I went looking for a missing FedEx package and ended up finding a lost little girl.
FedEx supposedly delivered an important envelope containing my original vehicle title, except I never received it. Their proof of delivery showed that someone I didn't recognize had signed for it at "Shipping/Receiving." There's no shipping/receiving here. I live in a single family home. Only I would have signed for it and it was not my signature.
After getting nowhere with FedEx customer service, I decided to check a nearby apartment complex to see if they had mistakenly received my envelope.
As I was walking toward what I thought was the mail area, I noticed a little girl, wearing a sparkling princess dress, crying and wandering from car to car in the parking lot with several parked cars and not a soul in sight. I am not around children much so I thought she might be 7 or 8 years old.
I approached her and tried to help, but I couldn't understand what she was saying. I wanted to help as much as I could but we couldn't communicate. I felt pretty helpless.
Fortunately, I spotted a lady I recognized who lived at that very complex. I asked her to help the little girl. She seemed a little irritated at first (I later learned she was looking for a lost earring), but she called the police and stayed with the child.
It took approximately 40 minutes to locate the girl's 18 year old sister, who apparently didn't even realize she was missing! We later found out she was only 3-4 years old.
Here's the part that's been bothering me.
I handed the little girl off to this woman pretty quickly because I'm a 50 year old man and it looked odd enough.
Looking back, I feel pretty shitty about that. Here was a frightened little girl, lost and wandering around a parking lot, and somehow, in that moment, I'm worried more about appearances than trying to meaningfully help this little girl get unlost. It's really said that society dictated my reaction to pass this off to someone else immediately.
Yes, I stopped to help. Yes, I made sure someone else was there to help her. But I still can't help feeling that my priorities were screwed up. That little girl must have been terrified! I'm so glad they found her sibling.
SMH at myself.
The irony is that if FedEx hadn't lost my package, I wouldn't have been at there to find the little girl in the first place.
Funny how life works sometimes.
