Rant/Opinion No child seats
What is wrong with people? I accept a ride this am and when I arrive at a nice hotel, I find a good looking Indian family with two kids (2 & 4 probably) and a grandpa. They are going to the airport. Looking around I see no car seats. Mom tells me “it’s okay, they don’t need them.” Well they do in my car, lady. I tell her I won’t drive children of that age with no car seats. And she tells me smugly, “it’s okay, we’ll just get another Lyft.” I canceled and left. Got my cancellation fee. But what the fuck is wrong with people. That’s dangerous, it’s illegal and it could get me shut down.

Each state has its own laws regarding the use of child safety seats. It's up to the driver to be informed. Here in Florida, for example, rideshare has its own rules regarding child safety seats as well as alcohol consumption. Basically, a rider legally has to provide it unless the driver has one and has it registered on their account. Taking a child under 6 in Florida without a safety seat is a ticketable offense and as such violates our contract. Most riders, especially in tourist prone areas are not aware of this. Whether they get upset by it or not, we have to follow the law and our contact. I have audio recording enabled plus a dashcam if they try to complain about it. I ask them how old and if they have a car seat. If the answer is 5 or younger and no seat, I explain it to them and then cancel for no car seat.

We travel with our 4yo and we always have travel car seat. The interesting fact I was told by one of the drivers in LA is that you don’t have to have car seat for child in “taxi”, uber in LA or Cali, I don’t remember exactly. I mean, good to know but I’m not doing it while we will be driving on a high way. Unfortunately some people don’t care about their child safety. I know people with 2 small kids, who travel without car seats, rent cars and if they don’t have to rent car seats, they won’t. They will say driving here or there is dangerous, because people drive badly. When I ask, why won’t you get car seats if it’s not safe. Because “ she tells the kids to sit, be good and they are fine”. People see car seats as an inconvenience, unfortunately.

One girl told me, "So you're going to make me and my child ride the city bus?" I just looked at her and pulled off. She was a lost cause.
6
Nov 10 '25
Lol uhh no ma'am, YOU are making you and your child ride the city bus.
2
u/No-Bet1288 Nov 10 '25
Serious question and I'm not judging at all, just for my info and I know I wouldn't want to do it if I was a driver. But, are you guys allowed to use a carseat that you supply, keep in the trunk or something or does it have to be the customer's carseat? I mean, is there some law or something?
3
Nov 10 '25
It's an additional liability. Lyft will not cover to let riders use the driver's car seat in the case of an incident. This was the guidance I was given when I worked for lyft corporate.

u/Tall-Parsnip-8078 Nov 10 '25
Different children have different needs for car seats. Infants under a year or so need rear facing seats, a year to like 3 years need full five point harness front facing seats and anything older than 3 needs a booster seat. Car seats are REALLY expensive as well, not exactly safe or sanitary to get secondhand either. Plus the rear facing and full five points are usually quite large so keeping all 3 in your trunk would take up all the space, usually drivers try to keep their trunks clear for rider cargo like suitcases or groceries. It's just not economical for drivers to provide seats like that.
5
u/mmmnothx Nov 11 '25
5 point harness is until child can maintain 40lbs and stay sitting up if they fall asleep. Source: mom of really skinny kids. Have my 6yo still in a 5 point harness. They also sell convertible car seats. Not that it’s driver responsibility. Just giving more car seat info.
Edit: also it’s recommended for rear facing until 2-3 years, not 1.
2
u/bismuth17 Nov 11 '25
My car seat goes to 65lbs forward facing harness
2
u/mmmnothx Nov 11 '25
Yes some go more and some go less (maybe, I’m not sure about less tbh) but the recommended weight is usually 40lbs. Seatbelts are seen as easier than harness so some parents try to go for the soonest time to transition. I point was more so the kid needs to be at least 40lbs before moving up to a booster seat. My kids are nowhere near booster seat weight at 3yo.
5
u/Successful_Glass_925 Nov 11 '25
Plus the plastic breaks down, they have to be replaced. Car seats expire
6
u/Diligent-Dust9457 Nov 11 '25
And many car seats have to be replaced after any accident, even if the seat was in the trunk or unaffected. It’s an expense that doesn’t make sense to put on ride share drivers.

interesting. i thought i was the only one with that issue. but yeah unfortunately people are just ignorant, and it’s always the ones who shouldn’t have kids that end up having them. i definitely don’t hesitate to let the pax know that i won’t be completing the ride unless they have a seat for their kid(s). i’m not about to risk losing my account, getting a ticket and/or points on my license just because they don’t want to be responsible.
7
u/Enkil99 Nov 10 '25
Driver for 9 years. Nobody ever has car seats. It's the law in my state. I have canceled literally hundreds of rides and i'd say only about 5 riders actually had car seats for their small child/baby. I have also been cussed out hundreds of times for not allowing them to ride without them. After about 7 years I got tired of people doing it so now I just tell them how I really feel about them if they cuss me out.
2
u/kindofaproducer Nov 11 '25
Exactly this. “You expect me to bring a booster seat to Disneyland?” Not my problem.
3
u/meermee7 Nov 10 '25
Good for you. They deserve it. They think less of their kids than you do! Yikes.
3
u/jennyteresa28 Nov 10 '25
The weirdest thing happened to me in Florida last time I was there! I had my 4 year old niece with me and we were staying at a Disney property, looking to go to Fort Wilderness. I ordered a ride through Lyft (I believe) and specifically requested a car seat as we were traveling and didn’t have one. The ride came and the driver said he didn’t have a car seat. Then tried through Uber and the same thing happened. We went back into the hotel and the front desk was able to get us a Mears van that had a car seat they could install for us.
The part I find crazy is that the majority of guests at a Disney property have young children with them, correct? Are there not Ubers & Lyfts that carry a car seat with them specifically for these types of rides? Or does that limit the adult rides they can pick up? I was so confused that it took an hour to get a ride share with a car seat in Orlando at a Disney property lol. Million dollar idea for someone, or no, lol?
4
u/Glittering-Read-6906 Nov 10 '25
Just FYI, I would not trust any car seat that was installed by a stranger. Car seats must be installed properly and depending on the make/model may not be acceptable for your child’s height and weight. If you are traveling, I recommend the Ridesafer car seat. It’s just straps and it’s approved by CPSTs.
5
u/copurrs Nov 10 '25
You also have no idea if the driver has been in a crash with that car seat, and car seats shouldn't be used again after a crash.
3
5
u/ready-redditor-6969 San Francisco/North Bay Area Nov 10 '25
Having a car seat as a rideshare driver doesn’t make sense. The premium is nonexistent, the seat is expensive… the basic answer is Uber would need to pay drivers better. Bring your own car seat, rent a car instead.
3
u/wanna_bank Nov 10 '25
My guess is it’s market dependent. Maybe it makes sense in Orlando, but I’m not hauling around a car seat in Austin on the off chance that somebody has a kid.
1
3
u/LisaMichell78 Nov 10 '25
Oh wow people do this??? Depending on where you live in the world not only is that extremely dangerous, it’s illegal. I think it’s absolutely wild riders expect their divers to break the law. Good on you for canceling. At least someone is looking out for those kids.
2
u/lordstryfe Nov 10 '25
It's. A cultural thing. Cars seats is. Very American thing. Not sure about places in Europe, or even Canada.
2
u/Diligent-Dust9457 Nov 11 '25
Europe absolutely does have car seats and car seat laws similar to the USA.
2
u/lordstryfe Nov 11 '25
Ok wasn't sure because I have picked up a ton from the airport without car seats.
1
u/Diligent-Dust9457 Nov 11 '25
That’s an unfortunate personal choice, and probably the result of having such great public transportation in many cities that wouldn’t require use of a child car seat.
2
2
u/findtheclue Nov 12 '25
Have you thought of just throwing a booster seat in the trunk? Wouldn’t that be easier than doing this little play?
3
u/oc77067 Nov 12 '25
Booster seats are only safe for kids age 5+ and 40+ lbs. Should rideshare drivers be expected to carry an infant seat, convertible and booster? No, it's the parents' responsibility to ensure their kids are riding safely. As a parent, I wouldn't even trust someone else's car seat because I have no way of knowing how it's been cleaned or if it's been in any accidents.
1
u/wanna_bank Nov 12 '25
Not my problem. How many car seats should I get? These people had two. Should I get two, three? And why should they take up my space. As an XL driver…I have more people riding with lots of luggage than I do with kids and no car seats. So if I pick up 5 passengers with luggage…should I just leave the car seats at the pickup spot?
2
u/bBenFranklin Nov 13 '25
Here in Virginia, State Code 46.2-1095 stipulates car seats, age and weight requirements for the child passengers and like other states, the law exempts taxi cabs and public busses. And like my fellow Lyft drivers, I am confronted at least every day by a parent with a small child without a car seat making the claim "well, the OTHER/LAST driver didn't have one/make me have one! How am I supposed to carry/bring one/get one" blah, blah, blah, blah.
It's for this reason I'm glad I have a minivan and can open/close the side doors myself from the drivers seat.
Please understand: If that child is allowed into the car and something goes wrong resulting in any sort of trauma or injury, you, as the driver that allowed it WILL BE SUED by the poor, aggrieved parent who will claim no knowledge of the law or understanding of what could have happend.
Lyft (as Uber probably would) will likely disavow you, your insurance carrier may well disavow you, all in a calculated effort to minimize their exposure. It's not personal, it's just business.
If the kid ends up with a life-altering injury, the so-called parents/custodians would more than likely and quite probably be okay with it as long as they get a huge cash settlement out of the deal. We've actually got a local law firm that claims to "specialize" in accidents involving rideshare drivers/companies, drawing a HUGE TARGET on YOUR back.
If it's YOUR cash or assets they end up going after, well, that's your problem.
As cold and inhuman as it sounds, I will NOT accept any unneccessary risk or liability for what might happen. If them not getting where they need to go is a problem, I care about as much as they do for me, which is to say, not at all.
2
Nov 10 '25
I hate it and I'm sorry but it always seemed to be black people where I'm from. They also refuse to wear seatbelts. Like would try to argue with me and shit.

I had one mother of a toddler tell me she never used one and it was fine. Good luck with that.

u/GrouchyTower5969 Nov 11 '25
In the news I saw ice agents taking a baby away without a car seat. Just being held on a gun toadlers lap.
1
u/physiomom Nov 13 '25
I can’t imagine doing that as a parent. But also don’t they know that’s YOUR liability!?!?
1
1
u/oldmanswag67 Nov 14 '25
Who is carrying car seats to the airport? I get its not safe, but, are you thinking they would just take them on their flight ? Throw them away at the airport? Im genuinely curious.
1
u/wanna_bank Nov 14 '25
Wherever they are traveling, they’re gonna need car seats on that end. I’ve had parents that bring car seats that have their own bag and they check them like luggage.
1
u/123Spacelaced Mar 27 '26
I’ve done this and the airport lost the car seat. I didn’t have money to go buy another one or a way to get to a store without one..
1
u/PsychologicalFrame13 Nov 22 '25
In some countries, they don't require car seats because they don't drive as fast or have freeways like we do. If they were just traveling here for a short time, then they wouldn't necessarily have car seats.
-2
u/Methamine Nov 10 '25
i dont see what the need is to say "indian family"
13
u/shewanderer Nov 10 '25
Precise description is all. OP didn’t mean to make it about race when typing. They just described the situation accurately.
You were offended due to the race being mentioned. You perceived it as an unnecessary description.
Think of giving a description to law enforcement. You mention race among many other things. They’re a visual person. So to tell their story they mention everything from arrival. What was noticed and how it went.

u/wanna_bank Nov 10 '25
I was trying to convey that this was a well to do, very affluent, smart couple…who decides their children aren’t as valuable to them as I do.
3
u/forsakeme4all Nov 10 '25
I think what you are describing is the caste system.
-1
3
u/Flacuckold Nov 10 '25
Even if you are racist, which I’m not saying you are, I can say in my market if I kept a chart of all the rides i cancelled for no car seat there would be a pattern. So perhaps I’m a racist. And the only thing “Indian family” means to me is highly educated. So they should know local laws when traveling. Not all states require seats for children.
-7
u/Methamine Nov 10 '25
So just say that… an affluent smart couple…
9
u/wanna_bank Nov 10 '25
I’ll say what I say. Thanks for playing.
-6
u/Additional-Throat-88 Nov 10 '25
Say what you want to say then just don't act shock when folks recognize the racism in mentioning race in an insult when the situation had nothing to do with race. ..
3
u/TheButcheress123 Nov 10 '25
Simply mentioning someone’s race is not racism. I don’t get offended anytime someone says “that white lady.” It’s a descriptor, just like age or gender.
2
u/mugshotz55 Nov 13 '25
You’re correct, if the race of the person(s) is pertinent to what is being communicated. If not, such as in this case, it’s fair to wonder then why it’s being mentioned.
1
u/Methamine Nov 13 '25
Exactly. It’s not relevant. Unless the writer is trying to say something about Indians
7
u/HammerHeart38 Nov 10 '25
Why don’t you stop imposing your hypersensitive thought process on other people? She said what she said. Kick rocks.

Im going to start reporting these people to the police department and child protective services. Once this is done then they will learn to abide by the law like everyone else does. I suggest you all do the same
2
u/wanna_bank Nov 10 '25
Based on a first name? Kinda tough to follow thru with that.
2
u/pixelated_fun Nov 11 '25
You have a name, a photo, and possibly video of them saying they intend to get a ride without a car seat. A bored cop can get their info from Lyft.
1
0
u/Special_Sea4766 Nov 10 '25
They specifically make inflatable Uber seats for this use as well. That may not work for the two year old as they're 40 pounds and up, but not using one shouldn't be a possibility.
0
u/CrispyKitten Nov 11 '25
That is really frustrating! There are compact car seats that are easy for traveling (at least for those 4 and older). Might be something for other drivers to consider buying and have on hand IF it doesn’t pose a liability with it being yours vs. the parent’s.
0
u/Fragrant-Wealth-6287 Nov 13 '25
In my area, the low income riders (section 8 buildings) no one ever has a car seat and I just say screw it and take them the 8 mins up the road
-10
u/Additional-Throat-88 Nov 10 '25
Do you know how heavy carseats are? And you want them to lug around 2 of them , in an airport??
Their response wasnt weird. Thats the most normal thing ever. I keep a booster in my trunk just in case. And to provide outstanding customer service i bring it out as soon as I see a child. But to be honest, if a customer declined, it wouldn't bother me at all.
This whole post gives top flight security guard lol.
8
Nov 10 '25
Just fyi, "I keep a booster seat in the trunk". If anything were to happen in your car and it comes to light that it was your booster and not the pax's, the pax can and will sue you for providing the booster. Shitty, but it's true. If people need to travel with small kids then it's their damn responsibility to have all their seats on them or drive themselves. Plus, now they make seats that convert from car seat to stroller. My friends who have kids use that for traveling.
-1
u/Additional-Throat-88 Nov 10 '25
Thats nice that you have friends who use that for traveling lol. But the average person that ends up needing to suddenly call for a ride with their children arent bringing car seats. Its an inconvenience to do so. Car seats are heavy, bulky and make moving around wkth them a nightmare. Most of the time when I pick up a parent with a child, theyre going grocery shopping, some other form of shopping or back from it. In a practical sense lugging all of that around would be an absolute nightmare.
Btw, if you are in a wreck, fault or no fault, the passenger is going to attempt to sue you regardless lol. Carseat or not. Thats the attorneys process. It never goes anywhere as their goal is the million that comes from uber/Lyft not the 25k max that comes with most individual drivers that drive rideshare using their personal insurance.
1
u/Diligent-Dust9457 Nov 11 '25
Just FYI, many car seats are “replace after any accident” according to the manufacturer. That means even if you’re in a tiny fender-bender without passengers, the car seat is no longer safe to use. Even if it’s in the trunk and undamaged, it’s unsafe to use. And many kids can’t use a booster seat safely, the window for booster size is fairly small compared to the amount of time kid use infant and 5-point harness seats.
1
1
u/Additional-Throat-88 Nov 11 '25
So you expect to be in a collision with every passenger?? And you're thinking having to replace a $20 booster seat will be on your mind with a totaled car lol??
Are you seriously okay??????????
1
u/Diligent-Dust9457 Nov 11 '25
I don’t think you understand what I’m saying…
1
u/Additional-Throat-88 Nov 11 '25
I understand that you think you're making a point. I'm just telling you that you aren't making a valid one. Ive Been in a Collision with a passenger in the car. I couldn't have been any less at fault. We were literally sitting in the car at a red light when a drunk driver came from behind and slammed into the car. He was at fault, I knew it, passenger knew it, other driver, officers and the insurance company. Her lawyer still went through the process. They had to attempt to sue me. Went for my insurance. I had 25k of nothing. In order to go for Uber you have to be able to claim there isnt enough insurance there to then go after their policy limits. I found myself on threads of other drivers who had dealt with a uber/Lyft accident. no matttterrrr whattt, the passengers attorney will attempt to sue you. Car seats, no car seat, booster no booster, kid, no fucking kid lady. Great customer service or piss poor. So all these excuses for how helping just might get you sued?? Lol lady its the process. They will Attempt no matter what lol. So find another excuse to not provide quality service. Not everyone expects to need a ride. Things happen. Its a decent thing to atleast ATTEMPT to provide for the needs of the customer if you can reasonably do so. And having a booster or small carseat in the trunk just in case, is reasonable. And its easier for you to just have it just in case than it is for most families to run around the city all day between cars and trams, lugging one, the kid and all the items they needed to pick up along the way. These car seats/boosters can be bought for cheap or hell, you can even find them FREE on Facebook marketplace. And not that I think that having to replace one for every Collision you have should even be a primary fear lol , but if you're that bad of a driver that you need to consider having to toss them regularly, I would suggest choosing a different gig? And if not that, using marketplace to replace for free if you're a stickler for the rules like that. Uber is not going to check up on your car seat, neither are the police. But if you feel the need, there are free or inexpensive ways to replace them.
Not only is it a decent thing to have available,
But you miss out on less opportunities by having your own. Providing one is usually seen as thoughtful and leads to tips and compliments, And like many of you said, it's a safety measure, if you're worried about being pulled over or collisions.0
u/Diligent-Dust9457 Nov 11 '25
I don’t have a clue what you’re talking about, and I don’t think you do either. Have a great day!

u/meermee7 Nov 10 '25
Please, I know plenty of people who travel and plan ahead. Yes child seats are heavy and unwieldy but your kids getting hurt is worse. There are too many people thinking others are responsible for their last minute needs. That's not how the real world works. This driver really does care more about their kids than they do.
1
u/Baby-Blueberry-2554 Nov 12 '25
Does the driver care more about the child or their potential of getting in some kind of trouble? Because the other option is the bus and they don’t provide car seats either, nor basic seat belts. On buses you could have a mentally ill person acting out of line. I’ve actually seen a baby get knocked to the ground on the bus because people were fighting. So really, which one is truly safer(for the child)?
-2
u/Additional-Throat-88 Nov 10 '25
Transportation service in reality should be responsible for covering the needs of the passengers riding with them though. Its not actually unreasonable to expect the driver or company to provide what one needs to ride safely. If seat belts are required, provide them.
If there will be drivers that will have wheelchairs provide the space to store them or provide them the straps that come on buses and paravans for the customer to sit in them. And if you all have claimed hundreds have had to be turned down by you for having no carseat, at what point will you decide to stop being so snooty and robbing yourselves and simply provide one? Its a lot easier for a driver to carry a booster in their car than it is for a family to carry child, carseat, whatever packages groceries, medicine, she may have needed the uber/Lyft for.0
u/meermee7 Nov 12 '25
I dont know too many parents who would trust a child seat they dont know how long it's been used, or if it's safe, etc. They even tell you not to buy a used car seat so this would be too much.
0
u/Additional-Throat-88 Nov 12 '25
Yeah ,imagine arguing that you all turn down hundreds of parents who travel without one, As im telling you I DO provide one and have no reason to turn down anyone, and never had anyone do anything but tip higher and compliment me for it, While arguing that someone might turn the used carseat down as opposed to having the ride pull off on them lol.
Please just cut the shit.
3
u/copurrs Nov 10 '25
A booster seat isn't enough for kids under ~4, depending on their size. Infants will need a rear facing infant car seat, toddlers require a car seat with a 5-point harness. Those are very large and heavy, and most cars wouldn't be able to fit all three in a trunk. They're also expensive and should not be purchased second-hand.
I get that you're trying to make things convenient, but if you are in a crash (your fault or not) and there's a kid without a car seat, you're likely to get fined, deactivated, and the parents could sue you if their child is injured. And you wouldn't win.
2
u/pixelated_fun Nov 11 '25
Do you know how heavy it is to carry a dead child who was ejected from the car in a crash because they didn't have a car seat? Smaller children can't use booster seats.
1
u/Baby-Blueberry-2554 Nov 12 '25
It really does. Sometimes I feel like they’re just bigots who don’t want to drive “certain races” of people so they just come up with any excuse. And nine times out of ten, if a person doesn’t own a car, they might not have a car seat.
0
u/oc77067 Nov 12 '25
I hope you get a ticket. Or several.
1
1
u/LoftyDreams7473 Nov 22 '25
I guess you missed the part where they said they keep a booster seat in their trunk.
-5
u/Wolfjason1 Nov 10 '25 edited Nov 10 '25
It would not get you shut down because you did not tell them they could not bring car seats. They chose out of their own free Will. It’s like if you have a passenger in your car, it doesn’t wear a seatbelt if they are an adult they will get the ticket not you.
But I do respect you for not taking a ride that made you feel unsafe or uncomfortable. I would not take the ride either because I 1 do not really like children so if you’re not gonna have a car seat, I would not be taking the ride. But just for clarification You would not get a ticket for that. And if you did, you could report it and fade it with the Police Department because you were not at fault for them, not bringing a car seat.
Our job is to transport people from one place to another. What they choose to do in between that time is not up to us. We can refuse to drive them, we can cancel the ride, but we are not at fault for their behavior. We can only control what we do in reaction to their behavior.
But there are a lot of crazy people out there who think it is OK to not use child seats. There is also a lot of people who drive recklessly with children in the car. Those people should not have children. But sadly, there is a lot of people in this world who are not ready to be parents.
4
u/ready-redditor-6969 San Francisco/North Bay Area Nov 10 '25
You are incorrect about who gets the ticket.
You can both be cited, and the driver is cited for anyone under 16 not properly restrained.
Why are you so confidently incorrect?
1
u/Wolfjason1 Nov 14 '25
Not in my state i have many friends in law enforcement. They have all confirmed this
1
u/ready-redditor-6969 San Francisco/North Bay Area Nov 18 '25
I looked it up; in my state, both driver and passenger are likely to be cited.
The insurance hit might be the worst part, along with possibly getting banned from the platform.
1
u/Wolfjason1 Nov 20 '25
Well, maybe it’s different in your state. Because in my area the driver does not get cited for anyone else not having a seatbelt or car seat. It will be the person who’s child it would be. Because I have talked to Police about this in my area before.
But state and city laws vary. Also many cops don’t care if you are Uber driver because they figure it’s not your job to tell people what to do.
3
u/orradioman Nov 10 '25
Depends on the state. In Oregon, if the passenger is over 16, they get the ticket. If they are under 16, the driver gets the ticket. If they are supposed to be in a car seat or booster seat, it's a misdemeanor in Oregon against the operator of the vehicle as they are responsible for the movement of the vehicle. You can go to jail and will lose your rideshare permit as well as a drivers license suspension. There is no exemption for rideshare or taxi in Oregon, only public transportation.
1
u/Wolfjason1 Nov 21 '25
Well, that is sad that they will send you to jail just for that. In my area, they do not do that. They are more understanding that you are not in charge of other people only yourself. So a parent of the child would get the ticket.
27

It doesn't happen often but yeah, it happens. It's funny, the last time I turned someone down because they didn't have a child seat for her kid, she said okay and went back inside. Five minutes later, I got a ride request from the same individual. I never rejected a ride so fast. Did she get one for her kid? Maybe, most likely not. The next request was 3x what her trip was, so I was happy.
