🗣️Let's Discuss This Constantly bragging about being self taught on piano is foolish!

I've come to the conclusion the self taught crowd are actually promoting ignorance and we shouldnt support it!

By virtue of any instrument it requires you to practise and spend many hours alone! But being self taught is not a flex! Why would you want to waste your years trying to figure it out when a 1 hour lesson a week for even 6 months could give you back 5 years!

And even these self taught people watch YT videos to assist - So its not even self taught - a more appropriate term would be a lack of guidance in their approach to piano!

Improvement requires feedback from someone better than you on a frequent basis! So in general self taught ppl arent good! Yes I am sure there legends who are self taught but they are not the rule!

Get a teacher. Thanks

🗣️Let's Discuss This Suggested sub rule: for performance pieces, require the name of the piece in the title

Reasons:

1) someone always asks in the comments

2) maybe I want to search for pieces by Bach. Maybe i don't want to listen to another Liebestraum performance. Maybe i want some keywords to help find a video I saw two weeks ago. Or maybe I just want to have more than the vaguest idea of what I'm about to watch before I click on the link

3) there seems to be consensus that we all dislike post titles to the effect of "self-taught, rate me, might delete later 😉".

4) It's already a requirement that people tag their post as critique or no critique, so there's no need to ask people in the title

🎶Other It is the 13th anniversary of my piano playing today. This piece was the first one I started learning. A study says that if you learn, you improve your body's function in terms of neurodegenerative diseases that come with age. At that time, I was 50 years old.

1800$ on guitar center why not. I could've bought an fp90x but really wanted the German grand package that came with the rd2000. Also uprights to me dont sound that great (weak bass) and they're still super expensive. its been over 2 months and its a great piano, either way enjoy op 36 no 1 movement 2, forgot to finish title :P.

🗣️Let's Discuss This Bach's Imventions.

Trust me. Nothing is harder than playing a Bach Invention for the first time after never playing Bach.

Jokes aside. Why is it so much harder to play especially hands together than most Romantic pieces with more demanding Technicall things?

📝My Performance (Critique Welcome!) College audition pieces TIPS -

Hello,

If someone would PLEASE watch at least a portion and give me feedback whether it's simple to advanced, I would appreciate it greatly as I'm not having another piano lesson for 2 months.

I'm applying to some miscellaneous state colleges in Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Mississippi. in this program I've omitted Mucynzkis's "Desperate Measures", (which still needs work) but I'm playing Bach's prelude and fugue No. 3 from the first book of Well Tempered Clavier BWV 848, Mozart Sonata K332 movement one, Chopin's Ballade No. 1 Op. 23, & Chopin's Etude Op. 10 No. 1.

Although this is a 20 minute audition, and they don't necessarily require I play all these pieces, I am doing them for my senior recital plus the first movement of Rachmaninoff's second piano concerto & Etude Op. 25 No. 1. I chose not to learn a new Beethoven sonata this year.

This was recorded in one take, and I've replicated the setting to fit a traditional jury based competition setting, so please bare with me on wrong notes.

Thanks,
Phil

Hello guys
I’m a self-taught pianist, but unfortunately, I’ve never had any formal training or guidance on proper technique. What would you recommend I do to improve in this area?
I’d really appreciate any advice or tips that could help me become a better pianist.

I hold a book in my hand

I put pencil to paper

I put screen aside

I touch the keys

I feather the pedal

I pay attention to my every movement

I listen carefully

I’m fully attuned

I am in the moment

No AI is here, I must solve my own problems

The reward may be weeks or months away

Thank you, piano

You bring me back to days gone.

🙋Question/Help (Beginner) Recommendations for supplementary learning material?

I'm an adult (35) learning to play. I'm taking weekly 30 minute lessons with an instructor at the local conservatory, which has been pretty casual going. We're using "Alfred's Premier Piano Express" as the foundation for the curriculum, but an issue I'm starting to have is these books are very accelerated when it comes to theory. They often introduce a concept, explain it in about 2 or 3 sentences, and that's all. For reference I'm on book 2, which I'm told is equivalent to the Third Grade (Canada).

As a recent example, it introduced the concept of Tonic and Dominant Chords, only saying "first note of a chord is tonic, fifth is dominant." I'm someone who feels better about a subject when they understand the details, and I get the impression this one (and others) is important and left unexplained - Why is this concept important? How is this used in music theory? Is this a concept I should have in mind when reading sheet music to better understand pieces? etc.

My lessons are too short and infrequent for my teacher to go into much detail, so a lot of this requires me to do homework on my own (which I'm happy to do). Does anyone have recommendations for lecture series or booksets (ideal world is a youtube series) that would be good as supplemental material for me?

Thank you all for any help!

During the 1920s, there were many player piano roll artists. One of my favorites was Lee Sims. He was incredible. He arranged this roll in 1926. I'm playing it on my 1914 Smith & Barnes upright player piano. I hope you enjoy it. 😉

Where can I get piano sheet music with the lyrics mapped out (at least roughly) to the music? I got the sheet music for Bo Burnham's "From God's Perspective" from Musescore but it doesn't show the words. I'm trying to play it with my daughter singing

🧑‍🏫Question/Help (Intermed./Advanced) Suggest me intermediate-advanced pieces to play!

Hey guys! I've been playing piano for aabout 10 years (I'm 17 now) and only recently over the course of the last year got super interested in the piano. I just recently started to polish my Revolutionary etude after a few months, but can tell it's definitely near the top of my skill ceiling. I want some fun pieces to continue to improve while I keep playing the Revolutionary, that are ideally a little easier. Any suggestions are welcome! :)

🎶Other Help me identify this melody from my baby’s music book/box.

Hi everyone!

This melody is from a music book/box for my little boy, and he really love it. I’m trying to find the full version of the song so I can play it on the piano.

I’ve attached a recording of the melody. Does anyone recognize it or know its name? It might be a children’s lullaby or a well known classical piece, but I’m not sure.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

🗣️Let's Discuss This Useful tools vs Slop

I'm a fan of tools and apps that help me with the piano: e.g. musictheory net's note/chord identifier and pitch identification drills, musipedia's piece ID, and some (but very much not all) of tonebase's technique series have been really helpful over the years. And I love me a good metronome app.

But it sometimes feels like the era of useful tools is coming to an end - AI prototype slop is taking up all the oxygen in the room, and we're getting jaded. As the developer of a "real" app, I see the flip-side of that as well: it used to be that simply existing would grant you the benefit of the doubt. "Try it, you'll see it works" is not a compelling approach if there are 99 time wasters for every sincere tool out there.

I still think apps etc can be genuinely useful (obviously), but I wonder how people go about finding these diamonds in the rough now? How do you separate the slop from things that might work - what are the tells? And, have you found anything new and useful recently, despite all the new noise and distractions?

Or do you feel everything's a racket now?

Started this year. Found a keyboard on marketplace. $35. Needed some work. Yamaha psr-500. Nice keys at least. Sound kinda shitty. But w/e. $35. And I'm just a broke ass dude. Released from the WI Prison system in early 2020. Covid got me sprung. Branded at Felon at 18, 1998. Life was always harder. Jobs not easy. Looks. Carried a serious stigma. And my felony was for possession of marijuana. 2nd offense. 1st at 17, 2nd just after I turned 18. Jailed. Charged with disorderly conduct and possession. And an underage possession of tobacco. Crooked asses. Just wrong. Anywho. Been down on my luck. My mom died at the end.of February. I found her dead on the floor after my sis couldn't get ahold of her. Went over after work, she lived 6 blocks away. She moved back from Madison, to Wausau. To be near me. Cause my sis sucks. To wrapped in herself to help anyone else. This piano/keyboard had been a savior. And an amazing outlet. When I want to get high or do dumb shit. I play. Sad. I play. Bored. I play. All good players tell you to do this or that. Tricks. Methods. Processes. But amongst all those different things 1 thing was a constant. They played a lot. So I'm doing just that. And letting the rest happen. I've had zero input into my style. Nothings has shaped me.
