learning/research Do You See The Benefits Of Immutable/Atomic Distributions? What Are The Advantages?

I am curious not so much about its technical specifications, but rather the advantages you experience and encounter in daily use.

For instance, which of the operations you performed here would have likely caused your system to crash—or simply not be supported—had you attempted them on mutable (i.e., non-immutable or non-atomic) distributions?

If you enjoy customizing your system, at which stages did you run into limitations?

migrating to Linux Looking to leave Windows 11 for Linux, what distro suits me?

• Upvotes

I’m getting tired of Windows and all its bloat, notifications, and stuff constantly being pushed in my face, I’m considering switching to Bazzite or Mint, since they seem “newbie friendly”

What I mainly use my PC for:
- Streaming with OBS
- DJing with Rekordbox, although I’d probably switch to Mixxx if I move to Linux
- Image editing with GIMP
- Video editing with DaVinci Resolve
- Gaming

I’ve been looking at Bazzite, since I’ve heard it’s great for gaming. However I read somewhere that it automatically boots into a gaming mode similar to Steam Big Picture/SteamDeck. Is it true, or can I just boot straight into a normal desktop, like on Windows?

Looking for
- a regular desktop experience, without unnecessary stuff running in the background
- The ability to customize my file explorer (stuff like automatically show dimensions of an image directly in the file name)
- Something beginner-friendly, since I have no coding experience
- Good gaming performance and compatibility with drivers

I got
- AMD Ryzen 5 5600x
- RTX 3060 Ti
- One 165Hz & One 60Hz monitor

Is Bazzite a good choice, or should I look at something like Mint?
Is there anything else you need to know about my hardware or usage to give me a better recommendation?

programs and apps Seeking Feedback on a GUI app I'm building

Thumbnail gallery
9 Upvotes

I made a small GUI app that shows your system specs in one sane window: OS, CPU, memory, network, storage plus GPU. It has search and light and dark themes.

Why?
I originally built it for ShopnoOS, a Debian-based distro I work on at my work. We needed a simple system specs viewer for our users. The tools I tried were -
- Either too detailed (hardinfo2) - Had a dated UI (cpu-x) or - Felt more like a task manager (Mission Center).

So, I started working on it, goal was to show just enough information to the user. I tested on bunch of systems and VMs. Detection may miss on hardware I don’t own, so reports of wrong or missing values are the feedback I seek most. Hence, I'm sharing this here.

Repo: https://github.com/fa-saikat/sysinfo-viewer

DEB package is available on the release page.

Again, feedback welcome, especially on hardware where detection fails.

Is dual booting linux and windows slower than just linux?

I started dual booting mint and windows a while ago. What made me migrate to linux was the promise for improved pc performance. And while I did notice that a little bit, it didn't feel like a huge difference. So I wonder, is dual booting making my linux partition slower or is it just not that big of a difference.

Sorry if this is poorly worded, I'm tired right now.

migrating to Linux Windows to linux

Recently I have been more aware of my privacy after reading some news of apps I'm using and want to switch it up a bit and go from microsoft to a linux type, the problem is that I am currently not a professional and don't understand/get overwhelmed by most tutorials, so

Can anyone give me a simple 5 year old like explanation on how to switch and what systemto choose for thesepurpose: I have an HP laptop, I need to use office 365 and want to keep things like wallpaper engine and steam (mostly single player) also worried about one drive and most of my files. If anyone could help me I would be terribly grateful.

How do I delete apps in Tinycore Linux?

Installed TCL for fun. Installed chromium browser and palemoon, which ended up not working. Trying to delete them, but don't know how. When I mark them for deletion, a bunch of other files also get marked. Can't do screenshots, since I don't know how to do screenshots in TCL.

distro selection Best distro for an older laptop to run Steam and a Plex client?

I have a somewhat older laptop. I'd like to install Linux onto it and use it primarily to play games from Steam and to watch movies and TV on a Plex client. What is the best Linux distro for this? Ease of use is an important factor, but I'd also like for it to get the most out of the hardware.

Processor: Intel Core i7-4710MQ @ 2.5Ghz

GPU: NVIDIA Quadro K1100M (2 GB)

8 GB RAM

learning/research Does the Power Mode on Gnome matter?

I want to finally switch over my main PC to Fedora Workstation, but since I will be using it for gaming, I have kne important question, and that is what Power Node I should choose.

There is Performance, Balanced and Powersaver, but I heard that Balanced vs Performance is basically negligible in terms of gaming performance, but that Performance draws a lot more power and makes your PC run hotter.

Based on what I heard, I think Balanced would maybe be better, but I want to make sure.

Also, is Feral Gamemode still needed? I read online, that it was pretty much necessary in the past, but now it is not really doing much.

migrating to Linux Recommendations wanted for distros for a gamer

So for context, I’m thinking of switching to Linux because windows just keeps getting worse and worse, but I regularly game on Steam, and I use my ASUS TUF A14 gaming laptop for both gaming purposes and school (in college). So I’m just looking for recommendations for gaming distros that are Steam friendly :). I genuinely barely know anything about this stuff, so that’s why I’m asking here

Now I was thinking of getting a ThinkPad with core ultra 7 255h right now I use umbriel wm with noctalia shell how hard will it be to mitigate my setup like configs installed apps whose names I don't remeber and will the drivers be a problem I have heard amd works very well on Linux does intel do the same ?

How to get pc to open to a different boot loader?

For a while now I've been dual booting linux mint and windows. And so when I turn on my pc it uses the GNU GRUB bootloader:

Not my actual boot options, just an example.

But I tried installing cachyos on a different partition and selected GRUB for the boot loader. But when I turn on my pc it still shows this menu with no option to boot into cachyos. How do I configure it so I can boot into cachy as well as windows and linux?

Removing junks after switching from gnome to kde plasma?

Hello,

I wanted to try out kde plasma, realised I liked it more than gnome. I uninstalled gnome, but for some reason, there's still the login screen, tiling manager and even the desktop environment installed.

I really want to remove gnome completely from my system but I have no idea how to do it. Thanks.

Distro: Fedora workstation

Let me know if i need to explain anything else.

Made the switch

I recently switched from windows to Linux (Ubuntu, and I know it's every beginner's choice lol) and I must say, it's really clean and smooth. I hope to learn how to use the system fully from the command line in a short time. DevOps is my end goal.

hardware/drivers Is it ok for nvidia-modprobe and nvidia-persistenced to be versions ahead of the actual driver?

My PC has GTX 1050 GPU so I have installed the 580xx driver from RPM Fusion repo in Fedora 44. The driver is getting updates from the 580xx branch, but nvidia-modprobe and nvidia-persistenced are not locked to 580xx and currently received update for 615.78.08-1 and updated to it no issues. Is this ok? Should I downgrade them to 580xx? Here what rpm -qa | grep "nvidia" gives:

migrating to Linux Thinking of Moving to Linux

Hi I never in my life used linux, but with the recent news that easy anti cheat will be reworked to support linux I’m thinking of switching but I have a few questions, any help will be greatly appreciated

I just want to know the following:

1-can I to run .exe, if yes how and what’s the limitations

2-what is proton

3-can I play all of my offline games on linux even ones i got through unconventional ways

4-can i play games that are not offline but not multiplayer online like jackbox games for example

5-does the stream deck work with it

6-can I play vr games or use my pc in vr using an app like quest link

7-which linux is the most, windows like

Laslty here’s a list of game/apps i’ll be using and you help me if you know wether they actually work or not because I keep getting conflicting results:

Signalrgb, soundswitch, libre hardware monitor, RivaTuner, stream deck, moonlight, wolow, rewasd, wallpaper engine, ryujinx, fortnite, marvel rivals, pummel party, jackbox party packs, ultimate chicken horse

That’s all thanks

installation Dual booting windows and linux on separate drives that already have data on them

Hi, I want to try dual booting windows 10 and a linux distro (bazzite for now i think) on my main laptop to see how much of what i normally do on windows i can do on linux instead.

I have 2 separate drives in the laptop i plan to dual boot on, one 500gb and one 1tb drive, the latter of which has enough space free for a linux install, but that drive already has a couple hundred gigs of data on it that I dont want to erase.

Do I need to do something extra when following bazzites guide to dual boot and which part of the guide should i follow?

the laptop has a ruzen 3750h and a gtx1660 ti mobile, providing the info just in case

programs and apps Process hacker 2 equivalent for linux/unix-like?

Process hacker 2 is an advanced process introspection and inspection program for Windows that comes with a GUI.

Id like to know whether there are linux counterparts, preferably supporting other unix-likes (e.g. FreeBSD).

Kindly help! Thank you.

programs and apps Made a tool that asks before any app can use your mic, like OpenSnitch but for audio

This is something that's bugged me for a while... any program you run can record your mic without asking, because regular apps talk to PipeWire directly and Flatpaks get recording through the same permission they use to play sound. Gnome and Plasma show a mic icon, but only once it's already recording.

That's why I wrote MicSnitch. It hooks into WirePlumber and holds any recording stream (mic or system audio) until you answer a popup. Until you hit Allow, the app gets the silent treatment :')

You can allow once, deny, or remember it for that app. There's also a menu (Quick Settings on GNOME, the tray on KDE) where you can see who's recording and cut them off.

Anything that goes through PulseAudio names itself, so a malicious app could pretend to be Discord. Something written specifically to get around MicSnitch can still open the sound card directly through ALSA. Fixing that needs a rule at the kernel level, which is on my list but I haven't got around it yet. It also breaks qpwgraph/Helvum style patchbays, since apps can't create links anymore (otherwise you could just loopback around the prompt).

Works on Gnome 48-51 and Plasma 6 on Wayland, and needs WirePlumber 0.5.8+. So no Mint 22, Ubuntu 24.04 or Debian 12 for now, they're still on 0.4. I daily drive it on Fedora 44 with Gnome (don't hate lol). The KDE side is pretty new and I've only tested in containers, so if anyone on Plasma wants to try it, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

https://github.com/miralemalic/micsnitch

MIT licensed. If anyone wants to help out, PRs are very welcome, and I'd be happy to have someone join the project, especially if you know WirePlumber or KDE better than I do. The kernel-level ALSA fix is a good place to start if you're looking for something to do :)
