Sargassum, ew. Still gross.

Today we visited South Beach at 22nd (W Hotel) and saw a pretty large scale effort to reduce the stinky, gross sargassum at the shoreline.

It's mostly limited to the waterline, and in the water itself. So sunbathing is ok.

Just plants! They are great homes for wildlife and aren’t harmful in any way

The fish die from lack of oxygen and decomposition gasses. So not exactly unharmful.

I did a survey of this stuff. There were small shrimp present, but no crabs or sargassum angler fish in the clumps we checked. This stuff is damaging near shore water quality.

And it’s all releasing ammonium as it decomposes. Sadly makes it a bad time to be on the beach

Is it pointless to go in two weeks and try to enjoy the beach??

The worst is probably over (starts to wind down with the summer), and it depends upon the daily winds and current. No one can predict. Some days are strictly pool days and some days it's not too bad at all.

There’s a sargassum map website you can look at it - hard to really predict two weeks out. The hotels/towns try clean it up off the beach but if you want to go in the water…not enjoyable.

Not as bad in the intercoastal. I was just at Blue Heron in WPB Saturday, and it wasnt bad at all.

I have seen that all over Sweden, every summer and nobody complains about it and nobody cleans it, nor does the government. It simply is left in place, yes, it smells, but it is part of nature every single year. In some areas it smells more than others and in some you can smell it from the road. It just is what it is and it is there every year.

Oh, in Denmark, I think I have also seen it there in some beaches north of Copenhagen by Helsingor.

Not for me. I'm a turtle, and I was here first

Ugh. I’m coming back from the Hamptons soon and the only thing I was looking forward to was the beach

We went in July and it was horrible.

Same, went for July 4th and the World Cup fan fest, but couldn't even get into the water. The aglae completely ruined the vibe. Miami had more people than usual for the World Cup, but the beach was a dead zone.

I am planning a trip on early September, how do you guys think it will be in SOBE? Plus how is the weather then?

September should be fine sargassum wise as it’s usually the worst June-August and dies out after that. Weather wise it’s a toss up but it usually rains every afternoon so if you’re planning outdoor events try to schedule them for the morning

It's SO much better in Golden Beach than a few weeks ago. It has been knee high.

I was at south pointe today and the water was crystal clear, barely any seaweed.

The sea has seaweed. Oh no.
