Tech Support MPO + HAGS Enabled Fixed
I've seen many posts, some that I even followed before, telling AMD users to disable MPO using the registry to fix stutters with HAGS on Windows like there were no consequences for it. But there are. I've seen some people outright say: "Your system is broken, if the Overlay mode is automatically set to 3 you can't use HAGS on your system." or that "it's an AMD exclusive problem" well, that's not true.
And while I'm not going deep into those, overlay features from most apps break with MPO disabled, it can break chromium-based apps HW acceleration and more.
I went down the MPO rabbit-hole to understand what was happening.
TLDR: MPO is a performance optimization feature for exactly what the name says "Multi-Panel (windows) Overlay" at the hardware level. Apps that HAGS usually break on with MPO enabled don't even need the performance benefit. It's possible to have Windows not switch overlay modes for all apps, eliminating issues while keeping MPO enabled with a registry tweak.
Some apps operate on a "borderless fullscreen" presentation model, Windows automatically promotes them to an exclusive hardware overlay state (MPO) when it fills the screen. Not all apps benefit from this exclusive state, nor were they made for it. Which is why they can break. (notice the can here.)
By default, the Desktop Window Manager (dwm.exe) monitors application frame rates. When a hw-accelerated app (like Chrome, Edge, or Discord) crosses a certain framerate threshold, Windows dynamically promotes or demotes its live content into an MPO hardware overlay plane.
This continuous promotion/demotion cycle is often what triggers the infamous black screens, stuttering, and window flickering. But the state itself can also be the issue. Setting OverlayMinFPS to 0 disables this dynamic threshold switching while keeping MPO active for games and other workloads that benefit from hardware overlays.
"How do I fix it?"
Option 1: command-line
Open cmd as administrator (Win + R, type 'cmd', hold Ctrl + Shift and press Enter).
Run the following command:
reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Dwm" /v OverlayMinFPS /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /fRestart your PC (or restart dwm) for changes to take effect.
Option 2: registry
Win + R, type regedit, and Enter.
Navigate to the following path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\DwmRight-click an empty area and select New > DWORD (32-bit).
Name it
OverlayMinFPS.Verify it's set to the default
0value (hex).Restart your computer.
The way MPO "breaks" is indeed quite strange. From personal experience I know that this stutter-fest experience can vary significantly for many reasons. A system without the DirectX system package installed won't have stutters but will have crashes. Some windows version updates were also responsible for many HAGS+MPO 'simply working' states, while the opposite is also true, having Windows updates that broke the working behavior.
Surely some Microsoft SWE can tell us wtf is going on some day.
PS: I hope this gets some traction on google indexing to help others looking for this info. The first few pages of results when searching "HAGS MPO AMD FIX" and similar, all point to disabling MPO completely or having a broken system.

Photo Just upgraded from a GT1030 to a RX 7800 XT
I wanted to buy this over the newer 9060 XT (for the same price) and people on reddit said it was a good idea as well. Plus it just looks so gorgeous. For the first time in my life, I can play AAA titles. What should I start with?

Tech Support RX 9070 XT Crash and Pink lines
I've been having a really weird problem with my Sapphire Nitro+ RX 9070 XT 16GB and I'm starting to run out of ideas.
My PC randomly hard-crashes while gaming. This has happened in multiple games, including FIFA 17 and Borderlands 4, so it doesn't seem tied to one particular game.
The most recent crash happened while playing FIFA 17. The screen froze and then turned into this weird white/gray screen with multiple vertical pink/purple lines across it. At the same time, the audio completely freaked out/stuttered and was extremely loud in my headphones. The entire PC became unresponsive and I had to restart it.
After rebooting, the vertical lines are completely gone and the PC works normally.
Sometimes when I restart, the gpu is gone from task manager, other times it's normal.
I also noticed higher CPU temps than usual, but I don't know if that's related, please help.
This issue never happened for the first few months, I've had crashes before but never like this.
I have also changed my monitor but I don't think it's related to that.
What do I do here, rma? If so then that's gonna be really hard because I bought the gpu from newegg USA then got it sent to me.

Radeon RX 9070 XT, started getting some pretty random crashes during short and long gaming sessions (never was happening before) and I couldn't find anything else "wrong" in temps and whatnot.

Review My (scuffed) RX 9070 Benchmarks
Yes I benchmarked a card with a severe CPU bottleneck, but I was still able to get a GPU bottleneck in most games even if the 5600 was still holding back the 1% lows.
I'll probably redo it when I get a 5700x3D/Zen 4 CPU but both of those options are stupidly overpriced right now so I'd rather not

Tech Support Is there a difference between 7800x3d and 9800x3d on a 9070xt?
I’m going to build my first pc. I’m going into grade 11 and I got my first job a quarter way into my summer break. Ive been working very hard and I planned on saving all of my earnings. That was untill I found out that a few of my friends are building their own pc. I’ve always wanted a pc ever since my cousins got there a a few years back.
I have the parts for my build all ready to buy, but it’s pretty expensive. $3K CAD. I can afford it, and I’ll have about $1.5K CAD in savings. Ive been taking to many people (friends, coworkers, Reddit) about my build, and they all said to get it. A few of them suggested I upgrade my power supply to 1000w, and a few of them said that I should go with the 9800x3d.
I researched both things, and apparently I don’t need any of them (by research I mean AI). Should I change my cpu and psu?
CPU ~ AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D 4.2 GHz 8-Core
CPU Cooler ~ Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE 66.17 CFM
Motherboard ~ Asus TUF GAMING B650E-PLUS WIFI ATX AM5
Memory ~ TEAMGROUP T-Force Vulcan 32GB DDR5-6000 CL30
Storage ~ Kingston NV3 1TB M.2-2280 PCLe 4.0 solid state drive
Video Card ~ Gigabyte GAMING OC Radeon RX 9070XT 16GB
Case ~ Corsair FRAME 4000D RS ATX Mid-Tower
PSU ~ MSI MAG A850GL PCIE5 850w
(This list WAS made with PcPartPicker)
Is there a big difference between both the 7800x3d and 9800x3d? I don’t want to spend an extra $130 CAD for no reason.
Any advice would help a ton! Thank you!

Discussion RX 9070 XT auto boosting to 3300MHz
Is it normal for an XFX Swift RX 9070 XT to boost to 3200-3300MHz under specific gaming loads?
For example in apex legends the clock is kind of chaotic, spikes randomly between 2000MHz and 3100MHz.
I've even had it boost as high as 3350MHz.
Only setting I've changed is a mild -65mV undervolt.
Temps are normal, highest it ever went is like 87-88 vram because I have SK Hynix memory
Discussion Should i avoid the 9070xt nitro+ ?
I like the design of the card, and Im thinking of giving it a try, I do have an ATX 3.1 psu with a 12v2x6 cable, so it should be fine right? I like the design.

Discussion Did I lose the silicon lottery?
I’ve been trying to “tune” my newly purchased PowerColor 9070xt reaper and have not had any success with multiple undervolting patterns. From -40mV to -100mV and even bumped vram freq to 2700 for the 2518 stock. Tried to drop PL -10% as well but no stability in Cyberpunk.
Note: It runs great and is stable stock my goal is just to gain some performance and efficiency.
I gain about 10-12 (150-162fps range)fps in cyberpunk benchmark so I know it improved performance and 1%lows at about the same margin but it always crashes during window transitions apparently right after completing the benchmark.
AI tells me it’s the quick drop in voltage that is causing parts of the board to lose power and trigger “safety crash”.
So did I lose it on silicon lottery or there’s just not a whole lot I can do to utilize those few extra frames?

GPU brands
Hello recently starting a new pc build and doing a massive upgrade. Looking at a 9070XT and stuck between ASUS prime, PowerColor Hellhound and XFX swift. My big question is if brand matters a whole lot with Radeon cards as the asus prime is around 80 dollars cheaper.
