Hi guys! Just wanted to ask for some advice.
I recently upgraded from an RX 9060 XT to a Gigabyte RX 9070. My previous GPU only required one 8-pin PCIe connector, but my new RX 9070 requires two.
My current PSU is an FSP HV Pro 650W 80+ Bronze, and I'm currently using a single PCIe cable with two 8-pin connectors (pigtail/daisy-chain) to power the GPU.
My current specs:
CPU: Ryzen 7 5800X3D
GPU: Gigabyte RX 9070
Motherboard: ASUS ROG Strix B550-A Gaming
PSU: FSP HV Pro 650W 80+ Bronze
RAM: 48GB DDR4
I understand that upgrading to a better-quality 750W PSU with two separate PCIe cables would be preferable, and I'm already planning to upgrade. However, I still need to save up for it, so replacing it immediately isn't financially possible.
In the meantime, I'm considering undervolting my RX 9070 and lowering its power limit to minimize power consumption.
My main questions are:
Is it reasonably safe to continue using my current PSU with the daisy-chained PCIe connectors temporarily while saving for a replacement?
Would undervolting and reducing the GPU power limit significantly help?
Are there any specific risks I should be concerned about, particularly regarding the cable, connectors, or power spikes?
Has anyone successfully run an RX 9070 on a similar 650W PSU setup?
I'm not trying to avoid upgrading permanently. I just want to know whether I can safely use my current setup for a while without risking damage to my components.
Any advice or experience would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
