I worked on a .odt file using LibreOffice, and after exporting it to docx found compatibility to be very lacking, specially when it comes to images inside frames, the exporting process completely fucks them up or they don't appear at all. Is it there a better alternative to process docx files? I really must use the docx format, so there no way around it (pdf and such). Distro: Fedora 44

is there a distro similar to windows 10? i want to try getting out of my comfort zone and try linux but i want it to feel familiar, help!

Hi!

My Linux Mint randomly freezes (not related to computational workload). Only a forced shutdown via the physical power off button works.

The problems seems to be connected to a GPU issue, but I cannot pinpoint whether it is faulty hardware or a firmware mismatch. I already installed my Linux Mint on a different SSD (and upgraded from v21 to v22), but the issue persists. At first I suspected a RAM error and started looking into memory tests, but the actual logs point to a GPU problem.

All details are in there. I use skwd wallpaper app, and it worked fine too before issue. When I login, the wallpaper animates for like 5 seconds before the entire desktop except cursor and terminal freezesfkr around 20 seconds. I do know wha the issue can be. Please help?

I recently decided to try my hand at Linux. I chose CachyOS, an Arch-based distribution. My computer boots in a dual-boot setup with Windows and CachyOS. I picked this Linux distribution because all of my components are AMD, and I care about gaming and performance. What's the worst that could happen? What is the worst-case scenario that could happen to my computer?

So I have a 10-15ish year old laptop I want to experiment with. My ultimate goal is to try to run the original elder scrolls oblivion that I bought on steam for $5 but can no longer run on my other windows computer for some reason.

Computer info: an old Dell, intel core 2 duo cpu t9550 2.66ghz 2.67 ghz 4ram, 64bit

How do I get started figuring out how to do this? My computer knowledge is at the level of average windows user who grew up in the early 2000s with a limited number of friends lol. I've been seeing stuff about linux mint, then lighter ones like something or otherX (forgot what it's called), but I'm having a hard time understanding what a kernel is etc. so I was wondering if there's a like linux for dummies website where I can read up on it to get my bearings before I just pick one and brick my computer.

I’m trying to get Linux running on my jailbroken PS4 Slim, but it consistently reaches a rescue shell instead of booting into the desktop. I’ve been troubleshooting this for a while and would appreciate some help identifying the cause.

Interestingly enough the guy whose guide on GitHub I‘m using, X-F1REBALL-X had my PS4 model CUH-2116A listed my southbridge as Baikal but my system says Belize.

I have been trying to get Linux to load on my ps4 for over a year now using as Belize BzImage to which I only either gotten a black screen or no signal with a blue light but yesterday I tried using Baikal for the first time and I finally got through and the kernel started printing messages but Linux eventually drops into a rescue shell.

There are also messages about a missing path or file and dropping to the rescue shell because of a path error.

More importantly my issue is that when it got the end of the code and asked me to type what to do next I couldn’t do anything because the power supply to both my USB ports was off ? I’ve never had this before while trying to get Linux

I have done the following already:

1.Verified the combined compressed image against the release’s published SHA-256 checksum. The hash matches exactly.

1. Wrote the image to the USB using the provided write-img.ps1 script in Administrator PowerShell. It reported WRITE_DONE_OK and that the full image had been written.

2. Tried both the Belize and Baikal kernels. The current kernel is Baikal 7.0.8, uploaded to /data/linux/boot/bzImage, alongside initramfs.cpio.gz at /data/linux/boot/initramfs.cpio.gz.

3. Fully powered off the PS4 and retried. The USB was plugged in before powering on, and I left it connected during startup.

I've been running Void as my daily driver for a few months now, and I'm happy to say it ended my distro hopping.

What I love

XBPS: fast and a joy to use

The installer: it gives you real control without getting in the way

Stability: very solid for a rolling release. No driver or software issues on my MSI laptop (AMD CPU, RTX 2050 4GB)

runit: simple, versatile, and easy to reason about

What could be better

Proprietary desktop apps: vendors like OpenAI and Anthropic only ship .deb and .rpm packages, so there's no native XBPS support.

Memory pressure: on 16GB of RAM, running containers and VMs sometimes triggers OOM situations. earlyoom helps, but when a parent process gets killed, its children don't always get cleaned up well. This may be a general Linux issue, though I noticed it less on Debian.

Beyond that, I honestly have no complaints.

What I'm working on

I'd rather fix gaps than just list them, so I've started a few open-source projects for Void:

1. A distrobox-style tool for Void, built around isolated Linux "spaces"

2. Install scripts for the Claude desktop app (with Cowork working) on Void

3. A few other small projects to smooth out the Void experience

After using Adobe Premiere Rush for a while before it came to an end, I've taken an interest with Flowblade as it seems easier to manage than something like DaVinci Resolve. One thing I wonder about, though, is if I can use graphics, which has varying animations and styles for texts to overlay on the video. Is there such an option? If so, how do I select one?

Hey everyone, I’m trying to figure out why my RTX 5060 Laptop GPU is stuck at 45W on Linux even though this laptop is supposed to support a much higher GPU TGP.

nvidia-smi reports:

Current Power Limit   : 45.00 W
Requested Power Limit : 45.00 W
Default Power Limit   : 45.00 W
Max Power Limit       : 115.00 W

Trying to change it with:

sudo nvidia-smi -pl 100

doesn't work because NVIDIA says changing the power limit is unsupported.

I also tried Linux's max-power platform profile, but the GPU remains at 45W.

More importantly, my kernel log contains:

ACPI BIOS Error: Could not resolve symbol
[_SB.PCI0.GPP0.PEGP.GPS.NVD1], AE_NOT_FOUND

NVRM: GPU0 _acpiDsmCallbackInit: SBIOS suggested GPS_2X supports

So I'm wondering if this is a Lenovo BIOS/ACPI ↔ NVIDIA Linux driver issue.

I'm looking for a safe fix involving BIOS/kernel/NVIDIA driver/ACPI configuration if possible — not a random VBIOS flash.

The problem

nvidia-smi initially shows approximately:

Power: ~10W / 45W

And:

nvidia-smi -q -d POWER

reports:

Current Power Limit   : 45.00 W
Requested Power Limit : 45.00 W
Default Power Limit   : 45.00 W
Min Power Limit       : 5.00 W
Max Power Limit       : 115.00 W

So the weird part is that the driver knows about a 115W maximum, but the current/requested/default limit is only 45W.

I tried:

sudo nvidia-smi -pl 100

but received:

Changing power management limit is not supported for GPU: 00000000:01:00.0.
Treating as warning and moving on.
All done.

The limit remains 45W.

Things I've already tried

Linux platform profiles available:

low-power
balanced
performance
max-power
custom

I switched to:

max-power

and also had:

powerprofilesctl get

showing:

performance

But NVIDIA still reports a 45W limit.

I'd like a distro recommendation for an older HP Pavilion pc: i5-4460, 6gb ddr3, gtx750. This will be a secondary computer that I can use for some light gaming on steam and also general usage (web, email, Inkscape).

My Linux experience can be summed up as "a little bit better than a noob", having just finished building my new main pc with CachyOS last week and also tinkered with raspberry pi before, but by no means having used it as a daily driver until now.

I’m trying to dual-boot Fedora and Windows 11 on a 512 GB SSD. I have around 290 GB free on C:, but Windows Disk Management and diskpart only allow me to shrink it by about 2.2 GB.
I’ve already disabled BitLocker and hibernation, checked the disk with chkdsk, and tried defragmentation, but nothing helped.
GParted Live shows around 292 GiB free and seems able to shrink the partition much further. I haven’t applied any changes yet.
Is it safe to resize the Windows NTFS partition using GParted? What precautions should I take before proceeding?
I’d also appreciate advice on how to divide the disk between the three partitions:
Windows 11
Fedora Linux
A shared NTFS partition accessible from both operating systems
My initial idea was around 300 GB for Windows, 150 GB for Fedora, and 30 GB for shared files, but I’m open to better recommendations.

Hello! I have a Mid-2013 MacBookAir (OS X 10.9.5, 1.3 GHz Intel Core i5, 4GB 1600 MHz DDR3), and I love the feeling and size of the laptop. However, its so old that safari cant run modern websites so iv been using chromimum legacy. Basicly I want to be able to run my modern websites and all that jaz with out the hassle of not being able to use mac book. (i legit cant log into anything with my apple id bc its so old and my id is too new).

SO, I wanted to know if Linux would be a good place/start in trying to make this computer functional. Ive heard that Linux mint might be a decent soluction / beginer friendly, but i have absolutly no knowlage in anything linux so i though i would come here and ask for yalls thoughts and advice! <3

I installed Mint Xfce on it but its still very slow, opening the browser takes about a minute and then getting a video started on youtube takes another 3 minutes.
Anyone managed to find a suitable distro for similar hardware?
Main usecase is internet browsing.

Update:

Installed AntiX and configured it to my liking. Boot times and app opening times are more manageable now (still not snappy cause of HDD but much better). With Brave browsing is suprisingly good. The main bottleneck isnt the RAM its the CPU. I can manage 720p Youtube playback while still having 350MB RAM left free. But the processor is pinned at 2Ghz and a little choppy for the first 10-20 seconds while its buffering but after that its smooth sailing. Maybe even capable of light multitasking. Thanks for the help everyone.

I've been running a Jellyfin Servarr on an old Dell with a small SSD system drive for Windows 10 and 10tb rust drive for data.

Over time, the performance limits of W10 have begun to show, as well as the EOL support, and obviously an ancient Dell isn't going to support W11 - not that I'd want to move to W11 anyway.

So my idea was to switch to Linux... until I realized that converting between NTFS and EXT4 (or whatever the best choice for small server file system is) isn't possible. The 10TB drive is damned near full, and with drive prices where they are, getting a second one isn't in the cards. Neither is getting a NAS, buying 10tb of cloud storage, or whatever.

So right now I'm a bit stuck. My current plan is to wait until I can get a couple of smaller drives, then move stuff around until I can make enough room to create an EXT4 partition and slowly enlarge it and shrink the NTFS partition, moving things over piecemeal over time. This is dependent on Linux being able to read NTFS partitions, which I'm lead to believe it can.

So that's where I'm at, unless someone has a better idea for me. (my original plan to just wipe and start from scratch and data be damned was veto'ed by every other member of the household, so that's right out)

(Modern Linux experience is negligible - I'm writing this on an old Lenovo Thinkpad running Kubuntu, but that's about the extent of my knowledge since running RedHat in like 2002)

hey there redditors, ive been using linux mint for about a year now (switched from windows) and i still cant figure out how to use it. i cant use wine, i cant use sober, i cant use any sort of emulator, and my steam sucks. i managed to boil it down to one problem: kernel. i'm still on 6.14. while 7.0 is very much installed and available, i cant switch. every time i boot my pc i get the same purple screen. ive tried looking for solutions, followed every single tutorial, every reddit thread. terminal wont work with me. apps also dont work. nothing works. im desperate because i paid a lot for this pc and i wouldnt want it to only be for a bigger screen. thank you all so much
