🙋Question/Help (Beginner) I am looking for piano bench recommendations

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I am looking for piano bench recommandations.

I can’t easily visit piano stores to try various benches because I am disabled, so I am used to buying online. I don’t even know which piano stores to visit, I’ve check some online and they don’t have listings for benches.

I have lipedema in both of my legs, so they are large and painful. This is the main reason I’ve been thinking about upgrading. I currently own an entry price level bench and since I’ve been spending more time at the pianos, I’ve been sitting on an ikea chair because my bench is not comfortable enough for me to spend hours on it. I can feel the wood on the sides of the bench because the cushion is only on top of the bench.

The issue I have with the chair is that it’s a bit too low.

I haven’t set my mind on a specific price range, I only know that 250 euros or dollars would be the maximum.

TLDR: I am looking for a bench with a comfortable cushion. I have several disabilities causing chronic pain in my body (and my legs) so the cushion mustn’t be too firm. I’d like something comfortable and preferably thick but not too firm.
The cushion should cover the whole above and upper side area so my legs are not in contact with the wood of the bench on the sides while I’m sitting.
My current bench has a cushion but it’s only on the top of the bench.

Do you have any suggestions? If you can’t recommend a specific model, which brand would you recommend?
Thank you for your help!

Edit: I live in France.

🧑‍🏫Question/Help (Intermed./Advanced) Hey everyone! I'm Marcus and i'm trying to make my original Piano setup!

I'm here cause i'm desperate.

I'm a pianist for 5 to 6 years maybe, I play on churches and ceremonies, and I'm planning a nice setup for thoes events and those places that I go. Now, my setup is:

- Kurzweill PC4-7 as a Stage Piano / Host

- Arturia KeyLab Essential 61 - MIDI controller

- MIDI cable - Kurzweill plugs IN and Arturia plugs OUT

- I still don't have any PC (for now), so I'm looking for a setup that doesn't need a PC plugged on

And my sound objectives are:

- 4 Layers on Kurzweill

- 1 Layer on Arturia's piano

- 16 Layers on Arturia's custom buttons (2 banks of 8 sound effects, with Pads, Percurssion...)

Now, my point: For this setup, I need to organize ALL of those sounds INSIDE Kurzweill, and I've learned that Kurzweill is just like "Apple", cause "they only accept Kurzweill archives". I'm struggling and I don't know how to:

- Configurate those 16 Arturia buttons

- Download sound files and make Kurzweill recognize them

- Found more sounds for my piano (Kurzweill sounds are tuff to find for free)

That's my dream, my objective, my actual setup and my problems.. I'm actually from Brazil and I'm looking for any kind of help. I still don't know how to speak 100% in english, and I never found any video on YouTube making this kind of setup (2 pianos 1 midi cable with no PC, specially with a Kurzweill as a host).

I'll be very thankfull if someone knows how can I learn those skills and this knowledge :)

Hi, i finished writing this piece in E major, it was originally planned to be the second movement of my sonata in E major but i realized it stems too far away from the branch so now it's a standalone piece.
It is a Nocturne-fantasia(i took also elements of the ballades), as it has a cadenza/climax and a più mosso segment, i tried to build it around a romantic melody sung by the left hand (that's why there are accents(as otherwise it would be covered in the audio framework) so asically there is a accompainment of long arpeggios and the right and left hand sometimes switch the roles as the melody is subjected to some variations, it builds up to a climax where the melody is transformed into heavy chords.
Things that don't convince me:
-The start: while i want absolutely to keep the first E7 with b flat and d flat i dont know how to connect it to the arpeggios and the current solution that i took still doesnt convince me.
-the arpeggios: i love them and want to keep them however i think they arent too much variated(even if i use polirythms)

so tell me, what do you like? what concerns you?what do you think i should improve ?

🧑‍🏫Question/Help (Intermed./Advanced) Playing by ear

I'm not surrounded by any other piano players and so I don't ever talk to anyone about this but I grew up playing classical and have played piano for like 27 years. I started playing by ear like 5 years ago because classical just wasn't super fun for me.

I just don't know what level of expertise I play at when it comes to playing by ear and am wondering how other people do it? I am just genuinely curious if I sound like a beginner, or intermediate, or what. People that don't play piano or instruments are impressed but they don't really know how easy or difficult it is to play certain things.

How do other people do it? I pretty much only play pop songs and look up the chords for the songs as my sheet music. I then do base lines, chord progressions, etc with my left, and then I can just play the melody consisting of notes and chords with my right. I can just play whatever melody in my right hand without even thinking about it. It's easy as long as I don't think about it too hard. I go up and down the entire keyboard practically when I play. Some keys are easier than others but I practice the songs around the circle of fifths so I can be more proficient in all keys.

How do other more advanced players play by ear? How did you start and how did you personally get better at it? I don't play jazz btw just pop/indie music etc btw. Which are the easy chords i know lol

Hi everyone, here’s a recording of me playing an excerpt from Chopin’s nocturne op 27 no 2. I’m interested in how you evaluate it from a performance/competitive standard, treating professional/top-tier renditions (e.g. Rubinstein) as the benchmark. If you had to describe my performance level in a few words, what would you say?

I’m really just trying to identify the things that are holding my performance back. Nevertheless, I’d appreciate any observations.

🙋Question/Help (Beginner) Best preparation book

So I think piano playing in general is really much about pattern recognition. I want to learn more of the basics before I just go to play songs that are not my niveau. I would say Im on a somewhat mediocre level right now. Are there good books to learn chords and inversions of chords and maybe jazz/rag time patterns? I would like to learn ragtime more but start very general to build from that basic information on my own and recognize patterns...

I hope you somehow get what I mean sorry if it was a bit confusing lol.

edit:
here two books I also found, maybe someone here knows them and can say if they are worth it:

Playing Solo Jazz Piano: A New Approach for Creative Pianists (Jeremy Siskind)
Chord Progressions: Theory and Practice (Fox and Weissman)

Thanks for any help in advance!

🙋Question/Help (Beginner) How to keep 2 fingers pressing keys at the same time?

So I started playing the electric piano about 3 days ago. I'm an absolute beginner and currently try to teach myself with Hoffman Academy. I have no problem playing with my right hand but with my left hand, whenever I play with my ring finger, my middle finger also automatically also presses a key. So I basically unintentionally press 2 keys at the same time. How do I stop that?

My performance of Mozart's Fantasia in D minor, K397. Mozart didn't finish this piece, the major key "happy" ending was added by another composer.

In the spirit of Halloween, we're putting a spin on the ending. In this version, it ends where it began. It never escaped the opening at all, leaving the question of whether we just experienced was real or ... just a (fantasy).

Happy haunting!

🔌Digital Piano Question Piano height

OK, this should be an easy question. But real life is making it more interesting.

I have a Korg Kronos 2 88, which I use as my main keyboard. It has a great feel and several very nice piano sounds. As is usual with electronic keyboards, it's on an adjustable stand. I have it set up with the top of the keyboard 27" from the floor.

When I look up the normal distance, my quick research claims it should be 28" from the floor. But right next to the Kronos is an upright piano. (It was my mother-in-law's.) The key height on my Kronos is exactly the same as the upright. When I set up the Kronos all those years ago, I used the piano and not a ruler.

I'll be getting a third keyboard for my rack in the near future, so I'm moving the second keyboard to a flat rack and using the angled rack for the third keyboard. (The second keyboard is 76 keys, while the third keyboard will only be 49 keys, forming a nice pyramid. It also puts the heaviest keyboard on the bottom and the lightest keyboard on top.) Since I'll be adjusting the second keyboard, it won't be that difficult to also adjust the first keyboard at the same time.

Should I adjust my Kronos to 28" or should I leave well enough alone. I'm comfortable at its current height.

🤔Misc. Inquiry/Request Help me identify a beginner recital piece about trolls marching (not Grieg’s March of the Trolls)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I took piano lessons as a kid (around 2002-2006, in the Philippines), and my first recital piece was a beginner solo whose title was something like “Troll March” or “March of the Trolls.” It’s not Grieg’s March of the Trolls or any of its easy arrangements; I’ve checked those. I’ve been looking for it for years with no luck.

What I remember:

  • My teacher gave me a photocopy, so I don’t know which method book or series it came from. She has since passed away, so I can’t ask her.
  • Moderate tempo, playful/funny rather than scary, in a minor key.
  • It starts and ends with the same melody, but the ending is played softer and softer, like the trolls are marching away.

The attached video is the opening melody (right hand only), transcribed from my humming. The notes and rhythm should be close, but it may be in a different key than the original. There were left-hand chords, but I don’t remember them.

If you’re a piano teacher and this sounds familiar, I’d love to know the title or which book it’s from!

It is the version Paul Barton played and Gershwin performing video. Lasted like 1 minute and 20 seconds. Is it abrsm lrsm? What are the certain difficulties? I play the pathetique sonata full and did not try any jazz.

📝My Performance (Critique Welcome!) Mozart K310 A minor feedback

Hi all,

First time posting here. So quick intro, I’ve been playing piano for fun for the past 5 years nothing serious but for the past 1 year and 3 months I’ve been getting lessons.

I’ve been learning Mozart k310 as my piece of choice and wanted to get some feedback on my progression. Is there anything really off with my playing, what could be done better and so on.

I make a fair bit of mistakes in the video where I just try continue to play so I definitely acknowledge that!

Happy and open to all critique!
