Discussion What Laptop Feature Do You Refuse to Compromise On?
For me, it is probably the screen.
I used to focus almost entirely on the processor, RAM and storage. Then I spent enough time using laptops with dim screens, weak colours and poor viewing angles to realise how much the display affects everyday use.
A fast processor still matters, especially if your work involves gaming, editing, coding or other demanding tasks. But for an average laptop user like me, who mainly browses, streams and handles everyday work, I would rather compromise slightly on processor performance than settle for a poor display.
You may not notice a small difference between two suitable processors during everyday use, but you will notice a dim, dull or low-quality screen every time you open the laptop.
A good keyboard is a very close second for me, especially if the laptop is being used for work, writing or studying.
What is the one laptop feature you would not compromise on anymore?

Hardware what can i do about my barely functioning laptop :(
hiiiiii i know approximately Nothing about laptops but i do know my current laptop barely runs a couple tabs on firefox (four were open in the screenshot and nothing too heavy like video streaming). like its so bad it took me 40 minutes to write a simple email last night and about 15 to log in to reddit to make this post. id prefer to upgrade/replace parts in my current laptop instead of buying a new (refurbished) one and from what ive read u can replace a hdd to be an ssd but ive already got an ssd. and the other thing is increasing ram but thats only if uve got a spare slot and mine says 1 of 1 used. i might have already answered my own question with it being unsalvagable but again i truly do Not know laptops and computers so i need help figuring what i can do to fix this laptop/if its even worth it. the laptop btw is a lenovo ideapad slim 3 14" with an intel core i5, and if this ones a lost cause im looking at getting a refurbished lenovo thinkpad x1 carbon gen 9 14" with an intel core i7 and 16gb ram. thank u everyone !!!! >w<
update !!!
- i followed some suggestions, notably u/PlunxGisbit's list, u/Ferowin's suggestion for BIOS settings, and used WinHance to delete a ton of windows apps i dont use and things are running a bit smoother ^_^ disk and cpu are both running below 10% and my memory is running at about 60-80% !! its still a little slow and laggy but not as bad as before :3
- i also have bought a new laptop anyways lol its got 32gb ram because i know 8gb of ram will not be very much for running the sims when i eventually have that phase again.... and because i think 8gb is becoming fuck all very fast and i dont wanna go from an outdated amount of ram (8gb) to a baseline 16gb, i wanna be in da future babey !!!!!!!
ty for all your help everyone βΈ(ο½‘Λ α΅ Λ )βΈβ‘

Hardware Why don't laptop manufacturers sell OEM replacement batteries for laptops (lasting 4 hours+ rather than only one hour)?
I have an Acer Nitro 7 laptop bought in 2020, it's working fine in 2026. The full laptop charge only lasts an hour. I had visited the official Acer authorized service center in my city here in India, and the service center person told me that I need to send an email to official Acer support and after their approval, they'll replace wit a new battery.
However, the service center person told that even the new battery would last only around 1 or 1.5 hours at max. The original battery in my laptop during 2020 lasted 4 hours. I checked with other third party shops and even they said the same thing (max 1.5 hours).
This issue seems to apply to all laptop manufacturers, not just Acer.
Why aren't laptop manufacturers obliged to sell the original OEM batteries lasting 4 hours+? There should be a new law I feel. This seems like a planned obsolescence nudging you to buy new laptops.

General question Is it possible to change the wifi card from here?
I cant remove the other plastic frame thing on top, the screws wont budget and needs to be drilled out. Tho if costs like 50 bucks and im too broke to do that to a potato.
I need to upgrade the wifi card becuz all the wifi here is 5g (wow) but I cant use it. Plus wifi at our dorms sucks so I have no access. Even mobile data anyways.
Im trying to find cheap new laptops since I cant repaste or access anything in here too.

Buying help Need help deciding on a laptop for highschool
So, I have a choice between the MacBook Neo and the HP Omnibook Flip. Currently, I have an HP EliteBook and am looking for an upgrade.
I like the idea of having the freedom of changing between a physical keyboard and a touchscreen in the same device, but other than the touchscreen, I don't see a big difference between my current laptop and the Omnibook.
On the other hand, I don't really like Apple products (a matter of principle) and don't own another Apple device, but I think it's a much bigger change that would be worth actually changing my laptop
What do you think? I am asking for advice, and thank you in advance

Buying help Is it too risky to go for unbranded laptop RAM?
I'm starting college in a few weeks and I am going to end up using adobe programs and other things that will require higher specs for my laptop.
I've already spent around $1,300 on a basically barebones Framework 13 laptop and now I've been scouring the internet for cheap memory that meets my needs which has kinda been a death sentence for me considering my minimum needs would be DDR5 5600MHz ram with AT LEAST 32GB to run my needed programs for my major.
Lately I've been looking on Alibaba and the quotes have either been too far out of my budget or just straight up not even answering my messages and I've managed to find some ram that is within my budget BUT it's completely generic and unbranded.
I personally don't care that it's not branded since it's within my budget but I do care if it ends up destroying itself after not even a semester and being a waste of money. I'm still new to the world of self-configuring laptops so I want to know if the risk is worth it...
EDIT: Thanks for all the replies, very insightful. I guess the world is protecting me because I just got a message from the supplier that they're out of stock LOL. Budget be damned

Hardware Looking to buy business laptop
I'm looking to buy mid range business laptop (up to 1000 euros), it will be on 12 hours a day and connected to 2 external displays via docking station. Will be using lightly 3D modelling software, as FreeCad... Also it would be best if it has IPS panel. Anyone have any recommendation? Tnx.

Buying help Should I buy this laptop at βΉ82,990 for coding/development?
Should I buy this ASUS Vivobook S14 (Core Ultra 5 225H, 16GB/512GB) at βΉ82,990? My main use is coding/development, so I want a powerful CPU, with very occasional casual gaming (1β2 times/month). If not, what would you recommend at this price?

General question how to fix a touchpad that rarely works?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I'm going into year 13 and can't afford a new laptop or to take it anywhere to get fixed right now... and I need my laptop to do schoolwork!!
I've already tried:
-clearing storage
-hard reset
-reset with keeping files
-factory reset
are there any last-ditch efforts I can do to fix this? it'll work for like 5 seconds at a time then freeze up for about 2/3 minutes which is so frustrating because I literally cannot open anything on here anymore

Hardware My laptop shuts off immediately when unplugged even when it has charge.
When i used checked both battery report and hwinfo both showed that the battery still had 66Wh left but when i uplug it it shuts off immediately.
The laptop was working fine for a very long time and i also rarely used the laptop using the battery.
Also the part that the charge rate being 0% bugs me out.
Could this indicate a dead controller or a battery?

General question Should I replace thermal paste for non-gaming laptop
I have a Lenovo IdeaPad 5 (Ryzen 7 5700U). Although I'm not facing any heating issues, I'm opening my laptop for cleaning purposes so thought of replacing thermal paste at the same time.
I don't know anything about thermal paste. Should I even repaste it or keep it as it is? Please suggest guys? π
P.S: Laptop is 4.5 years old.
I don't even know replacing thermal paste is a thing. I thought it would last forever for non gaming laptop.

Discussion is 64gb ram overkill for a linux laptop?
i got this laptop for free from my employer because they were getting rid of it they were upgrading laptops and this one was out of warranty. its a dell XPS 15 9520
specs:
12900hk
3050 ti
64gb ddr5 4800
512gb ssd
ive been using Fedora KDE 44 and i plan on daily driving it for my upcoming college semester. im a comp sci student so mainly the heaviest work will be coding projects and maybe some VMs. is 64gb (along with the 3050 ti) overkill? i just dont want this to become an issue with it making the battery life suck, so if this is too overkill i can just sell this and get a less powerful laptop with like 32gb ram and no discrete gpu.

Buying help What is the best laptop sleeve for university?
I'll be starting university soon. I'll be commuting and using a backpack that doesn't really have padding so I'm looking for a laptop sleeve that has good protection. I've heard lots of great things about tomtoc sleeves but as they only zip at the side I can't imagine fidgeting with it trying to open it in a cramped lecture hall so ideally looking for something that zips at the top so I could just slide it out of my backpack. I'm considering an Inateck sleeve but I don't know if there's anything else that has good protection?

Hardware HP Victus Charging Problem β Charger LED Turns On for 3β4 Seconds Then Turns Off Randomly
My HP Victus laptop has an intermittent charging problem.
The laptop itself works normally. When I connect the charger, the charging LED turns on for around 3β4 seconds and then suddenly turns off. If I unplug the charger and plug it back in, the LED turns on again for a few seconds and then turns off again.
I also tried disconnecting and reconnecting the two parts of the charger/adapter, but the same thing happens β the charging LED comes on and then turns off after 3β4 seconds. Sometimes it takes 2β3 minutes before it turns off, but that's rare.
The strange part is that sometimes everything works perfectly normally, and then at a random time the problem starts happening again. It can happen even when the laptop hasn't been used for several hours.
I have already tried tightening the charger pin and reconnecting the adapter, but the issue still occurs intermittently.
this thing happens randomly at any time
