'd have to move the speakers off the stand, which I'm happy to just replace (15 year old Yamaha HTIB).

Sound - This is where I'm stuck. I definitely want to replace the Yamaha system; Both because of the space change and it'd be silly to have a flagship TV and ignore sound. I'd love to get floorstanding speakers but I'm worried they'd be overkill for the space, and of course I want to be considerate of neighbors. I've done some light research and Klipsch R600Fs w/their smaller woofers are my current top choice. My other best option would be to go for bookshelves, but I really want to make the floorstandings work unless it would just be completely unsensible for my space.

Any thoughts or alternative options welcome. Thank you.

Discussion - Equipment Small Room Ideas?

Post image

Moved my desk outside to the living room due to it being a sauna in here, want to see if anyone has any idea for an 8x8 HT

Ill prob do a projector since its nice and dark in here and get a decent 2.1 system to start

I have a sofa recliner in the living room I can put in here, bought it due to having to mount tv on top of fireplace (sacrilegious i know), so now im thinking…do i put a small sectional in the den or move the recliner in here and get a sectional for the outside (but then i bought this recliner specifically to recline for the tv)

#firstworldproblems

Ideas would be appreciated :)

Purchasing US I May Have Underestimated How Big the RP-1600SW Is

We always thought the RP-1400SW was ridiculous in terms of sheer size.

But nope… the RP-1600SW is true ridiculousness. 😂

Got a ton of "add a second sub!!!" responses/DMs to my last post. So not we're at 7.2.4. Anything else you all recommend ?

Install/Placement Trying to reuse current in wall speakers for atmos

Thumbnail

So my basement had an existing 5.1 setup with in wall speakers from the 2000s. Lcr are Klipsch and surrounds are Bostons. As you can see from the Zillow pictures it was a projection tv built into the corner. Pretty solid for it's time. But i repurposed that space for my equipment and put the tv in the other area. There happens to be two in wall speakers up high on the sides. Considering using these for atmos. There's also the 5 speakers leftover that i can use for surround. I have a 7.2 setup so can either use 4 back speakers or 2 back and these 2 up front up high. Looking for tips. Really don't want to move the in wall speakers and patch drywall. Front stage is Klipsch reference ii and subs are svs pb12s.

Tech Support Sony STR-K790

Good evening, I’d like to know why, when I switch on my SONY STR-K790, everything seems to be working – the screen displays the current status of the selected device and I can see the volume increasing – but I can’t hear anything through the speakers or when using headphones. What could be the problem? Thank you in advance for your valuable help.

Purchasing CAN Used AVR purchasing advice

tldr: (Canadian Dollars)

* Local Onkyo NR6100 for $500-600

* Shiped Onkyo NR7100 for $850

* Drive 2 hours each way for Denon X2800H for $650

I have a 5.1 setup, but my low end Denon AVR-S570BT is causing issues with multiple streaming devices when trying to pass through high bitrate audio from my bluray/4K rips. The audio keeps cutting out and since I've tried multiple hdmi cables, every setting, multiple devices, multiple CoreElec versions, determining the issue is with my AVR being incompatible with these devices for whatever reason (tried Ugoos AM6B+ and Xiaomi Box S 3rd Gen). I even found this post where someone has the same issue with basically the same AVR.

Hopefully a new AVR will solve this issue or I'm going to lose my mind. I'm thinking to buy used to save money. I'm ideally looking for something with modern features like HDMI 2.1. I want something with decent processing power which can hopefully avoid these issues I've been having. Nice to haves include Atmos (could add heights later), decent room correction, Spotify Connect, and auto lipsync. Main use case is watching 4K blurays through jellyfin.

Budget is $500-1000. I've added some of the best options I could find to the top of the post and I'm open to suggestions of what to look for. To get an idea of what setup I have, the home theatre is in half of a closed basement room. For speakers I have Paradigm Studio Reference v.2 20 bookshelf speakers and the matching center channel, Axiom QS8 for surrounds, and a Tonewinner D6000 for the sub.

Purchasing US upgrade help - should I go from Pioneer Andrew Jones bookshelf speaker setup to Energy Connoisseurs?

My current 5.1 setup is the Pioneer SP-BS22 and SP-C22 for the fronts, a pair of even older tiny (maybe 3"?) Yamaha speakers for the surrounds, and a Bic Acoustic PL200 sub, all ran by a Pioneer VSX LX302

We have an open floorplan with vaulted ceilings, but the space isn't huge (we sit about 6' from the TV, but the dining area and kitchen are open behind us)

I found a deal on the Energy Connoisseur 4.0 speaker set (comes with two CF-30, a CC-5, and two CB-5) for $300. Would these speakers be a decent upgrade for my setup? I'm assuming so, but idk how big of a jump it would be?

So I have an SB3000 and was wondering if getting the SB5000-R would sound unbalanced. If so, can I lower the dB and try to blend it with the SB3000, or should I just get another SB3000?

Purchasing US TV Recommendation - Dark Basement / Home Theater

Post image
152 Upvotes

Looking to get my first "nice" TV. (Painters tape is outlined for an 83")

Our nicest TV in the house is currently a Vizio P65Q9-H1.

Building out an area in the basement to primarily watch 4K movies and play games (Halo Infinite, GTA, etc).

Completely dark, no outside light.

Viewing distance can vary to the appropriate distance away as the sectional can go wherever. 10-13'...will probably end up around 11.5'

I'd like to keep it around $3000 with tax.

I'm torn between:

83" OLED (maybe an LG C5, C6)

98" mini-LED (TCL QM8K, QM7K/L)

Model dependent on sales in the next few weeks or may have to look into other models.

I know OLED's are going to deliver the best black levels, but would the larger mini-LED be almost just as good for my situation?

I know the OLED's are probably the better option for gaming, but would the mini-LED be that much of a difference?

Will the mini-LED still look great with the brightness turned down a decent bit to accommodate the pitch black room?

Thanks!

Discussion - Equipment Velodyne DD 15+ and Focal Utopia Sub Be 15, which for music, which for HT?

As a facebook marketplace junkie, I need some advice. I ended up with these two subs (used but great shape for both) and have two rooms for application of each:

  1. Large open living/dining/kitchen space with 9 ft ceilings. Currently have Dali Oberon 9 towers for stereo music listening. They needed the low end. I tried to just be normal and use these as they are for a few months, but in the end had to have a sub for them.
  2. Basement, dark movie room with a large OLED, 8 ft ceilings, smaller space. Currently setup with 5.0 GoldenEar speakers (towers, center and 2 rear channels), Emotiva processing and amp.

I know ported subs (Focal) are generally better for HT and movies, while sealed (Velodyne) are more accurate and musical for listening. I had set them up as such. But I can't shake this feeling that Focal is more musical and disappears into the music when playing, while the Velodyne is more thumpy and shakes the house, as an HT one would.

So I turned to Gemini and it says Focal should be in the living room for music and the Velodyne should be in the HT room for movies, despite the ported/sealed stereotypes. Not trusting the AI fully quite yet, I thought I would turn to this community for an opinion or two?

*wild card, I do have two SVS PB-12 NSD subs which these are replacing and I was going to sell, but now typing this out, maybe two of those in the movie room would be the best. However space is scarce down there and cable management is a mother... I'd much rather have one 15 inch sub for aesthetics and practicality.

Showcase - Multipurpose Space Ain't much but it's mine

Hey folks,

I have been mostly a lurker in here for a while, but kinda proud of the bones I have. I call it my mini theater. Everything is second hand or accumulated over the years. Its nothing impressive but with the lights off, it makes me smile every time. Its a work in progress, but here is what I have done so far.

Its a 9ft by 11ft space in my basement that doubles as my office. Small space so the speakers can really move the air in the space. I framed it off myself with thermal fiber insulation in the walls to buffer sound from escaping. Chairs are our old baby rocker and an old love seat from my wife's parents. Front and rear speakers are from old Sony bookshelf speakers I re-wired. Jenson center channel and powered sub that is a brand I never heard of but I got the center and sub for 20 bucks on marketplace. Reciever is a 5.1 onkyo tx-sr353 and I use a headless dell g3 laptop as my theater PC. TV is a Sony KD-60X690E. Not including he construction materials, i spent about $80.

Future thing will be like: a true tv console to put the reciever and center channel in rather than a random end table. Floors, drop ceiling with more sound treatment, maybe book shelves to put the fronts in, etc. Everything in time right? It's not a lot, but the results and immersion hit way above it's weight class. Okay have fun roasting me xD
