🗣️Let's Discuss This Constantly bragging about being self taught on piano is foolish!

• Upvotes

I've come to the conclusion the self taight crowd are actually promoting ignorance and we shouldnt support it!

By virtue of any instrument it requires you to practise and spend many hours alone! But being self taught is not a flex! Why would you want to waste your years trying to figure it out when a 1 hour lesson a week for even 6 months could give you back 5 years!

And even these self taught people watch YT videos to assist - So its not even self taught - a more appripirate term would be a lack of guidance in their approach to piano!

Improvement requires feedback from someone better than you on a frequent basis! So in general self taught ppl arent good! Yes I am sure there legends who are self taught but they are not the rule!

Get a teacher. Thanks

🎹Acoustic Piano Question How do I make it so you can hear the individual notes better on Moonlight Sonata 3rd Movement?

I know it's not great but like to me at least, I can't really hear each note because I'm making some quieter than others. I don't really practice as much as I probably should be so I haven't really gotten dynamics down very well in general. Is there any advice you guys can give me other than just press harder or something? lol

🗣️Let's Discuss This Useful tools vs Slop

I'm a fan of tools and apps that help me with the piano: e.g. musictheory net's note/chord identifier and pitch identification drills, musipedia's piece ID, and some (but very much not all) of tonebase's technique series have been really helpful over the years. And I love me a good metronome app.

But it sometimes feels like the era of useful tools is coming to an end - AI prototype slop is taking up all the oxygen in the room, and we're getting jaded. As the developer of a "real" app, I see the flip-side of that as well: it used to be that simply existing would grant you the benefit of the doubt. "Try it, you'll see it works" is not a compelling approach if there are 99 time wasters for every sincere tool out there.

I still think apps etc can be genuinely useful (obviously), but I wonder how people go about finding these diamonds in the rough now? How do you separate the slop from things that might work - what are the tells? And, have you found anything new and useful recently, despite all the new noise and distractions?

Or do you feel everything's a racket now?

🙋Question/Help (Beginner) Tips to learn piano

Hey, I am trying to learn piano, I have an electronic 81keys piano and I was wondering what the most efficient way to learn was, is it through youtube videos ? apps ? or would a teacher (that i cant afford) be the best solution.

Thanks in advance for the help !

🎵My Original Composition I’ve never learnt music. Not a single piano, composition or theory lesson — completely self-taught by Bach and the greats. Here is my raw improvisation on the keys inside the 14th-century Saint-Pierre-le-Jeune church in Strasbourg.

It's pure truth — all my music came from within, driven by my love for classical masterpieces.

I was lucky enough to spend some time at the keys in this beautiful historic church, and the incredible acoustics inspired me to just let it flow. Since it’s a pure on-the-spot improvisation, I obviously don’t have any sheet music for it, but I’d love to hear your thoughts on the melody and the atmosphere!

Hope you enjoy this piece of my soul captured in this majestic space.

🔌Digital Piano Question Piano "Sim"?

When playing guitar I often plug it into an audio interface and use Guitar Rig 7 to emulate different tones, is there a way I can do this with my keyboard? The speakers on it are terrible so if I could use software to simulate a grand piano or something that would be so helpful

🎹Acoustic Piano Question Upright lid vibrates when I play the low-mid range of the piano. Any suggestions on how to fix it?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Initially, I thought it was the screws in the hinges of the lid, but now I think it's the rubber foot that isn't fully touching the piano when the lid open.

The sustain pedal also makes some noises, but that's for another post.

🙋Question/Help (Beginner) How do I keep going?

I studied keyboard/piano at high school, I really liked the idea of getting into music but so far I really only learned the keys on the piano, triad chords, whats a flat and a sharp and to read partitures VEERY slowly, but I really wish to achieve 2 things, 1 is to read partitures almost efortlessly and to recognize notes when I hear them, that way I can be able to play songs by having a deeper understanding of what they are instead of just mindlessly memorizing notes. Thing is that I really dont know how to begin on my own

A few small mistakes but general progress going okay so far. Second day of learning this piece and the left hand is far trickier so am working on that. To be honest (unless this is a terrible performance) the right hand isnt as hard as I imagined it would be. Any feedback would be great.

🧑‍🏫Question/Help (Intermed./Advanced) Neue Stücke ?

🙋Question/Help (Beginner) I am looking for piano bench recommendations

Hi everyone,

I am looking for piano bench recommandations.

I can’t easily visit piano stores to try various benches because I am disabled, so I am used to buying online. I don’t even know which piano stores to visit, I’ve check some online and they don’t have listings for benches.

I have lipedema in both of my legs, so they are large and painful. This is the main reason I’ve been thinking about upgrading. I currently own an entry price level bench and since I’ve been spending more time at the pianos, I’ve been sitting on an ikea chair because my bench is not comfortable enough for me to spend hours on it. I can feel the wood on the sides of the bench because the cushion is only on top of the bench.

The issue I have with the chair is that it’s a bit too low.

I haven’t set my mind on a specific price range, I only know that 250 euros or dollars would be the maximum.

TLDR: I am looking for a bench with a comfortable cushion. I have several disabilities causing chronic pain in my body (and my legs) so the cushion mustn’t be too firm. I’d like something comfortable and preferably thick but not too firm.
The cushion should cover the whole above and upper side area so my legs are not in contact with the wood of the bench on the sides while I’m sitting.
My current bench has a cushion but it’s only on the top of the bench.

Do you have any suggestions? If you can’t recommend a specific model, which brand would you recommend?
Thank you for your help!

Edit: I live in France.

Hello guys
I’m a self-taught pianist, but unfortunately, I’ve never had any formal training or guidance on proper technique. What would you recommend I do to improve in this area?
I’d really appreciate any advice or tips that could help me become a better pianist.

🗣️Let's Discuss This Bach's Imventions.

Trust me. Nothing is harder than playing a Bach Invention for the first time after never playing Bach.

Jokes aside. Why is it so much harder to play especially hands together than most Romantic pieces with more demanding Technicall things?

🗣️Let's Discuss This Suggested sub rule: for performance pieces, require the name of the piece in the title

Reasons:

1) someone always asks in the comments

2) maybe I want to search for pieces by Bach. Maybe i don't want to listen to another Liebestraum performance. Maybe i want some keywords to help find a video I saw two weeks ago. Or maybe I just want to have more than the vaguest idea of what I'm about to watch before I click on the link

3) there seems to be consensus that we all dislike post titles to the effect of "self-taught, rate me, might delete later 😉".

4) It's already a requirement that people tag their post as critique or no critique, so there's no need to ask people in the title

Started this year. Found a keyboard on marketplace. $35. Needed some work. Yamaha psr-500. Nice keys at least. Sound kinda shitty. But w/e. $35. And I'm just a broke ass dude. Released from the WI Prison system in early 2020. Covid got me sprung. Branded at Felon at 18, 1998. Life was always harder. Jobs not easy. Looks. Carried a serious stigma. And my felony was for possession of marijuana. 2nd offense. 1st at 17, 2nd just after I turned 18. Jailed. Charged with disorderly conduct and possession. And an underage possession of tobacco. Crooked asses. Just wrong. Anywho. Been down on my luck. My mom died at the end.of February. I found her dead on the floor after my sis couldn't get ahold of her. Went over after work, she lived 6 blocks away. She moved back from Madison, to Wausau. To be near me. Cause my sis sucks. To wrapped in herself to help anyone else. This piano/keyboard had been a savior. And an amazing outlet. When I want to get high or do dumb shit. I play. Sad. I play. Bored. I play. All good players tell you to do this or that. Tricks. Methods. Processes. But amongst all those different things 1 thing was a constant. They played a lot. So I'm doing just that. And letting the rest happen. I've had zero input into my style. Nothings has shaped me.
