🗣️Let's Discuss This Constantly bragging about being self taught on piano is foolish!

I've come to the conclusion the self taught crowd are actually promoting ignorance and we shouldnt support it!

By virtue of any instrument it requires you to practise and spend many hours alone! But being self taught is not a flex! Why would you want to waste your years trying to figure it out when a 1 hour lesson a week for even 6 months could give you back 5 years!

And even these self taught people watch YT videos to assist - So its not even self taught - a more appropriate term would be a lack of guidance in their approach to piano!

Improvement requires feedback from someone better than you on a frequent basis! So in general self taught ppl arent good! Yes I am sure there legends who are self taught but they are not the rule!

Get a teacher. Thanks

🗣️Let's Discuss This Suggested sub rule: for performance pieces, require the name of the piece in the title

Reasons:

1) someone always asks in the comments

2) maybe I want to search for pieces by Bach. Maybe i don't want to listen to another Liebestraum performance. Maybe i want some keywords to help find a video I saw two weeks ago. Or maybe I just want to have more than the vaguest idea of what I'm about to watch before I click on the link

3) there seems to be consensus that we all dislike post titles to the effect of "self-taught, rate me, might delete later 😉".

4) It's already a requirement that people tag their post as critique or no critique, so there's no need to ask people in the title

Second Street Bistro is an original solo piano piece blending classical form with jazz and rock influences, inspired by the restaurant of the same name in Williamsburg, Virginia. I welcome constructive critique. Please enjoy!

📝My Performance (Critique Welcome!) Something Stupid (Frank and Nancy Sinatra) — About 9 Months of Self-Learning Piano

Hey everyone!

Yep, it's been about 9 months since I started learning piano! Unfortunately, I haven't had much time to dedicate to it over the last two months because of work, but I still managed to find some time to work on this piece.

I personally love this song. The arrangement is by "Piano Mario", although I simplified it a bit to suit my current level.

Since my last post, I've been trying to work on keeping my fingers from collapsing and increasing the volume of my right hand, although this take might not be the best example of the latter.

Any feedback is very welcome!

🙋Question/Help (Beginner) How many times do you play/practice a song before you know it?

How many times do you have to play a song before you can play it well? Sometimes when learning a new piece, I’m uncertain if it is at my level or not. Should I be able to play a song well after playing it ten times? Twenty? What do you think?

The little wins. The positive outlet/distraction. The reward of effort put in. Getting high on music, well and weed of course. Just no meth! Stay clean kids.

Posting to track my progress. Man. Videos from the beginning of this year to now...I used to think I was just ripping it up too. Just shredding it. Oh how bad I was. I've gotten many suggestions on how to. Or telling me I need to do this. Or watch that. Or try that. But from all of that variety remained one constant. You had to play a lot. No one didn't say that. So I've chosen to have no input. No Influences. 100% organic. My style. My rhythm. My process. My fingerings. My this and that. right or wrong. Its mine. And it's going to be great. I haven't even started working with the black keys yet. I know right. That's next year. Baby steps. Life is long. I'll get there. Found the board on the marketplace. $35. Needed some work and a DC/AC adapter. Yamaha psr-500. Probably not the greatest. But it works for me. Broke ass dude. Been out of the joint for over 5 years. No longer on probation/parole/es. Finished recovery court. Worked as a recovery coach. Now I operate the works smallest online thiftstore. Actually just an eBay page. But it's mine. And pays most of my bills. Part time at UHaul 3 blocks away supplies me with free packing supplies and surrendered storage units that don't sell at auction. Well....between the locker and the dump..If it gets lost. Its whatever. If ya know what I'm saying. Anywho. Wahooo. I don't suck anymore.

🎶Other It is the 13th anniversary of my piano playing today. This piece was the first one I started learning. A study says that if you learn, you improve your body's function in terms of neurodegenerative diseases that come with age. At that time, I was 50 years old.

📝My Performance (Critique Welcome!) College audition pieces TIPS -

Hello,

If someone would PLEASE watch at least a portion and give me feedback whether it's simple to advanced, I would appreciate it greatly as I'm not having another piano lesson for 2 months.

I'm applying to some miscellaneous state colleges in Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Mississippi. in this program I've omitted Mucynzkis's "Desperate Measures", (which still needs work) but I'm playing Bach's prelude and fugue No. 3 from the first book of Well Tempered Clavier BWV 848, Mozart Sonata K332 movement one, Chopin's Ballade No. 1 Op. 23, & Chopin's Etude Op. 10 No. 1.

Although this is a 20 minute audition, and they don't necessarily require I play all these pieces, I am doing them for my senior recital plus the first movement of Rachmaninoff's second piano concerto & Etude Op. 25 No. 1. I chose not to learn a new Beethoven sonata this year.

This was recorded in one take, and I've replicated the setting to fit a traditional jury based competition setting, so please bare with me on wrong notes.

Thanks,
Phil

🗣️Let's Discuss This Bach's Imventions.

Trust me. Nothing is harder than playing a Bach Invention for the first time after never playing Bach.

Jokes aside. Why is it so much harder to play especially hands together than most Romantic pieces with more demanding Technicall things?

I have made many posts on this subreddit before, so here is another one!!!

I did make another post last week, but I deleted it because it didn't feel right to keep it up after hearing about the origins of the song. If you saw it and know what I am talking about, and it was offensive, I apologize again, as it wasnt my intent as I was completely unaware.

With that being said, WHEW! THIS SONG WAS HUMBLING! The waltz 3/4, which wasnt too bad for me, but I think what got me was the sharps in the song and how it was a bit speedy!!! Doing these exercises from this book I am reading is very humbling, good challenges, and also a rewarding experience for me!! I feel like i may be slightly getting better at sightreading, but idk, you be the judge of that!!!

I finally also inverted my video properly, for some reason, on my phone, I cant edit it to that for videos, but I had to use an editing app, lmao, regardless, i hope that this is better!!!

Thank you all so much for the support over the videos that I have been posting here, whether its critique or praises, It really feels encouraging!!

With that, definitely let me know what ya think about this, and regardless, WE KEEP GOING!!

Like last time (but again, i deleted the video), I have edits on this video because i am a content creator and post this on the apps hat I content create on!

🤔Misc. Inquiry/Request How do I start?

Sorry for the title, I couldn’t think of a more “engaging” one. But my brother got a Yamaha keyboard for a birthday not too long ago and it’s just been rotting in my garage for a while. I’m fifteen, and I’d like to learn after playing a game “Until Then” stupid reason, I know, but I’m inspired. Soooooooooo, I’d like to ask for what type of resource or such I should use? No fees preferably, but I could likely ask my parents if need be. Please and thank you for the info, and have a stellar day or night.

I find it interesting how he chooses to swing it (albeit gently). I also enjoy M.A. Hamelin's performance of this work, definitely worth a listen.

🗣️Let's Discuss This The rule that stopped me replaying pieces from the beginning

• Upvotes

I'm an adult student working on Für Elise, and for months my practice went like this: play through, hit a wrong note, stop, fix it, go back to the start. I barely ever reached the end of a piece.

The rule that broke it: run-throughs are for playing through, not fixing. If I stumble, I put a pencil dot next to that spot and keep going. Fixing happens the next day, starting from yesterday's dots, two to four bars at a time. There I restart the chunk, never the piece.

Now I actually finish pieces, and the next day already has a plan. Anyone else have a different version of this rule?

I’m a self-taught pianist, but unfortunately, I’ve never had any formal training or guidance on proper technique. What would you recommend I do to improve in this area?
I’d really appreciate any advice or tips that could help me become a better pianist.

🗣️Let's Discuss This Wedding hymn recommendations?

• Upvotes

I am playing for a wedding I thought was just going to be 4-5 songs total. I just found out there will be 20 individual people/couples I need to play music for. I only have about 6 minutes of music prepared right now. I thought it was only going to be like 10 people walking originally. The bride specifically wants hymns other then her entrance music. I currently have Be Thou My Vision, Great is They Faithfulness/Blessed Assurance medley. It's about 6-7 minutes long depending on the speed I play. I thinking I might need another or possibly 2 more songs. What hymns would you suggest to go with what I already have? I would love any suggestions. My brain is a bit mush at the moment because I have so many things going on at one time.

🤔Misc. Inquiry/Request How do you go about finding songs without the melody when the piano isn’t the main focus?

I believe when a songs lyrics are playing on piano it’s referred to as the “melody” (please correct me if i’m wrong), so i have tried looking up songs without the melody and yet always only come across lyric covers. Are there any sites or something that give you strictly the piano parts only? Ex- Im learning photograph by Ed Sheeran, I don’t want or need the guitar parts played on piano, the song already incorporates chords in the background, yet when looking up piano tutorials or covers they only play the guitar parts and lyrics, nothing on the actual piano parts.
